So I'm a bit confused because I thought I had read right here on MGoBlog (perhaps in one of Brian's Searchbits posts) that Hackett was very reluctant to even take the interim AD job? And that he was content in his retirement and definitely didn't want the permanent position but was just filling in because he is a huge Michigan supporter and former player with fairly good leadership experience?
Since then, I haven't heard anything along these lines and it seems more and more like his term is getting longer. Just wondering if anyone had a perspective on this - doesn't seem like these two positions really reconcile. Did he simply change his mind and decide he likes being AD?

To be honest, I don't really love Two Hearted. I'm a huge Bells fan (and general small brewery / craft beer fan), but I don't think Two Hearted really differentiates itself significantly from many other pale ales out there. Don't get me wrong, it's great, but not something I'd go out of my way for. The Michigan ties and the good times I had while drinking it obviously make a difference, but it's not enough to make it outstanding.
Now Bell's Hopslam is a ridiculously distinctive and noteworthy beer that is much harder to find outside of Michigan (I live in NYC and have seen a few times, but nowhere near how much Two Hearted is distributed). The stories I could tell about getting hammered on the deliciously enjoyable beer...

This is kind of a weird point to me. I have no reason to doubt what you are saying (empirically it seems true), but who cares? I am a fan of Michigan football and so long as a coach can help the Michigan Wolverines be successful, I honestly don't care if the players he develops are amazing in the NFL or not. Would it be nice? Of course. Is it a priority / does it really matter to me? Nope.
I'd be pretty happy with a Tebow, with a Prescott, or with a Gardner being used correctly.

I'm assuming no one has heard any news with Bosch since he took his leave of absence with the team? Just making sure I didn't miss anything, although I read the blog pretty religiously.

Sorry, I did miss it. Honest mistake. I actually read the boards religiously but probably just skimmed over it and forgot.

Although I don't post much, I read 100% of content on this site. ST3, I sincerely hope this is your RS Junior year and you are back for more!

Not to pick on you too much, OP, but your post is a classic example of picking out an outlier to make an untrue assertion. Sure, it worked for Michigan THAT YEAR, but that doesn't mean that you can use 1997 as a predictor for 2013 or any other year since of course the actual trend is for teams which are younger overall not to do as well.

Thanks for this update, I for one really enjoy hearing about all Michigan sports and would love to get regular info beyond football and basketball (which are obviously great).

Maybe they should call Tim Beckman... He seemed ready for the big leagues. Oh wait, 2012 just happened...

It's an easily debatable decision, but I wouldn't say it's inexcusable by any means. Brian, the Mathlete, and others have been advocates of going for it on fourth down. I would love to see what the math says in this situation. We had been moving the ball pretty well on that particular drive as well.
People talk about the impact of not making it and all the downsides, but they don't focus enough on the upside. Say we make it and really crush the spirit of the Buckeye defense, get momentum, etc. There is such thing as generating positive momentum, not simply losing momentum. There was a great Smart Football article about this.
|2 years 3 days ago||Excellent post OP. However,||
Excellent post OP.
However, I disagree on the 4th down play. I watched it over and over (sickeningly) on the game highlights at MGoVideo and Denard had already been engaged by a Buckeye defender. Lewan does whiff his block completely, you are right, but it's unlikely that Denard would have gotten 3 more yards while being slowed by a defender allowing Buckeye help to get to him.
While this wasn't a straight up the middle play, it also wasn't attacking the edge which we did earlier extremely effectively.
I'm still not sure why we don't just have Gardner rollout with a run-pass option. That seems like our best play threatening the defense in multiple spots.

I wouldn't say it's commonly available. Here in NYC I believe only Time Warner and a few other providers carry it. I have RCN and I can't get Big Ten Network, so have to stream or watch games at other peoples' places.
If they added some more East Coast schools, I'm assuming the other cable carriers will pick up BTN as well.

I think recruiting rankings can't really properly evaluate something that is key to how a player pans out: individual work ethic.
Just like instinct, some players just have it and others don't. This is the reason someone like a 2-star J.J. Watt can come in to Wisconsin at like 230 lbs and then turn into an NFL draft pick.
I just don't think there is any way to reliably predict work ethic, as you don't know how all the players will react to their adjustments in college, the status they get, the distractions, etc.

I'm not disputing any of the facts that you state. They are are true and good. My point is that a Big Ten team, if the Big Ten is really to claim a spot as one of the nation's foremost conferences, should never struggle with any of htese teams that you have metnioned. I'm not saying you shouldn't schedule these teams or anything... just when you do you should annhillate them.
Credit to the FCS when it is due... THe other side is that the Big Ten should be doing better.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||I mean, I have nothing but||
I mean, I have nothing but fondness for Northern Iowa... I've been to some games there and I have run multiple track meets in the Unidome. They recruit the best talent they can get (top Iowa talent mixed with some elsewhere, they have a great track program), but they should never even come close to the talent level of a Big Ten team.
Basically you are making my point... There is no reason for any defending conference champ to lose to a better than average FCS team. There is also no reason for any team in the Big Ten to lose to a team that is in a whole division lower than itself. It's like another App. State...
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Found a way to win? Against||
Found a way to win? Against competition that is barely a level above FCS?
I would hope that the Big Ten would be doing more than "finding a way to win" vs. Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa... Those teams should not be in the same sentence as any Big Ten team. I know for a fact that Northern Iowa cannot come anywhere near the talent level of any Big Ten school, since I used to live in Cedar Falls.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||They have defenses that may||
They have defenses that may be statistically as good as Bama's. This does not account for the fact that Bama has a much stronger strength of schedule than either of those teams. We will be able to move the ball much easier against either of those defenses- key word being easier relatively and not necessarily easy overall.

|2 years 13 weeks ago||To the above posts, it's not||
To the above posts, it's not really like there is a massive talent gap though. The announcers mentioned that Gilman essentially has a potential D1 prospect playing every position (probably exaggeration). I don't think the problem is that they are compeltely phsyically outclassed; it's more that they are just playing very soft.
For what its worth, the games that have been ranked vs. ranked have also been fairly lopsided, as far as I've seen.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||To the earlier poster's||
To the earlier poster's point, this is looking like another one of those lopsided high school games on ESPN 3. The only game I've watched that wasn't really one sided was the Joliet Catholic vs. Providence Catholic one.
Man, Gilman just looks lethargic as hell, like they don't even want to be there. That many penalties is inexcusable. They are playing like shit, but it seems that they have a lot of the phsyical ability to play with Moeller. They have just been killing themselves.

Surprisingly balanced offence from Hermitage, lots of passing. You would think with Green they would be a pounding offense but lots of throws and QB runs.
