|7 weeks 1 hour ago||I almost hate to say this...||
It didn't sound like an actual Emerson quote to me, so I googled it. Apparently the speaker was one Wayne Woodrow Hayes, as quoted in Rosenberg's book War As They Knew It.
|12 weeks 3 days ago||Cafe Marie||
I haven't been in a couple years, but as a former North Campus resident I enjoyed Cafe Marie, near Plymouth and Murfin. Not sure if they do takeout, though.

We have a blue heeler, and she is the best frickin' dog I've ever had.

Our dogs are named Victors and Calyptors. (Tori and Callie, for short.)
|27 weeks 3 days ago||Thanks in advance to the volunteers...||
Thanks in advance, folks. I haven't really been able to keep up with this recently. (Surprise! Having a toddler makes it hard to watch the games, let alone stay active on mgoblog.)
I thought I'd weigh in real quick to answer a couple of the questions that popped up. Google makes editing the maps really straightforward. I'll add the volunteers as approved map editors and send out a quick How-To, but it's not hard. As far as knowing what places to add, I just visited the Bar Location thread every now and again and made changes based on suggestions from posters in the thread, along with any other related forum threads I saw. I also checked the "official" list to make sure the map was consistent with their locations.
m1817: that is just the list of official alumni club locations. The map is an attempt to also include "M-Friendly" bars, i.e. those that will always have the game on and have regular Michigan attendance, even if it's not sanctioned by the alumni association. If you check out the map, every blue pin indicates a non-official location (and there are a lot of them).

Now is the winter of Assault with Intent
Made more of a bummer by Csont'e York.

We've got a guest room and could certainly put you up for the weekend.

My parents are both Cincinnati alums, and so the only football games I ever went to growing up were UC homecoming games. My freshman year at UM was 2002, so my first Michigan game was the last second Brabbs field goal to win against Washington.
Needless to say, I was hooked.
|39 weeks 4 days ago||FYI for Ann Arbor residents:||
The Secretary of State near Maple and Dexter is the least unpleasant one I've ever had to wait at. The employees were actually... cheerful? I don't know how else to describe it, though it was the first evidence I've seen that DMV employees retain the capacity to experience positive emotions.

If college athletes do successfully unionize, there could be a recruiting advantage for schools in right-to-work states. Presumably student-athletes at schools in right-to-work states (like, uh, Michigan) could not be forced to join the union as a condition of their scholarships. Schools in these states could offer recruits a choice of whether to join the union or not. This would be especially interesting in the hypothetical Brian raises, where schools collectively bargain with the union to get rid of one-and-dones.
"You want to get to the NBA as soon as possible? Commit to Michigan and don't join the union. Go to Kentucky, you're stuck there for at least two years."
(I'm not trying to get political, and not passing judgement for or against right to work laws. Merely pointing this out.)
|1 year 5 weeks ago||Avon Old Farms||
"Connecticut doesn’t exactly have the reputation of being a great football state or a place where a lot of talent comes from . . . ."
I believe that his high school, Avon Old Farms, is also the home of former Wolverine Michael Cox. So, there is at least some history of talented players from the area heading to Ann Arbor.
|1 year 27 weeks ago||Can someone take over map editing duties?||
I was the one who created and maintained the map in the original thread. So, it turns out that having a 1-year-old is not really conducive to spending a ton of time on mgoblog. If someone else could take over the map, I would really appreciate it. Google maps makes it really easy to update, I just don't have the free time these days. Shoot me an email at jayloh-at-gmail-dot-com and I'll gladly hand over the reins.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Map needs a new editor||
I haven't updated the map at all this season - we had a baby in early September, so I've been a bit busy. Would anyone else be willing/able to take over as map editor? It's not hard at all. Shoot me an email: jayloh [at] gmail dot com.

I've had the restart problem with Downcast, but ONLY if I try to stream the podcast rather than download it first. Once it's downloaded in its entirety, it works fine. I'm not sure how the official Apple podcasts app works, but perhaps it's a streaming issue?
(Also, I heartily recommend Downcast. It is a great, great app.)

|3 years 17 weeks ago||Why isn't he still the coach of the future?||
I thought the assumption was that he took the Tech job to build his resume before Red's inevitable retirement? My memory is that Brian or somebody reported that Dave Brandon wanted to make sure that Red's replacement had head coaching experience, which prompted Mel to look elsewhere.

|3 years 23 weeks ago||Baltimore location changed, apparently||
Someone left a comment on the google map that the Baltimore viewing location has been changed from Ropewalk to a place called Crazy Lil's, so I updated the map to reflect this.
|3 years 26 weeks ago||Up-to-date as of 9/2/2011||
I hadn't been in this thread for a while, so the map was a bit out-of-date. I think I've got everything updated now. If anyone knows of any other places, or sees info on the map that's incorrect, let me know and I'll fix it.
|3 years 31 weeks ago||Easy there, guys||
I don't read this or Misopogon's previous post as accusing Hoke of abusing medical scholarships or doing anything shady. They're pointing out that we're in the uncomfortable situation where our coach has publicly committed to taking more recruits than we were aware we had scholarships for. Now that we find out where those scholarships are coming from, it's understandable that some would cock an eyebrow.
Brian's bound to write something one way or the other, after his one-man campaign against the Saban/Nutt school of recruiting. I wouldn't be surprised if he writes essentially what all of us are thinking - if Hoke was going to Saban anyone, he'd go after the slot ninjas, not Pace and Talbott. Regardless, if he doesn't cover it in some form, we'll be seeing all the ESS-EEE-SEE bloggers call him a hypocrite.
EDIT: just to be clear, this was meant as a reply to MCalibur, MGoShoe, Don, etc.
|3 years 32 weeks ago||Nah, go with player names.||
Woodson for a boy, Biakabutuka for a girl. (That's a good girl's name, right?)
|3 years 32 weeks ago||Is it too late to kill this "B1G" thing?||
Just because the conference decides to give itself a silly new logo doesn't mean we have to buy in and use it ourselves. It only takes three more keystrokes to type out "Big 10", and it's definitely worth the effort.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Congratulations!||
Glad to hear it. Things are trending upwards, but it's still a tough market.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Offtopic, but were you able to find a biglaw job?||
I remember a thread from quite a while ago where you mentioned that OCI hadn't gone so well. Hope everything worked out.

I gotta say, I love the background music for that highlight reel - seems perfect for a big guy like that. The only way it could get better would be if this was the soundtrack.
|4 years 7 weeks ago||I'm guessing you're at ND Law?||
I spent all last semester combing the Midwest for summer jobs, and wound up finding one with a firm in Indy. If you have an interest in talking strategy, drop me a line at jaloh [at] nlaw [dot] northwestern [dot] edu
|4 years 7 weeks ago||Truth||
With patent prosecution, you know all your deadlines far in advance. You can plan accordingly and actually, you know, have a life outside the office.
(So I've been told, anyway. I'll find out for sure this summer and report back.)
|4 years 7 weeks ago||Networking is key||
I know a couple weaker students who got summer jobs long before I did, because they knew the right people at the right firms.
Also, your first semester grades don't have much bearing on your final GPA. My first semester was pretty average, but it's come up every semester since then.
|4 years 22 weeks ago||I should clarify,||
I'm not sure if he meant they were working with YouTube and Justin.tv in a general, ongoing sense, or if he was talking about some new specific push.
