Lloyd and RR Lloyd has never embraced RR and never "welcomed" him into the Michigan family. Lloyd's silence during the Freep fiasco speaks volumes about where he stands. From more than one source, including a former player under Bo, the same story emerges that there are Lloyd supporters and on the other side there are those that are willing to give RR a fair chance. This divisiveness both within the Department and among former players has contributed to some of the negative press. I think RR has handled it very well and has never publicly complained about the internal issues.
LLoyd let M down on this one When RR gets more support from other Big Ten coaches including "Sweater Vest" than he does from his own school, there is a problem. Judy Van Horn and the entire compliance group at UM are first rate and they were there during Lloyd's tenure. Lloyd could at least have supported the University's compliance program but he chose to remain silent.
Discord It's not just alumni who are concerned about RR. There is a rift within the athletic department (broadly defined as current administration and former players) with one side not comfortable with RR's demeanor. He is not a Michigan man in the eyes of these traditionalists. It speaks volumes that Lloyd Carr has not supported Rodriquez in any meaningful way. Tradition, honor, values, understanding what makes Michigan "the leaders and best" are all areas where RR has not convinced many that he belongs.
Let's Get Physical When Robinson indicated he would coach from the sidelines and not in the booth like Shafer, that was the first indication that he can help this defense. Defense needs to be played with emotion and Shafer upstairs hiding behind his clipboard did nothing to rally his troops when they needed it. Jim Herrman had passion on the sidelines and his defenses played with some great physical intensity. Let's hope the swarming Michigan 'D' is back!
