I grew up in Cleveland, and sat in the student section with my OSU friends in my Michigan gear in 2006. Here's a list of things that happened to me during the game:
I also sat in the student section for the 2008 game, when none of these things happened.
Although I wore my Michigan gear during the game, I wore a black coat over all of my gear outside the stadium before the game. Where it can get really out of control is outside the stadium, where ushers (who in my several experiences down there, have always been friendly and gone out of their way to make sure I could come to them with any issues) are not present.
Based on my experience, the inside experience should not be something you're worried about. Just be careful outside the stadium. And no, no one will ostrasize the ticket seller because you're a Michigan fan.

It is a well known secret amongst many that the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program (at least it was around 10 years ago when I matriculated) was the backdoor to guaranteeing central campus. Two classes in the dorm (freshman comp in the fall, an arts/writing class in the spring) and your commitment is over. And at least in that program, the overwhelming number of participants were in it for the same reasons your son would likely be for it.
He should reconsider MLCs and their commitments. Not even necessarily from an academic perspective, but from a pure housing situation.

I also view my student loans as an investment. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am today and I'm thankful that that opportunity was available to me, but just as I view student loans as an investment in myself, society at large can view subsidized education as an investment in an educated population, which will reap benefits for the economy as a whole. People shouldn't believe that their loans should go away because they are entitled to it (with exceptions of course, such as fradulent recruiting tactics), but if the entire country is better off in the long run wiping the slate clean and moving forward, then its something to consider.
|1 year 12 weeks ago||But federal student loan||
But federal student loan rates aren't adjusted for the cost of borrowing: for grad school, they are 5.5% for stafford loans and 6.8% for plus loans. Agree that this could be handed better, but allow me to present a parallel:
Getting admitted to college occurs before senior year final grades are in. Colleges can (and will) recind offers of admission if grades are not kept up. Rescissions often occur after a student has turned down all other offers of admission.
My point is, the staff should evaluate recruits on their entire body of work, and continue to evaluate them until NSD. If they do not like what they see, and give advance warning that their offer is in jeopardy (like what seems to be done in this case but could have been done better), then I have no problem offering scholarships and rescinding them on a limited basis.

As an alternative tailgate experience, I'd recommend doing some of the breweries in northeast minneapolis. You can walk between them, and they all have food trucks parked on site for food. Once you're ready to head towards TCF, an uber wouldn't be more than $10.

|2 years 9 weeks ago||The only point I really see||
The only point I really see to her article is one that I think resonates with many: the term "middle class' no longer truly refers to a specific class of people, but moreso a set of ideals and worldview.
Political and economic discussions in the US don't revolve around the poor or rich (at least primarily): they revolve around the "middle class" and "small business owner". We want to be viewed as self-supporting and hard working, but not out-of-touch and above others.
it doesn't surprise me at all that the author referred to herself as middle class. Growing up in a household that made a similar claim, which I now find to be absurd (moreso than the author's claim), walking around and claiming that we were "rich" would have made us outliers. Claiming to be a member of the middle class makes you a part of the collective and resonates with other people who want to be viewed similarly.
My point is is that when we're talking about economic class, we might as well throw away the term "middle class". Because having groups of very poor, "middle", and very rich tells us very little about how our society functions.

I've don't understand the idea of having a minimum wage be less than a livable wage. While there are circumstances where the following is not true, we're essentially saying that its ok to pay people less than what it takes for people to live on. What that number is I don't know, but it seems to me that it's falling short for many people.
|2 years 11 weeks ago||I'd have to imagine there are||
I'd have to imagine there are a large number of people working somewhere in between minimum wage and 12 an hour. Per the 2010 census, 19% of US households had an income of less than $25k. And on average, 2 people live in those households.

I don't really get what you're gettimg at here. Maybe this guy could be doing some things different (but based on what we know I have no idea what they would be) but how does that refute the following:
1. The transportation situation, as it stands right now in Detroit, is atrocious.
|2 years 11 weeks ago||The occassional ride from a||
The occassional ride from a coworker on a random day of the week is not an option for a reasonable commute. Having a shift job requires you to have some form of routine, and I don't see how accepting a lift 2 days a week alleviates his problems.
I agree that we don't have all of his family details (other than that he lives with his girlfriend), and that assuming he doesn't support others, his income is about twice the poverty rate. But it doesn't change the fact that he can't afford to buy, maintain, and insure a car, and that no real alternatives to a car exist. His commute is an undue hardship upon him. And based on having one of those, its clear that salary is an issue in this case. Otherwise it seems to me he'd own a car and drive 30 minutes each way.
Again, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt in that he doesn't live beyond his means (and based on the fact that he works or commutes 20 hours a day, I'd highly doubt he does). And if this is the case, there's no way that this is not a salary issue.
|2 years 11 weeks ago||It's hard to look at this||
It's hard to look at this man's story as true and say that all employers pay a decent wage. To me, a decent wage means being able to afford life's necessities and a measured amount of leisure expenses, including the cost or a reasonable commute. I don't think anyone here thinks that covering 20 miles in 4-6 hours is a reasonable commute.
In regards to the transit discussion above, has any research been done into providing some sort of auto insurance or car purchase tax credit? With the infrastructure in detroit so low to begin with, an income measured tax credit, similar to that for property tax in many states, may be a way to kickstart transportation solutions. I have no idea what this would cost compared to alternatives, but seeing that mass transit requires a large, comprehensive network to function properly, it could be an attractive option to get moving faster.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Agree with you in hindsight||
Agree with you in hindsight that LSA to MAcc would have made more sense, and that moves could have been made that were more financially reasonable. My interest was largely in finding a corporate finance role entering Ross, and eventually going back for an MBA. I-Banking hours were too much for me and I never really had a strong interest in consulting. And then the recession hit and corporate finance jobs largely disappeared, even at Ross. I landed on my feet at a big 4 internship in tax, which meant a full time offer was waiting for me on the condition that I complete the MAcc (Ross doesn't even offer enough undergrad accounting classes to be licensed as a CPA). I now work in international tax and really enjoy what I do. Furthermore, I was able to transfer to another office when my fiancée was admitted to a PhD program, flexibility I wouldn't have necessarily had in I banking or consulting.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||I'm a ross undergrad and MAcc||
I'm a ross undergrad and MAcc alum, and from what I recall the master in accounting program has an 80-90% big 4 placement rate. And that despite the fact that Ross doesn't have an undergraduate accounting program.
I can't speak to Northwestern or ND as I didn't go there, but Michigan has an excellent program in nearly everything, and on cost/prestige alone, it would be hard to pass up in state, with the exception of certain programs specifically (ie Journalism). I will say that from an alumni relations/connections standpoint, ND is equally as strong and would not discard it on those merits alone.

Considering this trend is across the board and not just limited to Michigan, I can't agree more with this statement. I'm a 2010/2011 grad who sat thru the entire 2008 Northwestern game, but I know I'm in the minority.
For many if not most students, the tailgate is the event. And the game, if you make it, is often simply coming down either in blazing heat or wind and rain on metal bleachers, often while sitting in the 80th row. And while not showing up makes no sense to me, I respect that 40,000 other students may not share my opinion, and have a hard time believing that 20,000 are as passionate as I am.
What is the solution if you really want to increase overall attendance? We have enough demand for tickets (as long as the opponent is not Akron). A basketball-style system of claim periods in a capped student section might make things better. The students who really want to go will claim, while those who don't may not for fear of losing their ability to claim for the rest of the season. Will the students hate it? Yes. But I have a hard time believing that whatever system is created they will be happy.

I still think we will be a 3, we'll likely end up in Auburn Hills.
But isn't it nice to not have to worry about bubble stuff for the second consecutive year? As a basketball fan who really came of watching age from the late 90s forward, I'm just appreciative that I'm not a total nervous wreck right now.

1. McGary is not yet ready to log a whole game. He looked exhausted at times and the D suffered. We need Morgan back soon to keep the rotation fresh.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||The court would be at about||
The court would be at about desk level...the people sitting next to the court had their chairs on the floor, like those in the first row, so probably about 3 feet.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||I was in attendance tonight||
The refs called way too much and slowed the second half down. But its great to see that this team doesn't have to fire on all cylinders to get a good win. As long as a couple of people step up each night this team is going to dominate offensively.
McGary continues to impress. I can't wait to see him continue to develop over the next few years.
Finally, the barn is awesome. It's a little cramped, and incredibly loud. The fact that we keep winning there is amazing because it is a really tough place to play.

I know the weekly program is 30 mins, maybe some sort of contractual requirement regarding that.
Question: Does anyone know who the last unranked team to play in the Rose Bowl was? I have no clue.
|4 years 20 weeks ago||Except it won't||
In the new system, the highest ranked conference champion of the Big East, MWC, CUSA, Sun Belt, and MAC get an auto-bid to one of the six bowls.
The only thing that would have changed is that two other teams would have been included. Someone still would have had to played NIU
|4 years 20 weeks ago||Exactly||
At least with the old formula the BCS relied on the computers first and the coaches second. What could James Franklin possibly know about Utah State football mid-season?

Enough with the neutral site BS. Team with the highest record gets to host with a higher than usual number of guaranteed seats for the visitor (say 10,000). The number of empty seats in that building is outrageous.
And why would you have the big ten title game in the place in your conference that cares about football least?

I'm assuming the OP doesn't want to cause a ruckus though. He would just want to wear a Michigan sweater and cheer the same as any other fan would.
As long as he were a polite guest I would see no problem.
|4 years 22 weeks ago||The right decision was made.||
The right decision was made. By going, any slip up could land your wife in trouble. There's no need to take that kind of risk.
How ohio to have this kind of stipulation though. Your purchase of tickets, parking, and concessions still flows through to the school and increases their bottom line. If you invited a guest who happened to be a fan of a rival school to attend a Michigan home game, would you ever force them to be quiet and wear either neutral or Michigan gear? I would never.

|4 years 22 weeks ago||Now that they are on equal footing with the Big East||
Why should they go? Big East football is now going to be temple and conference USA circa 2002. Why spend on the extra travel costs to play those teams?
This is the smart move.

We already only play Wisconsin and Penn St. 2 out of every 5 years. Why should we give up more of these games for Maryland, GT, and Rutgers?
Essentially, this ends the B1G as a conference: it's two conferences with a common championship game.

|4 years 23 weeks ago||The reason we added more||
The reason we added more student seats was because we had more applications than available seats in the student section. So students were being placed in other areas of the stadium with available seats. Often, freshmen who did not go to M knowing anyone were being placed alone in odd corners of the stadium, deprived of their student section experience. My sophomore year was spent sneaking my freshman girlfriend into the student sections since her seat was alone in section 38.
I'd rather have empty seats at the top of the student section than to go back to that.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Part of the "C" problem is where you are sitting||
I can hear the C pretty well in section 3. Its the A I can't hear.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Notre Dame is a much smaller||
Notre Dame is a much smaller school where nearly all students live in Dorms, and greek life is non-existant. The campus culture is so different that it is not comparable.
Besides, ND offers a capped number of student tickets not only to ND students, but also to those at St. Mary's and Holy Cross. So there's that to consider.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Am I happy that the students||
Am I happy that the students don't always fill in before kickoff? No. But this is not a unique Michigan problem. Plenty of other schools have this issue: see Florida today.
But taking away tickets is not the answer. At the end of the day, the school is run for the students, and as long as there is sufficient space for student tickets, they should be available to every student regardless of attendance records.
Should we give the best seats to people who show up? Of course. The current system of assigned seating based on credit hours makes little sense.
And finally, the students did fill in today. When the team needed the stadium loud, it was.

|4 years 30 weeks ago||The defense was spectacular.||
The defense was spectacular. To hold ND to 13 points and 240 yards on the short fields they had all night was incredible.
But simply put, Denard blew this one. A senior quarterback can not make those throws. It was a serious regression on his part. It pains me to put this one on him, but it is deserved.
Do I hate denard/want him pulled? No. He's still our best playmaker and has earned his role as the leader of his team, and has bailed us out many times before. But I am ready for Denard to graduate and for Shane Morris to come in and take over the position.
Finally, the B1G is super weak this year. We can still win the conference and get to the Rose Bowl, in which case, all from this game would be forgiven.
