|39 weeks 3 days ago||I was in the sport management||
I was in the sport management program at UofM for 3 semesters 05-06. It became clear to me that a switch to LSA and a degree in something like economics, accounting, business, computer science has far better value long term and that sports management was probably a waste of a few thousand dollars each semester. While I'd been a die hard sports fan since I can remember I didn't share that same passion for the behind the scene aspect of the industy and decided I'd better keep my options open.
My advice for somebody thinking about a sports management degree or entering the industry would be to major in a subject which could be useful in the sports field but has value and could lead to opportunities in other fields as well. Get an internship/work study somewhere in the athletic department, facilities management or marketing, to get a feel for the industry. Plan on either staying oncampues over the summer and working the spring sports/fall prep or finding another internship for the summer. Experience and networking are everything.
This plan would have you as well-placed to enter the field after your 4-5 years as anyone with a sports management degree in addition having far more options in the overall job market.
If for whatever reason somebody has thier heart set on a sports management degree then don't pay top dollar at a school like Michigan. Go somewhere where you can minimize your post-school debt obligation because entty-level salaries are shit.
Like someone mentioned, entry into the sports industry is tough, starting salaries are low, and you're going to have very little flexibility in terms of job choice or location because you won't have many opportunities/offers to chose from.
Having said all that, I did enjoy my experience and never found myself close to getting swamped academically (although the prgram is not the cakewalk that many people think. the workload is more project/group/paper oriented and less knowledge/theory/fact cramin), and I can tell people I had classes with current and former pro-athletes, olympians, WCWS walk-off ledgends and took a class taught by a former-NHL veteran and Berenson assistant who shared some incredible stories about the early years of the program under Red and his experience as an athelete at UofM. He also wasn't afriad to critizie the university's athletic department openly in class (this would play out on a larger stage a short while later on the radio station wtka) which I found hilarious but more importantly really opened my eyes to the hyprocisry rampant in college athletics. It would end up being the class I felt I got the most for bang for my buck while in college.

Today was the second time I noticed the mlax games in the results/calendar section on the mgoblue homepage. There was even a link to a men's lacrosse page however it was completely blank. The games aren't appearing now though.

Weird. It's like there's one guy posting the mlax info and another guy going around taking all down.

And anybody that pays even a little attention to this stuff is going to get 63/65 a decent amount of the time. 64 is good but I'd expect a pro bracketologist to be getting 64+ almost every year.

That couldn't have gone any better. Still a tough group, but any group for us would have been difficult. Algeria are a strong team that has benefited from the new nationality rules, thus gaining players who have played for other nations' youth squads, not to mention winning a do-or-die playoff against favorites Egpyt last month. Slovenia should not be overlooked either. They finished 2nd in a tough qualifying group consisting of Slovakia, Poland, and the Czech Republic and then upset heavily favored Russia in a home and away playoff. Slovenia have quality players throughout the european leagues. Oh, and there's that match against England to kick it all off in Rustenburg.
This will be a good tournament for the US, one that they will be expected to advance out of the group stages.
|4 years 41 weeks ago||I think the fact that the||
I think the fact that the 2002 World Cup was not in Europe is really underrated. I'm of the belief that most European teams get a real boost when playing in Europe and I think we'll see the non-Euro teams have better results like they did in 2002 down in South Africa. So maybe it wasn't that the US was better in 2002 or worse in 2006 but that the Euro teams played better in 2006 than they did in 2002.
I agree that US is overrated in the rankings. Without really looking at things I'd say we'd be the 3rd/4th best team in Africa, 5th/6th in South America, and anywhere from 1st to 3rd in Asia. I think those are realistic rankings, not taking into account injuries and stuff like that.

At least Altidore is finally cracking the starting lineup at Hull. Hopefully he starts finding the back of the net soon. Without Davies we are sadly short on capable strikers and my hope is that Papa Bradley pairs up Altidore with Dempsey and inserts one of Holden/Castillo/Torres out wide.
Defense (goalkeeping specifically) has never really been our problem, it has always been our inability to finish in the attacking third.

I'd definitely prefer Chile to Uruguay. South America is weird with their crazy home field advantages and insane fans. On a neutral pitch I think Uruguay are the better side and they have more recognizable names (Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez, etc).

The Ike-Clarkston game was on the Comcast 900 Saturday night and I caught most of the 4th quarter. Not only did Clarkston fumble the ball with a minute to go when they were basically running out the clock, but with 8 seconds to go Ike was inside the Clarkston 15, completed a first down pass to the 2 or 3 yard line with 2 seconds on the clock, which stopped for the first down. When the clock started up again, IKE spiked the ball with 1 second to go to set up the game winning TD pass as time expired.
However, the replay showed the snap was a clear fumble (that Clarkston recovered) and the ref prematurely blew his whistle because the Ike QB made the spiking motion with his hand even though he did not have the ball.

I wouldn't categorize the loss to Alaska as embarrassing. It's always tough to play up there and the Nanooks appear to have a competent team again this year. We seemed to have found a bit of offense this past weekend up at Lake St and I'm hoping that can carry over into the next two weekends (home/away w/MSU after MNTM).
Also, both game against Miami will be televised on Comcast.

Justin Meram scored early in the 3rd but Akron quickly answered with a 4th minutes later.
Michigan had 3 very good chances in the first half but a six minute spell late that saw Akron get their first 3 goals pretty much shut the door.
I've been to most games over the last 7 years and this Akron team is probably the best I've seen play. Not that there's been a lot of top notch competition coming to Ann Arbor but I think they're better than the Indiana teams that won championships in 2003 and 2004.

The game you were at was the competition field and that is where the 'stadium' will eventually be. They only thing temporary are the bleachers. They are starting construction on that very soon if they haven't already and have moved the remainder for the men's and women's soccer games to the west field where they played last year.
However, I don't know why that would keep the BTN away. Last year they broadcast the Michigan State game on the west field so it's not like that field isn't BTN compatible. A friend of mine that works with the women's team did tell me however that last weekend's women's game against Indiana was moved back to the competition field from west field at the request of the BTN even though the bleachers had already been removed from the site.

|4 years 48 weeks ago||Akron's been a top 10 team||
Akron's been a top 10 team for a last couple of years. They've been ranked #1 before and I believe were top ranked four years ago when Michigan played them. It was a 1-0 loss for the good guys. Actually, the last three games have ended 1-0 with Michigan going 1-2 although last year a missed penalty cost us a draw.
Additionally to what FA said, there's probably some connection with foreign players going to smaller schools but I don't know enough about that say to much.
|4 years 48 weeks ago||M Soccer||
While it's not exactly the weekend. Men's Soccer hosts undefeated and #1 ranked Akron on Tuesday night.
The Zips are 12-0 and have out scored their opponents 35-2 on the season. Akron and Michigan have had four common opponents; Akron won @Cincinnati 4-0 (Michigan won 2-0), vs Indiana 1-0 (0-1), vs Bowling Green 6-0 (5-1), and @Western 4-0 (5-1).
Michigan arguably deserved points last weekend against Indiana and this will be another opportunity for a big win. It's the last non-conference game of the regular season.

|4 years 49 weeks ago||Men's Soccer||
Lost 1-0. Michigan could have had 3 or 4 goals but the Indiana keeper was unbeatable and had the save of the day with literally two seconds left on a shot for Justin Meram that was going into the far corner. That would have sent the game into overtime. Indiana's goal came directly off a bad turnover in the defensive third.
Last year Michigan beat Indiana in the regular season but were knocked out of the conference tournament(semis) and NCAA tournament(Sweet 16) by the Hoosiers.

I wandered over and caught the last 35 minutes or so of the game against Iowa. I had no idea what was going on, the basic rules of the game, or why the ref would award penalty corners, but it was fun. None of the marketing guys seemed to know what was going on either.
I wikipediaed the rules when I got home so I think I have a better understanding now, but it's still kind of a goofy game to watch.

I haven't seen anything from this team that warrants a big change is predictions. Ok, 4-0 is nice but that's just a fluky win away from being 3-1, which was where everyone probably thought we'd be at this point. This team is young and inexperienced and yet to be tested on the road. Every remaining game (except Del St) could be a loss or a win.

I found that worrying isn't much fun now that we have so many reasons to be excited.

|4 years 51 weeks ago||boo poker analogies||
I've seen 3 poker analogies recently on these boards. 2 have sucked. The other was meh ok and posted by Brian in the ND postgame thread.
The player should call in scenario 2 like 98% of the time. You need some pretty wacky structure/chip stacks/side bets to make that a fold. EVER.
I understand the concept you're trying to get across though. Sometimes the +cEV (chip EV) play is not always a +$EV play. This much is obvious.
However in football there really isn't an equivalent to tournament poker. It's a cash game without the rake. Every 4th down has a EV and you should always take the option that yields the most positive EV and there are four options to choose from. Go for it, punt, kick a FG. Each option has different factors that determine its EV.
If you find yourself in a 4th down situation on your own 30 and the most positive EV play is to go for it you better go for it.

Also of interest to the Michigan faithful is that former Wolverine standout Peri Marosevic will be competing for the US U-20 team in Egypt later this summer at the U-20 World Cup. Peri has started 4 of 5 games with the this year tallying a goal and an assist is has the most goals for the U-20 team (5) of all the players on the roster for the tournament.
