Other than the things that…

Other than the things that Tracy and Tucker agreed on:

- they had multiple phone calls

- Tucker whipped out his penis

I don't know what else Mel said that was truthful. There have been so many demonstrates lies, half-truths and weird Tucker moments from the investigation and from statements afterwards that it would be reasonable to find him (at the minimum) unreliable.

Hey there (PM&R doc here - I…

Hey there (PM&R doc here - I do a little brain injury, lots of sports medicine, which includes headaches, but excludes YOUR headache).

A few things not mentioned so far:

1) bring someone you trust (spouse, sibling, parent, etc) to every doctors appointment. Give them a job: take notes. YOU will certainly get too much information to process. Having another pair of eyes and ears is very helpful (presuming the person you bring isn't freaking out themselves).

2) It is OK to look up stuff online, but probably limit this to professional organizations and trusted hospitals (Mayo clinic has a pretty good website for patients, for example). You are probably already doing this, but I'm here to tell you that is ok, and very normal. Use a LOT of common sense. Here is a link to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons article on pituitary tumors:

https://www.aans.org/Patients/Neurosurgical-Conditions-and-Treatments/Pituitary-Gland-and-Pituitary-Tumors

3) They will be doing a lot of blood work. Pituitary tumors often make a bunch of different hormones, so testing ahead of time will help decide which kind of tumor they can expect. A good question to ask would be: 'is there anything else you need to test for when I go to get my blood checked?' That may trigger the physician to say, 'yeah, we may as well get this one too.' Always better to get stuck once for 5 tests than to have to go back 5 times. Same thing goes for imaging (CAT scans and MRIs). Get comfy with those. You will be having more of them.

4) If the surgeon has a Nurse Practitioner, or Physician's Assistant, you should expect to see them. You may see them MORE than you see the surgeon. That can be ok. They will be passing on information to the surgeon, while they handle the bread and butter stuff. Not all offices do this, but I am often surprised about how often patients are shocked that they see the NP more than the doc. It's almost normal practice now, so you aren't being ignored in case this happens at some point.

5) Your job is to notice symptoms. Your medical team will be the ones to decide whether or not to be worried. Don't presume something is minor or major issue. If you notice something change, tell them. They will decide whether it's important or not.

6) find portable ways to distract yourself. There is a LOT of downtime in medicine. Waiting for the doc, waiting for labs, waiting for a MRI, etc. Phones are useful; little books of sudoko, crosswords, etc are also awesome and don't need to get charged. You should probably have a backpack with a charger, headphones, book, notebook and pen that you can take with you to appointments. The man-purse of a backpack is super duper helpful on the day they give you 200 pages of stuff to bring home. Also, I assure you, at some point you will be happy you have your charger.

Even in a best-case-scenario you will have a bunch more doctor's visits than you anticipated.
That super sucks and I'm really sorry you have to go through this. But the reality is that most pituitary tumors are treatable and long term survival is really good. Also, as mentioned above, this seems like a scary surgery, but the side effects and recovery are much better than other surgeries.

My reading of Brian's…

My reading of Brian's article, and my person feeling at this moment, is more of a moral fatigue.

Baylor was hideous, but it's the South. Ol Miss was always dirty. PSU was shocking, but certainly an abberation. Right?

MSU was kind of the tipping point for me. But the collective collegiate failure to respond to the MSU event told me that the industry of COLLEGE simply does not have any morality. While the act of an evil man is evil, the organized response to that action, the failure to do anything punitive, the failure to admit wrongdoing, by ANYONE . . . I honestly can't rehash that shit again, but you get my point, I'm sure . . .MSU, BigTen, NCAA did nothing meaningful and convinced me of their amorality.

The OSU event (even though smaller in scale), so close to the beginning of the season, is asking me: why do I care about the sport?

I love Michigan. I got to run out of the tunnel in the band. I got to help call a game in the booth once with student radio. It's been 25 years and I think about Michigan almost every day. But. . .should I care about the sport?  Does the current state of morality within the sport outweigh my love of it?

A kid was essentially coached to death a few weeks ago and his coach was only suspended because a reporter outed him - the university WANTED TO IGNORE IT. Those are bad people. Those are not good people. President of the university, AD, Head Coach, Trainer - all are bad people and should be fired, several might need to face criminal charges. Where is the BIGTEN and NCAA on this? Why hasn't the conference taken action? They are filled with bad people who either don't care or who can do nothing.

Does it matter if I love watching the game? Love watching the players get better? Love watching 19 year old figure out how to do pressers? Love reading stuff here? Does that all love and support go to an industry that filters billions of dollars and untold influence to people who should have neither?

It's not just college sports…

It's not just college sports. It's ALL sports for me. Are the guys in MLB or NFL better - either ownership or players? How about FIFA, is that really an honorable organization? NASCAR?

Frankly, I don't know if I'm just becoming a bitter old man, if the world is getting shittier, or if the world was always shitty, but I am just hearing about it now . . .

Thank all the tiny gods for John Beilein - he's like a ray of light these days . . .

Seconded for costco.

They…

Seconded for costco.

They have an amazing return policy. Selection is usually pretty limited, but what they do have is good. Prices are very competitive.

sorry for your wife's pain!

This is actually a common effect of abdominal surgery. Much of the literature on the topic is from ob/gyn. I am really disappointed that the staff was so surprised by the pain!

I posted a longer explaination for the issue below (was writing at the same time you were). You are 100% correct chaning position can make the pain better - and the nerve irritation less. Usually laying down or laying on your side makes it better, but everybody is built differently, so sitting up would work for some people. After the few days changing positions is often less effective (some people do get ongoing relief from changing positions).

There was an article I read that suggested if laying on your back or side helps, the triggering issue may be the presence of the gas, but if sitting up makes it better the triggering issue might be the mechanical stress of the gas stretching the diaphragm away from the liver capsule (because sitting up, or even leaning forward a little, would reduce that stretch).  Right now they have ruled the CO2 being the ONLY cause and body fluids from surgery as being the ONLY cause.  I presume that there are multiple irritants to the phrenic nerve and if you get enough of any of them you might have shoulder pain.

Hopefully your wife's shoulder pain improved quickly.

Get well

Glad you're feeling a little better!

Also, I wanted to drop a quick doctor note here: with abdominal surgery (especially laproscopy) something can irritate your diaphragm (the muscle at the top of the abdomen/bottom of the thoaracic cavity that controls your breathing). The exact mechanism isn't fully understood, some people think it's the CO2 used, some people think it's more of a mehanical issue from stretching your organs around from getting inflated, etc... The diaphragm is controlled by the phrenic nerve; this nerve then reads the signal as shoulder pain. The nerve confusion is because the phrenic nerve arises from the neck (C3,4,5 - mostly C4) in the same area where the nerves that control shoulder sensation arise and the signals get kinda confused by the brain. This is usually called 'referred' pain. [there are other kinds of positional shoulder pain from surgeries, but these are almost never bilateral]

If this kind of pain lasts more than a few weeks without significantly improving, it would be extremely rare. If the pain does linger for multiple weeks at a higher level, there are usually medications that can help reduce the pain. As I said - the pain almost always goes away on its own as the nerve irritation improves. This is one of those, 'more annoying than clinically significant' issues that I am certain many folks (especially ACE) are familiar with.

Given the nature of the mgoblog audience, I thought a drop of explanation for this kind of issue would be appropriate.

#science

[for the other clinicians in the audience, I have simplified this for mass consumption - if you want to bust out pathology slides or get into a pub-med article war, please to enjoy]

[I'm a physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Folks come see me with 'shoulder pain' complaints regularly]

Assumptions

There is an assumption inherrent in your argument above that Nebraska is undervalued.

The original Tweet pointed out an earely season prediction that was inaccurate. That is obviously a true thing. Nebraska won more games than they were predicted to win.If that defines undervalued, then you're correct. It is correct that based on November predictions Nebraska has more wins.

But if you are saying, as we sit here today, they should be considered a top 40 or top 30 team? I don't know that many people outside of Lincoln agree with that assessment. And you have certainly failed to meet the burden of proof for that.

The over-riding reponse the board seems to be making here is one of two things:

1) Tempo is not the sole proximate cause of this early season prediction error

2) It's not that Nebraska is a LOT better (although obviously they ARE better) than predicted, it's that a big section of their competition was a lot worse than predicted.

Also, you keep pointing out a 6 year old blog post from KenPom to support your claims. You repeatedly say that KenPom's model is flawed (you're *saying* biased, but you *mean* flawed). You know? He answered you in the article:

"Of course it’s flawed. The thing is, your knowledge is flawed, too."

Settlement

The problem with settlement is authority.

MSU wants to settle the case, but the insurance companies will never authorize, as they will want to sue to get removed from the case. Therefore, if MSU wants to settle, they will have to pay the full share, up front, on their own, without a president.

Who will authorize that? I suppose the State Treasurer, AG or Governor could do it. But right now, I doubt any officer at the university has the authority to pull a 9 figure deal.

I would be stunned if this settles. Currently MSU will have motions to dismiss civil suits based on government agency (there are limits there too, as individual agents CAN he held accountable - right former president and current bitch without a job Simon?), and as soon as those fail - and they will likely fail - the insurance companies will be suing to be removed as responsible parties.

We are at the beginning of a mutliple year morass. Probably would have been better for everybody if they worked harder to prevent people from going around raping and serial molesting.

Geography

I wonder if distance from home is an issue?

Nothing clever

I have no pithy comment

This leaves me feeling nothing other than rage.

Fuck you for ignoring literally scores of molested children MSU!

play or not play

The odds of his knee being stable enough to play are just too small. If he *IS* health enough to play, and his knee holds up, he might be able to return to form.

I suspect that Newsome at 80% is better than what we will have 1/2/2018, not because they aren't improving, but because Newsome looked like he was heading into very positive territory prior to his injury.

Reason for the trip

Given how rapidly things were happening, I suspect that they met with admissions or academic counselors to see what could be done with the transcripts.

I disagree that a high profile visit is bad optics if it does not pan out. If the school and the kids meet, get along, but things don't work out and everybody speaks well of one another . . . .I think that shows some professionalism. It has seemed to me that although everything was done quickly, it was also done with a clear eye on compliance. If the University needed to bend too far to shoe horn them in academically, that might have put the kids in a bad spot academically. That may justify a face to face conversation.

Depth Chart

I agree that the biggest issues on the depth chart will be on the OLine.

And while nothing would make Christmas brighter than having Grant Newsome back on the depth chart, even in a blog prediction.......I don't think he'll be there. 14 months off from the field is a really long time.  I had previously seen that he was jogging, but I couldn't find the link when I went back to search for it just now. The recent Freep article about him mentioned all the classroom stuff, but didn't mention anything at all physical (which would have been much more encouraging).

Replacing Cole and finding a full time RT will be huge. There will obviously be ongoing depth issues there as well.

Why?

Why does this seem like a good hire for ASU in your opinion?

I suspect that having a coach with previous NFL head coaching experience might be an asset. But lots of programs have ties to the NFL from current and former players, coaches and staff. And although he had a long string of head coaching assisgnments, his last hire was 9 years ago.

He was (and appearantly still is) a commentator for ESPN, so he has good name recognition. And that is a legitimate value when you walk into somebody's house. Bringing in a minor celebrity to a football house would be appealing to lots of recruits ASU is aiming for.

So, maybe he can be the face of the program, but leave the nuts and bolts to the pretty solid assistant coaches that are already in place? I think if that is the upside, it's kinda thin for a power 5, and kinda short sighted for a program that was doing a really decent job of turning themselves around without Ole Miss style issues.

Personally, I think it is far more likely that the current AD just wanted to bring in "HIS GUY".

Clarification

Clearwater and Clearwater Beach are different areas.

Clearwater is where the GIGANTIC Scientology Center is (no comment, just a fact); across the bridge is Clearwater Beach. If you are going for the weekend, Clearwater Beach is actually really a great beach. There is a standard beach town row of hotels along the beach, a few of them are pretty new and REALLY nice. There are also several nice hotels in nearby Sand Key. The only issue is beachfront traffic can be a pain in the ass (airport to beach 30-60 minutes depending on traffic, but the drive is very easy).

I am reasonably sure last time UM was at the Outback Bowl there was a game event held at Clerawater Beach with the band, cheerleaders, etc.

My virtually worthless advice:

If you're just going to the game, or not renting a car, staying closer to the stadium and airport make sense.

If you're going to be there for a few days, and renting a car, stay somewhere by the beach.

From coach This was from Coach Harbaugh’s presser on monday. Frankly, I found it really surprising because he so rarely talks about injuries: Can you say how close Brandon Peters was to playing? Did it go right down to the end of the week? O’Korn said he was told Monday he would be starting? Was there still a possibility? “Um, there…no. The symptoms were there all week with Brandon, so there was no time that he got to practice, and he wasn’t cleared for the ballgame.” Having active symptoms means he wasnt advancing through the recivery protocol (probably). 90% of concussions are symptom free in 10 days.
Speculation about Peters Given the duration and severity of Peters symptoms, it’s didficult to speculate about the timing of his return. Once he is symptom free, the consensus among Brain Injury experts is one week before returning to full play (link at the bottom). Prolonged symptoms are generally felt to advance more gradually through recovery, but protocols about this vary between institutions. The ortho, neurology, sports medicine and PM&R teams at UM are top-notch. I presume Peters is getting pretty great care. I also presume that nobody with the team, the University or the Peters family would risk his future by returning prematurely, or advancing his protocol too rapidly. Luckily there is lots of time before the bowl. If I was a betting man (and I am) I woukd say odds if Peters rerurning are 5-1 in favor (maybe better). [just for reference: http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/47/5/250.full ]
Not the worst Rutgers certainly is not good, but they are no longer the worst team in the Big Ten. I agree that I need to temper my personal optimism because of the degree of competition, but when I started comparing the 1Q with the 3Q against the same team, that’s where my optimism kicks in. The chances of us scoring against Wisconsin and OSU have increased. Hopefully with more game time they will continue to improve.
hard to judge

I would be very reluctant to judge how Harbaugh talks to the team based on how he talks to the press. It seems clear that he has an inside vs outside view of some of this - like many coaches do.

We've certainly seen Harbaugh have angry pressers before, and silly ones too.

But to draw a conclusion about how he talks to the team at halftime based on bland comments to the press seems like a reach.

I completely understand the idea; I see where that would come from - especially THIS year where Harbaugh looks kinda fatgiued in talking to the press - but when you look at him with groups of students, ANY students, you see a lot more enthusiasm. I suspect that he just saves the emotion for the team.

Higdon

Karan Higdon did a better job seeing his cutbacks than he has for much of the year. Doing that against some very good DTs and a solid linebacking group was a positive. I wish he had more than 12 carries.

Elbel Field / Revelli Hall

Band rehearsal on Friday afternoon is great if you can make it.

There are bleachers right at the edge of the field. When you sit that close you can often physically FEEL the sound. It's pretty great.

We always get to Revelli Hall about 2 hours before kickoff (with coffe and bagels/donuts) and watch the step show (a longstanding Saturday tradition). Seeing the drumline up close is really fun. They will play some fancy warm ups, parts of that week's show, Temptation and War Chant. Every year changes a little, every week changes a little, but it's very cool. It's MUCH cooler if you can see everybody well, so getting there early helps.

Also, AFTER the game, the band will play a post-game show on the field that is worth watching if you dont want to fight the crowds on the way out.

Revelli Hall is 350 E Hoover.

Here is one of the shows from last year:

Harbaugh's response

Can anybody imagine Harbaugh dodging this question if asked about another coach?

Anybody teaching football would get an enthusiastic response from Jim. Hell, I'm getting enthused just THINKING about his enthusiasm.

+1 for the edit. I initially +1 for the edit. I initially only raised the point because there are schools around town that are actually destitute, and struggling for stuff in a major way. So I appreciate the fix. Also, thanks for linking to her project. Her project is totally worthy. Schools need funds. Period. She is asking for help to get chromebooks into the hands of her students with need. I'm glad she's an alum, she's doing good, and it's helping my home town. All good.
You're right about a bunch of You're right about a bunch of stuff here. I spent some more time looking at Christopher House. It's been around a long time. It's a not for profit. My assumption was that it was managed by the LEARN or NOBLE networks of schools. Christopher House is not. So thanks for setting me straight there. However, I made no assumption about classroom income. I merely stated that the NEIGHBORHOOD (which is about 5 blocks from where both of my parents went to high school and only about a mile from where I grew up), is not poverty-ridden. I explicitly stated that classrooms with ESL are more likely to be below the neighborhood income. The only 4 years in my life I didn't live within 5 mikes of that school is when I was in Ann Arbor. I know that stretch of Belmont really well. But, I've never been in Christopher House. Also, I think my post was super clear about the teachers need and the worthiness of her campaign to get her students chromebooks. So, whatever assumptions I made about the school I am 100% willing to stand corrected. However, if you think I an uninformed about the city's north side neighborhoods, you're hilariously wrong.

Teachers have it really Teachers have it really hard
But I looked up the school. 5500 W Belmont (unless there is another school of the same name) is not is an area of massive poverty. It's the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. It's a fairly average, perhaps slightly below average, neighborhood. That being said, ESL students are typically living far below average. My cousin teachers at a neighboring high school. I grew up around there and know the area quite well.
I am sure that this charter school (owned by a for/profit company) underfunds the school. I am equally sure this teacher really needs the funds for her students.
This is a good and worthy project, but doesn't need the hyperbole to be worthy of attention.

Now its USC, lol

Good for them

I think these camps, especially the multi-school camps are great for kids. Even if they dont get recruited by one of the visiting schools, they get coaching and obviously a very cool experience.

other possibilities

He could really easily be communicating with recruits too. Or if that is not allowed, than 'friends' of recruits (I honestly don't know what the communications limitations are with active players).

If he knows he isn't going to be called on to get in the game, that is one of the more valuable things he could be doing.

Bringing a cell phone onto the sidelines is not going to be missed by staff, or the national TV cameras. While it is possible that he smuggled the phone in, I think it's more likely that it was allowed.

Alvarez and B1G sports

I did a super scientific run down of some random B1G sports and SEC sports, just to check Barry's math.

Total varisty sports:
Florida - 19
UGA - 19
Ole Miss - 16
BAMA - 15
Tenn - 14

Wisc - 23
Illinois - 19
Indy - 22

Univeristy of Michigan - 27

So, Barry pays for more sports than the SEC. But he only has four more sports than UGA or Florida. He's in charge of the budget. If he chooses to pay asistants less, he must feel that the have less value than money spent on other things. However, it's not 'Wiscy is poor', it's simply Barry's choice.

I agree with your idea that modestly increasing revenue could fill that gap pretty easily. Hell, he could get SPONSORS for the positions:

Culver's Frozen Custard Presents UW Linebacker's Coach
Don Ameche QB coach
Kohler's Defensive Coordinator
Joan Cusack's Women's Gymnastics Recruiting Coordinator

The possibilities are endless.

(Yes, I Google'd for UW alums)

Not entirely sure He did not Not entirely sure
He did not win enough games - certainly not enough BIG games - but his name isn't complete mud.
He treated his players well. He runs a high class program. I bet lots of the high school coaches are still happy to work with him. Players who are not heading to Top 25 programs will get a high character guy with good connections.
As far as the 'optics' go, 'former UM football coach' is a pretty easy sell for a much smaller program.

Dangerous

The only word for a boss, or other person in authority, to disregard medical advice is: dangerous. This is a person who will cause harm to others through their disregard of basic safety.

Sports medicine folks WANT players to play. Part of the training understands that the goal is to get players healthy enough to play, and to keep them in good health while playing.

Finishing a series, or a game, or a practice, with a developing injury can easily worsen it to the point that it jeapordizes that players season, career or long term health.

Also, Beckman is a dick.

Progress?

I really dislike the guy - but have I noticed a shift in his attitude somewhat? He's still a scowling, blustering twit . . . but this year he seems less so.

Or am I imagining it since we didn't play them?

Fly on the wall

It would be interesting to hear his conversation with the B1G about rules clarification. I just think he would pound them for clarity. "why was THIS, but not THIS?" "WHY?!?"

He is so clearly and openly passionate about FOOTBALL that it's pretty infectious. Reading the presser got ME riled up about some of those calls all over again.

Who's got it better than us?

MOON

This game has the interesting opportunity to have a similar score to last year's game, but be much more intersting. I don't mind low scoring games, as long as they are the product of strong football.

Last year's game was much more about the failure of the offenses than the success of the defenses. This year seems to be setting up like a low scoring slugfest, but hopefully due to great play from the defense.

So, if the halftime score is MO - ON (yes, yes, I realize it will be N0-0M), it may still be a really watchable game.
