If you make the defense have to respect Denard and the bubble and Tous, etc that puts more pressure on different areas of a defense. But I would guess its pretty immediate. I'm pretty sure if the game is still going on, the espn3 video will start live but you can restart it. Only trick there is starting the live video and restarting while avoiding the score.
|4 years 4 weeks ago||espn3||
Go directly to espn3.com to avoid possibly catching the score on espn.com. If you go to the site while the game is still underway, I think the game will come up live when you click on the link. If you go to the site after the game is over you can click on a 'watch replay' link and pick it up from the beginning.
If this is your first time using espn3 you probably have to identify your cable provider for some reason. When I first used it there was some drop down list to select cable provider. Since I have Comcast I had to log on to my Comcast online account before using espn3. Not sure how this will impact your use of it but I would imagine it would be just one minor hoop to jump through before being able to watch the replay.
This is how I watched the OTs against Illinois. My DVR ended at the end of regulation because I "only" set it to run over the scheduled program time by half an hour. Since I didn't even start watching the game until 8pm or so, by the time I got to espn3 to see the OTs the game was over and I just clicked watch replay and fast forwarded to OT.

|4 years 5 weeks ago||Thoughtful vs. Hostile Responses||
Thank you EVERYONE for your input. However, the people who seem to be attacking me, go bleep yourselves. If you read ALL of my original post I did not claim that we were not in any way responsible for this situation. I simply did not know how all of this works, clearly that is the main crux of the problem and entirely on us.
To be clear, the original tax bill was $375 for the YEAR. Now it is nearly $2600. This will increase our monthly payment from $900 to $1300 a month. I never said we couldn't afford it. I also never said either of us went to Michigan. People who did not attend the University of Michigan are allowed to be fans also you know.
Sorry for my hostile response but I am amazed at the level of hostility and somewhat elitism coming back at me for asking a question. I'm not trying to weasel out of our responsibilities here, just wondering if this is normal and who (clearly us) is at fault.
Thanks again for ALL the input. I am sincerely thankful for all of this information, just a great deal annoyed at the way SOME of it was presented.

I tried asking on their message boards and all I got was, "why is the Big Ten trying to destroy college sports" and "dude, that Demar Dorsey is straight gangsta!"
|4 years 30 weeks ago||Not sure...||
That's what I'm trying to figure out. The article says Dorsey signed his junior college letter of intent, "in case he was not admitted for academic or off-field reasons". Birkett later writes, "If he qualifies academically but is not admitted to Michigan, Dorsey could sign with another Division I school."
This is the first I had seen anything about Dorsey possibly being denied admission for a reason other than academics and was wondering what others think of this.
My guess would be that they wouldn't have offered him a scholarship if they believed he wouldn't be admitted for any reason other than academics.
|4 years 30 weeks ago||Admissions||
The article suggests that its possible Dorsey could be denied admission for academic or off field issues. Is there really any legitimacy to the chance that he could be denied admission even if his academics are in order?

On the issue of minutes and depth, Maize N Brew did a nice break down on the differences between this year and last year in terms of minutes played and overall depth.

triple shot of captain and a beer to go along with my typically sunny disposition (can somebody claim to be drunk while using the phrase 'typically sunny disposition' coherently? discuss...) but even I don't think they actually WILL get in. I think there are definitely plenty of quality wins available on the remaining schedule, but from the way the season has played out so far its hard to imagine them getting the necessary wins.
what really bugged me today was thinking about how different the season would look right now if they had kept on top of NW and UW. oh well, tomorrow is another day.
|4 years 47 weeks ago||I think its a little of both||
My guess is that the Committee would have viewed the UCLA win last year as a good top 50 rpi neutral court win (UCLA 33 rpi at end of the season) and probably the human element may have seeped into their minds knowing that UCLA was coming off of 3 straight final fours and had built up a reputation as a top flight program under Ben Howland. Just my opinion.
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Great post and break down||
Another way to look at it is through the current rpi numbers, from realtimerpi.com (http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpi_188_Men.html)
Michigan's remaining schedule has 7 games (2 with Minnesota and Iowa, one each with Illinois, Penn State, and Northwestern) against teams currently ranked 60 or lower in the rpi and 6 games (2 with MSU and Wisconsin and one each with Purdue and OSU) against top 50 teams.
In my opinion Michigan cannot afford any more bad (outside of the rpi top 100) losses and needs another 3-4 quality (rpi top 50) wins. Remarkably, the Wolverines have a 2-1 record against the rpi top 50 (wins over UConn and OSU, loss at Kansas) despite 3 rpi 100+ losses (BC, at Utah, at Indiana).
If Michigan can win 6-7 of the games against rpi 60+ opponents and go at least 3-3 against the remaining rpi top 50 opponents this would equal, at least, a 12-6 conference record with 5 rpi top 50 wins, and an 18-11 overall regular season record. This would be a fairly similar resume as last year going into the Big Ten Tourney(18-12 regular season, 9-9 conference, 6 rpi top 50 wins).
As was mentioned earlier, the bubble is different year to year, but I think Michigan would have a great case if the above scenario plays out. This would give Michigan a resume that would compare favorably against any other bubble team and a resume that shows improvement through out the year (all bad losses being in the first month of the season, increasing number of quality wins during the final 3 months of the season)
This is a tall order but not unrealistic based on how this season has played out so far. The most difficult part in my opinion is finding 3 wins in the remaining rpi top 50 games. The most likely wins, I think, are against the John Leuer-less Wisconsin Badgers. After that they would still need one win out of: at OSU, at PU, and 2 with MSU, difficult but doable.

That excerpt reminds me of one of the great thrills of my childhood. I attended the Michigan Football Camp before my senior year of high school, would have been the summer of '97, and none other than Bo Schembechler spoke to us. The theme of his speech to us was of the importance of blocking and tackling and how if his teams did those two things well they would be successful. As a Michigan fan all of my life this was an amazing experience. Not just that I got to hear Bo speak, but to hear and feel his passion for the game and those fundamentals.
Its threads like this and the great memories they stir up that help me get through the long offseason.

I don't disagree that there is an internal issue with Michigan not keeping records that it requires itself to keep. But that is different than not keeping records as required by the NCAA. How many of the people who read that column on espn.com would have the knowledge that the practice logs were required by the school as opposed to the NCAA? I'm willing to bet that most people who read that bit make the assumption that the NCAA required those logs and that Michigan didn't keep them and that this could very well mean that Michigan was consciously trying to break NCAA rules.
|5 years 4 weeks ago||Thanks for missing the point||
Thanks for missing the point and resorting to name calling, I'm glad we can all handle this like mature adults. If you have anything to add to the discussion about the inaccuracy of Forde's article implying that the practice logs that weren't kept were required by the NCAA then please comment away.

|5 years 21 weeks ago||Here is the point as I see||
Here is the point as I see it. This is about bad journalism. It's not about crying from the roof tops that big, bad ESPN has an anti-Michigan bias or anything like that.
ESPN reports that player X says that the family values of coach A have eroded under coach B and makes a talking point out of it. Despite the fact that player X has no credibility on the subject of family values under coach A because player X never played for coach A.
Maybe I'm nuts for caring, maybe it's stupid in the grand scheme of things, but this is just another example to me of why main stream media is being replaced by blogs: because main stream media gets it wrong and/or focuses on what drives ratings/page hits/subscriptions/etc more than facts.
This, while not as important, isn't that different than political talking heads taking things out of context. People on both sides of the political spectrum make millions and have thousands of followers in large part due to their mis-characterization of what they would call facts. I guess it just really ticks me off when those with such a large platform (Rush Limbaugh, ESPN, etc) abuse it by not giving the whole story or by flat out twisting the story (lying) to further their careers.

Look, I'm a fan of US soccer and excited to see if they can give Spain a match but to suggest that a win over Egypt and subsequent advancement in the tournament thanks to Brazil pasting Italy should silence the "critics" is just absurd.
Does this mean the guy can't coach? Of course not, but it's another example of the "us against the world" mentality being expressed in a way that just sounds stupid.
Not trying to be a wet blanket, but since I have seen approximately no soccer from this tournament, I've got no other frame of reference to comment on this tournament run.

P.S.S. Can someone please clue me in on the Frobozz joke?

How do I send a question to the mailbag and for the sake of efficiency, a key virtue of all members of the Michigan Workers' Congress I'm sure, the question is:
What were the differences that led to Michigan's defense sucking and Auburn's still being respectable under very similar circumstances (DC new to the program, awful offense)?
I've thought part of it may be the SEC offenses being fairly mediocre this year and more depth of quality Big Ten offenses, the conflicting philosophies of Schafer and RR, and also that the entire UM staff was new and unfamiliar with the players where as at Auburn only the coordinators were new.

I should have done a better job of explaining myself as to why I chose a 16 team field. I think of it as a model like the college basketball tournament, auto bids to conference champs thereby giving every team a chance at the start of the season and including the small schools and small conferences and the at large bids as a way to include teams that didn't win their conference that are legit contenders. Since there are 11 conferences in D-1 a 16 team field seemed like a logical conclusion, plus 5 at large bids ought to cover legit contenders each year.
Also, Pitt and Georgia didn't make it in my playoff proposal, they were at large contenders with Georgia Tech as the last team in along with Texas, Texas Tech, Ohio State and Alabama as the other at large bids. I'm not saying it's the perfect way, just the way I would do it if it were up to me.
|6 years 1 week ago||bowl system||
I get your point. I guess what I was trying to say is that I think the "integrity of the bowl system" argument is based on the notion that the games all have some great meaning, which they do to the individual programs that get to participate. Under this plan, the bowl games remain intact and just as many teams get to participate in them.
As I mentioned in the diary post, I much prefer the argument over the last few bubble teams considered (and were not ultimately given bids) than the argument over which 2 teams deserve a shot after the regular season is over. You say Oregon and State are better than Pitt, so be it. I didn't give it a ton of thought but it is a worthy topic. In the end, my last team in was Georgia Tech and Pitt, Oregon, or State weren't really close by comparison.

I would be more than happy to do this if you have any idea how I would go about burning a DVD off our DVR.

I also DVR'ed it and look forward to many joyful repeats. I'm still trying to keep my expectations grounded based on the early results but it's just so damn exciting having legit expectations again.

Does anyone else see similarities between Threet's year and Navarre's first year (3 or 4 games or whatever) when he played for the injured Henson? I think Threet is a guy who could be ok to pretty good (9-3 and win a January bowl in Florida good) with time to develop.
However, Threet is physically a pro style, drop back passer who will likely get surpassed next year by one of the freshmen based on their skills more ideally suiting the offense, in my opinion.

because I'm ready to crush some buckeyes!!!
To me, speeches like that are what make football great. It is a metaphor for life. Things don't always go your way, not everything has a happy ending, sometimes things get hard, but what separates the great from the ordinary, the successful from the failures, is who decides to stay and keep working and who decides to quit.
None of these Michigan seniors would have seen their careers ending in this fashion, but they stayed, they worked, and they laid the foundation for the future and when Michigan is great again it will because they started the building process, they stayed and are champions as men for it.
