With an injured Gardner and Wile in for Gibbons? I think it was the right call. And based on this thread and my Facebook feed, that seems to be the majority opinion.
Shame it didn't work, but it was a hell of a game. This is the best I've felt after a Michigan loss in a long, long time.

You're probably right.
But on the other hand, we'd probably have lost by even more because old-school Michigan never went for quarterbacks that could run like Denard and Devin can.
Most of my time at Michigan was with Carr as a head coach, and the one thing I hated more than anything in those games was when the play calling was:
10 RUN BALL UP MIDDLE
...no matter what. The single biggest disappointment about today's game, for me, is that we returned to exactly that for the second half of the game.
Smith didn't make 2.5 yards per carry. Rawls didn't even make half a yard on average. At some point, when things aren't working, you need to try something else.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||When RichRod was fired,||
When RichRod was fired, people wanted a return to the Michigan of old.
Looks to me like that's exactly what we got.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Did you stop to consider that||
Did you stop to consider that "our offense is going downhill" because our starting quarterback can't throw the ball and our starting running back has a broken leg? Those MIGHT have played a factor. Doesn't excuse the play calling in the second half, but it's not like a different offensive coordinator could have kept those injuries from happening.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Michigan lost four times this||
Michigan lost four times this year.
The first was to Alabama, currently #2 in the nation.
The second was to Notre Dame, currently #1.
The third was to Nebraska, who is #14, is 9-2 and is likely going to win the Big Ten championship game.
The fourth is OSU, who would probably be #3 in the nation if they were eligible to be.
Take a step back from the ledge. We lost to damn good teams. I'm not happy about today's game or Borges right now, but this season wasn't the trainwreck some of you are making it out to be. Could it have gone better? Yes. But we're still far, FAR ahead from the 3-8 disaster of a season that we had my senior year at Michigan.
Besides: we still get to go to a bowl game. OSU doesn't. :D

What is there to say? Even with the exttra help from the blown possession call with about forty seconds left, we couldn't put it away. Ohio played well, and did so for the entire game. They earned it.

Sort of close. It's a parody of Community, one of NBC's half hour comedies that airs on Thursday nights.
By the way: Community has amazingly strong writing and acting, and is consistently hilarious. I recommend it wholeheartedly. Bonus poinst because one of the writing staff, Megan Ganz, is a Michigan alum and former editor in chief of the Every Three Weekly.

A new coach isn't going to magically provide us with a defense that's capable of stopping more than a one-legged kitten (and even that may be giving the current defense too much credit).

In Ohio, the loss in business has been pretty steep in the two years since the ban was enacted
The ban passed there in 2006, and (especially in Ohio) the economy hasn't exactly been on an upswing since then. In downturns, bars and restaurants lose business as people choose to stay home instead of going out; I'd be hesitant to credit that downturn solely to the smoking ban.

Somehow he seemed to have a lot of points again
I'm pretty sure the positive point total was done by one of the admins or mods - he gained hundreds of points in the course of one day to swing from negative to almost 1,000 in the black.
He then proceeded to lose most of those in a negbang fest after one of the losses, but that's beside the point.
Say what you want about his posting style or opinions, but I think that Belch was, on the whole, a plus for the board. Polarizing and occasionally trolly, sure, but he wasn't a determined contrarian like TomHagan was or making up false allegations in the midst of SPARTY FRENZY like Doctor Worm is.
But then again, I'm still new here, so I'm not sure what kind of posting history any of the three have - just what I've seen in the past few months, during the string of losses. It's probably safe to say that the losing streak might have colored their actions a bit.

Why was he negbanged for this?
It's not a popular sentiment, but the guy's got a point. Michigan's economy is in the toilet, and the less than diehard fans might be fine with 7/8 home games and using the OSU ticket to finance some of or all of the cost of the rest of the package. Especially if that's the only way they can cover the cost of the package. Let's face it: the OSU ticket alone is so valuable that it could not only cover the cost of the package, but it might make you a profit. Combine that with a down year, and you get what we saw today - an awful lot of red.
Say what you want about "true fans" and all of that, but money is a powerful force.

We've got Forcier and Robinson, who both have potential to be good or great quarterbacks. We've also got an entire offseason for them to practice, train, grow and improve. Right now, I'd much rather bet on that than on burning Gardner's redshirt year and hoping he lives up to the hype.

It doesn't matter what the other fan was or wasn't wearing - you do not physically assault someone because you don't agree with their viewpoint. I don't care how you try to justify it with "provoke someone" or "opened him up...to...retaliation" - there's a line that you do not cross. This was over that line.
He wore a paper bag on his head and wants Rodriguez to be fired. Big freaking deal. That doesn't make it okay to punch him in the face or eat his firstborn child.

Tell him what seats were improperly and illegally sold, and sold to the other team.
You know that won't accomplish anything, right? You have no proof that the tickets were sold illegally - for all you know, they were presented as a gift or were transferred from one person to another.
Obviously, that's not the case for the vast majority of cases, but without any kind of evidence, you're fighting a losing battle.
There are a few other issues with your plan, like the assumption that people sit in the seats that actually belong to them, or that the athletic department has the resources to hunt down thousands of people who possibly violated the ticket rules to punish them.

|4 years 21 weeks ago||I don't care if it's cold||
I don't care if it's cold weather; I don't care if people don't have maize gear - the university needs to make this game a Maize-Out from now on.
And how do you propose we do that? Most people don't have maize clothing for cold weather, and you can't expect them all to run out and buy something specifically for football. I've got one piece (a maize sweatshirt from the late, beloved Steve and Barry's), and even that made me an exception among my friends.
I think it's better to stick the maize-outs early in the season, when it's much easier to ensure they'll actually work. I'd rather have them early in the season than have a "maize-out" that wasn't actually maize.
Oh, and we need something in place to lower the number of opposing fans who can get tickets to this game. It pisses me off to see our home field advantage being thrown away like it is.
Again, how do you propose we do that? Even if they were hypothetically going to do something dumb like, say, restricting ticket sales to alumni and residents of Michigan, eBay, Craigslist, and who knows how many other websites make it easy for tickets to change hands. There's also the question of enforcement, because there is no practical way to try and police the distribution and usage of 100,000+ tickets for a football game.
Like it or not, they've got just as much right to be in the stadium as anyone else.

We've got Forcier, Robinson, and an entire offseason for them to practice, improve, and get those freshmen mistakes out of their system. Why burn Gardner's redshirt year and start another true freshmen over two more experienced options?
|4 years 21 weeks ago||Back to the game at hand...||
The defense played their best game of the year, and the offense played almost as well.
We only lost by two scores against one of the best defensive teams in the nation.
All of this, without MINOR RAGE, Carlos Brown (for most of the game anyway), or Molk - most of what we accomplished was with players who will return next year.
All of this, with true freshmen starters, a crapload of turnovers, and a touchdown that we handed OSU. Players will gain experience, and Forcier will learn and make less mistakes next time around.
Another plus: it didn't seem to me like we were outcoached.
I'm obviously not thrilled about the final score, but I'm glad that the game was as close as it was, and that there's hope for next season.

A big part of the problem is weather. Maize-outs are easy early in the year, because most of the people in the stadium have or can get the maize t-shirts.
As the season goes on, though, people begin to bundle up. Four years in that stadium taught me that most people don't have maize clothing for winter weather, and it can be hard to pull that t-shirt that fit perfectly in the fall over a coat or multiple layers.
It's a lot easier to find blue winter clothing, but as we've seen in the past the maize shows much better both in the stands and on the TV cameras.

|4 years 21 weeks ago||There's another factor here||
There's another factor here besides sample size, and that's sample composition.
If Michigan has a bad year or a run of bad years, there may be extenuating circumstances that led to those results (like, say, years of lousy recruiting or a coaching change). Because of the sample size, those circumstances can have a substantial effect. If we go back to your example of the last 30 years and we agree to chalk the last two years up to, say, black magic, that's 6.67% of your sample size that isn't "average." That's a significant amount.
In game probabilities, on the other hand, have colossal sample sizes that encompass most any combination of team skill level, outside circumstances, coaching ability, weather, or karma imaginable. Somebody made an argument that the Colts offense is better than average; that's irrelevant, because the "average" in those percentages includes teams as good as the Colts, better than, and far, far worse.

|4 years 22 weeks ago||Bad idea||
Its been suggested before that there be a review panel for new boards and diaries until a user crosses a (high) points threshold. Maybe that would return the discussions to topics more thought provoking.
Or, it could stifle input from users with new accounts, lead to groupthink from whoever is in charge of approving submissions, and cause significant delays in our abilities to discuss events as they happen.
I've seen this kind of idea proposed and even implemented on other sites, and it usually doesn't end well. It's a lot easier to do your own mental filtering. Don't like the topic? Your browser has a back button. Think the post is worthless? Just keep scrolling by. Suggesting some kind of system revolving around points (which, as we all know, are worthless) is an idea that won't end well.
|4 years 22 weeks ago||"Look at the team||
"Look at the team realistically?" You're allowed to throw out wins to try and defend your stance, when Sean already proved you wrong on the "absolutely zero improvement" claim?
We've got two more wins than last year (even if one of them was against Baby Seal U), we've had close losses against good teams like Iowa, and in the course of one season our offense has gone from Nick Sheridan as our best option to a team with a promising albeit young group of quarterbacks and receivers that has pulled a few miracle comebacks off already.
That seems like improvement over last year's trainwreck of a season to me.

Honestly, is the talent so bad that we're freaking 1-6 in the Big 10 and have no legitimate chance of keeping teams under 30 points per game?

Yes. Yes it is. No amount of coaching in the world can correct for the issues with fundamentals and with bad decisions that we've seen pop up time and time again this year.

Are there any plays, any schemes, any...anything you can point to to support that?
I didn't Wisconsin pulling out clever trick plays or finding creative ways to neutralize our offense. In fact, I don't think I saw anything that made it look like we were being outcoached. Once they got their lead, they just went back to running the ball for the majority of their plays. It doesn't take an offensive genius to come up with that, and I'm pretty sure that Rodriguez and Robinson could neutralize that if their line wasn't more experienced and stronger than ours.
I did, however, see our defense make the same mistakes and the same kinds of blown coverage that we've seen all year.

Even in the simplistic (and arguably wrong) way you stated it, they're still radically different.
In your wording, Brian's statement is an "if," hinging on future performance. Yours is already writing off a season that's still a year away, before we know who's going to commit, who leaves, who's going to redshirt, who might get injured, what (if any) position coaches leave or are fired...all sorts of factors. Your "we're going to fail" isn't the same as Brian's "if we fail," no matter how much you might want it to be.
Ignoring all of that, tone is also important. Brian is calm and reasoned. Your posts have been...not so much.

Dissent is fine.
The problem is the way he presented it, his other comments in the topic, and as other posters have pointed out, the fact that he's been spamming the board with garbage topics all weekend long.
I don't care how many people hate you - you don't get to a score of (at the moment) -93 on a single comment without earning it. Even King of Belch, who's been accused of trolling every hour or so for the entire weekend, has lost hundreds of points in the past few days, and is probably getting neg-banged on sight now, hasn't caused that much carnage.

That said...you saw the boards this weekend, right? I'm not sure how effective things like "reason" and "sanity" will be at this point in the season to the members of the fan base that have already made up their minds.

I agree for the most part, but two things:
How much can a bad team improve in one year? How much difference will one more year of game experience make?
I don't remember where so I can't link to it, but there was a post on the site recently that showed that players make the biggest gains in skill between their freshmen and sophomore years.
How much can you expect freshmen (true or red shirt) to make a difference?
Remember the ends of the Notre Dame, Indiana, and (regulation) MSU games? Our true freshman quarterback made a big difference then.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||The answer to the title||
The answer to the title question is no.
We've still got ten months to go before the game. We don't know who our recruits are. We don't know if anyone is leaving the team. We don't know if anyone is planning to transfer. As about half the board would gleefully point out, we don't know if Rodriguez or GERG will be here next year. It's far too early to begin predicting what might happen in 2010.
We should wait until the season is over before you even think of worrying about next year. We've got two, maybe three games left. Let's focus on those first.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||how the hell did we not win||
how the hell did we not win N'Western '08, and every game save PSU this year?
I see the talent deficit. You can't f'ing miss it on defense.
You just answered your own question.
Expecting us to win "every game save PSU" the year after we go 3-9 is wishful thinking, to say the least. That said, we've still shown improvement, and the fact that the team is putting up a fight now and that there have been so many close losses gives me hope for what we'll see once our defense is not so awful.
At this point the season is toast, with no chance of beating Wisky or OSU (how I'd love to be proven wrong)
Wait until next week. Wisconsin isn't as good as their record or ranking.

I could ask you the same question - I took that wording directly from your post.
More players who were deemed good enough to be scholarship players would be a start, yes. So would more experience - no disrespect to Kovacs or any of the other players, but the fact that we're starting freshmen, sophomores, and walk-ons by necessity shows just how little depth we have.
Though, at this point, I'd accept a defense that can make tackles with some consistency.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||I was most surprised by the||
I was most surprised by the fact that he linked to and apparently read the posts about our defense, and still says we're going to be looking for a new defensive coordinator.
I'm pretty sure Gerg isn't responsible for that 58.3%. I'm also convinced that there isn't a defensive coordinator alive who could make something functional out of the pieces we have right now.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||No.||
If the D is only just a bit better then you shouldn't hope to win more than 2 Big Ten games.
We've already won one Big Ten game. Iowa and Purdue were both two point losses. MSU was an overtime loss. With a better defense, I think we could have won all three of those games, because the offense clearly was executing well enough to give those teams a run for their money. We'd only have to win one of those to get your two Big Ten wins. That's definitely feasible with a stronger defense.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Unfortunately, we'll probably||
Unfortunately, we'll probably get the alternative ("The Big Ten is the WORST CONFERENCE EVER and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near our precious bowl games") months ahead of OSU's annual post-season collapse, instead of the day after.
I'm not sure if that's an upgrade.
I don't have much against Iowa, aside from a little residual bitterness from losing to them this year. If they'd gone undefeated and then done well in a bowl game, I would've enjoyed seeing that.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||The Red Wings are still the||
The Red Wings are still the class of the league
You haven't checked this season, then - they're 7-4-3, third in our division behind Chicago and Columbus, and tenth place in the conference. If the playoffs began today, we'd be two points out of the last seed.
On the other hand, we're still a few games behind everyone else because of the Europe trip delaying the start of our "regular season" slightly. They're on a three game winning streak, and play Toronto tonight in what should be an easy win. And in phrases that should sound familiar to everyone, there was a lot of loss via attrition during the offseason, and there have been some key injuries.

You're right; the frustration on my part stems from the general atmosphere here right now.
Sadly, I also agree with the rest of your post. Rodriguez will succeed if we don't run him out of town, but I'm more and more afraid it'll happen with each loss.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||If I knew, or had solid||
If I knew, or had solid reasons to be confident, that the defense wasn't going to be the same or worse and that the O-line would improve I would feel better. But I don't have any reason to do so.
I'll admit I don't really have much of a factual basis to be optimistic. It's just better than the alternative of becoming the otter of ennui.
Rodriguez has done well with recruiting in the past, and from the players they've been looking at it seems like he and the staff know what needs to be fixed, and who they'd like to use to fill those holes. The process of getting there has been and will be painful, but I'd like to think that Rodriguez's track record before Michigan says more about his abilities than his almost two years with a horribly depleted, underdeveloped talent base to work with.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Optimism ahoy!||
What makes you think this year's team stands a chance?
Simple: Purdue did it, and their offense is a lot like ours. It may take luck, but I think it can happen.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Fine. Let's be serious.||
Purdue lost to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, and Minnesota, but beat OSU.
Last year, we beat a Wisconsin team that was ranked #9 after starting the flaming crater season 1-2.
Optimism nothing - anything can happen in sports. We aren't supposed to win those games, but it's too early to discount them until they actually happen.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Have a tiny shred of patience.||
But what I would like to know is what all of these "calm down this is what we expected" folks think at this point.
Have a tiny shred of patience. Yes, last year sucked. Yes, this year sucks now. Once we get to a point where we aren't remaking the entire offensive line mid-season, where we've had some time to fix our depth problems - which we obviously can't do mid-season - and for the freshmen and redshirted players to have another offseason to develop, things should hopefully be better next year.
But I sure as heck expected this team to not get crushed by Illinois and choke a game away against Purdue when they had a two touchdown lead at the half.
This is the Purdue team that beat Ohio State, and the Illinois team that has Juice Williams, who has a knack for ripping our defense to shreds. I don't think either of the losses should have been gigantic shocks.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||I wouldn't say "just as||
I wouldn't say "just as crazy" - the offense has pulled off last minute miracles against Notre Dame, Indiana, and (at least in regulation) MSU this year.
On the other hand, I haven't seen much to convince me the defense could make a successful stand.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Before anyone calls me on it,||
Before anyone calls me on it, I'm not sure where the second half of my comment came from. Indiana and Purdue are almost the same team, right?
Football loss make brain no work.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Rodriguez is going to be here||
Rodriguez is going to be here next season. People will scream bloody murder and call for his head for the next year, but Mary Sue Coleman is still defending him and her opinion is the one that matters. And lest we forget, our overall record is still better than last year's, and we can match last year's Big Ten record with a win in either of our last two games. We're improving, just not at the rocket-like pace the fan base demands.
On the other hand, if we fire Rodriguez we'll lose commitments, lose players to transfers, and have to deal with the turmoil that comes with a new coach and a new staff coming in to change the system. Again. I'm just not seeing how that's a better alternative.
