That said, good on Wellman for encouraging everybody to hang out with each other.
|1 day 8 hours ago||I don't understand how Hoke can be in the hot seat||
For many reasons:
1) Mattison and Nuss are awesome coordinators
2)Hoke recruits well
3) Hoke presents Michigan the way that the we want him to
4) He's Lloyd (and therefore Bo) approved and backed
5) Former players love him (Tom Brady came back to campus to speak to the players)
6) Aside from Harbaugh (pipe dream), who would replace Hoke that is a significant upgrade? If you present such a man, who would the coordinators be?

They are different, but your examples are not a fair comparison.
Steroids are against the NFL rules because of an unfair competitive advantage and bumping an official/ purposefully injuring an opponent happens on the field of play.
The video (of his alleged uppercut) was never released to the press. I think we both agree that Ray Rice is a sack of sh*t, but the NFL (or any league) should not be able to suspend players (and deprive them of income) when the police don't charge the player, especially for cases where the offense is routinely charged. It's the only neutral way to handle things.
I understand why the NFL suspended him (for PR and to not have protests at games), but that's not a good enough opinion, IMO.
|6 days 7 hours ago||I'll never go.||
Damn Dave Brandon and his sleezy marketing tricks. He'll probably charge $5 for a hot dog. A. Hot. Dog.

|6 days 7 hours ago||Was he convicted of anything?||
Apparently, the woman married him, but was he convicted? My stance is and will always be that conviction or an admission of guilt (even a no contest plea) should be the minimum before a league suspends anybody. Charges alone mean nothing, especially with corrupt police.

4 and 5*'s are often awarded after a kid has been offered by a big time program. The scouts themselves have no clue. They rely on guys like Saban, Meyer... To offer kids and then re-rank guys based on that (although they never say this).
|1 week 5 days ago||That's dumb.||
a kid with offers from Alabama, USC, LSU, Ohio, PSU, Florida, Georgia, etc. would never be anything but a 4 or 5* kid (final rankings). Even if the sites thought the kid were a 2 or maybe a 3* kid, with offers like that, he'd be bumped to 4 or 5*s.
|1 week 5 days ago||No.||
If journalists were actually good at predicting talent, they would be scouts, coaches, or something better than bottom feeders for scout/ rivals/ 247/ espn.
They have no clue and manufacture stories for page views (which apparently we love to give them).
This also explains the sudden bumps kids get when they are offered by big name programs and the ranking sites use offers to base stars on, so that at the end of the day, they look like they have a clue.

|2 weeks 6 days ago||Great point||
I think you are correct. The number of scholarships and then the number of non graduating non revenue sport athletes is likely so low that it doesn't add much cost, especially on an incremental basis.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||I think money is a big deal,||
I'm not sure if Brian's point that any idiot would have gotten the same money since the B1G and expansion was a league issue is correct (it may be).
Cancelling the ND game was not his idea, but I generally liked the idea of the Jerryworld game (before I realized we were terrible that year). I also like the diverse scheduling, even with RU and MD.
Since we have to compete in non-revenue sports, I like that we have nice facilities and generally competitive teams and I think the athletic campus is amazing.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||fair point,||
as I studied way too much. However, my point is that when the team is bad, there are other things to do (not necessairly pre-game), but watch on TV, hang with friends, or study. When the team is generally assured to win against good competition, the trend is make games a top priority.
If you disagree, just look at Basketball attendance from the mid-90s until like 2010.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Great idea||
But I don't know how you could only do this for football and mens basketball. If colleges do this for all sports it would be too costly for most schools.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||I'll address your gripes. 1)||
I'll address your gripes.
1) Non-revenue sports are important at Universities. Just ask any non D1 school. They bring in smart kids on scholarship and are in the true spirit of college sports. That said, I don't watch them either, but legally, Michigan has to comply with Title 9.
2) What do you want him to say? He's smart for not responding to your emails. You would immediately post them on MGo. Legally, he needs to give a PR response. It's common sense.
3) Students would rather party than see Michigan play shitty teams and (very sadly) maybe even lose to these teams. We are not the powerhouse we were. When students can be assured that Michigan will beat a decent team >75% of the time, then they will come to games and enjoy them. That's sadly not the case.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||He's a good 3-4 years||
from being a starter at Michigan, so that can be corrected for sure. Finally, some damn depth at QB!
|2 weeks 6 days ago||I'm a huge Brandon supporter||
so I guess I'm not a cool kid on MGo.
1) Revenue up is a big deal - hiring Nuss, paying the b-ball coaches, and new facilities are all significant factors in Michigan being where we are today
2) Scheduling is decided years in advance, so we can't blame him
3) RU and MD are solid adds IMO. Both are respectable schools (certainly better than Indiana or Iowa) and bring in an expanding marketplace (huge B1G alumni in both cities). Also, it's join an expanded conference or die. Even ND is basically alligned with the Big East
4) People are only angry because the football team sucks. That's not Brandon's fault. Hoke needs another year or 2 before he should be fired.
|3 weeks 5 hours ago||The poster||
means after Lebron left Cleveland the fans treated him like shit. Some of this is to be expected but 1) they were over the top, and 2) most anybody in Ohio would leave to make a ton of money in South Beach and play with 2 All Stars.

I think Michigan fans bring up the fact that we beat Tebow in the Cap1 Bowl, the same year we lost to ASU as an example of:
1) Beating Urban, even when he had Tebow
2) Lol @ SEC>B1G
Also, that Stanford game (and the fact that Lane Kiffen is an awful coach) is why Stanford > USC is the case today. And I think from a betting line perspective, that was a bigger upset.
|4 weeks 9 hours ago||I'm impressed with ASU's history||
But we will murder them. They are nowhere near as good as 2007 and if anybody thinks current Michigan players won't be motivated, you must believe no players watch ESPN or read anything sports related in the internet. I'm pretty sure Brandon, Lloyd, and Fred Jackson will also remind the team.

I haven't done the research, but thought OTA channels that are available through an antenna don't recieve much, if any money from cable companies. I thought their major revenue source was advertisers. That's why this decision is troubling.
As an aside, the Supreme Court has been bought by corporations, which is probably a positive thing if you are an M grad, but...
|4 weeks 6 days ago||OP,||
Why is this a win for broadcasters? Isn't their goal to be on as many screens as possible, so that their advertisers get more exposure?
This is just another example of the influence of big money on politics.
Also, this is why Brandon is a genius and the B1G expansion is great. It's all about bundled cable services and the BTN! Pay per channel or event will never happen.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||My random guess||

To me, basketball recruiting is the Top X (maybe 100, maybe less) kids who have a very legit possibility of playing in the NBA and everybody else (I don't see a huge difference between 3 and 4* guys). I'm not sure how many top 100 kids Michigan can get in the next cycle, but historically, I think we only have Mitch in that group (he was heavily recruited by Duke). Therefore, I think we have to trust Beilein and believe in his "sorcery" because we aren't out UK-ing UK or Duke or Syracuse.

If you are just looking at the rookie contract then, yeah, get drafted in round 1, make money, quit basketball at the age of 26/27, do something else in life.
But what about guys who improve their game? Doesn't the D-league or maybe Europe offer more development for guys playing full time than college (the exception may be a guy like Beilein, who apparently develops players like a boss).
So, a mid 1st round pick makes $3 million guaranteed (I think) over 2 years and then there are options for a 3rd year. Let's say a guy goes in the mid 2nd round. My guess is he gets maybe $300,000 over 2 years, or a loss of about $2.7 million over 2 years.
My question: Is that "loss" of $2.7 million over 2 years worth less development, practice... that the D-League offers over college? Isn't the real goal to get a good new, non-rookie contract, which can be achieved by staying in school or going pro?
|15 weeks 1 day ago||Even if you aren't guaranteed a 1st round pick,||
isn't it always better to go pro? Surely without going to class and the limits on practice time, a player has more time to improve his game in the D-league over college (assuming D-league coaches are not awful).
|15 weeks 1 day ago||Wait?||
Does Funk report to Hoke, because every coach reports to Hoke and GMat and Nuss have no reports (which is fine and a common org structure) or does Funk specifically report to Hoke, but other offensive coaches (e.g. Fred Jackson) report to Nuss?
|15 weeks 1 day ago||You have no sense of humor||
must. be. sparty/ buckeye
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Irrelevant||
The alleged victim did not persue the matter with the police. Even if she did, why does Hoke dodging a press conference question have any bearing? If Hoke or Brandon or anybody else in the AD interfered with the investigation, then it's a big deal. Gibbons did not play after he was suspended, the university didn't wait an extra week to allow him to play.
We are getting an explanation right now and even without any police involvement, Gibbons is going to be known as a rapist forever. If I were a victim's family, I'd be pissed that the University took so long to investigate and I'd be pissed at Gibbons (maybe Lewan, if you believe the reports) and maybe even Hoke (but not for saying it was about "family issues").
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Would be awesome for AA||
to become a tech hub. However, I think the measuring stick is when established tech companies move to an area and set up shop as opposed to VC money (which is usually for 1-2 man operations).
In Austin, Facebook. Twitter... have recenly opended offices and I think AA needs to attract that type of business (again I hope, maybe I can move back!).
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Who cares?||
Like other posters have more elloquently stated, who cares what Hoke said? Would it really have made you happy if he said "no comment" or didn't say anything?
The minute the University suspended Gibbons, he did not play for Michigan. Hoke/ Brandon and the AD did not cover up anything, they did not hinder the investigation (like @ FSU) and everybody is pissed off that Hoke said "Family Issue" as opposed to "no comment".Big deal.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||What?||
"They just felt that it's a system that's difficult for big men to have success, especially when compared to the guards,"
That's a quote from Jon about why his family wants him to transfer. Did they not notice that Mitch may have been a 1st round pick last season and how well he played in last year's NCAA Tournament? Also, did they not notice JMo develop into a really solid basketball player?
Also, he wants more minutes and like others have said, with JMo gone and Mitch maybe leaving (and even if Mich comes back, he may gett injored and needs a backup anyway) he would get those minutes and be the featured big guy. His departure makes no sense.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||But if the author of the article saw this,||
didn't Hoke or Mattison? All I'm saying is why didn't Hoke/ Mattison say "dude, why are you giving Lewan TE help, when we have 3 other linemen who are young and not very good?"
|15 weeks 5 days ago||Hoke?||
Why didn't Hoke or Mattison say anything when Lewan was helped by a TE? I understand that it's Borges' show, but when he's failing miserably and there are obvious problems, why didn't another coach say something? Why didn't Hoke overrule him?
"you have a tight end helping before he goes out into his route. Lewan, who doesn't need the help any damn way, blocks the hell out of the edge rusher. But the rest of Lewan's buddies on the Michigan O-line aren't quite as, well, good as he is, so the quarterback is under pressure and ends up sacked."
|15 weeks 6 days ago||Did you not get into Michigan?||
Is that why you went to OSU?
|16 weeks 1 day ago||Another note||
How awesome would it e for an all fresmen team to go to the NBA and the HC? It's a dream for Coulter and the NCAA lawsuit.
|16 weeks 1 day ago||Can I get a S A N C T I O N S||
|16 weeks 4 days ago||What I never understood us||
What I never understood us why everybody bases the going pro vs staying in school on draft slot. It should be about 2 scenarios. 1. Go pro and get a high draft slot and hope for the best. 2. Stay in school, become a better player (just look at Nik from 1 year ago) and increase longevity in the nba.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||In theory,||
he's probably spend the winter training for the NFL combine anyway.

|17 weeks 9 hours ago||If you are only in college||
For a year, why even go to class? Your time is much better spent practicing and resting. That's why 1 and done or even 2 and done makes no sense. There is no reason to go to class or care about a degree.
|17 weeks 9 hours ago||I guess home games for his mom||
Would now awkward to attend. Maybe in a few years this will be forgotten by most and nobody will care.
|17 weeks 9 hours ago||What is he rumored||
To have done again? I don't recall any legal troubles.
|17 weeks 1 day ago||Look, he's choosing MSU>||
Look, he's choosing MSU> other good schools. This is not a be a drug dealer or go to Harvard type decision. He's choosing to go to a decent college to play for a highy rated (that makes me sick to type) Rose Bowl winning football team for a highly regarded HC and DC.
On top of this, he's going for free and his mother is holding him hostage because of a technicality.
Even if you disagree with all of theabove, the bottom line and my point is that his mother's big mouth (not her decision or he will) may end up costing her son thousands of dollars. Period. Maybe, it's her judgement that should be suspect (as MM himself has been quiet).
|17 weeks 1 day ago||To be clear,||
I'm saying that his mother's big mouth and stubornness (even if she proves to be correct at the end) could cost her son thousands of dollars in loans.
Even if his mother is "standing by her word" she is still screwing over her son by making him take out loans for something that should be free (and he you know earned in HS). Winning parenting right there, folks.
|17 weeks 1 day ago||Even funnier that his mom||
makes him go into thousands of dollars of debt because she has a big mouth and didn't sign a piece of paper. (By big mouth, I mean she should have kept her negative Sparty comments behind closed doors).
|17 weeks 1 day ago||Michigan Ross Marketing Dept||
What I don't understand is why the AD doesn't use the Marketing Dept at the Business School. It's generally regarded as a top program and I'm sure the BBAs & MBAs would love to do a project to improve the Spring Game experience (and it would basically be free). Make it a 1 credit class with a Marketing Prof and boom.
Same thing for increasing the game experience for students.

besides look at any state that has a dominant althletic school and everbody in the state is a fan. Hell, when Rutgers didn't suck at football, I saw more T-Shirts and bumper stickers than I ever imagined (don't see as much now).
Even the Ohio State people I know are now cheering for Dayton, because they are from the same state (and if the roles were reversed, I'm sure Dayton fans would be cheering for OSU). It's pretty normal.

|18 weeks 2 days ago||Problem||
is that White is famous and made the bet. Regular Joes would never bet ~10K to $20K just to trash talk and be expected to actually follow through.
Also, if White manned up and paid, this stupid story would make him look like a humble guy and would be on the front page of yahoo. All for $10-$20K. Not bad at all.

Is it Michigan (Hoke's) policy to suspend a player for a game & practice before arraginment? I didn't think so. Maybe the issue is that Glasgow has to be <21, so I believe there is zero tollerance while driving.
|18 weeks 5 days ago||This is the point||
Nobody refers to JMo's grittiness or his underwhelminbg recruiting. They occasionally mention his Engineering degree, but if JMo were white, the announcers would drool over him.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||What's interesting,||
is that I think that personality is why he's so successful. Announcers always talk about OLinemen with a mean streak and news about NFL locker rooms from the Jonathan Martin/ Incognito issue also shows the type of personality that successful O linemen have.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||Retaliation!||
Next year, we get some annoying MGo posters to go to the bar in Columbus after the OSU game and annoy players (and ideally coaches) in the hope of getting punched. This will work, win or lose. Common MGo users, take one for the team.

|19 weeks 1 day ago||When this happens, I think it||
When this happens, I think it means that either teams bomb from 3 or have a King James type player who scores a ton, but doesn't play much D.Over the course of the year, making a bunch of 3s is obviously high variation, but averages out.
Just curious, where was last year's Michigan ranked in this?

|19 weeks 6 days ago||2014||
|20 weeks 4 hours ago||I disagree,||
from what I have read, he liked Michigan, but just liked State better and liked their coaches a bit more. How many alumni attended Michigan as their safety school or started at Michigan with the goal of transferring to Harvard or Stanford? I bet you most of those people graduated from Michigan and loved it.
