We shouldn't badmouth Beilen. But I don't think we can confidently say he is a better coach than Izzo at this point.

I don't know what you're getting at with the same cloth stuff, but I'm pretty sure beilien is Catholic, not evangelical Protestant. I'm not sure if that matters much to your point since I can't figure out what it is.

Really impressed by a coach who is so involved in teaching academic and, honestly, life skills. College kids struggle to juggle responsibilities without the huge commitment required for athletics. Feeding them easy courses helps in the short term but hurts them when they need to get an actual job. Teaching them how to manage it takes a lot more work, but gives a genuine education. This guy seems like a committed teacher who happens to teach football instead of a committed football enthusiast who happens to teach. Looking forward to what he accomplishes.

This is absolutely wrong. The team played better as young guys got more experience, not because spike was playing instead of Walton or because they lost LeVert. LeVert isn't a ballhog who was ruining the offense. He was also our best defender, the side of the ball ignored by all the spike fanfare.

Walton is much better. He's better at getting to the basket, and he is much much better defensively and on the glass.

The ok aclu seems to be making a political statement in supporting the university. Should they make it a legal one, the sincere part of it wont be based on the school not being part of the state government.

Do you think speed limits aren't government regulations because you can choose not to drive? Or the sec isn't a governmental agency because you don't have to trade securities? They are state actors.

Gotta laugh, gently, at all the legal theorists "educating" people on how the first amendment works in this thread. A state university is unquestionably a state actor. It is part of the government and hence the first amendment applies to it. If only someone made a comic explaining this.

People keep fucking talking about Kentucky in 2013 but they were not this bad and their recruiting was light years ahead of Michigan. I'm sure michigan will be much better next year, but the transition will look nothing like what happen at Kentucky

Kentucky still made the nit in their off year. A team can have an off year and still break 500 in a weak conference.
|4 weeks 7 hours ago||Why shouldn't we blame the||
Why shouldn't we blame the principles? If we had fouled, we likely would have won, young or not. The principles are much easier to change than the age of the players, and could hurt the team again in the future, so why shouldn't they be the focus.
|4 weeks 9 hours ago||I don't think the problem||
I don't think this team zone problems are on offense. The problem is that they cannot cover the corner 3 in either of the zones they run (2-3, 1-3-1). They are bad in man-to-man, but I'd prefer they would just stay in man. Once the novelty of the 1-3-1 wears off, as it does quickly in conference play, it takes a lot of practice to run it effectively (it's more aggressive than most zone defenses). We don't have that experience with it. Our 2-3 is clearly something we very rarely run and hence it isn't run very well. The spacing looks like total shit, even to my untrained eye, and they always seem late in getting it set-up.
The injures have really hurt our man defense. Spike's a very good college player, but Walton was a much better defender. I saw Spike call for about 3 or 4 switches, with different players, during a single 20 second possession in man defense. You have to fight through some of those off the ball screens, especially with a team this young-- freshman are doing all they can just to cover their man, they're going to get confused when you keep switching on the screens. There was another possesion where Chatman looked pissed at Spike for calling for switch (though maybe that was on Chatman, it was tough to tell). I think he's also worse than Walton in helping off on the big. He often helps too late. The bigs are poor defenders, but they're so young and/or undersized that there isn't much more you could reasonably expect. They need good help defenders and there aren't any.

Sadly, I said that same thing last year.
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||They've been good||
I think they've been good in past years on scoring from an inbound from under their own basket, but the concern tonight was inbounding under the opponent's basket. I don't know of a good way of statistically assessing those types of inbounds, since points earned off this kind of inbound is really a measure of successful offensive plays and not the inbounding play. The number of 5 second penalties a team receives and the number of times they must use in such situations would be a reasonable measure, but I've never seen it (only the BOB, SOB points scored data).
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||I don't think||
I don't think inbounding can be a personnel thing since it seemed to be a problem with other personnel as well. Further, sometimes the plays themselves just seem badly designed. That Beifeldt inbounds 1/2 court bomb was crazy stupid. I know you don't have many options in that scenario but (1) even if Irvining caught it it would have been a half-court shot, which you could get throwing it a much shorter distance and having the guy run into the shot and (2) the absolute worst thing you can do is bomb it out-of-bounds without it touching anything inbounds. That play call offered a huge risk for very little reward. On the whole, it's not a massive problem. But it is, I think, a coaching problem.
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||If it's smarter||
If it's smarter to foul, then the logic isn't sound. I do agree that long-time coaches rarely deviate from their policy on fouling at the end of games. Most refuse to do it at all. They still ought to do it, though. The inbounding disasters and the inability to cover the corner three in both 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones are much greater concerns, in my view.
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||???||
I agree with some of this, because people saying fire Beilen are over reacting. But without the injuries we would be winning games now, which is way better than possibly winning games in the future. Remember when we all said "Oh man, McGary got hurt, but he'll be back next year and we will so awesome then!" Well guess what, shit happened and he never came back. Next year MAAR and Dawkins might be injured, Walton might not be at the level he would be had he played another season, some random big *coughJonHorfortcough* might decide to transfer for no discernable reason. We have no choice but to put our faith in next season, given what a piss and shit show this year has been. But I'd much rather not have to do that.
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||What part of clutch three||
What part of clutch three-hitting induced Michigan to shit the bed (AGAIN!) on an inbounds play and turn the ball over? And that wasn't even the worst inbound call, since the Bielfielt 1/2 court bomb was full on monkey rodeo.
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||You realize||
You realize that saying Beilen has performed poorly in this particular game (or even this particular season) is not the same as saying his should be fired, right?
|4 weeks 10 hours ago||Really?||
I don't think it's too much to expect Michigan to make the NIT, which is very unlikely at this point. Is it too much to expect Michigan to manage to beat a horrible Northwestern team when they are leading by five with less than a minute left?

Every offseason fans of every school that changes S & C coaches says this same damn thing. To give just the exmaples from Michigan, people said it with Barwis while they bitched about Lloyd Carr giving everybody pizzas. They said it with Wellman while they bitched about Barwis. Now they'll say it about Tolbert and bitch about Wellman, even before a single game is played. And if Tolbert gets fired, they'll say it about the next guy while they bitch about Tolbert.
