You make a valid point with…

You make a valid point with DEI.  CRT is an academic viewpoint/concept. It is not taught at levels beneath the University level and has it no real effect on much of anything so far as I can tell.  When people bitch about how much "damage" CRT is doing or how "dangerous" it is for our youth they clearly using coded language.

So the sentiment was…

So the sentiment was primarily from home and not from within the student body while you were in A2?  Yes, now it makes sense.

Genocide was worse than…

Genocide was worse than slavery which was worse than Jim Crow which was worse than bigoted  jokes in high school circa 1985 which was worse than controversy while finding non-harmful ways to address non binary people.  There's no perfect union.  The point is to make it more perfect.  That appears to be happening (see above).

I attended M in the late-80s…

I attended M in the late-80s.  I heard no such complaints.  The term "JAP" was pretty commonplace.  Black kids were often assumed to be athletes.  There was great controversy over whether to wear jeans on a certain day in support of gay people.  So yeah, imperfect, but pretty mild compared to what Johnny Orr clearly thought!

I don't remember any complaints that there were too many women!

Maybe.... probably.... I…

Maybe.... probably.... I haven't thought much about it.... But 250 years ago we were engaged in genocide.... and 150 ago we bought and sold people.... and 70 years ago Jim Crow kept the people who used to be property legally unequal and lynchings continued... and 40 years ago there was rampant sexism/racism/homophobia/antisemitism in the Detroit 'burbs.... and 20 years ago certain people are still losing their minds over gay Ellen having a talk show..... and today there are battles over pronouns for trans people... not whether they have rights as citizens or deserve equal protection or whether it is okay to use slurs to describe them.... but what the most appropriate pronouns are.

It appears we are limping toward a more perfect Union. Often grudgingly.  Hopefully asymptotically.

My opinions on Title 9 haven…

My opinions on Title 9 haven't changed much since I was a kid and the issue was still controversial.  I always thought they should exempt the profit making sports from the men's teams' scholly numbers (because they are paying the freight and were virtually professional in every way except player pay).  Then have equal scholly numbers/equipment etc for non-revenue sports.  That said, It's good to be reminded of the naked sexism from those days.... Orr's comments seem downright silly today.

I tell my kids (19 and 25) about the casual racism/antisemitism/homophobia that were absolutely commonplace during my something-north-of-middle-class WASPy youth and they can't believe their ears.  Maybe on occasion "political correctness" leads to some hairbrained conclusions, but my god we're a better society than we were a generation or two ago.

A high school buddy of mine…

A high school buddy of mine and i used to play handball at the (former) Maple Athletic Club in Troy (early 80s). Court time was expensive so when we could somehow get on for free we did.  During a tournament when the lights for all the courts were on we jumped on one between matches.  We were just fooling around and then looked behind us and saw Bill Freehan (McLain's battery-mate) was watching.  "Fooling around" instantaneously became a fucking war.  I wound up diving for a ball and smacking the back of my head on the wall.  Blurred vision and the most painful nausea I've ever experienced followed during the course of the night.  I saw Freehan in the locker room a couple weeks later.  He asked if I was okay and made a joke about being a catcher who had taken lots of blows to the head.  Really a great guy.  Polar opposite of McLain.  Rest in Peace Mr. Freehan.

smart guy... very smart. …

smart guy... very smart.  Great pitcher.... so great that he and Bob Gibson forced MLB to lower the mound..... a true piece of shit human being.  Fuck him.

How do I feel about our offseason? Beside myself with joy!  My boy received his acceptance to M yesterday!

I’ll stick with it as long…

I’ll stick with it as long as it feels real.  If it’s basically “everyone’s a free agent every year” and a kid’s association with a given school for a given year is 100% transactional, I’ll probably opt to start watching the (much) better quality ball played on Sundays.

IMO the ball never really…

IMO the ball never really stopped moving.  It's as close as close can be, and nowhere near enough to overturn, but I don't know that it wasn't picked.  It's okay.  I also think JT was short and Hutch had a strip sack TD, the clock hit 0 in E. Lansing and Charles Frickin' White lost the ball two yards outside the endzone.

The better team won Saturday. We'd beat them 8 out of 10.  But we may have gotten a close one to go our way.

I know Stapleton.  I wouldn’t say we’re friends, but we’re friendly.  Having chatted with him in some depth about M football, JUB, and Harbaugh specifically (no contact for a month or so), I would say that much of the vitriol directed against him here is very likely unfounded.  Well all find out in the next couple months.  Peace.

Totally agree. I dropped Twitter for Threads several months ago.  Threads was far less engaging due to a lack of what I was getting on Twitter.  I haven't visited either in weeks.  I am better for it and no less informed.  Cheers and Go Blue!!!!

Agreed, but the marching band can't be expected to fill that amount of time and remain entertaining.  I understand the need for something to complement them during timeouts, I just hate the DJ.  I'd love to see/hear Michigan Stadium burst into song once a quarter.  Maybe the band plays Jesse's Girl while the crowd sings!!??

I suspect both will be…

I suspect both will be pursuing life outside Ann Arbor in the near future.  Fuck them.

I am of the STRONG opinion…

I am of the STRONG opinion that we need more acapella in the stadium.  So many commercial breaks.  So much idiotic music being pumped in.  The student section should serenade us with quarterly songs of heartbreak.  To Mr. Brightside I would add Is She Really Going Out with Him?, Jesse's Girl, and My Best Friend's Girl.

MGoBlog leadership should make this a priority!

Many years ago Mike, my…

Many years ago Mike, my former bro in law (now just my brother), and I were interested in waterfowl hunting.  He is a Michigan Tech grad and knew some of his old fraternity bros would be up there in the fall goose and duck hunting.  That summer I took the required hunter's safety course, bought a shotgun and some camo, went skeet shooting, etc.  The season came and we headed toward Houghton.  We hung out with Mike's friends and the time eventually came for the afternoon goose hunt.  They had obtained permission to hunt a dairy farm for the two hours during which the cows were inside being milked.  The cows came off the field and we ran out on to it, Mike and I dutifully following instructions on setting decoys and eventually getting beneath camo tarps.  Sure enough we saw some birds in the distance and Mike's pals called them in.  "Take 'em!" and the bedlam started.  Four birds down (none as a result of me).  The afternoon went like that until we had to pick up for the returning cows.  These guys were straight up pros!

That night there was a party at a cabin owned by the Tech forestry dept that someone had rented.  Everyone brought something genuinely good to eat, almost all of which was new to me.  Goose peppersteak, grilled grouse, stuffed mallard, brunswick stew with rabbit and squirrel.  Probably 40 guests, 10 dogs, several kegs, and lots of brandy.  The party went deep into the night and it remains one of the best times I've ever had.

Dawn the next day came very, very early.  But we got up, donned camo, loaded the truck and drove down the street to the boat docked on the Portage River (probably about a 1/2 mile wide at this point).  We loaded the boat.  Six guys (I was probably 180 lbs at that point and significantly lighter than anyone else), 3 sacks of decoys, 6 shotguns, a couple thermos's of coffee, and a very happy dog.  Mike and I were in the bow on a bench seat facing the stern.  We were underway in the dark and I was pumped (and a little hungover)! These guys were PROS!

30 seconds later my ass was a little cold.  SHIT! We were taking on water! SHIT! We're going down!  It's freaking October in the northernmost point in the UP and we're swimming.  I'm gonna die!  Suddenly I hear someone say "everyone all right?"  Everyone was and someone had the presence of mind to distribute the five flotation cushions.  The sixth guy used a bag of decoys for flotation.  It was cold, but it was manageable.  We were probably a 200 yards from the dock and we started working our way back.  Everyone but the guy with the decoy bag.  There was just too much resistance for him to make any headway.  Fully dressed in jackets etc the going was hard and we kept hoping some other hunters would show up and drag us back.  I hung back with decoy bag, but I was getting cold.  I told him I was headed to shore, but if  no one showed up I would go back out and get him.  Sure enough, no one showed up.  I stripped to my longjohns and went back out.  Why me? Frankly I was in decent physical shape and no one else there was.  I went and dragged him back 150 yards or so and finally another hunter showed up and we got a boat ride for the final 50.

We went to the bro in law's old frat house where several showers were available.  I warmed up as best I could then crawled into a sleeping bag and shivered hard for at least an hour before falling asleep.

Everything was lost besides the boat, the dog (who remained happy throughout), and our lives.  The takeaway? Always think for yourself.  I've fished all my life and here is no way I would have loaded that boat like that.with that. But i got onboard without a second thought because those guys were pros.  They still are.  And I'm not bad either at this point, but everybody makes mistakes.

Cheers

let her make damn near any…

let her make damn near any decision she really cares about.  What restaurant, paint color, what color of impatiens. Doesn't matter.  Just maintain some sort of veto power over things that just don't make sense.  You'll know about some subjects that she doesn't and in those realms you'll need to take the lead.  Otherwise just be obedient.  Life will be easier.  As for a relatively inexpensive, domestic honeymoon??? NEW ORLEANS!

The Vu in Ypsi appears…

The Vu in Ypsi appears permanently closed... makes one consider the possibilities....

( I kid of course).  As a happy Ypsi resident, I'm thrilled the thing is shuttered.  I have no problem with gals making their livings.  It just didn't need to be the anchor of the downtown.)

I scrolled a long way to…

I scrolled a long way to make sure this was mentioned.  Back in the day there was a long line at the women's bathroom for the first game or maybe two.  Then no lines at all except maybe just before the kick and the beginning of the half.  There was virtually never a line at the men's room or, if there was, it moved at a slow walking pace.

Second thing..... I'm not a big soccer fan, but the Euros belting out their tunes a capella is epic.  Mr. Brightside should be one of 5 or 10 or 20 songs our stadium owns that can be deployed during any convenient 6 minute timeout.

Well done XM.  As always.

One  the more famous gun dog…

One  the more famous gun dog writers, might have been Bill Tarrant, posed the question (I paraphrase), "why is God so cruel as to give dogs so short a life that we must watch them die?"  His answer: "so we can meet more of them".

Beautiful piece.  Sounds like Maude had a great life XM, but still sorry for your loss.  And yes, dogs, especially labs, are the absolute best. Eddy (ours) spent his weekend insisting on fetching dummies from the very chilly Au Sable then later wrapping himself in provided bedding.

I'd only add/adjust one…

I'd only add/adjust one thing..... yeah, the bully got punched in the mouth and crumpled. He got hit by the kid who used to supply the lunch money an it doesn't look like the kid is gonna soften up again anytime soon.
