What astounding is that they have Michigan as 11th, OSU as 17th, MSU as 34th and Iowa as 38th. If they are right, and my cotton pickin' maize and blue heart hopes they are, then Michigan wins in a veritable cakewalk. I think the assumptions of this model are flawed, or this is the exact example of a way to early prediction.
|1 year 6 weeks ago||Bad Play by Play announcer||
In this list sadly I have to include Jim Brandstatter. I enjoy his color work, but as a play by play guy he always seem quite slow compared to the play. A pass will be completed and suddenly the guy is 25 yards down field... there is no way unless cheat mode is on that it happened the way he describes it.
I really have a hard time listening to Michigan Football on the radio anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love Brandy, his stories are great, and he and Dierdorff are two of the best reps for U of M football we could have, but really I just can't stand his play by play.

Wins... losses... they are important. That's why the team plays the games and we cheer with all our might. But, it's this that makes us Michigan and this is why the college game is more emotionally satifsfying than the pro game..
A coach coming out on a Tuesday evening in the middle of preparing for his first OSU game as a coach. A coach coming out with his Dad and speaking of his love for Bo Schembechler. Paying homage to these great michigan men.
A 5th year senior quarterback, in his first year at Michigan coming out after hearing about this, to join the walk, and then being privately walked through to understand the meaning.
In 25 years we will look back at this time and remember that we were fans, students and/or alumni, when Jim Harbaugh came back to Michigan and continued the tradition of Bo Schembechler.
I will be able to look back as a man of nearly 70, (hopefully) and be able to say I witnessed the greatness of Bo as a young man and as a student and then the greatness of Harbaugh as alumnus and I consider myself lucky to be able to sit back and enjoy this era of Michigan football.
I can't predict the future but I know that for the next however many years my pride in being a Michigan fan will never wane.

Either an curb-stomping of MSU, or a backbreaking last second loss for MSU, paired with a double digit targeting penalties on OSU defenders in the 2nd half, as they unleash 30 minutes of unnecessary roughness on Connor Cook and his replacements. The win causes the QB core of OSU to go out driving and drinking in which they are stopped by a police officer with a secret allegiance to U of M, who arrests them all, leading to a 1 game suspension.

Why do this now? Why not do an actual search? If they are going with Hackett, it seems that John U's take is right. Let's hope Hackett surprises many of us.

but, remember when he did all of those promotional things, he wasn't trying to fleece the season ticket holders and keep a streak alive.. he was building the "brand". So he did two things, he went out and hired the perfect michigan football coach, who had no ties to michigan.. (OMG, THE SHOCK, NOT A MICHIGAN MAN) and also tied that in with outstanding promotional things (advertising in Ladies Home Journal for example to get the original mgowife's involved) to build a brand. A brand of excitement and winning. That's the simple solution. Build a brand by winning and offering people a product that is commensurate with the price you are charging. That is a changing value proposition with HD TV's and wall to wall coverage on TV.

Mighty polite of you to practice abstinence in front of the home crowd at Notre Dame, Michigan offense. A classy farewell gesture if I do say so myself.
The good news is business school's only gonna look at your highest score, Michigan.
Michigan State's feeling some type of way right now. (Herpes is an emotion in East Lansing, right?)
Ease up there, Oregon. If destroying Michigan State in September was all it took to win a title, John L. Smith would be in the Hall of Fame.
|2 years 28 weeks ago||Not meaning to Troll||
But Notre Dame also instituted a new defensive scheme (4-3 now instead of a 3-4 like last year) with a new coach and 4 players missing from the defense for the Michigan game including a starting corner back and a defensive end who iirc was expected to play significant minutes. They relied upon 2 freshman defensive backs to play significant minutes.
Michigan's defense while new, is still utilizing the same DC, with presumably similar language, etc.
Sorry as noted below.. Clever Girl....
|2 years 28 weeks ago||Clever Girl||
Sorry, but I'm all in to that level of "panic" about this season. I think it was the lack of fight from the team that really got it for me. They just didn't seem to care. Or maybe it's me.
"Panic" is in quotes because of that last sentence. I question whether I care. As I noted in another post I've reached the point where I was with basketball circa Amaker. I'd go to a game or two.. shake my head at the complete lack of a cogent strategy. Laughingly shout out in the rather empty Crisler arena that Horton was open (while he was sitting on the bench) And then walk out and do something else... I don't think the program can be a success as currently ran, and I'm worried that the team will crater in a Big 10 that has 1 high quality team, 1 team that should be high quality but has some significant weakness now, and 12 teams all of middling to low quality.
So from an intellectual perspective it's Clever Girl, from my attitude it's "All major theme parks have delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked!

Now don't take this as a let's hire Les vote... for I don't see him coming.. .why would he?
|2 years 28 weeks ago||It's reached the point of MMB circa Ellerbee/Amaker||
For me that's where we're at. I love my University, however my give a damn is broke. The football team sucks, the coaching staff sucks, and there doesn't seem to be any "way forward" with the current group.
So where do I go, same place I went all those years ago in basketball. I spend my time and energy someplace else. I'll cheer, and hope, but the anger is basically gone, replaced with a sad apathy, and a shake of the head.
The only thing I have left is a hope that the next coaching hire will be a good one. An energetic up and comer who has had success elsewhere. If there is anything Beilein has proven it's that success breeds success. It's not the "brand" it's not the Michiganess of the coach, it's talent and hard work. It's not even youth... it's the ability to have a cogent plan and the ability to execute that plan. What is Hoke's plan? "We're michigan fergodsakes?" Really... that's not a plan that's at best a vision statement. (And a damn poor one).
Belien's plan is simple and straight forward. To recruit players that fit into a well designed offense/defensive strategy. To change the overall strategy to fit player talents at times, to coach up players from good to great and to constantly always be working to make the program better.
That is what is needed in football. Simple and straightforward. However, I'm not sure that the current regime (Brandon, etc.) can do that.

|3 years 11 weeks ago||Minor Leagues||
The NFL won't spend the money and they don't need to. The NBA might... but there's too much money in the NCAA tournament.
However it is the one easy way to fix the system. There is a reason there are generally few if any major scandals in baseball, hockey. There are functioning minor leagues that allow players who want to earn money to do so as well as the fact there is relatively little money or interest in the college versions of those sports. (Which explains the lack of scandals on the women's side of college sports, no interest/money). If you were to allow players to skip college and go to minor leagues the ones looking to get paid would gravitate there and would take a lot of the evil out of college sports.

Because by tying you are forcing the other team to have to do something to win.. you go for the almost given PAT... outcome is that you force the other team to do something to win 98+% of the time.
Go for the point conversion: unsure of the percentages but highest outcome.. force the other team to do something to win.. or they can sit on the ball.
I get it that the Michigan Defense wasn't stopping OSU.. but then again. help me if I'm wrong here. it was a tie game and I don't think there were any Michigan Defensive Touchdowns? So isn't it fairly obvious that the OSU defense wasn't stopping Michigan?

|3 years 19 weeks ago||It's not one play||
Or another play.. it is the amalgamation of plays which confounds us. Agreed that if Kerridge does x, the play works.. .however we've not seen Kerridge do x. In practice one can only assume if practice is run at full speed with a competent defense on the other side that Kerridge still can't do x.
Therefore, if Kerridge never shows the ability to do x, or the offensive line never shows the ability to block in a certain manner, how in the name of footbawl (misspelling intended) can you run that play if you know it has zero chance of success. (I know if it's executed it will, I buy that in the first couple games of the season. Run it out there... ) Yet we've just finished game 9 of the season. 75% complete (regular season) Quick question to the football coaches out there: At the 75% point of the season do you know what it is your team can and can't do on a regular basis? (I think the answer is obvious, but hey I could be wrong)
If you do, how can Borges not know? Hmmm 8 guys in box.. important play... hmmm maybe I should throw scissors here? Since the defense has rolled out sheets of paper 50 ft by 50 ft..... nah let's throw rock.
Someone above noted that the team is slow, no tempo. Yet Hoke says we practice tempo. Well if one assumes they practice tempo as well as they practice inverted veer, one assumes that the tempo is turtle like in it's efficiency.
So what's the solution? Next year's offensive line will be different, more experienced in the middle, but younger on the ends. The backfield will be more experienced, but who will teach them how to block. Gardner will be more experienced, but with the way he's moving backwards will that be better? Arrggggg. This is how it felt to look at the defense of RichRod's teams. Sure they'll be more experienced but they're not better. We all knew what the solution was then, but RichRod wouldn't make it. I think the same issue faces Hoke. We know what the solution is, will he make it... If he doesn't and the offense doesn't improve, or heaven forbid regresses further... next winter we'll see The Process II, Brandon's Last Stand.
|3 years 19 weeks ago||Execution||
Just as Brian says, yes the play call may be perfect if you assume your players can execute. However that is a incredible assumption. Assuming that Fitz can pass block like Vincent Smith is basically insane. He can't.. and at this point in his career I don't see that as a strenght that is going to be developed.
The problem is that if you could use computer to mask the uniforms of the defense I'm guessing each of these plays are going to be repeated over the coming weeks. Sure no defense is as good as MSU's (right... who have they yet faced... they may be good, but really with their competition who knows), but Nebraska's was gawd-awful against the run and Michigan moved them up in the rankings. Each and every defense is going to prepare using the template provided by MSU and Nebraska. If the offense doesn't adjust, it's going to continue to look the same.
Why does Borges not do these other things? Two answers come up to my mind, He's super stubborn, or he's deathly afraid of even worse things happening. I'm hopeful it's the former, rather than the latter. If it's the latter, wee... next year should be super fun!
|3 years 19 weeks ago||I agree and also wonder how||
I agree and also wonder how much this reminds folks of the defense under RichRod? In that instance you had coaches being forced to run a 3-3-5 or defenses they weren't good at. And we see what happened. Here you see Borges not being able to run his offense. Now sometimes coaches can adjust to this and change their philosophy. How much of the bad play calling may perhaps be tied to the fact that Borges is just mentally shot.
Also, in reference to play calling versus execution. As Brian said, at what point when the players rarely execute a play right should the staff realize that this play just won't work, no matter how often it gets called.
Finally, I'm reminded of Coach John McKay's quote during the 0-14 year of the Bucs. When asked about his team's execution he supposedly replied, "I'm all for it." I'm not sure if that was said, but in this time of coaches and bloggers talking about execution it does make me laugh.

And Michigan wins... does it change the idea that this team isn't really that good? I mean it's OSU and then Wisconsin/MSU and then ... blargh... Frankly I'm not even sure MSU is that good. The MSU defense still hasn't faced a decent offense. Frankly they haven't faced a decent defense.
Perhaps I'm just too depressed.
|3 years 19 weeks ago||Why do we care about impressiveness of the our wins this season?||
Honestly... won't that just put us in a bowl that we may not be qualified for... Don't get me wrong, I'm all for utilizing the extra practices.... I'd just rather not utilize them for a shelling at the hands of an SEC team that is vastly more qualified. Let Notre Dame and Minnesota devolve into a tire fire as well...
|3 years 20 weeks ago||It's not changing anytime soon.||
The coaching staff will stay the same for at least one more season. However that means that the results aren't chaning anytime soon.
So therefore I'm not going to be insane: I will expect the same results from this coaching staff. 3 road games against our biggest rivals next year. Weee.... that should be awesome!
As said above, Ah well.

|3 years 26 weeks ago||Actually I think they have accomplished something:||
In the article the writer notes that it was the wrong time to do this and now everyone will be wise.
Let's be honest here, this is really not the highest percentage fake out there. So here's my theory. On many punts going foward, the other team will spy on this. They will be looking at the gunner who doesn't gun as it were. They will be splitting their attention from the return a bit to defending the fake.
They pulled off this play at a time where if it fails nothing is lost.
I think that is some quality coaching and knowledge of the rules there. Plus one more thing: The rest of the teams they face will probably be trying to figure out when and what this team will pull out of the obsure rules hat in the future.

Would most of us do the same thing in the same situation? I don't know. I'm lucky enough to never have faced anything like this. But I would hazard a guess that we would be accepting that cash immediately.

Even if Weber doesn't call the timeout and Michigan scores the winning basket, it then gets yanked away due to the infractions. So it should be part of the overall FML bracket probably. That timeout only hurt at the time.
My nomination for the FML bracket, Michigan Winning the National Championship in 1989. Without that Bo doesn't hire Fisher.
Now before you destroy me, realize that I was a Freshman that year and winning that was the single greatest Sports event I have been any part of. I was even in the band the played at Crisler to welcome the team back. Happiest I've ever been with Michigan Sports.

Sadly, the way any team beats Michigan is to turn the game into a grab fest. Michigan is not coached in that style and as pointed out by Gottlieb, Louisville fouled on every shot. There is no way that an official is going to call that, and that style of play is very difficult for Michigan to respond to.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||A Bases Empty Grand Slam||
It's a Miracle!
|3 years 50 weeks ago||You all are more evolved than I am.||
Perhaps I'm a bit older.. been a fan longer than some, and a bit younger, less mature than others. Perhaps it's my make-up. If Michigan had lost by 25 I would have felt fine with the game. We would have been outclassed. But in losing by 6 measly points when there were so many places that it would've/could've been turned it hurts too much. Perhaps I'll remember this run fondly at some point, it's hard for me to know. My first experience was the run in 89 as a Freshman at Michigan. But before that were all the games with Joubert and friends in the mid-80's with the great TV coverage that we actually had back then. Then the runs in 92 and 93 which were fun at the time, but then devolved into pain. So much pain I would bring up the question to my friends. "Knowing that the win in 1989 directly led to the hiring of Steve Fisher, which at least indirectly led to the scandal, would you give up 1989?" Seriously, only now after seeing the program come back can I say, "Nah, 1989 was worth it.... Mostly."
I guess what I'm trying to say is that last night hurts way to much to me. Don't mistake my thought, I'm not saying that the team let me down, far from it. Their dedication and energy and joie de vivre is amazing. What hurts is what could have been. I mourn for them and feel badly for them. I feel for Nik and his emotion. I feel for the looks of agony on Trey's face as he got pummled over and over again. I feel for Levert stepping out of bounds having been pushed by Trey as a Louisville player landed on his back.
I was sharing this with my 10 year old. It's been 20 years since Michigan "appeared" in a final 4 and 24 since they appeared in one that still counts. I honestly feel that's probably not to far off. (Maybe it's the cynic in me) So I won't get ot share this one with my 11 year old or 12 year old son.. I might get to share it with a 30 year old, while I'm 60 something. It won't be even close. So I mourn for myself as well. Selfishly I'm sure, but there it is.
Finally I mourn just a bit for the gong show that is the NCAA. They could and should be so much more, but they aren't. So I mourn for my own stupidity in being drawn in. I wish I could have kept a distance, I wish I could have just thought logically and realized that there will be that team that makes the adjustment and beats/pounds/hacks and grabs the Woverines who are a finese team in a group of WWE Wrestlers that Jim Nantz, et al, call tough ball players. Congrats to Louisville, they were that team.
I don't know if this means anything, but if nothing else it's 5 minutes of free therapy.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||Perhaps||
What was worse was the solid cross check by Dieng on Spike that was considered a screen. Heck I thought we learned from the Nix foul at the end of the season that the flagrant -1 foul was called when the fouler outweiged the foulee by 100 pounds. We can't even count on that I guess.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||The worst part is...||
That we've become so used to the Big Ten/NCAA thugish style play we accept it just like the officials did. If they had whistled the Cardinals for everything the game would have taken more than 2.5 hours. They didn't so once again Michigan struggled with the physicality. When you can't hang with a team start beating them up. Great adjustment by the Cardinals honestly. Play what's given you. Burke is gone, and frankly I don't blame him. Why not get paid to absorb this kind of punishment. I think Hardaway is gone as well. His "potential" isn't going to be any higher. (Since much of the draft is based on potential seemingly.)
I think they should just go all James Caan and play the game with out rules. It might be fairer that way.
Blah... enough of this crap back to work. Screw the tournament and screw the NCAA gong show.
Thanks team, you gave your all and that's all we could ask for.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||I was in school||
I was in school for the last official one as well as both of the redacted appearances. I was a freshman in 1988-89. Is there any better time to expeience this than as a Freshman? I watched the championship game in Frank and Curtis' room on 2nd Hamilton (Home of the Human Pile, don't ask) in Bursley. Then the next day I went out and bought my gear and was part of the quickly assembled band to welcome the team back to Crisler. (As the Basketball band was on the plane and we wanted to welcome the team back as soon as the team arrived at Crisler)
For 92 and 93 I was in year 4 and 5 of the education and living in the Bait's houses. I understood that Webber wasn't coming back after the 93 game. It was fun to watch that team, but you knew that it was different, they had changed the game.
I didn't know that would be it at the time. 3 final 4's in 5 years can make you a bit jaded. Of course I didn't know that Michigan was on it's way into a pit of despair.
Now I'm 42 with a son who is watching the games with me. I made it to a game earlier this season and was blown away by the arena. (So much better than when I was there). Anything that the team gets this weekend will be gravy for me after the last 20 years. I watch this team and am proud that they are representatives of Michigan. I love their work ethic, their attitudes and the coaching staff.
This has been a fun run and I believe that there will be more. I believe in Coach Beilein.

1. Number of Players in Rehab: How does the number of players in rehab after their playing days tie directly to players in trouble?
2. Kicking off Players who took money: Okay, but if they hadn't lied to him about it, wouldn't they have had to be kicked off due to NCAA rules, or at least part of the NCAA's rather nebulous punishment policy. If the NCAA handled punishments for criminal activities (more regularly that is) then I believe this would be a valid point.
3. AFAWK, Clark didn't lie. AFASWK, Clark did steal a laptop. He was caught. The case has been adjudicated. That's what we know. Hoke doesn't owe us more, but I don't owe him the benefit of the doubt that his decision is correct either. (And I'm sure he doesn't care, yet if his caring was what was necessary for posting on Mgoblog, I'm guessing Brian would be working as an engineer someplace)
4. I don't know if Harbaugh was steered out of being a history major or not. We don't have two people agreeing to it, only one as far as I know. In my story, all parties agreed that it happend, from Bo, to Harbaugh, to the police. Therefore I think it's fairly safe to assume it happened.
5. You are right. (re other schools) That is a poor reason to offer for a different punishment. I was wrong. (That doesn't happen often does it)
My question at the end of this is this: Do you feel proud of how Brady Hoke has handled this? I don't. Simple as that. That and a 1.06 will get you a pop at McD's.
However I want to be proud of the U of M coaches' actions at all times. I'm not stupid enough to believe that the players will be perfect. They weren't perfect back then, and maybe Bo was able to hush things up. Honestly, you're right, I have no proof one way or the other. But in today's world we have proof. In the end, I want the men and women who wear the uniform of my school to have earned the honor to wear it. If they haven't I'd rather not have them wearing that uniform.
|4 years 27 weeks ago||Agree with the State's Actions||
I agree with you that the youthful perpetrators act is right. Of course I don't think many of us who feel that the suspension should be longer disagree with you. We just want and expect that the young man would suffer a longer suspension from the team. There are two huge differences there. He's still a member of the team, he's just not an active member. I don't think the should be kicked out of school. He should still have his scholarship, still be able to workout, he just shouldn't be dressing for the game. That's simple.
The difference is that being a member of the team is an honor. One shouldn't keep honors when one behaves dishonorably. Does anyone believe that Clark behaved honorably. Disregard his age. 17 is old enough to know better. You even admit you are shamed by your actions. You've become a better person. Does Clark need to be a playing member of the team to be a better person. If that's the case what happens in 4 years? Perhaps he would do better to learn now what thousands of prior college football players have learned, and that's how to be that better person while your just a normal member of society.
I agree it's Hoke's decision. Just because it's someone's decision, doesn't mean it's the right decision, or right for me, or even able to be argued as being ethically correct. Ethics is often defined as the collective morals. I'm not sure I belong to the collective that thinks that the honor of playing college football or being part of any extracurricular activity is nearly automatically granted.
|4 years 27 weeks ago||I will deal with it||
I have dealt with it. Thanks for the addition to the posting. You're right, we don't know any facts. That is because Ft. Schembechler has been re-instated at least as it relates to dealing with the media. Of course some of that could be accepted in the past because you knew, (see Harbaugh story above) that there would be zero tolerance for this kind of activity. Let me ask those of you old enough to remember when Bo was coach; Do you think he would have put up with this. But perhaps I'm just old and out of touch. So be it. I've dealt with it. While I'm a fan and still proclaim it, I'll be a little quieter now, and when Dantonio or Meyer do something I find a bit questionable ethically I'll just keep the ol' mouth closed and let it go, because I'm sure they're closer to the situation and know how to keep the young men closer to them so they can have a postive effect on the young men.
Neg away boys. That's how you deal with it.
|4 years 27 weeks ago||I'm Reminded of Bo's Handling of Situations like this||
I remember that Jim Harbaugh was kicked off of the team for showing up on a police report for a party. He was let back on the team after he proved that he was not doing anything wrong and got the AA police to agree to that. (IIRC)
I think my problem is that the punishment seems so minimal. It's an honor to play football for Michigan. How many of us on this board would give up a lot if we had the talent to do that and the opportunity. (I didn't have a scintilla of the former, so the latter never came up either.)
It may be up to Hoke, but wouldn't a better message be sent by a more stringent suspension? I don't mean to cut the young man at the knees, but I do think something stronger than one game should be done.
I guess that makes me a hard hearted person, but I'd rather think it would teach the young man a better lesson if he lost more than one game for doing something like this.

Good job to all on this. Mr. Carr and Mr. Brandon are but some representatives of the university. The statement of Hollis seems to be aimed at the "punch". For how can one look at the totality of the play is we're looking at the Denard helmet twist.
How much do we bet that the Helmet twist, which is quite frankly the far worse play is going to be overlooked. The focus will be on the punch and only the punch.
I hope I'm wrong.
|5 years 23 weeks ago||Me neither||
Hell I was listening to 107.3 this morning, the announcers had on Dantonio and he was suggesting that perhaps the refs were a little quick to throw the flags.
We know he's not going to do anything.
I don't think Delaney will either.
Perhaps MSU is channeling James Caan from Rollerball here!
|5 years 23 weeks ago||I hope you're right||
but somehow it seems like MSU just gets away with this crap all the time. Additionally, I think if we're to suspend players 5 games for selling something that they own, how the heck can we not do something similar that has an acutal intent to hurt someone.
I've been thinking about that all day on Sunday. Trust me I hate OSU (U of M '93 BA Econ) but in my mind the only injury by the OSU players is to the broken ideal of amatuerism. However the MSU players played with an intent to cause injury after the whistle (important difference here) the entire game. And the coaching staff noted this was true. (Narduzzi: "60 minutes of unnecssary roughness." Hell the only thing missing was Dantonio screaming sweep the leg!
However, given that... the hyporcrisy that is the Big 10 and the NCAA will probably just sweep this under the rug. Look at all of the local media, is there anyone locally who is writing about this?

about games being taken away. They will only care that the NCAA is seemingly going to let them off with only a wrist slap. The rest of the college teams will then build nice firewalls around their AD's and will let the rampant cheating begin.
On a related topic... does anyone think Dantonio talking about Tressel as a tragic hero is him trying to ingratiate himself with OSU? I can't see it working, but I really can't see why he would say something like that for any other reason.

Seeing Hoke and company really put the hammer down in Michigan is nice. Winning all of these recruiting battles really does a lot to settle down the talk from the Sparties. Hopefully this will translate well in the coming seasons.
|5 years 44 weeks ago||NCAA isn't addressing the bowl issue...||
They're probably not going to address the oversigning issue. Too much money floating around. It will take extreme pressure from the BCS conferences or pressure in the form of laws or lawsuits.
|5 years 48 weeks ago||Wow, thank goodness for some of the later posts||
As I read some of the earlier ones I was feeling very old... Here are top 6
1. Detroit Tigers v. New York Yankess, August 11, 1982: My first ball game at Tiger Stadium. I attended with my family including my grandfather who saw his first game in 1926, Cobb's last season with the Tigers. The Tigers won 3-2 in 12 innings. It was Morris v. Righetti and Morris went 11 freakin' innings. Wow.
2. Detroit Tigers v. Kansas City Royals, September 26, 1999. My last ball game at Tiger Stadium. I attended with my my Wife and Grandfather and my Dad. I cried leaving the stadium that day. I barely remember the game other than the fact the Tigers won, and as I walked out the stadium, the main entrance. (We parked at the Checker cab company parking lot) I looked back at the stadium and the sun was just over the top of the stadium shining into my face slowly sinking down. My grandpa and I went to several more games over the years at Comerica, but it wasn't the same to me. He passed in 2005 I haven't been back since, someday I will, but not yet.
3. University of Michigan v ND, 1991. The catch. 'nuff said.
4. U of M v Maryland, 1990. Meaningless game, cept I got to go with my Grandpa. That was before they got so rough with non-students using student tickets. Great stories about Crazy Legs Hirsch whom Grandpa saw at the stadium.
5. U of M v U of M, 1988. Ugg, it's here cuz it was my first game at the Big House. As a Freshman reserve in the MMB. I sat there as the crowd was chanting overrated to the Hurricanes saying quietly under my breath.. it's to early.. it's to early. Anyone who was there and sober remembers that 4th quarter. It's the stuff of nightmares.
6. U of M v U of W, August 31, 2002. Woo, I stayed until the end, and boy was I glad I did. Brabbs misses the first two then nails the third for the victory.. Yes!
There are so many others that jumble together, both good and bad.

Great game Hunwick, God Bless your cotton pickin' tiny maize and blue body!
|6 years 1 week ago||Ticket Prices||
In a word Wow... That's near NFL prices, or more if you look at the nose bleed seats.
Well I guess that's what the market will bear, but I admit it's too much for my pocket book when you factor in gas, parking, and food. You can see the game better at home on the big screen.
I guess I'm getting old. That's cool. I'll cheer from home, somebody has to do it!
|6 years 1 week ago||Careful, they'll call you a Spartan Slappy||
They did me for a similar comment. I completely agree. I was a student from 88-93 so I saw the entire thing. When I was there I loved the Fab 5. I was young. As time went on and the facts came out I started hating it more and more. And then as the university hired Coach B., and the team started growing stronger my feelings became calmer. However seeing that movie Sunday night just brought it all back, and not in a good way. Good riddance to the whole idea. That shouldn't be college sports.
Jalen says that no one remembers the NCAA champs from 3 or 5 or 7 years ago. But everyone remembers the Fab 5. Well Mr. Rose just because you're remembered doesn't mean you were right. People often remember the notorious.
|6 years 1 week ago||Geaux||
No Geaux, I'm actually a U of M grad, class of 93. I lived in Bursley 2nd floor Hamilton for 2 years, then Ziwet house Baits for 3 years. I was a member of the U of M marching band under Eric Becker. I enjoyed it when we went and played for the football team during our "hell weeK" and then Bo spoke to us after we played. I played in the band that welcomed back the 89 national champions at Crisler. I was awed when Bo brought the football team in from Spring Practice into Crisler and the players in pads kneeled down in the rows. They were doing it so people could see but it still looked really cool. I graduated with a degree in Economics that I'm damn proud of.
I was there when Desmond caught the pass on 4th down, sitting near the 25 yard line on same end of the field opposite side (since that was where students sat back then). I was there in 1990 when Desmond was tripped in the end zone sitting on the 10 yard line.
So no I'm not an MSU slappy. I hate the g-damn Spartans and the angry midget, the great Saint Dantonio and everything else to do with that hole in E. Lansing. I've loved the U of M since I was about 5 years of age. Hell I remember listening to the football games with Ufer on a crappy little transitor radio. However I know that if you don't wish to believe me you'll call bullshit on what I typed. So be it. Have a good one.
|6 years 1 week ago||Thanks!||
Hey thanks alot! But I hope Sir that you never post that you think the Spartans are thugs or that OSU is wrong with unis for Tats cuz, between Howard, Webber and Rose we can't really say boo about a few things like that.
I on the other hand think that those gentleman were way out of control.
PS to the gentleman below... I don't have a problem with players having Tats, I have a problem with players not acting with some class. Rubbing your butt on the Spartan S? That's not classy that's crap. I don't mind talking on the court to some amount. As noted I don't give a rip roaring hell about tats, (I just mentioned the OSU tats for unis in comparision to over $250,000 for Webber and Rose)
So if that makes me a dipshit, well I'll take it and run with it. Just please Mr. Hogan and Mr. Huma don't make any negative comments on others not acting classy or taking inappropriate benefits if you both think that we should have a "Fab Five" brand.
|6 years 1 week ago||OMG||
Wow, I'll represent some of the older fans. I was a student from 88-93 so I saw the whole thing on Campus.
A Fab Five brand? Jesus Tap Dancing Christ! Are you serious. No, no Fab Five Brand, no Fab Five anything. Let's stay as far away from that crap as possible. We're not, just now starting to come out of the desert of an outcome that was the Fab Five and the other "wonderful" recruits.
We tut tut the MSU players for being thugs. What the hell were those guys? We can't have it both ways. I didn't see the whole movie last night, but do we remember when Juwan rubbed his ass on the "S" at MSU? Wow, stay classy Wolverines, stay classy. We laugh at OSU for trading unis for tats. Wow, C-Webb a quarter mil. and Jalen, 30K, wow stay classy Wolverines, stay classy.
No, no fab five. Michigan is better than that. I hope we're better than that.
|6 years 1 week ago||Webber-Poor Conditions||
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Webber father, worked for GM in a factory as a Plant Foreman I believe, and Webber's mom was a teacher, yes? Let's compare and contrast that to my family, (I went to U of M from 88-93, so I think my years compare favorably). My father was a skilled tradesman for GM, my Mother was a stay at home mom. My parents put me through college. Chris's didn't. Yet I'm supposed to cry a river for this guy? What? I call bullshit on that. I have for over 15 years now. Jalen came from poor circumstances, Chris or Mayce or whatever name he wants to call himself didn't. So take that mamby pamby crap elsewhere.
|6 years 2 weeks ago||That's a good idea||
However I wonder how much the rugby issue is because while rugby player are great ateletes they are not at the level of the best football players in terms of speed and size. Therefore they can't generate the same level of power and thus aren't as much at risk for the devestating injuries. That's a supposition only, but I would like to think that if my assumptions are correct the overall idea is correct as well.
One thing I know, my son isn't going to play football. People will mock me for that, but that's okay.
|6 years 2 weeks ago||That's a good question||
The next question is this... how much longer will Football be allowed to go on? A basic understanding of physics calls into quesiton any attempt to try and fully protect the brain. It's a simple case of momentum (for lack of a better term) or inertia. The brain is moving one direction at x speed, then the case carrying it (the skull) stops moving suddenly, the brain keeps going until it stops, (hits the skull). There isn't any way outside of a Star Trekian inertial damper system to stop that from occurring. Therefore brain damage will occur when people are sufficiently fast and big.
At some time people are going to sue and I don't think High Schools will be able to handle that risk. Kids and parents sign of on the liability, but I believe that there is case law which has rendered the sign-off moot as the judges have stated that parents can't sign off on the liablity as they don't understand it.

It wasn't George Bush he was considering it was Charlie Sheen:
""I'm tired of pretending I'm not a bitchin' rock star from Mars."
"My success rate is 100 percent. Do the math."
See that fits so much better... or finally:
"We beg for nothing! Beggars beg, winners win! Period. The End. Suck it. Didn't make the rules."

Jeez, age sucks, you're right I was thinking MDen.. not the Moe's... didn't read the op's post correctly.
I still think that Albom was with Webber w hen it happened, and I bet Webber did say that it was awful having to scrounge up some money. Remember Webber's the same guy who screamed "You come to the ghetto to only recruit me..." Right Chris Webber, in the Ghetto. Much like Elvis was in the great late 60's movie.
Webber was a liar and a cheat. The rest of the Fab 5 seemingly weren't. At the end that's what I'll remember...
|6 years 3 weeks ago||Great story||
Honest question here, for those that remember it... At the end of 1993, with the stories that came out about Jalen hanging out at a "crack" house, etc, if there had been a poll, "Guy most likely to be universally respected" between Rose and Webber who would have went with Rose? Jeez the guy had a nice career, and is now a respected analyst. Webber well he's tried being an analyst, most of the stops on his career he was a malcontent, and then there's that whole perjury thing.
I'm not surprised at the end with your story. Truth is over the years my respect for Rose has went up a great deal. He and Juwan are my favorites of the Fab 5.
|6 years 3 weeks ago||You're Right||
If memory serves that is the sports store that Mr. Webber talks about in the Albom book. The scene where he is "scrounging" for enough money to buy a big mac at McD's and across the street he can see "his" jersey being sold for what seemed at the time a rather high sum.
Of course now we know that he was lying through his teeth since I'm not sure how someone who got that kind of cash from Mr. Martin could have been searching for a nickel or two to afford a big mac.
Effect on me. I was a student from the fall of 88 to the spring of 93. So I saw the national championship as well. 4 of the Fab 5 were awesome, no complaints with them. I really dislike Chris Webber for taking the money and Steve Fisher for looking the other way. There were good times, but now that time is colored by the lasting impact it has had on Michigan basketball. Almost 20 years on and Michigan is still recovering. Nothing is worth the years in the wildnerness that the program and it's fans have been through.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||In the words of Brady Hoke...||

that MSU is really down and we may just present a matchup problem to PSU? I like the way this team is improving, however I think they are an NIT team that can get some good experience moving forward.
|6 years 8 weeks ago||Score||
I think Coach Izzo (aka Angry MIdget) will have the Sparties fired up big time. I think they take out their frustrations on the young wolverines and beat them by 20. 75-55.
To be sure I also predicted the Patriots versus the Falcons in the Superbowl. May all of my predictions continue to be as right.

Thanks for the hard work. I hope it works out for you in the end.
|6 years 9 weeks ago||Brian's fine||
Not that he needs defending, but Brian would be the first one to note that there are several offensive styles, executed properly which can be successful. It wasn't the spread and shred that was as important switch as the hoped for switch to a more killer instinct based attack, wherein we don't sit there with a 7-10 pt lead and expect to just "protect the lead".
When Michigan finally unleashed the hounds versus Florida in that last bowl game for Carr we finally saw what it was that we all wanted. A kill kill kill attack that never let up. If it hadn't been for Hart's very unusual 2 fumbles that game would have been a blow out of unbelievable proportions.
So Brian's feeling fine. Let's hope that Hoke "unleashes the hounds" and doesn't just sit there on the 7 pt lead going into the 4th quarter and we all start popping antacids at an alarming rate.
|6 years 9 weeks ago||Let's all just||

speech patterns have been captured and cloned onto Brady Hoke in a strange experiment from the 90's that no one told us about... It's Tremendous.
|6 years 10 weeks ago||It's not the cube that starts the University Everyday||
but rather the beating of Fred Jackson's heart.
|6 years 10 weeks ago||Hoke's Record||
7 of his 9 wins this year were against teams with losing records in a crappy conference with one great team, and one team that seemed good until it got run out of the stadium two straight weeks. Run that around your head for a couple of minutes. His record is flimsy. 12-1 at Ball State... woopdee doo. What was his follow-up. How did he do the next year? Hmmm. He left while the leaving was good. We have no idea what he'll do with success.
That's not to say that he won't be successful. But as Brandon should know from running a large corporation, you don't take a flyer with a man with no upside. What's the great upside to Brady Hoke? That he has passion. If I hear one more time he has passion I think my head will asplode! Lot's of people have passion. Now if you take a flyer on someone who is a well known co-ordiantor, sometimes it can work out and the risk is there.
This was a basically riskless decision, made so late as to kill Hoke's chances at having a decent recruiting class. Hell Brandon screwed Hoke. Let's count the people Brandon screwed by waiting. Isn't it wonderful that Brandon knows AD'ing so well as to do it completely differently than the rest of college football.
Finally as to the Michigan man thing... How many who are applauding the "Michigan Man" return are actually Michigan Men themselves. I hate the term walmart wolverine, but my guess is there's lots of 'em who are really glad a Michigan Man is back at the helm.
At the end like Brian noted, let's hope it works, cuz we all love Michigan. If it doesn't, let's pray that before Hoke is let go, Brandon is canned and we actually have a good search for an AD. One who actually has been an AD elsewhere and who has a good network of relationships built up in college athletics. Something tells me if we spent more time on developing the Athletic Department administration, we'd have less problems with coaches!
|6 years 10 weeks ago||Tempering Enthusiasm||
I have to agree that the support being thrown Hoke's way astounds me, and makes me question whether I'm looking at the same things that are out there. Then I read Brian's write-up and it makes me actually feel better.
I support Coach Hoke. I believe that the hiring process was so incredibly fouled up as to really cause one to question how Brandon was the CEO of a major organization. I also believe that many out there have really high expectations for Coach Hoke. I don't see the schedule being that much easier than this year really. I think that 5 wins is probably doable, but I'm not sure about more than that. And then the next years after that will be tougher as well as this recruiting classes flaws become more apparent.
So part of what Brian is doing is an analysis of who is coming in. Hopefully you all are reading them. Let them temper your expectations. Hoke has great passion, but hasn't coached in a top conference at a level higher than a line coach. As a head coach he has never dominated that conference for more than 1 season. (This is in argument to the Tressel record, I think we all agree that Tressel was a winner at Youngstown State for more than one year.)
This has rambled and I apologize. However, Brian is pointing out relevant facts about the staff that apparently is coming in along with facts about the hiring process. Many supporting Coach Hoke are highlighting how his speech makes you feel. So when football is about running through brick walls with no pads, then Hoke's passion will be more important. But as I see it, that passion is only one aspect of a successful program. The other aspect is a strong system that allows the atheletes you have in place to succeed and hopefully dominate the other teams they face. That aspect is what people like Brian are questioning, and I hope he keeps it up.
|6 years 10 weeks ago||Passion||
Okay I get the passion. But my question is this... don't we all have a ton of passion. Does that qualify us to be coach. Brian has a ton of passion. So let's make him coach...
Passion plus lack of coaching equals... fans... We know Hoke is a fan of Michigan. No new info here.
|6 years 10 weeks ago||Look at the schedule||
This is thinking that the offense is reset to pro-style.
Sept. 3 WESTERN MICHIGAN Win, probably. Though Western was pretty young this year, this could be an upset special.
Sept. 10 NOTRE DAME Loss, I know it's at home but Brian Kelley will have that team ready.
Sept. 17 EASTERN MICHIGAN Win, we will have won the Washtenaw County Championship.
Sept. 24 SAN DIEGO STATE Win, though it'll be fun.
Oct. 1 MINNESOTA* Win
Oct. 8 at Northwestern* Loss Could be a win, but it is Michigan's first away game, always tough.
Oct. 15 at Michigan State* Loss MSU has some losses on defense and O-line, but the most of the rest of their offense will be one year better including the running backs, and you know that Dantonio will want to grind his heel into Hoke.
Oct. 22 Bye Week
Oct. 29 PURDUE* (HC) Win? This was an ugly game in West Lafayette, and Purdue probably won't be hit by as many injuries this year.
Nov. 5 at Iowa* Loss
Nov. 12 at Illinois* Loss Payback for this year.
Nov. 19 NEBRASKA* Big Loss.
Nov. 26 OHIO STATE* Huge Loss
So that's 5-7. I don't see four games that switch there, maybe 2 Illinois and Northwestern, but that's it. Even though we're returning starters if our QB is Devin, (and I just can't see Denard running a pro-style offense) that means we have a red-shirt Freshman QB running the show, and it's a show where nobody else on the field has any more experience than he does. Those are ugly shows. Defensively we're returning many players, but again, in a show that they don't know. So let's not try and say 9-3. 9-3 is a fairy tale as no matter what was done the Neb and OSU games are almost guaranteed losses, which would leave it to Hoke to go 9-1 the rest of the season. Games against MSU and Iowa argue that's impossible, and Notre Dame as I noted will be that much better next year.
