Definitely attend a game if you have the opportunity. Two years ago, the Salt Lake City alumni drove into the heart of darkness of Utah County/Provo to watch the then ranked #2 Michigan squad beat the then ranked #1 BYU Cougars on their way to the national championship. We even managed to have a proper Michigan tailgate on the BYU campus. Between the athletes' parents and those of us from Salt Lake City, we managed to turn an away game into a neutral field I'd like to think. (Lacrosse is huge at BYU and in Utah; I'd like to think that the crowd was a slight Michigan lean, at least on a decibel level.) The athletes and coaches went out of their way to thank us, but we were the ones thankful and most appreciative of the athletes' and coaches' dedication, effort and victory over BYU, which, at least if you live in Utah, ranks only behind victories over OSU and MSU.

So, go and cheer, it's a terrific game and an outstanding program. We look forward to cheering the team on again next Saturday against BYU. Go Blue!

2 years 26 weeks ago Thanks...

I was at the IR-GER game with all the Irish lads (one literally ditched his wife and kids for 3 weeks - he was supposed to return after one week - and another who carried a 5-ft tall stuffed Kermit the Frog with him around the world) and everyone hoping, praying, and singing to Niall Quinn, with his pants up to his chin, expecting disappointment but anxiously holding out, with the unexpected rush of exhilaration at Keane's goal. Good memories.

I hope for the same rush after an unexpected victory this weekend, as unlikely as that might be, and regret that I won't be in AA for the game.

Bravo.

Quantum physics, math and football...it's as if Adam Felber wrote a sporting sequel to Schrodinger's Ball. Awesome.

2 years 37 weeks ago FWIW

I asked the girlfriend, a journalist, her thought on the Rosenberg piece. Mind you, as a non-UM grad who believes football teams serve merely as the opener to the band at halftime and enjoys football Saturdays only for the macadamia pancakes at the pub, she sided with Chait and said that having an openly antagonistic columnist write the piece was sketchy and only served to discredit whatever merit the article might have had. (She had several other beefs with the article, but was far less harsh than I thought it desereved.)

2 years 38 weeks ago Great investigation and follow-up

Brian et al. -

Thanks for the hard and quick work debunking the Freep "article." I deliberately read the article first before following up with your coverage and you've identified and answered all of the immediate questions that I had about the article, namely context and the actual rules. It motivated me to donate to your cause - I hope you buy yourself and everyone else involved at least several pitchers of beer with it. I urge others to donate, too, so Brian can continue to afford to hold the Freep's feet to the fire.

2 years 41 weeks ago Not bad. And the expressed legal concerns are overblown

vis-a-vis Lucas. Definitely fair use, you've added something significantly creative to the design, and are using it for speech/commentary. Now, having said that, Lucas has more money than God and can use it to bleed anyone dry regardless of the merits (or lack thereof) of the legal claim. But, if that's the case, I (and probably others) would be interested in handling it pro bono.

Intermountain IP attorney.

3 years 25 weeks ago "so the conclusion is they wish a short-term burst of attention"

Absolutely correct. I've several friends who are journalists in this state's paper of record and they regularly decry the out of context and over the top headlines that the headline writers (yep, there are separate headline writers, most journalists don't write their own headlines) create in an effort to drive clicks and web views that generate revenue.
