Is Spike starting to rock a comb over? It's looking like first to third on the top and second to home on the sides.
|3 days 18 hours ago||Totally.||
Besides, I learned from last year not to judge this team too quickly (retroactive self-negbang). Big picture, the only concern I have is that Beilein teams require enough time to play together that integrating top talent into this team will be really difficult.

Why do Michigan's players back off when they shoot? Is the idea that they'll just concede the rebound unless it falls to McGary? I don't buy that you have to give up rebounds just because you're smaller. Does Michigan give up on offensive rebounds to better set up its defense?

My boss cut my salary by 30%. And I'm sterile.

Coach, Green does seem to get tripped up a lot. What tends to cause this, and is it something that can be overcome?

It was like they were channeling Lloyd Carr, but a really stupid Lloyd Carr, in OT.

Brian, I got one for you right here. And it's not because I'm a Juggalo, but because I'm ancient and think it's important to get a little shmaltzy as you get older: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQqyDj7RX6Y

Is Jabrill Peppers the next Brian Boitano? I could totally see him using his magical fire breath to save the maidens fair.

When I first saw that reference on this site, I was confused, because "taco pants" meant somethng else entirely to me:
"The super tight and stretchy leggings or pants, such a yoga pants, that have become popular as women's outerwear circa 2008.
The form fitting qualities of these pants outline and accentuate the vagina or 'taco.'"
At first I figured maybe mgoblog was questioning the receiver's manhood in failing to leap high enough, which was odd because I never thought leaping really high was a traditional test of manhood.

Ian Bunting sounds like Nick Andopolis. I bet he has a 29-piece drum kit in his basement.

I think mojo-recoverd Morgan could be a great compliment to McGary. Having both out there would reduce the risk that McGary gets into foul trouble against scoring bigs, without sacrificing anything defensively down low. Offensively, I think McGary's talented enough that he will be able to "play small" very effectively, if necessary.
Hey, this is exciting!

Why is Fitz so far under the radar? Is he not expected to be 100% by August? At his worst, he did about as well as every other running back last year, and the offensive line this year should not be as anemic.
Or is he not very well-suited for Borges' scheme?

That was great. I thought the original line about he who sheds his blood with me really applies to Morgan.
Awesome post, Seth.

Per Michael Rothstein:
Cutting down the nets, getting a sports-drink bath, participating in the Harlem Shake on the plane on the way back from Texas. The stoicism, for a night, disappeared. The lifelong realization eluded him through his radio show all the way until Tuesday morning waking up next to his wife, Kathleen.
"I woke up this morning and I got up, said, 'I feel great,'" Beilein said. "Then I said, 'Are we still going to the Final Four? Is this true?' She said, 'Yes, we are.' There was a moment there, I realized it happened."

. . . McGary would have known to collapse BEFORE the dong punch.
Of course, if Crean had coached Michigan, the team would never had adjusted its game against Kansas, or against anyone, ever. So there's that.

Has anyone read this article in Grantland about the Miami Heat, and thought the decription of Miami's offense sounded like Michigan's?
"League observers used to talk about Orlando's four-out/one-in system, with four shooters surrounding Dwight Howard in the post or on the pick-and-roll. Miami and Erik Spoelstra have one-upped that by often playing a five-out system, with all five guys moving around the 3-point arc as the Heat run through a series of rehearsed actions while hunting for gaps in the defense."
Is this what Beilein is going for? If so, does Michigan really need to play "big"? Or does it just need its athletes to stick around until they get the system? If the latter, are Beilein's schemes doomed by their success? In other words, would his schemes only work fully if his players all stayed for 3-4 years?

Maybe Wormser should design a special basketball to go with Morgan's limp-wristed shooting style.
|39 weeks 4 days ago||So why are the freshmen||
So why are the freshmen getting worse, then? Or why are almost ALL of the players getting worse? Hardaway isn't where he was. Morgan can't make layups. Robinson looks terrified. Burke is awesome, but even his game is less efficient than it was at the start of the year. Shouldn't well-coached teams improve as they continue to play together?
|39 weeks 4 days ago||Totally agree with this||
Totally agree with this assessment. I also think the team looks really sloppy right now, and often confused late in games. The poor execution of fundamentals is Richrodian.
|39 weeks 5 days ago||But isn't that sort an||
But isn't that sort of an indictment of Hoke's recruiting for WRs? South Carolina's receivers were almost all tiny, but fast enough to get open. Shouldn't Michigan try to recruit at least one Gallon a year? Are guys like that so difficult to recruit?
I love that Hoke wants to establish a non-QB running game, but I think his (or his staff's) focus on 6'5" wide outs might hurt the team's passing options for now, or at least until Michigan can recruit guys who are guys who are fast AND tall.
|39 weeks 5 days ago||Is there anything like a||
Is there anything like a layup percenage? It seems like Michigan has had more than its share of missed layups lately, but maybe that's because missed layups are so hard to watch.
|41 weeks 5 days ago||Beilein is a system coach.||
Beilein is a system coach. If the players don't fit his system, and the game doesn't match his preferred style, he loses control. It's odd how so many people went after Borges for not adapting his schemes to his team's strengths (when clearly he was trying), but have cut Beilein so much slack on this point. Different games, but flexibility tends to help in most things.
Beilein is a very smart coach with a solid gameplan, but he's not getting the most out of his guys. Outside of Burke, you could replace any one of these players - including the guys with obvious NBA talent - with Zack Novak, and the team would be playing a lot better at both ends of the court. Part of that is because Novak is awesome, but part of that is because Beilein doesn't know what to do with guys who are big, fast or strong.
On that note, I wonder if next year's team might surprise people. With Burke gone, will the team go back to spreading out, passing the ball around, and getting everyone involved?
|43 weeks 5 days ago||Chadd Scott||
I'm not sure either, but does he deliver a double dose of pimping?
|43 weeks 6 days ago||I think a big||
I think a big back-to-the-basket player on a Beilein team would have to be at a talent level Michigan hasn't had a chance at recruiting until recently. He would have to be someone who could score facing the basket as well, and someone fairly quick.
I would love it if Michigan had a guy like Nix late in games to slow it down, make high percentage shots and draw fouls, but he would be out of sync with the team for most of the game if that's all he could do.
|43 weeks 6 days ago||Burke||
You're right that Burke came to play, but is the team relying on Burke too much? I haven't really seen Burke blow past defenders much recently (other than in transition), and he seems more interested in shooting long distance jump shots than driving to the basket. There doesn't seem to be much of an inside-outside game, and the offense isn't spreading out as well as before.
All of my comments are anecdotal, at best, and are not directed solely at Burke. It just looks like teams are playing extremely aggressive defense against him, and the team hasn't figured out a consistent method of hurting teams that do this.
