How many

How many West Coast players reside in that state, exactly?

I get it

You're Harbaugh's former roommate! Your father's brother is your uncle. His nephew, assuming they had at least a 3rd sibling, is your cousin. So your father's brother's nephew's cousin is you.

Isn't that special.

You misread "one of the

Hill

Sure, but the assignment was Delano Hill's to blow and Bolden wouldn't have been playing in his stead.

I enjoyed that. Thank you.

I enjoyed that. Thank you.

Are we sure

Imhotep isn't just another acronym?

Sounds good

I certainly hope they have some sort of commitment from Love to give up two #1 overall picks for him, he's not good enough to pay that for a one year rental. My response wasn't a "this is what I think will happen" - it was a scenario where everything has gone tits up.

If you disagree that the probable outcome is that the Cavs don't win the title, I encourage you to lay a wager down next time you're in a suitable establishment.

"in anticipation of the move, Cleveland had its odds to win the 2014-15 NBA title reduced from 7-to-2 to 3-to-1 at the LVH SuperBook."

Not difficult. They probably

Not difficult. They probably won't win this year. They'll struggle to sign Love next summer with cap space tied up in James, Irving and Thompson.

Fast forward to 2016, when we're looking at a depleted Cavs, after one trip to the Finals where they lost in 5 and one 2nd round exit. Waiters has left to get paid, Love is in LA, Irving's knees are failing him, and there's no cap space because they overpaid Thompson (has James' agent) to reward James. James is 32 and declining and Wiggins is playing at Paul George' 1st half of the 2013-14 season-level.

Yes, there's plenty of room for the Cavs to mess this up. I hope they don't. Cleveland deserves a championship.

Worth it.

Good on him

I applaud the dad for sticking up for and believing in his son.

Best of luck to Dan Gibbs wherever he ends up. They can't all be Michigan players.

Experience counts

You're right, I'm sure, that he was mediocre, but surely a coach can improve with experience? I'm a casual NBA fan and don't know the Celtics that well, but Bill Simmons is a nut and die-hard, and he seems to think Rivers has really developed into a quality coach.

Joke fail

No way he takes the second bet, as he can easily clamp his false teeth over the other eye, too. You messed up the order of the first two bets.

Not fair

They shouldn't let this kid play another year of High School football. He's completely unplayable. Insane.

Kids like this, they should let him play college ball for a year, then go pro. All Day talent level. First round pick at 19 if he was allowed.

Disturbing

Probably my favorite football moment was... having... a climax with the two of them wildly swinging for eachother.
Floppy disks?

You had floppy disks? You were lucky.

"Press play on tape"

Crazy project

Our country is overflowing with money and this is just the kind of crazy infrastructure project that could only really happen here. I guess it makes some kind of sense given that it could open water ways for the fishing/fish farming industry and hopefully prevent some accidents/deaths. However, I think most countries would prioritize other projects with that kind of money.

Not often Norway gets mentioned on MGoBlog, but this is two mentions in just over a week.

Forgive me

Please forgive my poor wording. I agree that this is an inappropriate use of "allegedly". In order to educate this sports journalist and others who may use the word in the wrong context, I was hoping the brain trust of the board could provide better examples of where you might use "allegedly".

Anyone?

If not

If that's not an appropriate use of the word "allegedly", could someone please provide a better example?

No...

...proven.

While it has been alledged that CRAIG JAMES KILLED FIVE HOOKERS AT SMU, it is proven that he smothered his son to the point of getting Texas Tech's head coach fired. That exact sequence of events may be more alledged than proven, but the slightly over protective nature of his behavior is not.

Maybe...

...just maybe there might be just a tad more media attention on him now than there was then.

No worries

This is the internet. "I'm pretty sure mine is smaller than 6 inches" will never go through without comment.

No one

There SHOULD not be a pre-season ranking. How does it make sense to rank teams which have achieved nothing?

Vegas, journalists, bloggers and forum posters should be left to predict whom they think will win the most games, but the whole concept of a preseason ranking is silly.

or...

Agreed, though I would prefer a study where you gather 100 college level sprinters to each run three heats with something like 30 mins in between on both a top modern surface and then the same routine the following day in the exact same conditions on old fashioned surfaces with old fashioned equipment. Half run Day 1 on modern and Day 2 on old fashioned, the other half the opposite.

Would be a cool experiment. Discovery channel?

Agreed

Needs more hookers and porn stars, imo. We'll see this weekend if he's upped his intake.

I will

I'm an expert. I have a 10 year old:

It means something inside your knee is hurt, and it will take time to get better.

For understanding more about the meniscus tear, I can recommend this wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tear_of_meniscus

I'm in no way an expert on medical issues, but from this article, it sounds like his season will be in jeopardy and if serious, his career as well, due to risk of reinjury. Here's hoping he will make a speedy recovery (but be shut down by the Blake Countesses and Terry Richardsons of this world when he plays us, obv).

Highlights from wikipedia:

If the destroyed part of the meniscus was removed, patients can usually start walking using a crutch a day or two after surgery. Although each case is different, patients return to their normal activities on average after a few weeks (2 or 3). Still, completely normal walk will resume gradually and it's not unusual to take 2–3 months for the recovery to reach a level where a patient will walk totally smoothly. Many meniscectomy patients don't ever feel a 100% functional recovery, but even years after the procedure they sometimes feel tugging or tension in a part of their knee. There is little medical follow-up after meniscectomy and official medical documentation tends to ignore the imperfections and side-effects of this procedure.

If the meniscus was repaired the rehabilitation program that follows is a lot more intensive. After the surgery a hinged knee brace is sometimes placed on the patient. This brace allows controlled movement of the knee. The patient is encouraged to walk using crutches from the first day, and most of the times can put partial weight on the knee.

The time course varies with each patient. Starting from the second month the patient maybe able to walk freely and can also do various "low-impact" exercises (static bicycle, swimming, etc.), but should expect the knee to feel stiff and sore. If the rehabilitation was done properly the patient can gradually return back to "high-impact" activities (like running). However, "heavier activities", like running, skiing, basketball etc., generally any activities where knees bear sudden changes of the direction of movement can lead to repeated injuries. When planning sport activities it makes sense to consult a physical therapist and check how much impact the sport will have on the knee.

CSB!

...and an excellent gif.

Outstanding thread.

Great stuff, sir!

You differ from what I perceive as the closest one can approximate to be the common expectation regarding redshirts on a few players. Here's where your predictions differ from what I had expected for 2012 recruits (based only on others' opinions):

Drake Johnson (I expected RS)

Jehu Chesson (I expected RS)

Terry Richardson (I expected RS - more because of depth chart than ability and position)

Chris Wormley (I expected RS - though here I don't see why you would go with what the numbers are telling you, especially with Strobel being the higher rated recruit)

On the flip side, I guess I expected that maybe a James Ross, who is advanced technically, but more limited physically, would be a candidate for early PT over the other LBs, but hopefully we can afford to give him a RS to let him develop.

Why?

I appreciate your evaluations, too. Given that game film is often a little bit outdated (if a prospect has worked on his technique in camps through the off-season), when someone like Dawson shows excellent hand- and footwork technique during camps I would think this gives cause for increased optimism, no?

I'm asking, not challenging here. I would expect that a camp performance, going up against top class opposition working on pretty pure technique, would give an excellent indication of relative potential. Sure, if the player is undersized and is just confirming what you see on film, then you can't overstate it, but someone like Dawson, who was supposed to be slightly under-athletic (if that's a word) proving he can outmove and outmaneuvre top defensive linemen, then I'm certanly getting more excited about him as a starting guard.

Thank you for posting a photo Thank you for posting a photo of your hot dog. The text in your post indicated that the photo would provide evidence of a far more unpleasant part of your story.
I infer from your avatar that I infer from your avatar that you're a fellow wolverine/wolves-fan. Not many of us out there with that combo, I suspect.
Well played, sir. Well played, sir.
Grantland?

This smells like a defection to somewhere else (Grantland?) for me. He would obviously not be able to write about it in his farewell post, but it seems unlikely that such a popular voice would be asked to leave. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.

There you go

There you go again.

....letting the truth get in the way of a good story.

I share your optimism, but

I share your optimism, but this squad, while not supremely talented, is a very well composed basketball team. For me, they're a joy to watch, to an extent that very few Michigan teams the last 20 years have been. There are 5 very likeable starters, one solid, though inconsistent bench player + another who can make a few timely threes (and a couple of hard working bigs). The hard work this squad puts in game after game, rarely disappointing and managing to pull though in several close contests, I don't see how you can not enjoy this season.

I think we have a very legit shot at a deep tourney run this year, though it's going to take a hot Tim Hardaway to do it. He's our key down the stretch, if he and Burke can create a bit more for each other and not just for themselves and others, I think we can beat just about anybody.

Haha

"U sad bro?"

A bit harsh. Kid made a great play. Could've been called wrong and he might've been the big hero.

I'm dreaming of a Weis

I'm dreaming of a Weis Crist-mas....

Not splintered on the future

I think you're right in commenting that the fan base is unified regarding Hoke and the future. We loves us some epic double points and 10-2 seasons which were only a couple of plays away from being even better (4th and 1 play action fail + botched PI in the end zone).

I think the fan base is also fairly unified regarding Rodriguez' firing. I think most or all of us felt that the firing was at least justifiable, and at worst a year too late.

Where the fan base is divided is regarding the parameters that were in place for Rodriguez to succeed, which is partly what Bacon's book discusses. I think we can easily agree that when Hoke got the money to attract Mattison, his opportunity for success was improved over an alternate universe where he had to hand the reigns over to a lesser DC. Contrast that with the contract Rodriguez could offer Jeff Casteel according to Bacon, and it's fair to say that his opportunities were restricted.

Rodriguez failed as the HC at Michigan. He may have succeeded with a better opportunity to hire top notch coordinators and coaches on the defense, but he may still have failed. The complaint some of us have of the administration at the time is that the HC at Michigan should be afforded the trust and given every opportunity to succeed, and not be restricted to hiring second rate coordinators.

Others (most fans) either feel that Rodriguez had all the support he deserved/needed and failed, or that he should be good enough to succeed regardless of the framework in which he operates.

I watched the game and I

I watched the game and I picked up on this factoid.

It was not surprising that the announcers had struggled to prepare much on the Michigan team. It seemed as if they had been very busy during their time in Hawaii. Poor guys, it must be a nightmare being assigned to games so far away from home.

It is

One strange thing is no one has commented on the link to the kid's facebook page. I thought that was a no-no? Or is that just links to other users' facebook?

No, the odds would not be low

If you could freeze time at the moment it became clear Coker was going to cut back into a blocked Demens a yard from the first down, what kind of odds would you get on a stop? I submit the odds would be very low.

No. They would be high. Low probability = high odds.

Pet peeve.

DJ

Gamble on a track star - analogy seems relevant to me, regardless of Williamson being a failed gamble.

Seconded ...even though it will hurt our averages.
YAP?

Surely it should be YAPL or YAPHG (Lands or Hits Ground). YAP sounds like yards you gain after you have punted - as in "there was a penalty/muff that allowed the drive to continue and we're measuring how many yards we gained after that". PAP might be relevant in some games.

I like the stat, hate the name.

Do you know something

Do you know something we don't about his medical redshirt status?

I hope you're wrong.

Hate to break it to you, but

Neither your friend's nor your pledge is likely to work in our favor in the competition to land this 18yo basketball player.

I just felt you needed to know this. As much as I admire your dedication.
