We will never forget when he ran down Ringer from behind...

1 week 2 days ago 6'3"

The consensus has him at about 6'3" which is fine for a SAM... and he could still grow some.

Odd that Rivals shows his Nebraska interest as "Low",  while 24/7 predicts that he will wind up a 'Husker.  That will all change when he gets his Michigan offer.....

1 week 3 days ago Ferns is an ILB

Ferns seems much better suited to the inside, and it seems he was recruited to play there.  I agree that he has some length and speed so could play SLB, but most scouts see him as a prototypical MLB/WLB... with emphasis on the MIKE.

EDIT- meant this as a reply to EGD who sees Fernes as a SLB.

1 week 4 days ago Jimmie Swain

Thanks for the heads up on Swain...  first I'd heard of him.   He looks good and with the physical tools to play either inside or outside.

1 week 4 days ago I think we take three

We are definitley after a SAM prospect (Winovich or similar), and likely will take another inside guy now that Ringer is gone.  It looked like that might be Watson, but we cooled on him... probably due to a meh camp performance where he measured only 5'10".

1 week 5 days ago Gardner's Redshirt

You are way too informed to really believe that DG's redshirt was for an "injury".He was slated for a redshirt but then everyone was  up in arms that RR had wasted it. Then came his "back injury" after Tate came out of the doghouse...  and methinks that 's why it took so long to get the extra eligibility confirmed.

1 week 5 days ago " I completely agree with you

" I completely agree with you about redshirts, for any position. 5th year guys contributing are largely a thing of the past."

Fifth year seniors on this year's two deep:

Toussaint, Gallon, Lewan, Schofield, Q. Washington, Cam Gordon, Thomas Gordon, Brenodon Gibbons.

Throw in Devin and and Jake Ryan next year (from a totally depleted class).

It's still smart to redshirt as many kids as possible.. unless they are the best players at their position... like Peppers in 2014!

Seems like we are looking very hard for a SAM to complete this class of linebackers, so Ferns is most likely seen as an inside LB.

That horse deserves to be thrashed.  I love and trust these coaches.... but they aren't perfect and they really blew that one.  It's even more frustrating when amateurs like us could see  it so clearly.  Nonetheless, I say again, lest I be misuderstood, I would not trade these coaches for anyone in the country... and they are human.

Good Call

I can see Gelen as either a WDE or even a SLB .  He won the state wrestling championship at 220 lbs., so I guess it depends on how much bigger he gets.  Really like his athleticism.

13 weeks 15 hours ago I always thought he looked

I always thought he looked about 5'10".  Hoping for the best as he gave us so much joy.  Really anxious to see his 40 time.

13 weeks 5 days ago Not 100% Correct

You are allowed 5 CALENDAR years to complete 4 athletic seasons, and the calendar year begins once one is enrolled.

So by enrolling in Jan. of 2015 he counts like a '15 recruit and can play through the 2019 season (assuming he sits one season out).  However, if he enrolls in the Fall of 2014, then his eleigibility clock starts from that calendar year (even if he is not on scholarship and does not practice with the team) so would end after the 2018 season.

Agreed - I'd really like to see us go after Gelen as a WDE.

14 weeks 6 days ago Third Down Back

I think he is still seen as the best speed option in the backfield, so if he has learned how to pick up the blitz he will be the heir apparent to V. Smith as third down back.  The other option is Drake Johnson who is just as fast but bigger... and had practice buzz at the end of the season.  Don't sleep on Johnson as a possibility at regular tailback as well.  Norfleet  will move back to offense but is too small for the third down blocking so perhaps will be used in the slot and/or jet sweeps.

16 weeks 4 days ago The Glasgows

We also picked up the Glasgow brothers in the last two classes.  Graham is a big all state OL who walked on for the  '11 class and has created some minor buzz.  His brother Ryan walked on last year and is a big DL who also got some mention from the coaches.  They were both two stars and not likely to ever start, but they provide depth to our lines which are still thin.

18 weeks 4 days ago Great Work

A lovely stroll down OL memory lane and a cautionary tale for optimists like myself.

I take heart from the fact that the projected '13 OL has just one guy with only 2 years in the program.... and he's KALIS.  That core will be quite seasoned by the time we have to break in two new tackles for the '14 season.  Those two will likely have 3 years in the program at that point so with a bit of luck and good coaching we should be more than fine.

Great work as always.

20 weeks 2 days ago He played four years for Bo

He played four years for Bo and then coached at Michigan for 13 years (1995 - 2007).  He also set an NCAA record by coaching a 1,000-yard receiver for eight consecutive years from 1998 to 2005.  Was let go by RR (big mistake) so you can understand the loyalty to Ferentz who gave him a job when his alma mater cut him loose.
If that's not a Michigan Man then who is?

20 weeks 2 days ago According to Sam Webb

According to Sam Webb Campbell was the first to be offered the WR coaching job by Hoke, but decided to stay at Iowa.  He's a good coach, a Michigan man, and a great recruiter.

Thanks Brian for the great writing and perspective  (dot dot dot)  as always...

20 weeks 5 days ago I respectfully disagree.  Now

I respectfully disagree.  Now that RJS has been confirmed as an inside LB  it means that in 2014 we will have only MFJR at SLB - and there is a slim chance that  he might go early.  So I think the coaches would like to get McCray some PT next year so that he is ready for (at least) the two deep in 2014.  The recruitment of Ball would give them another potential SLB, but he is more likely to red shirt in order to bulk up.

That's correct - he was benched after the horror for the rest of that year in favor of Englemon.  Started at safety the next year under RR/Shaefer with mixed results.  As a senior moved to SAM and was very effective as an undersized LB (more of a box safety).  Kicked around the NFL for a few years but now has found a new gear.  Really happy for him.

24 weeks 5 days ago A Simple Suggestion

Why not rank the teams according to average stars and still have to total points column at the end to reflect the (less important) number of commits.  With no extra work you would have rankings that are more rational.

24 weeks 6 days ago Time to Rationalize your Rating System

Thanks for the great work Ace, but can you really say with a straight face that Illinois has a better class than ohio?  Perhaps this will inspire you to devise a rating system that makes more sense than just multiplying recruits times rating averages.  How about something like average stars for a fixed number of recruits like the final Rivals ratings but with a touch more creativity.  Maybe Nate Silver has some ideas...

25 weeks 6 days ago Going for it was the kind of

Going for it was the kind of gutsy call that I love about Hoke. Ferentz, Lloyd, DeBord, et al would have punted.   A simple rollout with the option of hiting a 3 yard pass or running for it was all that was needed... and the PA would actually have worked in that situation!  The call was cool, but running Denard into a stacked middle was Einstein's definition of insanity.

26 weeks 1 day ago That doesn't explain the play

29 weeks 3 days ago According to Sam Webb our

According to Sam Webb our coaches were very impressed with his speed when he camped at Michigan and considered him a potential deep threat type of receiver.

He is a raw talent with great atheleticism  and could play defense as well.   Right now it looks like he is being recruited as a (much needed) receiver... but you can never have too many  corners.

29 weeks 4 days ago Back when Hoke was assembling

Back when Hoke was assembling his staff Brian commented that Borges' resume had a scary resemblance to that of Gerg.  Some success years ago in situations that abounded with talent, but many stops along the way that were much less memorable.  No recent success though,  the the two years at SDSU were OK.  I like Borges, but man....

29 weeks 4 days ago Watkins and Soup Campbell

As I recall Watkins was never coming to Michigan - one visit in the winter was enough cold weather for him.  His team mate was definitely coming before the process, but insisted that his buddy Watkins was solid for Clemson.

According to Sam Webb, Erik Campbell was offered his old job back by Hoke but decided to stay at Iowa.  FWIW I thought it was a big mistake for RR to let him go...former  Michigan player, great coach and excellent recruiter.

34 weeks 6 days ago Dileo was Open

It looked to me like Dileo was breaking open to the outside and any pass thrown that way was likely to be a TD, and at worst an incompletion.  The problem was Te'o being right in the face of Smith too quickly.  Pretty good call by Borges and a great play by Te'o.

I can see Ojemudia as a backup if Clark is not available (pleeze no), but if Beyer gets hurt then you might see Roe shift back to WDE with Heitzman, Brink and one of the big freshmen (Godin or Wormley) backing up at SDE.  So let's hope that none of this happens and Clark is given a slap on the wrist and has a great season.

42 weeks 3 days ago Tamani

Good call showing Carter as a boundary corner/nickel.  The  persistance of calling him a safety (starting with Hoke's signing day press conference) always seemed out of synch.  He was a pretty good corner in HS despite the perceived lack of hip swivel twitchiness and we no longer need his name to bulk up the "S" section of the roster.

43 weeks 2 days ago Thomas Gordon

Thomas Gordon practiced at slot corner until he was moved to safety, so perhaps he will drop down to the slot in nickel situations and another safety (M-Rob, Furman, Wilson) will come on.

1 year 14 weeks ago Depth and experience = two sides of the same coin

When one speaks about depth the point being made is how far down the depth chart can we go and still have guys that we can win with.  For example:  having just three true freshmen at a position obviously does not provide much depth.  You have numbers but no depth that you can rely on to perform.

1 year 14 weeks ago Our depth is reasonably OK

Our depth is reasonably OK for this coming year, but in 2013 we will have only two QBs plus a (very good) true freshman.  That is extremely thin.  Our current walk ons are marginal and also more suited to the Rich Rod offense.  Many of us wanted a scholarship QB in the 2012 class, so a solid walk on with good size would be a welcomed addition.

1 year 16 weeks ago Bell! and a few opinions

Isaiah Bell at WDE?  The enigmatic Mr. Bell arises in a strange position.

Other notes/opinions that are of course merely conjecture at this point:

Heitzman more likely at SDE - if not moved to TE..... however the other "Z" (Paskorz) should definitely move to TE as he is buried at SLB.

I know they keep listing Wilkins as a DT but he seems more like a SDE.

T. Carter a bit light for SS - see him more as a FS - or switch to corner  where he played in HS since we struck out on Reeves.

RJS will likely wind up at SLB but for now he was recruited to the middle slots so yeah.

BWC more likely a NT than DT?  Hard to imagine just Pee Wee and Ash at the nose.

OL:  Kalis at Guard  and Bars at center (Unless we get Kozan ?!)

1 year 16 weeks ago Chris Bryant

Nice job but I think you have Chris Bryant under rated.  Coach Hoke mentioned him during bowl practices and there is other buzz that he may even contend for a starting spot.

1 year 16 weeks ago RVB was a consensus Four Star

RVB was a consensus Four Star - Scout, Rivals and a high 78 on ESPN which did not give stars back in 2007.  That said I like the idea of Willie Henry giving us more depth at 3Tech and  Scout shows his interest in UM as "High".  He also shows some potential as an offensive guard, though I think we are looking at him mostly as a DT.   FWIW I am totally confident that Mattison passed on both Danny O and Schutt because they did not fit what he wants in a "Michigan Defense".

1 year 20 weeks ago Bubble-type screens

Thanks for the good work as always Ace.  One aspect of the VT offense that you failed to mention is the frequent use of quick hitches.  This is similar to the bubble screen, but in the bubble the slot bows out to create an angle while the wideout blocks the corner.  In the VT version the slot heads directly to the outside CB to block him toward the sideline while the wideout takes the quick hitch and looks for YAC.  I saw this over and over in the highlight films.  It's an effective "long handoff" with a big WR able to make consistent yardage, so it will be interesting to see what G-Matt (praised be his name) comes up with to stop it.

Reeves is not short for a corner.  The average NFL corner is about 5'11" and Reeves is close to that.  Plus he is a solid 185 lbs. and much more polished than Yuri (or T-Rich for  that matter).  He would be a great pick up and then we could add Wright who would definitely need a year or two to get his technique to catch up with his raw talent.

Seems like Grant is trending our way and as he is getting a late push from both Okla. and Ark. (both good TE schools) it would appear that he is underrated by the services and is more like a 4*.

Thus the urgent feeling amongst many of us since the Spring that we need more DTs.  This led to consternation (to put it mildly) when we passed on Tommy Scutt and cooled on Danny O'Brien.   Pipkins is a gem and will play from day one.  Somehow we must fashion the combination of Q, BWC, Ash,Rock  and/or another freshman into a serviceable DT rotation.  Scary,  but my faith in Mattison abounds, and since it was his decision to stop after Pipkins I'll suspend my angst.

1 year 28 weeks ago Sam Webb seems to agree that

Sam Webb seems to agree that AJ might move inside (up to 290 lbs. and did well at OT this year), and also  thinks that it is likely for Pharoah to move to TE as he has done well as a reciever this year.  Apparently Pharoah now prefers TE to DE.  I don't see Drake as an H-Back; if anything he could wind up  at WR but should get a shot at RB.

1 year 28 weeks ago Actually it was the

Actually it was the announcers who said out of bounds - the official signaled time out.  We could not see the sideline on the TV angle so apparently it was ruled that Gallon was tackled inbounds.  Time out to move the chains and then resume.

Good:  Defense continues to be much better than was expected - this despite the fact that  Kovacs did not seem 100% - I could not "feel" him on the field.  Also do not think Troy is better than T.Gordon - could have used Gordon's stronger tackling.

Bad:  Lack of intensity for much of the game - they looked like they wanted it much more than we did until near the end.  Using Devin when Denard is not hurt - he is not ready and it breaks our rhythm.

1 year 28 weeks ago I agree that Denard has lost

I agree that Denard has lost some of what made him such a special runner.  He seems tentative on the edges and stumbles more often when cutting.  Many times he is that crucial half step from from breaking free - a half step that he easily had 13 months ago.  Don't get me wrong - I love the guy and am pulling for him 100%, but the difference in his running ability is palpable.

To get back to the OP - yeah where was Gordon?  He's bigger than Wolfolk, hits harder, and covers the flat routes better.  If it was a discipline problem then how come he played on special teams?

1 year 28 weeks ago The announcers said Gallon

The announcers said Gallon was OB but apparently he was not and  the time out was for the first down.  You could not see where he went down on TV so if  ruled down in bounds the clock would start when the ball was marked - as it was.  Perhaps the refs actually got one thing correct in that miserable last series.
