The last era was mostly incompetent anyway so I won't totally blame him but as far as defenses go his sucked worse then any defense I've ever seen.

Ideally you want your guys to learn all of the techniques as it makes them better and allows them to understand other teammates assignments. The 5 tech means he can certainly get after it as far as rushing the passer is concerned. I believe over time he will become athletically sound enough to know when to use bull rush, spin, rip, and others. From what I've seen on film he needs a little work but has a lot of upside and room for improvement.

Denard is a superior athlete and extremely hard worker. Everyone witnessed the change from his freshmen to sophomore season. He was noticeably better. If Denard didn't have to run 20+ times per game to save our ass he could have had even better numbers. Borges has been around this long for a reason.. He knows what he's doing.

I personally prefer the "balanced" QB's as they present the defense the greatest challenge to defend them. If Denard shows us he can adapt and keeps his completion percentage around the same as this season our offense will have great success.

Gardener is IME a perfect fit for this system once he is comfortable. And his projected 2 years as the starter could be quite a success for him and the team.

I think were headed in a very positive direction and sustained success again under Hoke. His undying passion for this University helps vastly in recruiting and had certainly helped bring the fans closer together. I love his energy and by all accounts on the recruiting trail he is a very likable guy. I can't give a pre- season prediction til I break down the spring game. Regardless it's safe to say were going bowling.

There are other ways and formations we can use to get him the ball in favorable situations. Don't just assume we will be under center all the time for those qb designed runs. I want to see his footwork during the spring game, that will say a lot about how smoothly the transition will go for him in this style offense. Denard is such a hard worker I can't see him failing at anything he puts his mind to. Very excited for this new era of Michigan football.

The 3-3 cant stop the run in the big ten. You can argue for days about this with me, when you have bigger bodies filling gaps becomes much easier. Also covering additional created gaps is not made harder in any degree by running the shifted 4-3. One of the biggest things Mattison teaches is flying to the ball and making sure our scheme allows us to be gap and technique sound against any offense but specifically the more pro style looks that are so prevalent in our conference. When playing the spread teams in the conference there are naturally less gaps to defend on most plays and thus forces us in a different package. I love where the defense is heading under Mattison and co. I believe after a year in the system were going to become dominant once again. We needed this badly. While the 3-3 looks give some more flexibility to defend any type of offense it is very weak against the power running game because of the lack of size on the field. Thank you for you analysis though I always enjoy speaking with other coaches as I assume you might be. You are right in the instance that it doesn't automatically make u gap sound, but when taught properly I'll take my chances with the 4-3 over the 3-3 in this conference any day. Defenses are multiple anyways now a days so we might even see some 3-3 looks throughout the year. Thanks again

With the talent in the midwest this year being as high as it's been in some time coupled with our recruiting prowess and we could very well end up top 8

As much as I want to vote for our rivalry, until we make it one again, I can't. However I do think with hole were able to compete with them right away to get the games status back. They did this poll several years ago an ours was ahead by a nice margin.

I was a fan of the offensive system but It was easy for me to let go of Rich. One thing that always bothered me was his seemingly normal approach to that last game in November. During his time here we were clueless on special teams (Mesko) being the exception. Defensively we got worse, the abnormal attrition, the media perception and of corse the violations. He can talk all he wants about how good we were going to be this coming season, the truth is he didn't deserve a fourth season. This is Michigan! I wish RR the best wherever his next stop is. My only advice: quit making excuses it makes you look worse then the past three seasons already did.

The shifted 4-3

The 4-3 defense whether it's an over or under look is a much more effective defensive look against the Big Ten. There are a few reasons for this. First is because it allows the front seven to be much more "gap sound" with bigger bodies. Second it allows us to quickly be able to shift to account for any new gaps created by a lead blocker or player in motion. The ability to be gap sound will help us astronomically against the run. Another benefit of this switch is now our defensive lines ability to "stunt" and create pressure with the front four much more efficient then when you have a single NT in the game. One thing that worries me about this formation is the susceptibility to the play action. Any sort of over pursuit from the line backers is a death wish against a team with a good tight end. Playing against teams like ND our base look will be obsolete for majority of the game because of the 2x2, 3x2, and 3x1 sets. Greg Mattison is a he'll of a teacher. He will have our guys ready and they will understand the system quickly, but such is the case in this great sport you can be the greatest coach ever but if you don't execute it's worthless.

Can we stop re-visiting why RR didn't work? It's been said the same a thousand different ways. Regardless of why, it's time to move on. He'll, it's been time since his departure.

Brady and manning are nit in pro style offenses. Please keep your nonsense away from me.

The only thing that concerns me in the slightest regarding Denard under center is the size of our linemen. In the "pro style" offense Denard will see 5 and 7 step drops that he is unaccustomed to. Rich rods offense was predicated on spreading the defense out to limit the coverages a defense can use. Most if the time Denards reads were made prior to the throw based on a number of different pre snap advantages. In the pro style offense denard is going to have to make split second reads on which coverage the defense is in. He picked up the zone read very well but coverages can be very well disguised. At the end of the dayvi think Denard will be very successful with the transition because he is an extremely hard worker and a freakish athlete with things you can't teach like vision, speed, and the ability to create. However I do think there will be some growing pains especially since his downfield success isnt the best. So excited to see what 2011 brings. Go blue!

It's a shifted 4-3 which gives it a little diversity being able to show a base defense from several different fronts. I'm interested to see how much a year, a competent staff all pulling in the same direction, and some much needed depth at positions of need what the product will look like before late august. I'm also curious as to the immediate results of the strength training under the new staff.

One thing about Hamilton is that he brings his all night after night, and is a pros pro by all means a guy that has done it the right way from day 1. Sad to see him getting treated this way.

Football terminology for the most part is very similar with most coaches. As far as feeling comfortable within the new systems it is going to take a handful of plays here and there during actual game play to gain confidence and begin playing without having to think.

Wow. This has to be some sort of joke. I almost shit my pants when I came across the junk food and video game part. I would venture a guess that he's fond of marijuana.

Whatever you say captain. You are entitled to your opinion as am I. I was a pro RR guy all the way to the end. I also wish him well in his future. J wasn't trying to paint him in negative light, only the first thing that came to mind with those recruits he went after. Carry on good sirs

The last position we need more of is wide receiver. So you want Hoke to keep this kids offer just to be nice? He said he is going to make decisions in the best interest for Michigan. Bringing in Flowers when you could get more depth at needed positions is assanine

Stating the obvious don. What part of my statement was incorrect? A few is 3 and there were more then that number on the list. Then I wished them well. I think it's time you take your medication. Loser

A Michigan education is a top tier degree. It amazes me how someone with a free ride at Michigan could care so little about his education. If I were ever fortunate to go to Michigan for free I would owe it to myself to get the most out of it. Looks like Tate got nothing out of it off the field and not a whole lot of it on it either. Thank you for the contributions you made and good luck in the future.
