I was thinking about Lou…

I was thinking about Lou Ferrigno.

For the last several years…

For the last several years its been a Friday afternoon. The idea is let the kids get home from school so that the celebration/cry in your beer can happen in private and also so the high school guidance counselors have a weekend to cool off before they inevitably bury the UM Admission counselors.

I've seen multiple communicaes that its going to be late January for the Early Action decisions.

As was said earlier the last three years its been the afternoon of the last Friday in January.

Put it together and its going to be this afternoon.

Yeah me too. Stupid teenager.

This is 100% Matt Dudek sour…

This is 100% Matt Dudek sour grapes again. Dudek (Michigans former Director of Recruiting who was fired in 2021) was the NCAA’s source for the cheeseburger-gate stuff. All the points line up here again if you read the ESPN article.

(1) the analyst (Stalions) who is at the center of this works in the recruiting department.

(2) NCAA says violations being investigated date back to 2021 when Dudek was still on staff

the NCAA doesn’t come up with things on its own any more. Informants have to hand feed them their dirt. No way this info exists without someone who is or was inside giving to the NCAA.

This is so obvious. Alabama…

This is so obvious. Alabama was what it was because they cheated. They were leading when they could pull these kids in with bags of cash under the table. Now that everyone does it, and donors who wouldn't want to be involved with doing things that would get the school in trouble can freely do what they want, is Alabama really attractive any more? Can Alabama's alums really keep up financially with the NIL punch of alumni bases like USC and Texas and Texas A&M now that its all above-board? The answer is a definitive no.  It was one thing when you could get a top 100 recruit to come to your school with $100,000 in a brown paper bag. Now the expectations have a few more zeroes on the end placed in a car and possibly some endorsement deals in the glove compartment for good measure ( I don't mean at Billy Bob's Bait & Tackle or Cooters Used Car Lot). Alabama can't keep up. Its just that simple. Its not like the State of Alabama puts out gobs and gobs of talent so they don't have the "play for the local team" angle to bolster them either. Their bag just isn't big enough now that everyone can offer one.

I don't see a bigger power back who can grind out that one or two yards you need or at the goalline. I'd like to see someone added there.

One thing I can tell you…

One thing I can tell you Stokes needs is a couple of trips to the weight room and a lot of red meat. He's going to need to put on some muscle to survive any substantial amount of carries in the Big Ten.

Not to be a jerk but why…

Not to be a jerk but why would this guy come to sit behind JJ? He's already sitting behind Ewers at Texas. I'm sure he'll only go somewhere where he has a clear line to being the starter.

Surprised they're not looking for more of a power back to complement Cabana and the cadre of smaller speed backs we already have. I miss having some form of Ben Mason/Hammering Panda/even Hassan Haskins-ish back who can grind out that last yard.

Moody was the #2 kicker…

On a different note......considering Corum is spoken about in the top 4 to 7 for the Heisman it was interesting to see Kiper didn't even have him in the top 10 running backs. Now that these kids are making money here you have to wonder if he'll make more money doing another year in Ann Arbor than being what is probably a late mid round pick.

Moody was the #2 kicker…

Moody was the #2 kicker. Kipers list had punters and kickers on it and there were two punters before the Maryland kicker and then Moody

True story from about 10 yrs…

True story from about 10 yrs ago. I know a guy who won't fly and he drove his RV out from the northeast and left it in an out of the way spot in the Briarwood Parking lot, paid the mall security guy some cash to watch it while he went to the game and came back and it was towed. Towing for one of those is like $1000.

Hate to say it but nowhere…

Hate to say it but nowhere. As it was the only two places that were really doing RV's were Pioneer (which has now banned them) and Fingerle Lumber (which sold to the University the year before the pandemic). The University absolutely won't do it and there isn't anywhere that close that's not owned by the University that is big enough to support it. The last couple of years there have been some incidents with RV's especially at Pioneer that has made it such that no one wants the liability, certainly not of overnighters but even so, with the day parkers in the RV's.  Thats why you saw the Pioneer High School statement referencing that AAPD wanted them gone. Your best bet is to see if you can find a private homeowner somewhere in the Old West Side who can fit your RV on their lawn but that said, you're going to pay out the nose because they'll charge you for what they would have made on all those parking spots.

What this guy said.   I was there in the early 90's and happened to be back on campus that day in 1997 and noticed (1) observers weren't sticking on the sidewalks like they used to. The gauntlet had closed into the street. (2) two different rooftops with TV cameras (3) everyone videoing the whole thing. Can you blame people for not wanting to end up on the internet naked. I did it three of the four years I was in undergrad. I wouldn't have done it in 97 with cameras and the fact that spectators had moved right up to within reach of you.

Thanks for the reminder of the Halo. Damn that thing was awful. The one thing I could never figure among many awful features of the Halo was why the letters were too big/hung over the side of the Halo. Made no sense to me. It looked like a drawing of the Big House by a kindergartener.

Anyone know what happened to…

Anyone know what happened to the Bobby Scales talk?

You're missing the one big…

You're missing the one big issue with the transfer credit problem........this issue isn't just an athlete issue. They can't say athletes can transfer credits in but regular students can't. The transfer credit issue comes from the fact that the University doesn't want regular students taking half of their credits at another school, transferring in and then walking away with a Michigan degree. Truthfully part of that equation is money as the University gets paid per credit that the student takes at Michigan so by denying transfer credits the student has to make the choice of ultimately getting that Michigan degree but likely having to take an extra year at Michigan since we won't accept the credits from the other school and therefore still paying usually three years at least of Michigan classes.

I don't see this being resolved. The only way it does is ease up the transfer credit rule for everyone and then the University cuts WAY back on admitting academic transfers.

ldevon1 is 100% right. As…

ldevon1 is 100% right. As far as NIL goes the University President will have ZERO to do with it because the University itself, nor the athletic department is putting money towards athletes. While the Athletic Department can either (a) stay out of the way or (b) help make aggregate funds of smaller donors and/or help match businesses with athletes, they're technically in the business of donations to themselves, primarily to fund upgrades in the facilities and the non-revenue sports.

Here's the truth - I don't think we have the alums to compete. We have plenty of deep pocketed donors but I think they're more interested in getting their names on buildings. I don't know that I see Steven Ross or his ilk putting hundreds of thousands of dollars or houses into any one athlete's hands to get him to come to Michigan. I don't know if we have people like that Ruiz character in Miami or all the Oil money alums at Texas A&M or the two mortgage morons at Sparty that are that sports crazy that they would turn over that kind of money to a kid.

Very honestly, I have two friends from my days at Michigan who are CRAZY wealthy (like F-U money, one who already stopped working and just invests in start ups at 50). Both have their names on things at Michigan including in the athletic department. I've talked about this with both. Both are not doing NIL. One said its a combination of insulting to him that the kids don't see the value of the school he loves and that he's turned off by what he describes as Free Agency with even fewer rules to bind the athletes. The second guy said "if I wanted to pay athletes I would have bought a minority interest in a pro sports franchise."

If we're going to compete for the kids with their hands out this is about a hundred or so Michigan alums/fans with wealth that 99.99% of us don't have being willing to part with significant sums of money to a bunch of 18 year olds who will take it and then the following year, say "what else do you have because USC is going to give me this..." I have yet to see or hear that we really have those people who care THAT much about football to buy in to those kinds of fights. I don't think the University President or even the Athletic Director will ever have influence enough to change that.

Is there any way that you could couple that with a who IS going to be on this team next year and what prayer do we have that they'll be any good. It feels like we lost half the team and most of the scoring.

1) That's pretty pathetic but it seems to follow a theme this Olympics of a lot of American athletes choking/failing.

2) Does this mean we get Brisson and Beniers back for this weekend's series? (Silver Lining?)

I'm not a big basketball guy so excuse my ignorance. Is this considered to be a weak draft year?

He's not totally wrong. We…

He's not totally wrong. We are the ONLY country in the world with college sports on this level.  Everywhere else in the world there are "Club" teams for sports and college teams are barely more than what we would call intramural. I'm not saying the players don't deserve what they're getting. I do wonder more and more whether its appropriate for Universities to be involved with this.

On a slightly related note…

On a slightly related note........how is it the Nittany Lion mascot in the picture above which appears to date back to the 1950's infinitely less creepy, more thought out and better constructed than that deranged sock puppet looking thing that's been running around for the last 30 years. I always thought there was some kind of historical context for why their mascot looks like a brown furry version of Ghostface from the Scream movies but apparently not.

Topps has to have an NCAA license to do that and they don't. They also don't have a contract with NFL or NBA or NHL so they don't do cards at all for those leagues. The other big brand (Panini) doesn't have a license with MLB so they do baseball cards without team names or logos on them.
