I'm a lifelong Tigers fan, but I was living in San Francisco that year and was an A's season ticket holder. Coming into September, a Detroit-Oakland postseason matchup seemed likely, but the A's collapsed down the stretch -- although, on the plus side, the Tigers had an amazing rally in the last week to beat out Toronto. And then, of course, the Tigers lost in the playoffs to a mediocre Minnesota team. What could have been . . . .

You haven't said what Michigan has offered Babcock. I tell you, IT'S HAPPENING!!!

This argument in favor of the play-in game rests on a faulty premise -- namely, that there was a good reason in the first place for adding a second wild card team. Once you've added that second team, I'd agree that it would be a bad idea to extend the playoffs (and ice the division winners) with an extended wild card series. But one wild card team was enough, if you ask me -- it rewards a team with a good regular season that nonetheless failed to win its division, but it's unnecessary to reward more than one such team, especially when one wild card produces an optimal four-team playoff scheme.

The key -- and I cannot stress this enough -- is that you must first fetch your backend. Without that, all the varnish in the world won't save your cache server.

And here I thought you were going to offer some scientific data showing that OT posting has a genetic basis. In that case, I would've proposed that "DISCUSS Boy" be preemptively barred from creating an account on this site.

The randomness of MLB playoffs is more tolerable to me than, say, NHL playoffs because the teams that make the playoffs have proved their worth over a long season. And precisely because of that lengthy season and the difficulty of making the playoffs in baseball, I could not agree more that a single play-in game at the end of the season is the worst idea ever in professional sports.

Back in the day, you could get into the stadium any time -- it used to be part of my usual running route, not to mention an occasional late-night destination.

I'm convinced that the "Bro" is a trolling account set up by Brian/Seth/Ace/BiSB for our entertainment. This comment is priceless: "I'm just not a believer" in numbers/factual stuff.

"NCAA hits OSU" . . . perhaps a gentle tap with a rolled-up newspaper (SI magazine?) would be a more accurate characterization? But hey, let's not forget that hefty $8,500 in fines -- that should just about cover about a day's worth of the attorney fees racked up in the 13-month investigation.

I'm just spitballing here, but for the champion of the Michigan hockey tournament, maybe the trophy could be . . . wait for it . . . a 40-pound bronze cast of Red Berenson's head?

So now you've abandoned your claim that your posts were not insulting to the recruit in question, and instead you're saying we should insult the recruits to weed out the "sensitive" ones? Rather than speculating about the sensitivity of recruits, how about if we focus on our own behavior as -- giving us all the benefit of the doubt -- mature, responsible adults deciding whether to pass (anonymous and unaccountable) judgment on a high school kid's ability to play football despite our lack of information and qualifications to do so?

I was questioning myself for continuing to read past the first page of comments, but I'm sure glad I did. Congratulations and good luck to your sons for their opportunity to add to their dad's Michigan football legacy, and best wishes for their success in the classroom and on the field!

The only product on offer to Michigan fans was a crappy one -- a Thursday night game at the Joe that was, at best, a stepping stone to increasingly less crappy products. I certainly agree with you that games at Yost would be vastly superior to any of the products being offered this weekend.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Calling out the fans||
I happened to catch some of yesterday's game on the radio and Al Randall was doing his best Matt Shepherd impression, also calling out the fans without acknowledging the crappy product on offer. He recognized that it was a weekday evening, and that many fans were probably figuring they'd prefer to go to Friday's game (weekend, better matchup), but he then pointed out that for Michigan, there might not BE a Friday game unless they beat Wisconsin.
With all due respect, Al, that was a very dumb argument. You're saying I should have gone to last night's game to see Michigan play a horrible team -- and, by the way, Wisconsin fans will travel, but they didn't for last night's game because it's a weekday, the relatively meaningless first of three nights and, again, their team is horrible -- because Michigan might LOSE to said horrible team and that would be my last chance to see them? Uh, why would I want to see that? The only possible value of last night's game was to win and survive to play a better opponent with higher stakes -- thanks, I think I'll choose tonight's game. Drawing conclusions about a fan base from last night's turnout is just -- well, not a good use of one's powers of reasoning.

Purdue's athletic department is giving less money back to the university than it has in the past. But the real point is that it's totally arbitrary -- it's logged as an expense for "internal services," without any reason to believe that the amount being shifted from the AD to the university actually correlates to actual expenses. The point of the linked article is that you can't reliably use numbers reported by an athletic department to say anything useful about the economics of college athletics.

of Michigan not making the NCAA tournament, I guess -- I won't be watching as much, and won't have to hear as much from Bill Raftery. I could agree that he's better than some (or maybe even most), but that would still be damning with faint praise. A friend once pointed out his vocal tics (the worst being a different voice he breaks out to tell you something exciting has happened -- which would be more effective if he didn't use this voice 50 times a game), and now I can't listen to him without these mannerisms driving me crazy. Maybe CBS is giving him this year's Final Four as a retirement gift -- I can dream, can't I . . . .
