Thank you for this annual series on the incoming "lifeblood of the program". It gets us pumped for the June enrollments and the ever-exciting Summer weigh-ins. As always you have anticipated all of my questions before I had the chance to ask them - the picture with Gedeon silences some people's 6'1" fears (as does his highlight film where he towers over most of his teamates). Totally agree that he doesn't jump out at you yet.... he could be really solid. |

Thank you Seth. Great perspective and excellent timing. One quibble: You say "consensus five stars" but I think we are talking about Unanimous five stars. A consensus 5* would mean 3 or possibly even just 2 of the 4 ratings being 5*.

Ferns seems much better suited to the inside, and it seems he was recruited to play there. I agree that he has some length and speed so could play SLB, but most scouts see him as a prototypical MLB/WLB... with emphasis on the MIKE.
EDIT- meant this as a reply to EGD who sees Fernes as a SLB. |

We are definitley after a SAM prospect (Winovich or similar), and likely will take another inside guy now that Ringer is gone. It looked like that might be Watson, but we cooled on him... probably due to a meh camp performance where he measured only 5'10".

| 5 weeks 2 days ago | Gardner's Redshirt |
You are way too informed to really believe that DG's redshirt was for an "injury".He was slated for a redshirt but then everyone was up in arms that RR had wasted it. Then came his "back injury" after Tate came out of the doghouse... and methinks that 's why it took so long to get the extra eligibility confirmed. |

" I completely agree with you about redshirts, for any position. 5th year guys contributing are largely a thing of the past." Fifth year seniors on this year's two deep: Toussaint, Gallon, Lewan, Schofield, Q. Washington, Cam Gordon, Thomas Gordon, Brenodon Gibbons. Throw in Devin and and Jake Ryan next year (from a totally depleted class). It's still smart to redshirt as many kids as possible.. unless they are the best players at their position... like Peppers in 2014! |

You are allowed 5 CALENDAR years to complete 4 athletic seasons, and the calendar year begins once one is enrolled. So by enrolling in Jan. of 2015 he counts like a '15 recruit and can play through the 2019 season (assuming he sits one season out). However, if he enrolls in the Fall of 2014, then his eleigibility clock starts from that calendar year (even if he is not on scholarship and does not practice with the team) so would end after the 2018 season. |

| 18 weeks 3 days ago | Third Down Back |
I think he is still seen as the best speed option in the backfield, so if he has learned how to pick up the blitz he will be the heir apparent to V. Smith as third down back. The other option is Drake Johnson who is just as fast but bigger... and had practice buzz at the end of the season. Don't sleep on Johnson as a possibility at regular tailback as well. Norfleet will move back to offense but is too small for the third down blocking so perhaps will be used in the slot and/or jet sweeps. |

We also picked up the Glasgow brothers in the last two classes. Graham is a big all state OL who walked on for the '11 class and has created some minor buzz. A lovely stroll down OL memory lane and a cautionary tale for optimists like myself. I take heart from the fact that the projected '13 OL has just one guy with only 2 years in the program.... and he's KALIS. That core will be quite seasoned by the time we have to break in two new tackles for the '14 season. Those two will likely have 3 years in the program at that point so with a bit of luck and good coaching we should be more than fine. |

He played four years for Bo and then coached at Michigan for 13 years (1995 - 2007). He also set an NCAA record by coaching a 1,000-yard receiver for eight consecutive years from 1998 to 2005. Was let go by RR (big mistake) so you can understand the loyalty to Ferentz who gave him a job when his alma mater cut him loose. |

I respectfully disagree. Now that RJS has been confirmed as an inside LB it means that in 2014 we will have only MFJR at SLB - and there is a slim chance that he might go early. So I think the coaches would like to get McCray some PT next year so that he is ready for (at least) the two deep in 2014. The recruitment of Ball would give them another potential SLB, but he is more likely to red shirt in order to bulk up. |

| 28 weeks 2 days ago | A Simple Suggestion |
Why not rank the teams according to average stars and still have to total points column at the end to reflect the (less important) number of commits. With no extra work you would have rankings that are more rational. |

Thanks for the great work Ace, but can you really say with a straight face that Illinois has a better class than ohio? Perhaps this will inspire you to devise a rating system that makes more sense than just multiplying recruits times rating averages. How about something like average stars for a fixed number of recruits like the final Rivals ratings but with a touch more creativity. Maybe Nate Silver has some ideas... |

The call was cool, but running Denard into a stacked middle was Einstein's definition of insanity. |

According to Sam Webb our coaches were very impressed with his speed when he camped at Michigan and considered him a potential deep threat type of receiver. Back when Hoke was assembling his staff Brian commented that Borges' resume had a scary resemblance to that of Gerg. FWIW I thought it was a big mistake for RR to let him go...former Michigan player, great coach and excellent recruiter. |

It looked to me like Dileo was breaking open to the outside and any pass thrown that way was likely to be a TD, and at worst an incompletion. The problem was Te'o being right in the face of Smith too quickly. Pretty good call by Borges and a great play by Te'o. |

Good call showing Carter as a boundary corner/nickel. The persistance of calling him a safety (starting with Hoke's signing day press conference) always seemed out of synch. He was a pretty good corner in HS despite the perceived lack of hip swivel twitchiness and we no longer need his name to bulk up the "S" section of the roster. |
| 46 weeks 6 days ago | Thomas Gordon |
Thomas Gordon practiced at slot corner until he was moved to safety, so perhaps he will drop down to the slot in nickel situations and another safety (M-Rob, Furman, Wilson) will come on. |

By the way I think it was on TTB that I saw the surprising possibility of Wilson being given a shot at corner - as said above I never thought it was at all likely to happen. |

Word is that we have cooled on Crayton. No specific reasons given but seems like Webb is now the most likely NT target. |

Though both positions are technically DTs they are very different and the kids recruited to each position are completely different types. Poggi could never be a NT while someone like Pipkins is a prototypical NT. Lumping NTs and 3 techs together as DTs is the same as calling both a cover corner and a big SS DBs - yes they are both defensive backs but the type of athlete recruited for each position is completely different. |

It would appear that by getting an excellent walk on like Mandle we no longer need another TE for 2013. Great job by the staff to boost our depth with a quality kid and no loss of scholarships. |
| 1 year 13 weeks ago | 247 rating and "four star backs" |
Actually his 89 on 247 is the highest possible 3* as 90 is a 4*, so he is not a "middling three star". Another quote that is a bit misleading: "Michigan has a pair of four star backs in this class". While Shallman is a 4* - and will be an asset - no one rates him as a 4 * running back: Athlete on Rivals, FB/DE on both Scout and 247. |

100% agree. The eventual position of Shallman is not in competition with what both Deveon and Isaac bring to the table.... think Aaron Shea..... or Shonte Orr. |

Sam Webb and all other insiders feel that we will almost certainly take three receivers - and ideally one will be a speed guy who can stretch the field. |

He is 170 overall on Rivals (4*), #10 wr and 94 overall (4*) on 247, and #5 wr (4*) on Scout, so no he is not under rated by the services. But his offer sheet is very light for a guy with those ratings and that highlight reel. |

With an extraordianry talent like Cravens you take him for wherever he wants to play and see what happens when he gets on campus. Meanwhile Conley is strictly a corner and Dymonte could play either safety spot - which is what Mattison wants from all of his safeties eventually. |

Nice complete list. I would only add Orndoff the Gronk-like TE who we are trying to pry away from the Badgers. Gedeon & Levenberry look like SAMs (as does RJS from 2012), while O'Daniel is an ILB (MIKE or WIL). IMHO McCray is OK but not in the same class as the others.

Thanks for the work you put in. - just a few suggestions. I would leave out the PAT's, maybe less crowd shots, and cut the time coming out of the huddle so that it is mostly all action. Also, show more of the dirves, not just the plays down by the goal line - it will give the game more continuity. Good first effort and I look forward to more in the future. |

| 1 year 18 weeks ago | Depth and experience = two sides of the same coin |
When one speaks about depth the point being made is how far down the depth chart can we go and still have guys that we can win with. For example: having just three true freshmen at a position obviously does not provide much depth. You have numbers but no depth that you can rely on to perform. |
| 1 year 18 weeks ago | Our depth is reasonably OK |
Our depth is reasonably OK for this coming year, but in 2013 we will have only two QBs plus a (very good) true freshman. That is extremely thin. Our current walk ons are marginal and also more suited to the Rich Rod offense. Many of us wanted a scholarship QB in the 2012 class, so a solid walk on with good size would be a welcomed addition. |

Mario's combine time was about 4.6 as I recall, but he is "football fast" and gets separation with his moves. |

The numbers only apply to scholarship players. Take out the walk-ons (#) and the numbers work. |
| 1 year 19 weeks ago | Bell! and a few opinions |
Isaiah Bell at WDE? The enigmatic Mr. Bell arises in a strange position. Other notes/opinions that are of course merely conjecture at this point: Heitzman more likely at SDE - if not moved to TE..... however the other "Z" (Paskorz) should definitely move to TE as he is buried at SLB. I know they keep listing Wilkins as a DT but he seems more like a SDE. T. Carter a bit light for SS - see him more as a FS - or switch to corner where he played in HS since we struck out on Reeves. RJS will likely wind up at SLB but for now he was recruited to the middle slots so yeah. BWC more likely a NT than DT? Hard to imagine just Pee Wee and Ash at the nose. OL: Kalis at Guard and Bars at center (Unless we get Kozan ?!)

| 1 year 19 weeks ago | Chris Bryant |
Nice job but I think you have Chris Bryant under rated. Coach Hoke mentioned him during bowl practices and there is other buzz that he may even contend for a starting spot. |
| 1 year 20 weeks ago | RVB was a consensus Four Star |
RVB was a consensus Four Star - Scout, Rivals and a high 78 on ESPN which did not give stars back in 2007. That said I like the idea of Willie Henry giving us more depth at 3Tech and Scout shows his interest in UM as "High". He also shows some potential as an offensive guard, though I think we are looking at him mostly as a DT. FWIW I am totally confident that Mattison passed on both Danny O and Schutt because they did not fit what he wants in a "Michigan Defense". Senior highlights: |

| 1 year 22 weeks ago | His junior highlights seem |
His junior highlights seem to say good blocker and decent receiver. His offer list (as noted in another comment) is much stronger than his star rating. Oklahoma and Arkansas are top TE recruiters and both want this guy. Bottom line he has the size and polish to fill a very big hole in our depth chart next year. AJ will be the road grader and this guy may see a lot of PT if Moore does not improve. http://www.scoutingohio.com/index.php/view-profile.html?task=userProfile&user=6771 |

Great point. I would feel much more comfortable with another scholarship QB on the roster. |
| 1 year 23 weeks ago | Sam Grant has solid offers |
Sam Grant has solid offers from both Arkansas and Oklahoma which are two schools that rely on tight ends and recruit them very well. Oklahoma as gone so far as to assure Grant that even though they have two TEs committed they will accept a commitment from him. Offers speak louder than stars, and his highlights are pretty solid. |
| 1 year 23 weeks ago | Marell Evans? |
I think the guy in the photo with Roundtree is Evans but not sure. |
| 1 year 24 weeks ago | Bubble-type screens |
Thanks for the good work as always Ace. One aspect of the VT offense that you failed to mention is the frequent use of quick hitches. This is similar to the bubble screen, but in the bubble the slot bows out to create an angle while the wideout blocks the corner. In the VT version the slot heads directly to the outside CB to block him toward the sideline while the wideout takes the quick hitch and looks for YAC. I saw this over and over in the highlight films. It's an effective "long handoff" with a big WR able to make consistent yardage, so it will be interesting to see what G-Matt (praised be his name) comes up with to stop it. Happy New Year fellow Michigan Maniacs. |

Mike Cox for sure and probably Terrence Robinson if we need the room (for DeAnthony Arnett and/or Anthony Zettel??!). We are not obligated to give a 5th year and conversely the players are not obligated to return. That said, there will likely be other attrition from the roster so we may seek to keep T-Rob as he has been a terror on special teams. |
| 1 year 25 weeks ago | Reeves is not short for a |
Reeves is not short for a corner. The average NFL corner is about 5'11" and Reeves is close to that. Plus he is a solid 185 lbs. and much more polished than Yuri (or T-Rich for that matter). He would be a great pick up and then we could add Wright who would definitely need a year or two to get his technique to catch up with his raw talent. Seems like Grant is trending our way and as he is getting a late push from both Okla. and Ark. (both good TE schools) it would appear that he is underrated by the services and is more like a 4*. Sam Webb thinks we might bank the last (28th) spot if we get OL, CB and TE covered ....... In any event it's all Win-Win from here on in. |
| 1 year 25 weeks ago | The 3 Tech/5 Tech slots are |
The 3 Tech/5 Tech slots are wide open for next year. I agree that Q will get the first call at 3 Tech (and can move inside to NT) but past that it will be a battle between Brink (if he can put on 20 lbs. of good weight), Wilkins, Rock, Heitzman, and the freshman trio of Strobel, Wormley & Godin. |
| 1 year 25 weeks ago | Nice work - a very helpful |
Nice work - a very helpful summary. Seems like you confused Chris Rock (NTCR) with Brennan Beyer, as it was Beyer who switched from WDE to SAM. Rock will likely be one of those 3 tech/5 tech swing guys. As for projecting which of the four LB recruits will be the SAM, I think even the coaches are not certain until they see them on the field, but perhaps RJS has the closest to ideal SAM physical attributes. |

| 1 year 30 weeks ago | Why Houston instead of Boise |
Why Houston instead of Boise State? I must be missing something because Boise is ahead of Houston in the BCS yet is slated for the Poinsetta Bowl due to lack of a conference hook-up to a good game. I thought the higher ranked non-bcs school in the top 12 would get the bid - apparently not. That said, I would much prefer to play Houston as Boise is a tougher out. |

If we don't find a third EE we will not be able to take 28 in this class. Any ideas on that Ace? |
| 1 year 30 weeks ago | The gaping holes in our |
The gaping holes in our D-Line for next year are in the interior and SDE - not at WDE where Beyer or Ryan could help. WDE is in good shape with Roh, Black and Clark (and maybe Beyer?). SDE, NT and DT.... not so much. |
| 1 year 30 weeks ago | Cam to WR |
This is an interesting possibility given Cam's inability to get PT in front of Beyer. We are pretty thin at WR even given the high liklihood that we will take two this year. Cam was pretty well regarded as a potential possession receiver and he was the go to guy for Devin when Gardner was a HS Junior. |
