Their backup QB Jennings looked pretty good after Mettenberger went down. He was a highly rated guy too and is a lot more mobile than Mett. With a month of practice they'll be fine. Maybe even better.

I think a 6-8 team playoff would actually make the season more enjoyable. In the current model (and even with the 4-team playoff) if your team loses a game, you're pretty much screwed. Lose two and things are even worse. And like we saw around here, when the season gets to that point, things get pretty bleak. And that's only for a team with two losses, which is insane. A greater margin of error should provide more hope and make for a better season.
|1 day 7 hours ago||Teams like MSU get hosed||
I agree that the current model screws over teams like MSU. They only lost one game. Same as Auburn. Hell, Stanford lost two and they are ranked higher than MSU. Yet, they don't get a shot at being in the title game because they werent ranked high to start the season. And by the time they were in the top 10, it was too late. A playoff (in theory) fixes those types of scenarios. But four teams is likely still too small since its doubtful MSU would be one of the four teams in a playoff (most likely FSU, Auburn, Alabama, Stanford).
|1 day 10 hours ago||Playoff would be an easy way to pay them||
If they did go to a larger playoff, it would be an easy way to pay the players. Take a large chunk of the billions an 8+ playoff would generate and put it into a fund for the players. If you want to cling to the amateurism of it all, make it payable upon graduation.
|1 day 10 hours ago||Six teams||
I do think it expands eventually, but i don't know how far. i kind of like the idea of a six team playoff. Top two teams get a bye, then you go 3-6 and 4-5. So you'd get something like Alabama v Ohio State and Stanford v MSU. But even that starts to get a little messy. With the conference championship games involved, you'd wind up with a lot of tricky matchups trying to avoid rematches.
|1 day 21 hours ago||Win the division||
Those are all pretty much the same goal. To win the division, they're going to have to beat MSU and OSU and anything more than two other losses probably has them losing a tiebreaker for the division title.
Plain and simple, winning the division is the goal for next season.
|1 day 21 hours ago||Totally agree||
I could care less what happens on the way there, but anything short of the Big Ten Championship game would be a failure in my opinion.
Its year three of the game and Michigan hasn't been remotely close to playing in it. If you're going to set winning Big Ten Championships as a program goal, you can't go 0-4 on even having a chance to play for one let alone win one. So they've at least got to get in the game next season.
And to get there, they're most likely going to have to go 2-1 vs MSU, PSU, OSU as well as win the rest of their conf games. That's a tall task given the last few years and what they lose.
|2 days 27 min ago||Degree||
You're seriously overestimating the value of a Michigan degree vs one from Alabama. Unless you're going to B-School, engineering, or pre-med no one really cares if your BS/BA is from Michigan or Alabama.
|2 days 32 min ago||Michigan recruiting||
Michigan recruiting is like getting into a relationship with a cute girl who's about 15 lbs overweight but has a gym membership. Things look good early on, but after Thanksgiving she hasn't lost the weight (and may have gained 5lbs) and now her hot friends are hitting on you.
|3 days 3 hours ago||Upgrade||
If I was a Huskies fan I would be stoked. Petersen is an upgrade over Sark. Its not too often that you get to upgrade when your coach leaves for greener pastures.
|3 days 3 hours ago||He had plenty of opportunities too||
The whole leaving sooner thing is a load of bunk. Petersen has been at the top of every job opening for the last 5+ years. And did people forget he just turned down USC?
|4 days 14 hours ago||So were all if the guys I mentioned||
I get that each kid is different but all those guys I mentioned were considered Mich leans late into their recruitment. Green is really the only one I can remember that went their way. Maybe Ondre was too but I don't remember much about his recruitment.
|4 days 20 hours ago||Oh man...||
You know the wheels are starting to fall off the fanbase when Michigan gets compared to the Browns.
|4 days 20 hours ago||Can you blame them though?||
I mean, you can't blame Michigan fans though, can you? Michigan seems to lose out on an awful lot of these high profile kids that start out as Michigan leans and put off their commitment close to signing day. Off the top of my head, there's been Hand, Garnett, Diamond, and Treadwell. Derrick Green is really the only one I can think of recently that actually picked Michigan.
So in a way, being pessimistic is being realistic.
|4 days 21 hours ago||I think you mean||
I think you meant to say:
I appreciate your interest in the team.
But rather than simply commenting on something you posted, I chose to create a whole new thread on how to offer criticism using a lovely picture of a burger.
I enjoy burgers too, and like using pictures of them like you do.
Is that how we're supposed to do it?
|4 days 21 hours ago||Alternative?||
He might be the kind of guy that's better in shorter and more focused bursts. And you might even see him bring more energy in that role. Maybe. But I don't think there's a good alternative to swap him out for in the starting lineup.
|4 days 21 hours ago||I'd like to see him focus on ANYTHING||
He just seems to float around out there most of the time. I chalked it up to freshman jitters or whatever last season, but this is year two man. If you're floating around at the college level and don't have at least one trademark talent (shooting, passing, defense, rebounding, hustle, etc.) then there's no way you're going to cut it in the NBA.
And you're right. Rebounding would be an easy one for him to focus on. Take that athleticism and be the best rebounder you can be.
|4 days 21 hours ago||I thought this was about me at first||
I thought this was about me at first.
|4 days 22 hours ago||GRIII man...||
I continue to have no idea what the NBA hype around GRIII is. He doesn't really do anything well outside of dunk. He's like a plus version of Brent Petway. He's just super athletic and that gets you nowhere in the NBA without a high motor. And he definitely doesn't have that.
|5 days 18 hours ago||I feel like McDowell is Nick Perry 2.0||
I feel like McDowell is Nick Perry 2.0 If he commits to Michigan, color me surprised. Seems like a guy that's looking for a reason to not go to Michigan.
|5 days 18 hours ago||Georgia's guys are done for the season||
Murray, Marshall, and Mitchell are all done for the year. Plus who knows how healthy their other walking wounded will be after a month. Georgia will remain a far from healthy team through their bowl game.
But Gurley man...he scary. Especially after Hyde.
|6 days 2 hours ago||Actual game action helps too||
Plus, if Thomas is going to be the safety of the future, getting him in some actual game action helps too. Looking into the 2014 season, starting a safety who's never played a down of live college football isn't quite ideal.
|6 days 2 hours ago||Front 7||
I do like the front 7 next season. They lose Black and QWash, but everyone else returns. The young guys will all be a year older, wiser, and stronger, plus they can start to rotate in some of the guys they redshirted this year like Poggi and McCray.
I think the overall success of the unit though hinges largely on Pipkins ability to bounce back from injury.
|6 days 20 hours ago||Yeah, but look at this season||
At the start of the season, how many games was this team going to be favored in? Probably about 9. But they only won 7. At some point, you've got to use the recent past as a track record for projecting the future.
|6 days 20 hours ago||What do you think happens if they lose 4 or 5?||
Look, if Michigan is still going to try and pretend that they are an elite national title contending school, then you need to set the bar high. Losing four and five games a year just isn't going to cut it.
So with that in mind, I just don't see how Brandon can look at three straight bad seasons and say "yup, this is still the guy" because you can't sell "they're improving" at that point any more. Because if that's what he's telling you, you have to ask "improving towards what?" Following next season, if he's been improving the guys he's recruited and coached for three straight seasons, and they are still a four or five loss team, that doesn't say a whole lot about his ability to coach at a high level.
Basically, every season Hoke has been year, there's been some excuse for the failures -- coaching transition, scheme transition, youth/depth, etc. Next season all of those are gone. The only excuses left are the ones of his own doing. And they will be the same issues that we've seen the last three seasons, which means they aren't likely to change with a fifth season.
|6 days 21 hours ago||Exactly||
You don't pass up an opportunity to change staff simply because you have a fifth year senior who would be getting his third OC/QB coach. You do it because you think its best for the long term success of the program.
And its not like Hoke needs to switch from manball to spread. Just find an OC that does the things you'd like Borges to do, but does them better.
|6 days 21 hours ago||Exactly the point I was making||
Yeah, that's what I think too. If they go 7-5 or even 8-4 next year there's an awful lot of evidence built up that Hoke's not the right guy. It'll be year four for him in the program, and if you're going to make the claim that things are headed in the right direction, you can't do that with your third straight sub-par season.
Next season has to be a 9 or 10 win season or Hoke is done. He'll have exhausted all possible excuses and the vultures will be circling at that point.
|6 days 22 hours ago||Maybe they read right to left in Denmark||
Maybe they read right to left in Denmark and he saw 0-8 as 8-0.
|6 days 22 hours ago||Me too||
If you're Jackson, I don't really see the point of sticking it out one more year and then retiring. Unless he's going to hit some magic retirement threashold with an extra season. The time to walk off into the sunset is when your kid graduates. If he comes back for next season, I don't see him retiring for a while.
|6 days 22 hours ago||Double down||
All this really does is make next season a make it or break it season for Hoke. He's got to hit 9 or 10 wins. With a third straight 5 loss season (or even a four loss season really) its going to be awful hard to bring him back for another year.
He's essentially doubling down on his own future here. The time for changes was this season. Next season it will be too late.
