"Jim's a tough guy and you can see his personality is all over this football team," Fitzgerald said.

Been suffering with these guys since the Durocher years. But this group has a different look to them. Call it young and fearless or whatever ... they don't know anything about the backdown. After getting plunked Arrieta barks at their pitcher and then steals second. Russell bobbles a grounder and then turns a slick DP on the very next play. Just fergodsake keep Fernando Rodney away from any kind of pressure situation.

There was a lot to like ... and don't forget how good Utah is. If it's true that a football team learns more between games one and two than at any other time, we should be okay. Now JH really knows what he has and will get to work. And Jourdan Lewis ... that there is a football player.

I hope MSU coach Mike Cornholio will get over this terrible terrible mistake by ESPN.

There's certainly disconnect between Al's "we want to win this year" comment and last week's fire sale. So how was the fire sale conducted without the consent of Mr. I.? Is there a sharp difference of opinion between father and children? I'd say if they win the series against KC, they could make some moves to shore up the bullpen by trolling the waiver wire. Edwin Jackson and Clayton Richard don't make me droool, but my God, they'd be better than Sean Greene.

I wonder how much searching would be needed to find a Rittenberg tweet blasting somebody for not being authentic. A platform+short memories+somebody who would bitch at a cloud=Twitter gold.

As long as Hackett keeps doing what he's doing, I don't give a damn if he straps a sundial to his wrist.

I have asked for a scouting report on Victor. My nephew is a starting WR/kick returner on that Norco team.

Dusty was arguably the best promo guy in the history of wrestling. To the clueless who are writing some of his obit stories, he was NOT primarily known for the polka dot gimmick. He went along with that grudgingly. He really was the son of a plumber, and the feud with Ric Flair was the wrestling equivalent of the Ali-Frazier rivalry. Rest in peace, Big Dust.

I grew up near South Haven, and when Don Moorhead became the quarterback, that got it started (as an 11-year-old).
Then, two games cinched the deal.
Game #1: The debacle at Columbus where Woody went for two because he couldn't go for three. My old man hit the roof and took the occasion to explain to me why Wayne Woodrow's deed violated all bounds of sportsmanship. Hearing Ufer's outrage on the radio only added fuel to the fire.
Game #2: The Game the following year, which we all know about, and where our hometown boy played a key role.

Saw B.B. twice over the years in two great venues (the State in Kalamazoo and the Egyptian Theater in DeKalb, Ill.). They were both tremendous shows.

Most M thing: On my last night working at a newspaper in Minnesota, I brought in a boom box and played a Bob Ufer casette tape. Instead of being hacked off, that room full of Gopher and Badger fans stopped what they were doing and gathered around my desk to enjoy the show. Ol' Ufe absolutely mesmerized them.

This is mere media arrogance. It doesn't rise to the classic level of Jim Cornette at the Dairy Queen drive-through. That's the gold standard of customer service mishap videos.

It is long past time to fight back against the "heckler's veto" that is such a threat to freedom of expression, especially on college campuses. How sad that the mere announcement that someone wants to give a lecture or speak at a commencement engenders the response of ,"we must not let them speak." How about this for a strategy: if you don't like the speech of someone, try to come up with better speech yourself. But don't attempt to silence them. Recommended reading on this: "Free Speech For Me But Not For Thee," by Nat Hentoff.

I'd love to find a t-shirt with the big letters and the pepper logo. But the Kings' fan store only has one with the tiny reproduction of the closed captioning. Could this be a job for MGoStore?

Swindly Lint. Sounds like something out of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, perhaps the archnemesis of Moist von Lipwig in "Going Postal" and "Making Money."

|34 weeks 1 day ago||The new orthodoxy||
"Political correctness" is morphing into the new orthodoxy. This is a prime (if Onionesque) example.
Why a new song? Simple:
--"Victors" means somebody has to lose. Can't have that.
--"Conquering" conjures up memories of the Crusades or territorial ambition. Can't have that.
--"Heroes" are people who have achieved a certain height or stature, which is demeaning to those "beneath" them. Can't have that.
--"Leaders" is a term of the modern era, and must be replaced by a term that more accurately refers to a postmodern, non-hierarchical scheme of human relationships.
And by all means, get rid of the term "fight song."

#14 was such a hero to me growing up that I'd attempt to imitate his batting stance, right down to the finger wiggling. Ernie was pure class and an immense talent. Getting to see him (and Ronnie and Billy) a few times was such a treat.
