If we land Goldin, I don’t…

If we land Goldin, I don’t think we’ll miss him that much.

But good for him.

I think Meyer was forced out…

I think Meyer was forced out over the Zach Smith thing.  As a courtesy (and to avoid the fanbase burning the school down), they called it a resignation.

I actually don’t think the…

I actually don’t think the 2017-20 period would have been that different.  The narrative certainly would have been different, and Harbaugh’s honeymoon with the fanbase would have lasted longer, but our weak 2014 and ‘15 recruiting classes were going to catch up to us.  The 2017 team just didn’t have many talented upperclassmen.  Also, Don Brown was going to be found out.  I think we’d have probably still lost the next few OSU games and found ourselves struggling to break through, similar to PSU post-2016.

PSU might actually be the program that most affected by us winning the Game in 2016.  That would take away Franklin’s one Big Ten title, which might have left him on shakier footing and possibly hurt his recruiting.

the only reason Harbaugh…

the only reason Harbaugh left was the NFL period

Unless you are actually Jim Harbaugh himself, I don’t know how you can state this for a fact.

The NFL was certainly a reason, and quite probably the biggest one, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have others.

I feel that this is still…

I feel that this is still missing the larger point, which is that sign-stealing isn’t against the rules.

The alleged infraction relates to in-person scouting, which exists as a rule for financial reasons and not due to any perceived competitive advantage.

An innocent person might…

An innocent person might flee the cops in the heat of the moment, but is unlikely to engage in this kind of premeditated act (gathering up a passport, disguise and thousands of dollars days after the murder occurred).  Particularly an innocent person whose wife was just killed.

There wasn’t really anything…

There wasn’t really anything bad about Jordan’s time with the Wizards.  He was still a good player, just no longer at a  GOAT level. But he was also several years younger than Brady is now.

The 5-year clock actually…

The 5-year clock actually starts once you take your first class.

Also: that he tried to flee…

Also: that he tried to flee the country (he had his passport and a disguise in the Bronco), which an innocent person almost certainly wouldn’t do.  For some reason the prosecution never brought it up during the trial.

Wisconsin could well have…

Wisconsin could well have beaten Duke in 2015.

It was a 3-point game when…

It was a 3-point game when Burke got hit with the phantom foul on the block.  We absolutely could have won.

And in 1976, two Big Ten…

And in 1976, two Big Ten teams played for the title.

The Big Ten also went 0-for…

The Big Ten also went 0-fer in the 1990s, too, despite having at least six teams in the FF that I can remember:

-1992 Michigan

-‘92 Indiana

-‘93 Michigan

-‘97 Minnesota

-‘99 MSU

-‘99 OSU

The one time the conference got over the hump in the last 30+ years, 2000 MSU got to play an 8 seed and 5 seed in the Final Four.   Can’t get that kind of draw too often.

You seem to be suggesting…

You seem to be suggesting that we had some kind of ceiling under Beilein.  The man took us to the national title game twice.

Calipari took UMass and…

Calipari took UMass and Memphis to the Final Four before UK.  He's been an excellent (if a bit shady) coach throughout his career.

Queue the 8 min final drive…

Queue the 8 min final drive when we wanted to end the game.

Cue.  You're not putting it in the back of your playlist, you (the director) are giving the cue for it to be performed.

Meh, I think they've had…

Meh, I think they've had worse.  "He has deceptive speed.  He's slower than he looks" always made me chuckle.

Although the capital of…

Although the capital of Alsace is spelled Strasbourg in French and Straßburg in German, his own family name is Strasburg.

- Purdue fans are annoying…

- Purdue fans are annoying and I'm bitter about the Crisler takeover

I don't understand this.  Our own fans didn't want to go to the game and they did.  That's fair.

Eh. We got caught cheating,

Eh. We got caught cheating,

We've been accused of cheating.  Bit of a difference.

Well, they made the Final…

Well, they made the Final Four in 1992 and national championship game in 2002.

I have no desire to pile on…

I have no desire to pile on Howard (and respect how he has handled this) but to say that “admissions screwed him” overlooks that he made the choice to gamble, two years in a row, on transfer candidates that were uncertain to graduate.  Moreover, he did so without any clear backup options in case they were denied.  Those were choices he made.

If he was promised that Shannon/Love would be admitted, even if they didn’t graduate, then yes, I’d say he was screwed.  But that seems very unlikely.

His roster management in general was not great (why recruit so few guards?).  We brought in too many one-and-done players, which forced us to have to reload each offseason.  Last summer we brought in three transfers and that still wasn’t sufficient for our roster needs.  That really shouldn’t be the case for a program in a coach’s fifth year.

He may be better off in the pros where he can focus on coaching and let his GM handle player acquisition.

not sure I've ever heard a…

not sure I've ever heard a name with "Gold" that isn't Jewish

Ian Gold?

He's a sophomore at Yale, so I think he should be OK.  It's more the upperclass courses that are tough to transfer over.

A Michigan analyst dressed…

A Michigan analyst dressed up as a CMU assistant coach and snuck onto the MSU football field in order to learn MSU's signs.

Important distinction there.

(I also don’t think he snuck on the field, nor was he there to learn the signs.  He was invited by CMU to share his sign knowledge to their staff.)

Good to have at last a…

Good to have at last a strong non-revenue sport to attach to this offseason for enjoyment

Hockey makes a profit, I believe.

Cade went 12-2 with a win…

Cade went 12-2 with a win over OSU and Big Ten championship. If he is able to finish out the game vs MSU they win it.

He did finish the game.  He quarterbacked our last two possessions, but we failed to score, turning it over on downs and throwing an interception.

I'm fairly certain Harbaugh…

I'm fairly certain Harbaugh guaranteed victory over OSU in 1986 with an eye towards the 2024 NFL Draft.

People hate good coaches. To…

People hate good coaches. To overcome that takes something special.

I don't know.  No one hated Beilein or Jay Wright.  Roy Williams seemed to be generally well-liked.

There seem to be a lot of jerks in the college basketball ranks, but disliking a coach isn't just out of jealousy, imo.

Anyway, that aside, we…

Anyway, that aside, we better be top 100 next year and I'd say making the tournament is 50/50.

Whoa there - we barely have anyone on the team right now.  We're going to need several impact transfers to give us a competitive roster, and then we're going to have to hope they can mesh and become a team in a matter of months.  Some patience is probably in order.

I think that's the view of…

I think that's the view of most Michigan basketball fans.  The OSU series matters mostly if both teams are good.  And it had some extra juice when Trey Burke was here, since he was from Columbus.  But most years, it's not that big of a deal.  We beat them this year in Crisler, but it certainly didn't salvage the season.

I'm not sure why the OP is prioritizing that game above everything else.  MSU, I could perhaps see.

He wasn't looking to leave a…

He wasn't looking to leave a year ago.  A guy who takes Florida Atlantic to the Final Four is going to have opportunities.  The timing worked out for us.

I don't know why people use…

I don't know why people use this as a defense of Rose.  If I'm betting on my team to win on Saturday, that may affect how I manage on Thursday and Friday.  I may rest key players those days to keep them fresh for Saturday, to increase my chances of cashing in.  Gambling on your own team in any event can affect the integrity of the game.

Last time football won the…

Last time football won the national championship, the hockey team ... just saying.

Bill Martin's most…

Bill Martin's most significant impact (besides the Beilein hire) was in facilities.  In practically every sport ours were outdated when he came in.  He got a ton done there in his decade at the helm.

They basically did to us…

They basically did to us what we did to them in 2021.

That's going a little far.  They scored 14 points.  But against our banged-up offense, it was enough.

If you need to think this…

If you need to think this hard about a $25 donation, then don't bother.  But IMO, it's not that much to contribute and may - nothing is ever guaranteed - help the team a bit.

The weather sucks in most…

The weather sucks in most places for 4 to 5 months not named California or Florida quite frankly.

Florida in the summer is absolutely gross.

California, yeah, I'd agree - at least on the coast.  Inland, it's blazing hot in the summer.

There is another aspect to…

There is another aspect to it, which is that Howard just didn't seem that engaged in PR in general, whether it was giving the media access or doing fundraising events.

I'm sure some of that stuff is annoying and I could see why a fabulously wealthy ex-NBA star might not want to do it ... but it's part of being a college head coach.

European basketball…

European basketball geographical inaccuracy is something up with which we should not put!

For starting center…

For starting center Vladislav Goldin, he looked at how Fenerbahce utilized Jan Veselý in the pinch post. A lot of the ball-screen action Goldin is involved in is stolen right from the ACB.

Fenerbahçe is actually in Turkey, not Spain.  (By chance, I happen to know someone who's a fan of them.)  They may have played against some Spanish teams in the Euroleague (which is the basketball equivalent of the Champions' League), but they don't play in the ACB.

Do you think he isn't a…

Do you think he isn't a legend here as it is?

Sounds like Ramsey certainly…

Sounds like Ramsey certainly was key here, helping to not only alert Manuel to May as a candidate, but also by speaking to May regularly during this process.

I was curious what Ramsey is doing now - his Wikipedia page doesn't say anything beyond his EMU tenure (which ended in 2011).  Apparently he's now at the HS level, coaching Ypsilanti, or at least was as of 2020.  I wonder if we offer him a role in some capacity.

I've been a fan of his since…

I've been a fan of his since he was a player here, and wish him the best going forward, but I don't really get the uproar over the headline.  "Fab Failure"?  A bit harsh but coming off an 8-24 season, I can't really say it's wrong.

I'll defend the Daily most of the time.  It's a student newspaper.  If people want to go after professional journalists, ok, but cut the students some slack.

Crean is probably the worst…

Crean is probably the worst name on that list and he has two Big Ten titles at perennial also-ran Indiana.

Savage!

That's assuming that all…

That's assuming that all those players are loyal to Howard and would follow him elsewhere.  That's far from certain.  There were rumors of massive transfers all season long, even when Howard's status for next year was unknown.

"This should be a diary" is…

"This should be a diary" is usually meant a compliment - they're saying that the OP wrote a good, long post, which deserves to be on the sidebar longer than a typical message board post will last.

They'll be his players, but…

They'll be his players, but it's a lot to ask a coach to effectively build a roster from scratch in one offseason and be competitive.  Fans are going to need to be patient next season.

Moser is not a great…

Moser is not a great comparison.  Moser had a pretty nondescript career for a long time, including getting fired from one job (Illinois State) and having to go back to being an assistant, until he achieved a breakthrough in his 14th year as a head coach.

May's situation is very different.  He inherited a program that was seriously down in the dumps, immediately got them to a higher level, started posting winning conference records from year three on and then had a massive breakthrough in year five.  This, at a commuter school with apparently terrible facilities and almost no history of success.

You could argue that his track record isn't all that long, which is true enough, but that was also going to be the case for pretty much anyone we were targeting.

 Before that group, he was…

Before that group, he was bad

I don't think that's a fair assessment.  May replaced Michael Curry (YTMC), who posted these records:

9-20 (2-16 CUSA)

8-25 (5-13)

10-20 (6-12)

12-19 (6-12)

May then posted these records:

17-16 (8-10)

17-15 (8-10)

13-10 (7-5)

19-15 (11-7)

35-4 (18-2)

25-9 (14-4 AAC)

Every one of his seasons was better than any of Curry's, both overall and in conference.
