It seems like Wisconsin

It seems like Wisconsin always has the most favorable schedule for basketball...

NR at this point often means

NR at this point often means the site has not scouted them- not that they aren't good.  When a player commits to a big program (which MSU is) then they likely expedite that process so that they have scouted players commited to top schools.

So the bump up at this stage is mostly a reflection of the tremendous amount of change possible in the early stages.  When a player goes unchanged or unranked through multiple rounds of ranking updates and then commits and sees a huge bump you can argue its due to a "bump" but in this case I think its fairer to say its early in the game and the rankings change quickly.

Plus, I tend to agree that recruits to top schools get more hype, and that often translates to a "bump" in rankings that may not always be fair.  And because Michigan has a bigger fanbase, and one that follows recruiting so heavily, it makes it more likely our recruits get a higher "bump" than those of many schools.

But rankings are only a reflection of success recruiting- a player won't be any better when they get to campus if they were a 5-star rather than a 4-star- its just that the expectations and class rankigs will be higher.

SEC $

If the Big XII get's 20 mill, I imagine the SEC will be getting quite a bit next go round.

States also lose highway money if they lower too- tough politically to lower it with interest groups too.

Well put

Very well said!

So excited that basketall is a big draw at Michigan again and we are a team that will be bummed without a banner now!

So subjective with the rankings that it gets real tough.  Is a class of two top 100 players better than one with two top 100 and some role players?  In football bigger classes trump smaller ones because more players can equal more impact- with basketball its real hard when class iszes can range from 1 or 2 to 5 or 6.  Averages don't work well when comparing a team with 2 recruits to one with 5, so subjective criteria really ocmes into play.

No matter how you slice it though we have one heck of a class coming in to build on the success of the past few years and keep taking this program to new levels!

Really excited to see him

Really excited to see him play!

Best case: All-conference type player

Worst case: Gritty tough-guy getting boards and being a "glue" type player

Good background!

A lot of time you hear tradition and feel like it just always was that way- you pointed out very well how specific individuals (Yost in particular) and well thought out plans lead to tradition.  Building a big stadium, choosing distinct uniforms, scheduling top teams, and all of the decisions made during the early years of Michigan football created the tradition that has made the athletics program what it is.

It is sad about UVa.  VT shows that you can create tradition and bring in fans quickly and turn it into high demand for your team.  UVa has had good teams in the past but despite being in a good conference in a state with many recruits and great academcis just never materialized into a good program.  It's sad that you can't fill a student section with free tickets...

I think any way to do a 5

I think any way to do a 5 game series is tough.  1-1-1 at the end means a ton of travel, and a 2-3 means there is a reasonable chance the better team comes back needing to win all three- but if you truly are better you should at least split the first two and have a hge advantage wrapping the series up.  It also guarantees the lower seed needs to win on the road- which is tough to do.

Still very early for these

Still very early for these rankings which explains lots of the oddities.

I think Beilein has proved that we should have faith in his recruits.  He gets guys that work so well for his system- and the incoming class is finally a loaded class.  This class has the potential to be similar to that class- since so many Beilein recruits take off after commiting it seems. Not worried where Irvin gets rated- I am very excited to see him play for us no matter if he is a SF, SG, 5 star, 4 star, or whatever on any scouting service.

We are lucky

What I think after all these articles is how lucky we are as UM fans.

1- We have a large undergrad population= many alums and guaranteed tickets to big sports

2- We are next to a big metro area= lots of local fans

3- We have huge tradition= less fairweather fans that can wreak havoc during dry years (by dwindling attendance) and tons of fans who will pay insane amounts and give money

4- Huge/nice arenas= 110,000 tickets for football, close to 13,000 for basketball

5- Big Conference= lots of TV money, and high level of competition

6- Ann Arbor/fan support= not just football and basketball but both mens and womens teams

It can be very tough for teams that miss on just some of these areas and we have great support from all!

Haven't we always been hosed?

This seems to me to be a continuation of being screwed more than shooting ourselves in the face.  Yes it'd be great to get home games or "northern" or "midwestern" matches and fighting for those would have been great- but we had history against us.

BCS sites:

Glendale, AZ

New Orleans, LA

Miami, FL

Pasadena, CA

And the Big Ten's love affair with the Rose Bowl is to keep a game where we are always disadvantaged by geography- playing a PAC 12 team at one of their stadiums.

SEC, ACC, and PAC 12 teams will always have some advantage by being in warmer more bowl-desirable locations.  Yes the home playoff idea could have changed that but the history, tradition, and money interests were all against it.

We've been hosed for years by it and will continue to be...

Exciting up and coming programs that pair up well in the conference are great gets for the A-10- it's becoming a very very decent BB conference.

BBall has classes of 3-5

BBall has classes of 3-5 football 15-30, and BB starts 5 and football 11 offense, 11 defense, 1 kicker, 1 punter, 1 KR, etc.

It is very tough to pick from this group and not say everyone- but I think that's just the nature of a foot ball HOF- it will have to be stricter than BB.

QB's should certainly have

QB's should certainly have more time in the pocket to wait for the defense to break down or find the right target.  That depends also on accuracy of QB and route-running of WR.  So the deep OL should really help with that but I feel like that is less guaranteed (because it relies on QB and WR components heavily as well) than is solid running- which is more assured with a top OL.

If the OL holds strong there should be very few negative runs (and less sacks) and it could almost be like every rush is at least guaranteed 2 or 3 yards making even semi-decent RB very effective.

I think Wisconsin would run

I think Wisconsin would run into trouble with beer sponsored helmets... /s

The boots with the GB socks are what sold me though.

Huh?

I'm not sure why governments pay schools for athletics either...

Agree that it is particularly unfair if the other state school(s) is/are not getting money.

What do most schools use government money for in athletics- stadium building/renovation?

Agree with WolvinLA2- No

Agree with WolvinLA2- No Henne is bizarre...

Hart, Long, Graham, and Woodley in that order for me- with Henne as a 5th.

The fairest way is a seeded

The fairest way is a seeded tournament.  It seems like having bowl tie-ins just make it more likely that the parings wont be as fair as they should be.

I like the Rose Bowl- but I dislike anything that takes away from a fair way to crown a champion- and fighting to keep the Rose Bowl I think will just perpetuate issues of unfairness in crowning a champion.

Thanks to both you and

Thanks to both you and ACE!

How common is it for players to do both track and football?  RG3 and Denard both do/did track correct?

Will track recruiting play a

Will track recruiting play a big role for him then?  Is he looking for schools good at both programs?

Would he have to be able to do track here too? (And if so could he?)

Anyone know anything about

Anyone know anything about Devon Allen?  If we can't get Treadwell he'd be my next favorite WR.

The Ty Isaac USC MGoBoard post was one of the fastest 100 comment reachers I have seen- I understand the frustration but with our OL and solid RB already in the fold- I am not worried one bit about our running game moving forward- would have been nice to get Ty- but we are still in a great place!

I suppose "losing" a highly

I suppose "losing" a highly touted recruit soon after that post provides some irony- but it seemed to be more about that actual process of recruiting than the quality of recruits (although that too is insanely high).

The staff seems to really connect to kids and be classy about recruiting which is what the post pointed out.  Because a recruit went elsewhere doesn't mean anything about what we did.  Maybe he likes nice weather, or the pop-culture/Hollywood scene for example.  ,Michigan isn't for everybody, and its best players go where they will enjoy being- hope that USC can be that place for Ty (except for potential Rose Bowl clashes as others have pointed out).

I like our RB class even

I like our RB class even without him- but this is disapointing.

USC sure can pull in good RB's...

Good luck to Ty in the future.

That is an awesome

That is an awesome chart!

Looking at the student fees is intersting- the ACC and Big East get tons of money from student fees, SEC a decent amount by most, the Big 12 and PAC 12 mixed bag, and the Big Ten barely any.  Illinois (2.9 million or $93.48 per student) and Iowa (.6 million, $29.58 per student) are the only two.

Glad the Big Ten is not asking too much of students who laready pay so damn muh for school.

UVA has students pay $938 per student.... that's absurd!

Minnesota's subsidies make

Minnesota's subsidies make their revenue equal expenses.

My guess is they have a clause that the university or other fees must be used to pay expenses if revenues fall short.  All the other school being subsidized do not seem to fit any pattern:

UM, Iowa, Illinois (barely) would still run a surplus without subsidies

Wisc, MSU, and IND seem to require their subsidies to have a higher surplus

So:

4 schools no subsidies- all of which have surplus (OSU, PSU, NEB, PURD)

3 schools surplus without their subsidies (UM, IOWA, ILL)

1 school even due to subsidies (MINN)

3 schools requiring subsidies for surplus (WISC, MSU, IND)

and NW who knows?

Howell is 6-8.
Here are our

Howell is 6-8.

Here are our scholarship players:

Player Height
Burke 5. 11
Albrecht 6. 1
Vogrich 6. 4
LeVert 6. 5
THJ 6. 6
Staukas 6. 6
GR III 6. 6
Biefeldt 6. 7
Morgan 6. 8
Horford 6. 10
McGary 6. 10
McLimans 6. 10

They have some 6-8 guys and a 6-9 center. Tallest recruit is 6-7.

So I' agree with raleighwood- feeling good about the matchups.

Sure 7 foot guys may be tough, but we have a deep and energetic big-man rotation and damn teams are gonna have trouble guarding our guards (Burke can be unguardable, and the other guys are all 6-4 plus- potentially all 6-6 plus).  Should be a very different future than what we've been used to.  No more Novak at PF getting posterized (remember him guarding Griffin...)- should be us outmatching teams with height for most games now!

Our roster next year is

Our roster next year is actually pretty tall!

We have been way undersized during the Beilein years but not this next year especially if recruits play early.

Burke, Vogrich, and Spike are only guys that will regularly play that don't have very decent size.

I can see that point.
We also

I can see that point.

We also have a recruiting class that is highly ranked and are pre-season top 10 like them.

I can certainly respect the arguement they should be better (largely due to a better tourney)- but at home I think we have slight edge, neutral even, and if it were there I'd expect them to win.  Home court means a lot- just look at what we did last year.

I agree it may be harsh but a

I agree it may be harsh but a lot of schools have graduation requirements for retired numbers or hall of fame type tributes.  Melo won a NC so thats a pretty huge difference.  Unless you changed the face of the program and left early I think a players that leaves early isn't quite HOF material.  Morris was good but we weren't sweet 16, and he didn't change the face of the program like Melo or other early NBA guys.  Part of why people love Novak and Stu is what they represented and how they brought the program back with their attitude, hustle, and talent- leaving early takes away from that and from the "student-athlete" cmponent that is important for a college tribute IMO.

Purdue has good recruits but

Purdue has good recruits but loses two top players and is coming off a year they beat no top teams other than us if I recall correctly- plus game is on the road so I don't think they have better than 50-50 odds or so.

Iowa if they can take steps could be decent- but similar to Purdue had few big wins and a road game so unlikely to have a great shot.

And Minnesota is good I agree- but on the road at FSU is very tough (they always seem to knock of top teams there).  Due to that hard to say they are favorites even if slight.

My

My thoughts:

Game BIG TEN   ACC
Edge Slight Edge EVEN Slight Edge Edge Notes
UNC @ Indiana X         Top team at home
NCST @ UM   X       Very even, home court puts it in UM's favor
MINN @ FSU     X     Minn slightly better likely but on road
MD @ NW         X Likely ACC win
IOWA @ VT     X     Both mediocre teams
OSU @ Duke       X   Very even- perhaps slight edge to Duke with home court
UVA @ WISC X         Good UW team at home
MSU @ MIAMI X         MSU will be top team again
PURD @ CLEM     X     Both mediocre teams
GT @ ILL     X     Both mediocre teams
BC @ PSU     X     Both mediocre teams

Great write up as always.
If

Great write up as always.

If OSU is going to catch us they will needs a lot of high quality guys- because our last couple of recruits will likely be high 3 stars at minimum it seems like with a lot of talent looking our way and being able to be selective.

Still very early though- if we don't lose recruits its hard not to see us be top 3- and likely top unless OSU/ND/PSU can go crazy

I love Sims- I remember

I love Sims- I remember fondly the Duke game and rushing the court.

If the team were more popular at the time he'd get much more love.

Horton fits the same mold of a great player without any real fan support playing during the duldrum years...

I'd like a graduation requirement though- Harris leaving early was a joke- and he was a horrible team guy.  Morris was huge- but 4 years of Novak trumps 2 years of a superior Morris.

I take Sims and Novak (heart of the group that rebuilt the program) and can go either way with Horton.

Navy, Purdue, BYU, Pitt, BC,

Navy, Purdue, BYU, Pitt, BC, Wake seem very doable thats 6

MSU, UM, Miami, Stanford, Oklahoma, USC- not sure they can win 1/2 of those- in a bad break season maybe even none of them...

I like having Wisconsin right

I like having Wisconsin right below us.  They are a very similar school.  In fact, if I didn't get into UM I'd have gone there.  Similar academics, similar school culture, similar type of student.  They lack the history we have but have had great success of late.  Good at football and basketball every year- not a bad run they've had- plus they aren't too hateable.

NW round out my three best.  Sure their sports aren't great but for their size and academic focus they aren't horrible (like Indiana football).  Plus how can you hate them- they do it right- everyone roots for them to make the bracket for BBall and when they are good at football everyone feels good about it- not many top conference teams you can say that about.

What's not to like about

What's not to like about it?

1- Players did work at the camp- with a couple getting position MVP

2- Recruits all clearly get along

3- They "obvious" choice is "beat OHIO"

Good to see the guys have some fun, excite our fanbase, and piss off Ohio fans all at the same time!

I would love a book by Pryor

I would love a book by Pryor penned by the man himself.  I just don't get why he'd want to write one.  The stry will get old soon- kind of like how people rarely if ever bring up that Rose cheated on his ACT's and effed over the Memphis program.  If I were him I'd just let it all go and let it die down and hope that he can develop into an NFL player- but he seems to want to write one...

What are people who are in

What are people who are in the know sayin about the odds he returns after this coming year?

Love the idea of points for

Love the idea of points for being there early.

I always got to game 30 minutes or more early as a student- always loved it when the stadium was quieter and you could wander everywhere and feel the excitement build!

Always hated how the back half of the student section was practically empty for much of the first quarter or half- especially for weaker opponents.  The more time that students are in the Big House the better the excitement builds!

From all the reports and

From all the reports and camps it seems like some of our top guys will get a bump in the next rankings!

Whether they are 3, 4, or 5 stars obviously doesn't change their actual abilities or how well they wil perform while at Michigan- but, watching the rankings of this class has been very fun!

Nice work with the pic!
With

Nice work with the pic!

With a fanbase like Michigan if he can be a Heisman candidate or take UM to even one BCS game he would certainly be a candidate for a cover- but I agree with many here saying its way to early for that talk.

Fun to mess around and dream though!

515 yds on 26 carries- that

515 yds on 26 carries- that is absurd!!

Thats almost 20 yds a carry...

Kid looks like a beast- it'd be amazing to get him- but with some good RB recruits already and a crazy OL I'm not gonna go crazy if we don't land him- but I sure do want him to become a Michigan Man.

Also-
Did he ever have any

Also-

Did he ever have any interest from Ohio State?

Has there even been a

Has there even been a negative thing said about an OL recruit?

I'm really looking forward to watching our RB's tear it up, and QB's have all day with a big pocket!  Real excited to see these OL recruits mature and dominate the Big Ten!
