Agree on the roster balance …

Agree on the roster balance ... both in class and position!  Our guards are guards! And we have some!

Also, Brian isn't a take on Mahaney it sounds (from the roundtable). So, I guess I'm not a take on Mahaney because I only do what Brian says around here. Assuming Dusty is the same way?  I guess sign Johnell Davis instead?

Let's go with 3 lefties, and…

Let's go with 3 lefties, and one who likes to use his left because it feels like someone else is doing it.

All good thoughts. Great Monday!

keep in mind there was a…

keep in mind there was a pretty substantial contingent that wanted Coach B gone in Dec. every season.

This is a fact that a lot of selective memories tend to forget, particularly those people who like to wield pitchforks faster than others. (Although I'm not particularly sure about the 'December' part of this sentence, other than peculiar non-conference RPI scheduling decisions that were well chronicled in this digital space)

But their screams were consistent .. as in consistently changing. "Fire Beilein he can't recruit!" which slowly morphed to "Fire Beilein he won't recruit (five star players)" then it was "Fire Beilein he only runs his system" to "Fire Beilein we can't get over the hump" to "Fire Beilein we'll never compete with the bluebloods" obviously... like with the "Fire Harbaugh" crowd, their volume turned up and down with every appearance in the Final Four. But for some "fans", it definitely felt like if Beilein wasn't doing exactly what Coach K or Calipari was doing, then this program just wasn't achieving its rightful potential. Then he was gone. And I'm sure some of those same "fans" are the ones who now say he "bailed on the program."

I'm not normally one to run to the boards and type "no thanks" in a quickly dismissive manner, but really ... anyone on that 22 "Tunnel" team, I'm just going to be a pass. Maybe he wasn't an active participant, I don't know. I'm also not one for painting with big brushes, but in this particular situation, it just feels like a non-starter.

No thanks. DL "depth" can be found in many places.

I'm a little confused about…

I'm a little confused about what you're saying here. You're arguing that because Johnell Davis is likely not going to be on Michigan's team, you'd rather last year's roster to run it back? Other than a silly "Dusty" pun, I'm struggling to figure out the point here in this thread.

EDIT 2: I noticed above that embedded giphys are working? That's interesting. Not sure I'd want to spend the time to create a giphy every time I want to post an image. But looks like they work.  And now my semi-obscure reference from a 35 year old movie lives in tact.

EDIT: At which point I would have posted this amusing photo above, but am now forced to just link to an amusing photo.

Dear HUEL, please fix image embedding on MGoBlog. Signed, Meme Culture.

It doesn't appear to be an…

It doesn't appear to be an admissions issue, it appears to be more like a money issue. While Dusty is admirably trying to scratch build an NIL program, Davis (as potentially the most coveted guard in the portal) is going to fetch a number that's beyond what the team can invest in one player AND still try to fill a largely empty roster.

“Every single recruiting call, every Zoom, one of the three main factors always ends up being NIL,” he said in his latest interview... “It’s more of a crowdsourcing just to try to raise the level of awareness and the impact that every dollar counts, every opportunity counts,” May said.

Pretty sure both types of image hosting aren't working since the update. I made a reply about it in the Moderator Action thread earlier today.

Loving how the Media Button…

Loving how the Media Button allows for easy Tweet embeds.

Although it appears that image hosting, either directly through the "Folder" button. Or by doing a hardcode HTML on the source page. Are not working.

Is this a known bug?

Tested twice here above. Any attempt causes the board to autoedit the image code to just "img" with < > around it, from full code, with no subsequent unique code/text.

Here's a screencap about what the backend looks like...

EDIT: hmmm... simple image hosting/embedding isn't working on the board these days?

Why is that a weird comment?…

Why is that a weird comment? Derwin James by all accounts is a freak athlete and everyone knows it. He's an all-pro in the NFL and the highest paid safety in the entire league. Here's a link to a scouting article literally titled Derwin James is a physical freak.

Jim loves his guys. He's "one of the guys". This is exactly how I'd expect him to respond if someone asked him a question like "whats it like in the pros?"

I guarantee you not a single guy in that DB room that heard him say that even flinched.

It's a relatively new rule…

It's a relatively new rule. The NCAA expanded Men's and Women's coaching staffs to 5 from 3 (plus a Director of Basketball Operations and GAs/Analysts) before last season in July of 23.

Basically you have your three "bench" assistants who are your main assistants (Last year's Saddi, Eisley and Martelli), they're able to coach, recruit and travel, and you still can have a Director of Basketball Operations (Chris Hunter) plus GAs and Analysts. Only now you can also have two additional "basketball" coaches. They can be directly involved in skill instruction, game planning, scouting, and on-campus recruiting.

I don't think Juwan used his two additional coaching positions last year. I could be wrong on this.

Additional info from…

Additional info from Henschke

So, for those scoring at home (or even if you're by yourself), Michigan has five open "assistant" positions. Only three, however, are allowed to go on the road and recruit.

Boynton, Miskedeen and now Joyner appear to be those three. WIth FAU assistant Kyle Church and (maybe/probably not now) Rod Clark or KT Harrell coming along as well. Harrell potentially not as an assistant but basketball operations.

Good point. Also, confirming thoughts from a St. Mary's connected media member:

Yeah... hmm, OP tweet embeds…

Yeah... hmm, OP tweet embeds still not working. Lets see if I can embed it here.

EDIT: Interesting... so the new "Media" button is an easier and better way to post/embed tweets. Nice little upgrade. Not sure how long that's been on the board, I'm just noticing it now.

Great!  Now that this life…

Great!  Now that this life and death dilemma for your friend (starting to see holes in this story of yours) has been solved.... how about a legit question of legitimacy for you to legitimately answer?

Do you find yourself going into situations expecting a negative outcome and getting exactly what you expect? Have you considered that your approach may be what elicited the responses you got?

Just some food for thought on your eclipse day, MGoBlog is generally one of more socially responsible fan communities that I've seen online. If you don't believe me, try heading over to one of the "pay boards" and see the absolute shit shows that go on there. Were you likely going to get some kind of (varying degree of) humorously snarky response? Yes. But also, you were likely going to have someone like Joe eventually wander in and give a decent answer.

The only thing that seems to oddly boil over, along the way, is your blood pressure, and it's likely because you came into this whole exchange, via your OP, with both gloves up.

I think Musselman knew…

I think Musselman knew something was going on behind the scenes, or at least knew something like this was possible.

I actually don't think this part is true. It appears that Cal may have been their third choice based on the reporting.

Per ESPN:

After his departure, Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek pursued Ole Miss' Chris Beard and Kansas State's Jerome Tang, although both coaches returned to their respective schools. Arkansas is believed to have offered Beard in the neighborhood of $5 million per year, sources said.

Arkansas Democrat Gazette

Beard has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Arkansas job and is staying at Ole Miss, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported.

“Great times ahead in Oxford,” Beard, who led the Rebels to a 20-12 record in his first season at Ole Miss, posted on social media. “We are just getting started.”

Kansas State Coach Jerome Tang has emerged as a leading candidate for the Arkansas job, Rothstein reported citing sources.

Miss State Chris Jans and A-LR Darrel Walker appear to be the backups to a Cal plan, based on when they interviewed/scheduled to interview

The other part about the Cal situation at Kentucky has been boiling up for a while now. You're definitely right about that. LAST season's first round exit had been too much and enough for most UK fans, but it had become untenable for Cats fans for a while now.

It makes sense to me.  It's…

It makes sense to me.  It's not completely unlike Bill Curry in 1989: a fairly successful Alabama Head football Coach leaving to go to Kentucky (?!?!).  Alabama won the SEC in 1989 and finished in the Top 10, but they were sick of each other, so off he went to a substantially less blue-blood SEC football school (then Alabama hired Gene Stallings and won a National Title 3 years later).

Sure, Bill Curry was 'Wally Pip' to the legend Stallings. But he'll forever be remembered disaffectionately by most as one of ESPN's worst-ever color analysts with his slow, half-witted anecdotes, unfunny colloquialisms, and distinct ability to point out obvious.  :)

He just got to Syracuse and…

He just got to Syracuse and seems to be having a good time in their Spring Practices. It'd be funny, but there's about 0.0% chance of it happening.

OP, I think ultimately the "known" options aren't out there yet. When the window re-opens after Spring Practice, guys will have a better idea of where they stand with their teams, and likely will that's when some will start to have a wandering eye for a better opportunity.

That's the thing right? It's…

That's the thing right? It's weird to sit here and be a bit conflicted about the idea that Juwan wasn't getting the support he needed, but feel somewhat positive that Dusty May may get the support that Juwan didn't?

Also with Warde too... I'm in the "It's probably time for Warde to go" camp. But if it took all of the alarm bells to ring for him to activate, at least theres activity now?  I guess it doesn't bode well for potential future issues. You want a leader who is proactive not reactive. But there is merit in people who are able to change (if that's truly what's happening here).

None of this is cut and dry. Conflicting.

You're right ... I guess I'm…

You're right, their national guys were some of the worst ... I guess I'm more zen about the Stallions/Sign Stealing thing now as time and cooler heads seem to have won out. No one cares about it unless you're a Buck or Sparty dying on a hill. No one in their right mind thinks an asterisk applies, or really expects there to be something notable down the road.

I guess I look at it all like a time where literally EVERY member of the media went out, got SUUUPER hammered, made a bunch of hasty, bad decisions, said some things they didn't mean, some of them started crying, others were trying to hookup... it was bad.  Then, everyone sobered up. Had some time to reflect. Watched Michigan whip that Ohio ass, then Alabama, then Washington. We all had a big hug and the good guys were vindicated in the end.  :)

Also... if I blocked all the "sinners", I'd basically be limited to only listening to Sam and MGoAudio content for all of my sports coverage lol.

Completely agree. Fab Five…

Completely agree. Fab Five forever.

Also, I probably should have added this quote too... It's a good ending and Juwan appears to have a good attitude moving forward.

“Listen, I’ll forever be a fan of Kim and her program, so I’m going to go and support them,” Howard says. “I’m not going to hide under a freakin’ rock. No way.”

Howard says he’ll likely be at a men’s game next season to support his former players. His son Jace could still be on the team. He’ll be at graduation in the spring.

As far as work goes, Howard has no immediate plans.

“I’m going to focus on my health,” he says. “I’m still in (rehabilitative) therapy. That’s my main priority. I’m not where I want to be health-wise, but I’m getting there.”

He will, in time, return to coaching, most likely in the NBA.

“This is not the end, and it will not be the end-all, be-all of my coaching career,” he says.

Howard says he has “a ton of respect” for May, the coach now occupying his old office, and wishes him well.

“I’m never going to be bitter about the situation and how it ended,” Howard says. “I respect that people have jobs to do. Sometimes in this profession, you have to make tough decisions. I’m not saying this was a tough decision, it was probably an easy decision. Who knows? But I’m a Michigan man through and through. … I’m just sad I’m leaving a lot sooner than I expected to.”

And by the Georgia fans…

And beloved by the Georgia fans who are sad to see him go. Similarly, the Boynton hire was applauded by Ok State fans as "their loss/good hire."

Two really good grabs for Dusty on his bench. Feels good to have positive vibes coming out of the basketball room again.

Subsequently, his OL groups…

Subsequently, his OL groups at USC and UCLA were downright awful. I think he’d be an amazing choice for Ohios new OL coach!

"Big-time recruiter"?

"Big-time recruiter"?

I don't remember this factoid.

EDIT:

Here's his 247 profile

https://247sports.com/Coach/tim-drevno-2202/AllTimeRecruits/

His most notable recruits were all Michigan guys (Ben Bredesen, Cesar Ruiz, Mike Onwenu), he's basically just brought in 3 stars since leaving...  I'm not sure "big-time recruiter" is the phrase I'd use. But as a QC analyst at Ohio, I'm not sure that's how they're planning on using him anyways.

Are you sure that's Peja's…

Are you sure that's Peja's son? I just assumed Stojakovic is just a super common last name in Croatia. ;)

Also ... if Andrej does end up choosing Michigan, expect a "Wagner's Mom" type situation for the former greek super model if she attends games.

I'm here to help. If my helps not appreciated... lots of luck, gentlemen.

Trade down, fill holes, get…

Trade down, fill holes, get younger, get deeper.

There's a lot of storylines here getting coverage, but one reason why I don't think Jim takes a WR is because of LAC's 23 first round pick Quentin Johnson. Yes, he underperformed last year, but basically everyone underperformed last year, and WR is one of the tougher positions to immediately impact as a rookie. Further, Jim got a whole month's worth of scouting on Johnson and his senior year at TCU (including seeing his playoff performance in person). If anyone sees/knows the potential of Johnson as a WR it's Harbaugh.

Also, this is widely considered to be the deepest OT draft in NFL history. 14-16 potential OTs taken in the first 3 rounds. Probably doesn't make a lot of sense to take a tackle early if there's historic depth at the position.

As an aside, I keep seeing AJ Barner as a 7th round prediction. I could definitely see the best blocking TE in the draft being a great fit and value pick for Jim in the later rounds.

I don't know this to be…

I don't know this to be exactly true, but I do know how YouTube works. There's a good chance that if he uses in-game footage his video will be demonetized by YouTube because he is not the copyright holder and does not have permission to rebroadcast the game. I know he's used footage in the past, but the demonetization fairy can come at any time, and that potentially that played a role in it.

But also, yeah, he's got "a couple other things" going on ... like say, trying to earn that dream job of his in the NFL. May also be a good reason why this one came out months "late" versus his usual week or two later.

I guess I'm a little…

I guess I'm a little confused what it is you think you're getting when you're "excited" going into them. They are exactly what I expect them to be; a player "vlog" showing a behind the scenes look at the day-to-day life of a player on the team. You see a little lockerroom stuff with friends, maybe a little bit on the team bus. On one of his first vlogs he showed going to class, going to practice, his dog. Not groundbreaking. But fairly interesting stuff for a fan of the team I'd say.

That said, we're not going to get to see "real" practice footage, or intimate coach and team moments. It's not a BTS documentary.

You mean the Kenny Pickett…

You mean the Kenny Pickett who was traded to the Eagles on Friday?

I think his job as backup to Jalen Hurts is still firm.  ;)

Bench:

Guard: Nik Stauskus

Bench:

Guard: Nik Stauskus

Guard: Rumneal Robinson

Guard: Tim Hardaway Jr.

Forward: Glen Robinson Jr.

Forward: Franz Wagner

Center: Juwan Howard

Center: Maurice Taylor

I see on your list we get to cherry pick notable Purdue University hooper Glenn 'Big Dog' Robinson Jr from other teams.   :)

If you're going to use Nick…

If you're going to use Nick Saban (football) as an example then you make it super easy to point to guys like Bill Snyder and Bill Walsh who both returned back to a college they left in their 60s to finish out their career.

Pretty sure Twitter removed the functionality that allows external video embed (but not 100% positive). If someone has posted it on Youtube, you can still embed video from YT here on the board.

I guess, but also,…

I guess, but also, underperforming astronomically high expectations is not the definition of "bust".  Underperforming reasonable expectations for the context, also is not a "bust".

Tony Mandarich = bust.

He had 16 TDs in 16 games in…

He had 16 TDs in 16 games in 2007.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but SBC is also why we now have to call it the "Red River Rivalry" instead of the "Red River Shootout" no?  20 years ago they bought and sponsored the "Shootout" name and then disallowed any unapproved use.

Collinsworth and Garrett…

Collinsworth and Garrett were the lead ND crew. Eagle and Blackledge were the lead B1G crew.

Yeah but he's not. I mean…

Yeah but he's not. I mean don't force me into a situation where I have to "defend" Jac Collinsworth... but he studied broadcasting at Notre Dame, he had a notable broadcasting job on campus while a student at Notre Dame. He may have gotten his first job with NBC because of a connection with his dad, but also because NBC is the flagship broadcast network of Notre Dame. Broadcasting Notre Dame games wasn't his first job. He was a digital producer, and social media "kid" right out of college. He did social/digital correspondence for the Rio Olympics in 2016. He then left NBC and spent 3 years at ESPN as a features reporter. Before returning to NBC and eventually taking his position.

Yes, he progressed too quickly. He's also relieved of his position because of that. It's also not his fault NBC put him in that job. It's his job to go out and get whatever he can get.

But if you look at Twitter or ask online, he graduated Notre Dame, showed up at NBC and they made him the lead broadcaster of Notre Dame. He wasn't ONLY hired because of his father. It's not the literal truth. He had qualifications, while still being underprepared/underqualified.

No, by most accounts, NBC is…

No, by most accounts, NBC is pretty huge on Noah Eagle.

For the 1-2? Michigan games that Eagle called this year I didn't love it. But not necessarily because of Eagle. Mostly, the NBC production kind of felt like because they had never broadcast these Big Ten games, perhaps the Big Ten audience had never seen Big Ten games?  It was a little weird having the Brown Jug (a 100 year old college trophy) almost "introduced" like people had never heard of it.

Noah Eagle isn't one of my favorites. But great college football broadcasters (in my humble opinion) are kind of hard to come by. All of the really good football talent is quickly shuffled up to the NFL. Jac was a lot harder on my ears, but thankfully/gratefully ND was pretty average and I didn't have a lot of reason to tune into Jac and Garrett. Again though, I think the hand-wringing online about him and "nepotism" is a bit overblown.

Yeah, It’s really happening!…

Embedded for your viewing pleasure.

Also, I used to play this game. Go Blue!

Kind of making a few…

Kind of making a few assumptions here... Grubb very well could have accepted the Seattle job last week and let DeBoer know. And DeBoer could have been using this time to look for someone new. Very similar to how Bill O'Brien left his job as the OC of Ohio, and then within two days the HC of UCLA leaves his job and accepts the position. One could probably assume Ryan Day was getting a jump on finding a new OC, even while BOB was likely deciding to leave.

As for why on the timing? A LOT was made about the amount of players who "jumped ship" when Saban left. My guess is that Grubb was trying to do his buddy DeBoer a solid and not incentivize even MORE transfers before KD has a chance to settle the program.

I agree that it feels pretty deceptive. And the timing doesn't really feel like a circumstance, especially given that quote from the article.

I have nothing to add, but…

I have nothing to add, but just wanted to thank you for the post and extend my thoughts and support.
