Most of us are very hopeful that JH will reverse the trend of wasted redshirts, but perhaps he can also mitigate some of the damage that has been done in that regard over the past few years. Why not smooth out the kinks in the roster for 2017 by handing out a few non-freshman redshirts. The defensive ones that seem most doable to me are:
Stribling - Gives him another year to fill out and we are deep at CB this year.
Dymonte - A year of good coaching and then two more years to live up to his potential. Could say the same for Delano Hill but one of them has to play this year for depth.
Gedeon - We are stacked at ILB this year and light next year. Has great potential to be a valuable 2 year starter in '16 and '17.
There are a couple I would like to see on offense as well:
Houma - He's not needed this year with Kerridge, and would give us a senior FB next year.
De'Veon - Convince him that if he has any future in the NFL it is at FB. Take a year to put on 15 lbs. of muscle and learn the position - he already has the attitude and could still be useful in short yardage

Nice work. Several of us have been noting these looming donut holes in posts, but the majority of the board seemed oblivious (Bolivian?). The OL situation for 2018 is particularly glaring as we have effectively only taken one last year and so far only two in this class. That means only 3 (!) OL in 2018 not including the '16 and '17 classes. We need four this year to get the pipline in order.
Fortunately, it looks like attrition for lack of PT will increase the sizes of both this class and the next one beyond what is normal.

|21 weeks 7 hours ago||Great Stuff||
Thanks for the continuing excellent content - a few thoughts:
- QB: Malzone will be the guy in '16. We all crave Hogan or similar to get us through '15, but if that does not materialize the JH effect on both Speight and Shane will be positive.
- RB: Isaac will be the star in '15, and I think there is a good shot to flip Weber. Drake is good if healthy; Green was always over rated; Smith would be wise to make the move to FB where he could be excellent.
- FB: Insert Wasted Redshirt Rant! Houma should be a RS soph grrr. Kerridge is a stud for '15 with a solid back up who will depart with him. In '16, hopefully Shallman embraces the role, and/or Smith makes the move.
- OL: MOAR recruits. Our OL pipeline is like a snake that swallowed two large meals with nothing before or after. Hopefully we will take at least three this year and four next year.
- WR: We will be fine. Harris, Ways and Canteen all have star potential as will Cole. I still have hope that we will offer (and flip) Grant Perry = baller.
- TE: You forgot about Khalid Hill who could be a very valuable H Back if he comes back strong from the ACL.

|25 weeks 9 hours ago||Average stars and coinciding years||
Thanks for the effort. Of course it would be more accurate to compare the results of the third year against the recruits of the first year as pointed out by The Integral in #4 above. Since you are tracking player development, you could use the recruitng classes from the previous coach for the first 2 - 3 years. Thus Harbaugh's onfield results for 2007 would be compared against his predecessor's 2004 recruiting class (as noted by ShadowStorm 33).
Also, and very significant, is that using class ratings is a distortion, whereas average stars is a much more accurate (albiet imperfect) measure.

The Much Maligned Manny Diaz re-surfaced as DC for La tech this year. Last year their defense was 114 on S&P and 96 on FEI. This year with Manny coming in they were #28 and #33 respectively. So Brian's suggestion that Manny's implosion at Texas might have been a reflection of the overall collapse holds water... and that gives some cred to Mullen's ability to choose staff.

|42 weeks 10 hours ago||Class Size means Nothing||
I have never seen a cogent reason why class size should matter in recruiting ratings. The only rational way to compare recruiting classes is to throw out special teams recruits (for the reasons Ace mentioned), and rate all schools based solely on average stars. You might want it based on the median 15 recruits for large classes.
How can anyone think that a class of 25 3 stars is better than a class of 15 4 stars (assuming as we must that stars - for all their faults - are the measuring stick). The fact that a school has a lot of open scholarships does not mean that they recruit well...
|42 weeks 1 day ago||Sure red shirt||
Bunting is VERY skinny. Needs at least a year with Wellman to approach D1 TE size.
|44 weeks 10 hours ago||No Offers||
Henry and Clark did not have osu offers. I don't think we have ever gotten a recruit from that school who had an offer from the bucks... maybe back in Bo's day but not since.
|46 weeks 3 days ago||Many a slip twixt Shane & Alex||
I would not be so quick to annoint Speight as Shane's successor. Malzone is a Winner, and every bit as talented as the other '15 QBs that we courted. I see him as a 3 year starter leading us to 3 excellent seasons.
|51 weeks 1 day ago||Ty Isaac||
With all due respect (because I agree with most of Brian's observations) the clips of Isaac from last year show vastly more potential than anything I have seen from Derrick Green. Even with offensive line variance firmly in place, he looked better than anybody currently on the roster. Not explosive? A lot to like in the short cuts, balance and power that Ty delivered in minimum PT.

As noted several times on this blog - Brunson is a point Guard, while Cleman is a SG/wing.
They are being recruited for very different roles. Getting Harris fills us up at the 2-3... but does not effect the recruitment of Brunson.

What are the odds of a "random" drug test being administered to a player who was clearly only suited up for moral support? What kind of system would choose this guy from amongst all the others? Aren't there any human beings with functioning brains who review which players are "randomly" tested. I don't have the answers, but the questions boggle...

|1 year 9 weeks ago||Great Idea||
The optional extra point is a winner.
As for the 37 yarder, they will have to move the 2 point conversion back as well - maybe to the 5 yard line depending on what stats say. It should be twice as difficult = twice the failure rate. Not an easy stat to come by...

|1 year 16 weeks ago||Brilliant||
The best rating system I have seen by far. Normalizing to a standard 25 man class was an excellent tweak to what was already leagues ahead of the competition. Ratings that still lean on class size to the detriment of quality are ridiculous. A gold medal to the Mathlete on the eve of the Olympics. Thank you.

Douglas had a great senior year at running back:
Also would guess he is closer to 190 lbs. by now which is plenty big enough. I really like the move as we are well stocked with young talented corners.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||The (overly?) large 2013 OL||
The (overly?) large 2013 OL class will be gone after 2017 so we need to take at least three each year to get the numbers right by then. I'd like to see 4 next year (and would have preferred 3 this year).

"Little Favre"... nice. I love this kid and REALLY don't want to see him in green and white.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Sione Houma||
I too think the RB depth is dicey. Perhaps Houma could move to RB as he is more agile than the other fullbacks and Nuss does not use the FB much.

Not likely because Webb said we were still pursuing Ballage. I'm guessing it's the academic problems noted in the posts above. Also, I don't think we would let a recruit have so much say... except about 2012 QB (I know - dead horse...).
|1 year 18 weeks ago||Recruiting Never Sleeps||
Thanks Brandon - we need our recruitnik fixes over the weekends.
I'd be happy with both Jones and Mack.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||Safety?||
Mack's highlights on defense are pretty impressive so we may be looking to take him AND Jeff Jones. Start them both out at RB and have safety as a .... safety net.

Heck is also our recruiting coordinator so it makes sense for him to check out a new possible offeree.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Inside Zone||
That's what I have read, and he uses the outside zone for counters (what are these "counters" you speaketh of?). Sounds like the kind of simple yet nunaced system that could bring a quick turnaround.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Tempo and Intelligence||
I am tired of Michigan always looking like the dumb team. Get someone who will have us one step ahead instead of two steps behind. We don't need an NFL retread who is steeped in that static culture. My ideal candidate is a relatively young guy with OC experience and the ability to create winning quarterbacks.... but most of all he must bring us into the 21st century with tempo, toughness and smarts. We want people to marvel at how innovative and creative are those guys in the winged helmets. Play to WIN.

In answer to : "But then who do you put on special teams?"
With normal depth you have plenty of sophmores and older who are not starters but are on the 2 (or 3) deep. Volia: experienced and talented special teams... hopefully coming our way by 2015.
The rule should be that if he is not a superstud and is not absolutley needed for immediate depth then redshirt. Seth's take was eloquent Fifth year senior >>>>>>>>> freshman on special teams... it's elementary.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Fox??||
I think Fox came in with an ACL so not likely practicing yet. Also Burzynski out with ACL. So I would plug in Dawson (RT?) and Bars (RG) on the 2nd team. Also flip Mags and Braden on the "1st" team. Kugler is probably good to go and will be... starting center??
