he is an ivy league shooter. What makes you think that an ivy league shooter can plausbily defend big ten 2's? He has better chance of defending a dissertation than a big ten 2.
Spike is a GREAT, not good shooter off the ball. He is a TREMENDOUS shooter off the ball. That would be a great role for him. If he's out there with walton or spike, that guy could guard the 2.
Mullins is just a shooter TM. There has never been more of just a shooter TM than this guy. Spike does a lot more. And he has GRIT. and he's our captain. Spike. Spike. Spike.
the year after, he stuggled mightily. 2 years after, he had a career year. Mullins is a huge risk to not be able to be any good at all in major college basketball.
It would be unprecedented for a 5th year senior, 2 years removed from hip surgery, to transfer from michigan to indiana and have the best year of his career. I can't imagine such a thing happening at a school like Michigan. Get real.
with bielfedlt. If you give him doyle's minutes we might win a couple more games, and who knows what woudl have happened in the tourney. It would not have harmed us this season one bit. Donnal and Wagner would still be on the team with significant playing experience. Doyle would still be gone.
All of these excuses for tanking the roster make no sense. You should have the best roster to win now, with the best players you can get. If players don't want to earn their minutes they shouldn't be here.
(1) mullins' numbers are in the ivy league. the ivy league.
(2) spike can give us better minutes at the 2 position than mullins can. we have a bunch of guys who can play the 2: walton, simpson, MAAR, Watson, Irvin, Robinson. Most of those guys plus chatman can play the 3. We have no shortage of options there
(3) We only have 2 point guards - you can count MAAR but he really struggled there. The PG depth chart is terrifying if we lose one of those 2 guys. Every other position can survie an injury.
(4) I'm not assuming spike's hips will be 100 percent, but the idea that you can "assume" any player is going to be healthy and available and prodcutive is an illusion. Mullins could blow his knee out. He could be totally out of his depth. He could miss new york and cry every day. If consider our needs and the risk/reward Spike is by far the better option.
I said it was a bad idea to let an experienced player go for no reason. Most people were like, NAH, SHUT UP IT'LL BE FINE.
It was not fine. He was the big ten 6th man of the year, playing both the 5 and the 4, and we struggled at the 5 and struggled with big man play in general.
Now I'm saying it is a bad idea to let an experienced player go for no reason. Most people are like NAH, SHUT UP IT'LL BE FINE.
It probably won't be fine. He'll most likely end up providing quality minutes for a conference rival. We'll be ok in the backcourt only if all 3 of walton, simpson and MAAR are healthy all season. Odds of that - not great.
Mullins cannot play point guard. He is an ivy league shooter. And he is not as good of a shooter as spike. this makes no sense.
That is nearly identical to the exact same bad decision Beilein made last year, which I complained about at the time and was proven right about.
Yes, we need more athleticism and defense over the long term, but we are talking about one player for one year. Spike will be a 5th year, 24 year old player. He is our captain. He can help us a lot.
any player carries risk. I don't know exactly how good spike will be but I also have no confidence that one of the better players on the worst program in the ivy league is going to help us.
I don't really care how big they are. You can do perfectly fine without a "power forward" sized 4, especially with this offense. We should be continuing to playing 4 out, 1 in. The problem is our players don't play tough and they don't play defense. For whatever reason, I don't think Beilein instills toughness and defensive concepts well in his players, so I think we need guys who have that mentality coming in.
which we can't get into here. My point is just that it's working for zingermann's, and nobody is forcing anyone to eat there. The mouth breathing rage directed at that establishment really baffles me.
with less premium ingredients prepared by staff making minimum wage with no benefits, you have numerous options. Nobody is forcing you to go to Zingermanns. It seems to be pretty clearly not "absurdity" to do what they're doing, given that their business is very successful both for the owners and the staff.
but you are paying for things you don't pay for when you get sandwiches other places - better ingredients and higher salaries/benefits. Obviously you can get a good sandwich for less money, but that's how they do things and it seems to work for them.
The first paragraph is just a bunch of cherry picked stats to make beilein look as good as possible. The recruiting window starts at the nadir of michigan basketball and ignores all the excellent recruiting before that. It's fine to make that case, but presenting this as "just the facts" is ridiculous.
That is exactly the kind of innovation this team needs. It is what Harbaugh would do. Do it. Beilein has some strengths, but when it comes to defense, his approach is a total failure. It needs to be gutted, full stop. Nothing good about it, whatsoever. Defensive coordinator is exactly what we need.
probably our best assistant. Well, we already have guards locked up for the next 2 classes (hopefully) and this is a chance to improve defense at least.
Milwaukee is a decent job but given that Valpo was available and he almost got butler last year, I thought Vall might do better. Hopefully he has the chops to be our next HC down the road
Spike woudl play at the 1 and the 2. If you add a "stretch 4" Irvin is still going to play the 4 at times. My point is you have lots of bodies you can throw in at the 2-5 positions. You only have 3 guys you can use at the 1, and one of them has not worked out well at all there (MAAR). So, to protect against injury, the 1 is what you need to shore up the most.
Your position breakdown is reasonable, but I don't think it's so important in figuring out who we need to add.
Here is who can actually play each position if need be, players ordered in terms of small to big. The thinnest group is the 1. Even the third string guy there, MAAR, is not very good, as evidenced by the fact that Beilein chose to play dakich there for big stretches.
1 Walton Simpson MAAR
2 Walton Simpson MAAR Watson Irvin
3 MAAR Watson Irvin Robinson Chatman
4 Irvin Robinson Chatman Wilson
5 Wilson Wagner Donnal Davis Teske
If you look at our biggest need if you cross the starter off the depth chart at each spot, it's the 1:
1 Simpson MAAR
2 Walton SimpsonWatson Irvin
3 MAAR Watson Irvin Chatman
4 Robinson Chatman Wilson
5 Wilson Donnal Davis Teske
So, bringing back spike makes a lot of sense from a position-coverage standpoint, not to mention everything else he brings to the table.
i see nobody out there who is. certainly not some guy who plays at COLUMBIA, which is arguably the biggest joke of an athletic program in all of division one
against purdue. He hurt his foot and was lost for the season. They cleared mitch to play with a back, lost for the season. They cleared walton to play on a bad foot, lost for the season. Don't care what they say at all. Don't trust them at all.
unfortunately their roster management has proven, time and time again, to be not trustworthy, most recently with the very similar max bielfeldt situation. but by all means, don't draw any conclusions.
He just can't play very well right now, and it hurts him to do it. In 7 months, in my opinion, there is a more than 50% chance he will be helluva lot better than some ivy league rando.
But he has to be a 4 this year. Otherwise we are going to have 5 centers on the team. And, even though he's 6'9'' or 6' 10'', he really does not play like a center. It is not goign to work to have him there. If he's going to be successul on this team it will be out on the wing.

fine.
let's just sign shakira then
That is the best thing I have to say about him.
HE WOULD KILL EVERYONE IN THAT GARBAGE LEAGUE

if we get mullins, I will *hope* he is great, but the odds are we'll get more out of keeping spike.
wagner was originally supposed to redshirt - bielfedlt had nothing to do with it.

really got into the details there.

then he said he was going to unretire. So now, he is not retired. Now, he is rehabbing his hips. It's not very complicated.

You are a very mean and combative person.

and indiana and purdue do as well. Why do you think he isn't healthy enough?

we already have wilson (and had dawkins) on the roster.
He seems like a fine prospect but under JB's system will probably just be another strecth 4 flameout - we've had our share .
Y'ALL STUPID
Wear your armor at night, LaVall
how long will the thread survive given its title? mmm... 23 minutes?

please do this! Unless there is a really good option at the wing, this is by far the best move. We need another guard and we need spike.
is anyone considering the laser hitting you in the dong concern, to me that is the biggest concern
would we all have to wear cups. just too many questions

It will hurt our chances all year, because ESPN will pimp it out, even though it is obviously stupid.

4-7 Five star players and 15-19 4 star players. Is that realistic? I don't think so.
Beilein says he'd like to get another high-major non-conference opponent for this fall. Doesn't want RPI to hurt team's chances.
with red shirts you are talking about up to 125 scholarship athletes per roster.
but that would be very bad for you
i love you raoul i love you sam webb i love you beilein maybe
