Good to put this behind us…

Good to put this behind us and move on. Will be interesting to see how our players respond. Hopefully it’s by making it rain some confetti. Winning the BTT seems like an appropriate middle finger.

Howard didn’t do us or himself any favors. I *do* think the MD incident factored in. He needs to learn his lesson period. Wasn’t good for the team. Wisconsin’s response is bull but not surprising. They “won.” If they were going to avoid all fault I’d have like to see at least one assistant get a game. But it’s not the Michigan way to slap people—literally or figuratively. This probably wasn’t the time to flex but I sure am wondering when we are going to keep letting our standards seemingly be leveraged against us without any visible balance on the other side. At some point I’d like ‘this is Michigan’ to also mean that we operate in our strength, wealth, and influence as well as our moral values.

I appreciate your work. It…

I appreciate your work. It is not only one of the things I love about this blog, but my alma mater as well. Whether we always get it “right” or not, we aren’t afraid to address the tough topics with the skill, intelligence, and open mind like the Leaders and Best we are. I think you walked that line very well. Bravo. Hopefully one day you won’t have to walk as tight of a rope, and yet another where it’s not necessary. Either way, I appreciate it and much of the discussion on a difficult topic. This is also part of why Juwan CANNOT react that way (and still be head coach at Michigan). We’re talking about everything but how we lost a game that seemed winnable until the wheels fell off.

Here is an e-beverage of…

Here is an e-beverage of your choice! Thank you for your logic. I generally avoid these debates for precisely what you so deftly pointed out: EZ has not articulated his specific position as it relates to the facts of this specific scenario (and opinions derived therefrom).
I’d bet those Black friends he grew up with don’t quite feel how he thinks they feel lol. Certainly not for the reasons he suggests. I’d imagine Gard thinks similarly to him which makes sense. Also might result in a collar grab, slap, or something else.

I mean really, where does one derive the notion that they have the authority, right, place to school, direct, lecture, or otherwise interfere with a whole grown ass man? Let alone one who is not subordinate in some way? Or…to tell other people what they should and should not discuss and/or how they should experience something—especially something they have not experienced?

I am a Black dude and your…

I am a Black dude and your comments, while perhaps intended to be in “good faith” as you stated, miss the mark by a mile. You began with your mind made up and are looking to be proven otherwise—despite not only never being in the situation. But also dismissing—without exploring—how it could be different.

Hell yes it is different. First and foremost because another Black dude probably wouldn’t have done that shit in the first place. Take it how you will, but that is EXACTLY the kind of bs White dudes like him do—especially to people like Juwan. He should have been smart enough to not take the bait as far as he did. Because then here come tone deaf comments and op eds like this. The conversation is about Juwan’s clearly too far actions and nothing else. Especially when the White person goes from big bad ready to fight to calling the lawyers and police clutching pearls.

You can either let them get away with it. Or make that ass whooping one they’ll never forget. If it was unconscious or not intended like that then maybe they will think before the next time they do something similar.
One of my law school professors wrote an interesting scholarly article regarding interactions with police by race and gender. Including a good deal of intersectional research with racial identity, male ego etc. I don’t intend to go back and forth with you lol. Have whatever opinion you want. But to act like you cannot conceptually imagine something that permeates all of society like your physical and racial identity—lol really?

You don’t think that interaction is experienced and judged differently if one of the coaches was a woman? Height? Howard being the new coach on the block? Big man on campus? Pro player? Etc etc. I’d bet a lot of that factored into Gard’s reactions too. We’re just not talking about that. And since Juwan went too far we won’t get that opportunity. Par for the course in my eyes. History has shown me that Juwan would have had to been 100% above reproach and Gard absolutely ridiculous for the light to be on the White guy. I cannot recall a public event where it was any different. We know this. But not everyone decides that taking the aggressions/micro aggressions or whatever is worth not slapping the offender.

*stands up and claps*…

*stands up and claps* ???BRAVO! Well said. I feel good not that we are winning but also how we are winning.

This also comes at a time where my observations on the world writ large are running a similar arithmetic. Great to be validated. Words and deeds lining up still matter. Integrity matters. Being a good steward of traditional values and striving to be the best version of yourself to the benefit of your family and community—being a Michigan Man ??STILL MATTERS, and is also a path to success.

These are my sentiments too…

These are my sentiments too. I’m not scared of Luke either. But I think a Day-led OSU isn’t as strong as Fickell and definitely not Meyer or Tressel.

Lol. Way to dodge the…

Lol. Way to dodge the elephant in the room re populations. Black males are also over represented as a percentage of total population as players in college and the NFL. Which funny enough, probably makes us actually underrated on staffs given our participation.

This is why I love Michigan…

This is why I love Michigan. Our pregame tailgate in Indy included everything from the Great Professor Ralph Williams Shakespeare, Locke, Hobbes, cognac vs brandy, the sunk cost fallacy, Jesus and of course football. This takes the cake! Great read. I’ve had a budding interest in military tactics.

That was pretty cool. Lots…

That was pretty cool. Lots of information to process within a very short amount of time. It takes me about the same amount of time if not longer to decide whether I want grilled onions or raw onions at 5 guys lol.

For someone actually reading…

For someone actually reading what you wrote for comprehension rather than to respond, it is very easy to understand what you were saying. There also doesn’t seem to be anything shocking for a logical person. People who have been shitted on, literally enslaved and been fighting for their rights nonstop for hundreds of years might feel differently than people who have enjoyed all rights and privileges. GASP! Lol.

There is no point in trying to explain something to someone who cannot realize that. Just like me being active in High School playing sports and clubs vs someone who got teased and didn’t have many friends.

Thank you for your PSA. But…

Thank you for your PSA. But there are certain talking points that certain networks continuously push in their news cycle. And I know when I hear them. Fox News being one of them.

You did a great service…

You did a great service today and held it down for the culture. It is clear that some people just did not or could not read the actual words you wrote. The only reason I didn’t yell Fox News BINGO is because nobody said Antifa. Whomever actually had an open mind learned something from you.

Whoa whoa whoa lol. What …

Whoa whoa whoa lol. What “African Americans” came here after slavery was abolished? Let alone 10s of thousands.

I don’t even know where to start. I need you to explain this to me with receipts.

I think you should use…

I think you should use whatever device you used to post this and Google what Kaep has done (or Bing or whatever verb for using a search engine).

You are grossly uninformed. Brother Kaepernick has done A LOT. Google is your friend. I won’t do your homework. If you care enough to comment on the man and quest his contributions, then look them up.

I don’t know how someone…

I don’t know how someone could be Black in America and not know Lift Every Voice and sing. You are who my last comment was directed at. Well you and the OP. The vast majority of us had heard of Juneteenth. It’s celebrated to various degrees depending on how “woke” you are. Lol. Hard numbers.

I do not know why I am still…

I do not know why I am still surprised at how...let’s say unfamiliar many White people are with their fellow Black Americans. If you are unfamiliar with Lift Every Voice and Sing then there is NO WAY you have engaged with your Black friends in Black spaces IF you have any. Watch ANY “Black” televised event. Go to any kind of formal anything in the Black community. Lol. You wonder if Black people even know the song. Go home and take your meds.

Stop thinking things didn’t exist because YOU never heard of them. That’s Columbusing af. I rarely log in and comment but hot damn some of you are obtuse as hell. Thank you to the intelligent people who renew my faith in Michigan. Because some of this ‘down in front’ crowd is making my head hurt.

I don’t need to research how or when the song was created or sang. I’m Black, 37, from Detroit, and a Michigan grad. We have sang that song at just about every event I can think of as long as I can remember. Perhaps you’d be outraged to know that there is a Black Celeb at Michigan aka Black Graduation too. Or maybe you think the black graduates at Michigan don’t all know about it because you’ve never heard of it lol.

The truth of the matter is that in this country, many people have not been embraced by dominant culture. They have developed their own subcultures. Black people have their own spaces and things because for so long a lot of America has refused to accept us into theirs. Clutching your pearls and being mad about that and wanting to scream one America now—showing/feigning ignorance to that TRUTH makes you look like a dolt or a liar. Some of you are really mad that the people who—through law, violence, discrimination, etc—were forcefully prevented from being part of America writ large have our own customs? I can’t smh. We ARE America. Just as much if not even more than many of you. Been here longer and gave more for this country than a LOT of groups. Was the first to die in the American Revolution and have shed blood and given our lives in EVERY conflict since—disproportionately so but came home to second class treatment and discrimination after every single battle for “freedom.” Even denied the GI Bill. Yet many still think it is YOUR country or act  surprised when we have different customs lol. Can you breathe with your head THAT far up your ass?

Michigan was the only school…

Michigan was the only school I applied to for undergrad.

But I spent a few years in AB. And even more in STL. Great city. Met my wife there. WuLaw 2011 JD, 2012 LLM. Go Bears!

Lol. This has been a staple…

Lol. This has been a staple at just about EVERY HBCU. They almost certainly stole this from Southern. They have one of if not thee top HBCU band.

Smh. Columbusing its finest.

What a great post. Hopefully…

What a great post. Hopefully you come back and answer more questions when you have time.

Lol. You are not worth…

Lol. You are not worth debating against. There are several dog whistles here. “NBA players are the lowest common denominator of society?” Do tell why that is? I can think of rapists, murderers, pedophiles, companies who knowingly produce dangerous products for profit, abusers, drunk drivers etc etc.

You also do not seem to know much (or anything) about taxes OR how NBA players (and other professional athletes) are currently taxed. I wouldn’t be surprised if they paid LESS under what I understand to be Bernie’s plan. But your choice of words and people tell me all I need to know about you. I won’t waste my energy trying to educate someone so far gone.

I cannot with y’all. This is…

I cannot with y’all. This is some next level cognitive dissonance dumb ass fuckery. People rioting in the streets committing crimes and fucking up shit ARE being thugs first of all.

I don’t even feel like responding to the rest of what you’re saying. It’s stupid. And pussy. Stop trying to explain away and what about dumb bullshit.

You sound about as dumb as folks who think that if they don’t go get an STD test it will go away. No the fuck it won’t. You are absolutely not Black or Brown thinking that dumbass shit. We didn’t invent racism. And I assure you that I get absolutely TIRED of talking about it. More importantly, we get tired of living it. Then people like you on my favorite blog for my alma mater say absolutely idiotic shit that I would think Michigan fans are too smart to think or say. Or I get followed around a store. Or the valet chases me down a street accusing me of stealing the keys to MY 100k convertible another valet just pulled up for me. Foh. I can’t just stop being black. Shit gets tiring. I don’t even have the patience to educate and unpack all that’s wrong with your...dude foh

Y’all cannot be serious. I…

Y’all cannot be serious. I rarely actually login and comment. But just in case the tone deaf create a chorus... “Thug” is ABSOLUTELY a coded way of saying the N Word. Full stop.

Richard Sherman did not make it up. Many of you just didn’t know that until he said it. We’ve BEEN knowing. Thinking things didn’t exist before you knew about them is.... Columbus and tone deaf af. No it’s not some overly sensitive pc pitchfork blah blah blah it’s real. Many folks are just to Candy ass to admit it.

And I can’t believe Beilien... BRUH! He’s out of there. He said it. It’s kinda hard to take it back. Is what it is. And to the poster who said something about a Freudian slip...sorry but YUP. There are hundreds of other words in the English lexicon he could have chosen that First of all, probably more accurately described what was happening on the floor. It’s not even like they were playing like the Bad Boy Pistons. Second, hundreds of other words that could/should have come to mind to describe basketball. Third, he should know better and not knowing better is a sign that maybe he’s not in the right position. It is what it is.

edit: John is the most likely person to actually have meant “slug.” And also doesn’t seem to have a negative bone in his body. But he hasn’t been there long enough to build the benefit of the doubt and he kind of is a super duper old white man. I’d be willing to bet it isn’t the most natural to relate to his locker room.

And if you think that Stanford graduate Richard Sherman is a “thug” in the Webster definition, then you have NEVER met a thug in your life, don’t know what the word means, or...you want to REALLY call him an n-word but won’t. Because...a multi-millionaire graduate of one of the world’s finest institutions is not violent or criminal. He hasn’t ever even been any type of “street” at all that could lead to some kind of confusion. Keep it real. ??‍♂️

I wish McCaffery was in. I…

I wish McCaffery was in. I think he was about to show us something. And he had nothing to lose. I think he’d have come out cocky and slinging it

This part all day. Shea is…

This part all day. Shea is either injured or off. Either way, give Dylan a shot. Then he got in and they didn’t let him throw or keep it or roll him out when the kid has wheels. It seems like the O was/is in a very familiar shell.

Looked to me like Jim took…

Looked to me like Jim took over. Running every first down and several times in OT to exactly nobody’s surprise was not #speedinspace

Lol. I don’t know why it’s…

Lol. I don’t know why it’s still funny when people cannot seem to separate issues. The officiating this game does seem to leave something desired. The worst of it was the negated touchdown. That doesn’t mean Michigan’s ball security doesn’t need work etc etc. And the OP didn’t blame the officiating for our performance. In fact; he literally said the officiating wouldn’t matter if we weren’t a turnover machine. But light your torches and grab your pitchforks I guess

Ehhh I don’t know. I don’t…

Ehhh I don’t know. I don’t watch the NFL and though I’ve heard of the family, I haven’t really seen them play. I’m not necessarily calling for him over Shea...but what I have seen of him makes me curious and want to see more. He’s taller, his ball looks to have more zip, faster, and seems to have a little more “juice” or “it” factor. People say Shea has it, i just don’t see it. Maybe it’s just confidence. Shea holds onto the ball too long, has an average arm, and just doesn’t “feel” like the guy for whatever reason—although people keep saying it.

I don’t care if Ben Mason was playing QB, I think we are all ready to see it being played at an elite level. Especially with Harbaugh or at least what we expected from him. OSU made a third string guy look like the next coming. Late season Jake Rudock was the only QB since Florida game Henne that I felt could win a championship based on actual play—not potential.

Truth is we struggled against MTSU. And we had difficulties in all three phases. Only the offense is new. We’ll see where the season goes. But we haven’t seen a Belein in March improvement from football since 1997. Since then we have kind of been paper tigers. Including 2006. It would be nice to see us blow up when it counts for once.

I can understand how some…

I can understand how some points scored may not reflect on how a particular unit performed: I.e a special teams TD doesn’t speak to how the D performed.

But the what ifs about poor plays that actually happened, and good plays that never were doesn’t make sense. Michigan has been what if for at least a decade and a half. It’s time for us to stop making excuses and explaining things away. The sky isn’t falling, but I don’t think anyone should be expecting a CFP run based on what we saw yesterday against MTSU. I want us to have nice things, but I can also see that we don’t seem to have enough of them or use them like others seem to. Just win baby.

This is true. I’m not a…

This is true. I’m not a coach but is this really even a thing? It never seems to happen. The only time I can recall something like that was Carr’s last bowl game when he seemed to run the offense we all wished would have been run all year—injuries excepted.

People calling folks raising…

People calling folks raising valid concerns “freaking out” is uncharitable. The point that we matched one of our 3 best scoring totals from last year is a terrible point to suggest we are improving: it was MTSU. We are SUPPOSED to score 60 on them with backups playing the second half.

I think there are absolutely valid concerns. And while optimism is anyone’s choice, so are pessimism and realism. I did not see anything that gave me confidence we will beat OSU this year. Sure, it’s game one in a new offense, but I also saw some of the same things we’ve been seeing.

One of the most annoying things for me is that Shea holds the ball entirely too long. Being in his 3rd college offense probably doesn’t help. His ball also doesn’t arrive quickly so his reads should probably be that much quicker if we are going to get the passing game going against better competition. From my eyes and memory, several of his passes looked like they’d have been broken up or picked against better competition. While the OC has to scheme guys open and wideouts have to do their jobs, the QB has to deliver the ball on time. He can’t expect the receivers to stay hand wavingly wide open for long. Let alone expect his protection to hold for the extra 2 seconds it seems to take him to decide to actually throw the ball after he sees a guy open.

Let me just add a few…

Let me just add a few comments to my previous statement:

1. When I said I usually expect more from the MGoCommunity...but perhaps that faith is misplaced...

I graduated from Michigan. I am Black. I was there when the White frats wouldn’t let any black people in under the guise of the non-Greek rules—but, let in white non Greek students and let us in when we rolled with the football team. Or the frat member who literally came outside and said “can’t y’all see we don’t want y’all here?!” to me and all of the other black people lined up against the fence. And the other white students and members remain silent while we were treated like that.

I had White classmates openly question my credentials, or diminish my presence on campus as affirmative action—despite the fact that I was kicking their ass in the same class.

It goes on and on. I say that to say, many of those same students or someone similarly situated are on this board. So...why do I expect more?

2. This discussion is proof that Harbaugh giving some sort of focus on African Americans’ contributions to WWII and DDay would have been a much needed and worthwhile endeavor given the racial makeup of the team. Most of this thread has been (presumably White) people finding different ways to basically say Blacks didn’t do anything or what they did do on DDay and WWII was insignificant.

Tell the White troops, wounded and dying that the Black nurse who saved their limbs, lives, held their hands during their last breaths that those contributions were insignificant. Tell the bombers who specifically requested that the red tailed planes escort them so they could get back home to their families that they didn’t do anything. Tell the troops on the eastern front dying in the snow, being decimated by the German panzers that the 761st tank Battalion wasn’t needed or was unnecessary as they pushed further and further. To the extent that a lot of the enlisted AAs were support staff, tell a hungry soldier the cook wasn’t necessary.

To this day, those soldiers and their families have been fighting for recognition. Initially, their inclusion was purposely derailed until they were needed—like the airmen and 761st. Patton himself saying he doubted their ability. Given disgraced White commanders, denied rank, being stripped of their rank and demoted when they joined integrated units.

THROUGH ALL OF THAT, those soldiers and support people fought and died just the same. Doing their part for a country they loved but didn’t love them back. Saving, fighting with, dying with, people who spit in their faces until the bullets started flying. And resumed the spitting once it ended. These comments are disgusting because it’s the same thing. Now nearly all of those people are deceased. Their stories, valor, service forever buried. The people who remember are gone too. And now we are left with people like Salvatore whomever you are, who wouldn’t have been able to deal with half of what they did questioning their service. Using facts that the military has since admitted was skewed and incomplete.

Again, I implore you and anyone else to watch one of those documentaries. Listen to those soldiers—black and white—about the contributions African Americans made. Those who fought with AND against them. Then tell me those soldiers—combat and support—were insignificant. I can say one thing, those people were better than me. Because I would have said F this country and F Patton, and whomever else wanted me to go trudge through the snow and the mud with crappy equipment and supplies being maimed, killed, and attacked—all for people like Salvatorre to say I didn’t do squat anyway. Maaaaan...

I know this thread is dead,…

I know this thread is dead, but i logged in specifically to address my disgust at what this thread devloved into. I usually expect the MGo community to be “woke” and intelligent. (Which, as a Michigan alum is kind of lol now that I think about it) This thread is proof that it is even MORE important to shed light on African Americans’ contributions to WWII and DDay. I mean...hot damn.

I am African American, and the team going to Normandy made me research AAs contributions to the war and DDay. Less than 30 minutes of reaearch will teach you that while, yes, the racism of that time dictated our involvement IT ALSO substantially affected the CREDIT African Americans received for their contributions. It ia truly disgusting and unfortunately this thread is proof that it worked. Salvatorre or whomever the poster was derailing the thread with talk of Russia would do well to spend some time specifically researching that aspect.

I hate feeling like its my job to educate people and do the research they can do themselves. And truthfully, I don’t feel like it. Its usually pointless as very few minds will change. But there are a few good documentaries on this subject. “A Distant Shore” is a good one. Usually given inferior equipment, inferior supplies, some of the most dangerous missions when they did see combat, and set up to fail, they fought and died for this country. Medals were denied. Stories buried and lost. Heroism and gallantry ignored or mis-credited. And this thread is living proof of that shame.

Before you dismiss those contributions, check out one of the documentaries on YouTube at least. Hear the stories directly from the Black men who fought—and the White men who fought with them. Perhaps the next time a discussion like this begins you’ll have a different perspective. The 761st tank division has great interviews just like the airmen. And STILL to this day, those guys are shit on. MgoShame.

Thanks Yost

Been following the MGo several times daily since 06 when I graduated UM, finally joined in 2011 to comment on something I don't remember, but didn't have enough points to post this. I rarely actually log in.

NCAA bans Satellite Camps via social media...

I don't have enough points to post this so perhaps someone can inform the MGO community for me.

Espn reports that the NCAA has banned the promotion of satellite camps via social media and direct recruit communications. This is ridiculous.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12880007/ncaa-prohibits-…

This. EVERYONE knows that you

This. EVERYONE knows that you always watch the extra guy. He is either going to punch you or distract you so the other guy can punch you. Well everyone except the guy in this video anyway. Jones could have also been clearing space between him and the kid who got punched in case the kid swung first too.

Here is a tip MGoCommunity: if any kind of dispute breaks out don't let anyone you do not know to be an ally within an arm and a half reach of you. Heed above advice and watch for the sucker punch. If you are trying to deescalate the situation then keep your guard up at all times until you are clear. Especially when walking away. I just saved you from getting knocked out. This also works for the knockout game too except then you will be approached relatively quickly. You're welcome.

Thank you I was not. I was

Thank you I was not. I was trying to say that you do not know how the other person feels or is going to react so that is why you should be careful. The person could be off their meds, had a terrible day, high off drugs, generally violent, or someone who has told themselves that the next person who does something to them is going to pay.

What I did not so eloquently communicate is that initially when things like this started in Ann Arbor I perceived the threat to be the same as it is in Detroit. In Detroit if someone is talking shit it is generally because they are ready to do SOMETHING. If they were not then they would not waste their time and energy arguing. What are they prepared to do? I don't know. Maybe it's sucker punch me, jump me, stab me, go to the car and come back and shoot me. Folks get beat down or killed for small and big things alike. So as soon as you reach a certain level of shit talk (threat or voice raising or insult) I better drop you before you drop me. I soon realized that the vast majority of these tough guys are not really about to do anything. There actually was no serious threat. So I adjusted my perception and thus my reaction. And since I knew that because they were not a real threat my reaction would be perceived as unreasonable I began to ignore them. York has not been around long enough to learn that. Not to mention unlike punching or even jumping someone who understands that subculture this kid is going to call the police. Not even worth the trouble with either the person who may shoot me or the guy who doesn't even think it is fightin' time but is going to call the police. Unless it is... But it is almost always not worth it because you never know what is going to happen.

Say what you want but it is what it is

Not everyone has the same ideas and values that you have. There is a real world out here and real stuff happens. If you are stupid enough to engage in an altercation with a complete stranger then you open yourself up to all of the possible reactions. Which is specifically why I don't get into disputes with strangers. And particularly reflecting on my time in A2: when I realized that the kids starting stuff didn't fully realize that things could really get physical in real life without warning I found it pointless to engage with them on that level. Kind of like you.

A lot of you must talk shit at bars...

I think this should be allowed to play out, but a lot of you sound like the guys I went to Michigan with. Talk a bunch of shit to someone and then are surprised when they kick your ass. Now you are a victim. I don't know where York is from but I am from Detroit. If I am talking shit to someone or vice versa... Hell even if I am not, I do not let a stranger get too close to me. But ESPECIALLY if I was just talking shit. In my experience in A2 folks talk shit and then think there is supposed to be an argument and maybe some pushing MAYBE some wrestling around. The kid who got punched also learned a pretty good lesson. Not that I support York's punch. I don't know the entire situation. Video looks bad. Just offering a different perspective. Where I am from you don't talk shit if you are not ready to go. And dude leaned in and said something to Jones. Not sure what. But then had his hands in his pocket like it was all good. Some stuff is not to be let slide. I let a LOT of stuff slide in Ann Arbor that I could not have let slide in Detroit lest I want to be a target because folks thought I was soft. But people thinking this is the knockout game or something like that don't have the right set of lenses on. The knockout game set up doesn't look like that. Looks like someone was surprised shit got real to me. And for that reason, because you can get your jaw broken or killed you should be careful who you start shit with. Their levels of provocation may be different than yours and you can't bitch that their medium is your high.

Yup. Sold.

Translation: I know next to nothing about golf but put up $5 for the digital copy.  Guys like me are those that might actually win.. wouldn't that be sweet!

I don't know why this continues to mystify

I haven't actually logged into MGoBlog in over 3 years though I read it several times each day.  But I reset my password just to comment on this.  Disclaimer: No, I do not specifically know Hoke's recruiting policy.  However, based on all comments and the goings-on the past several years it seems really quite simple:  Once a recruit commits, Michigan tells other kids at that position the inn is full.  That has seemed clear with a number of positions.  If you want to take visits, Michigan considers your spot open.  You can still be a recruit, but they are also going to recruit your position.

Now, this is a different situation for your average 5 star than a 3 star. Why? Common sense, 5 star is harder to replace.  So if he wants to recommit versus us signing a high 3, we'll probably take him since we likley won't have another 5 star chomping at the bit that we wouldn't have already taken (except maybe at QB).  By the time the 3 star goes on his visits and decides to recommit, we'll probably have another 3 star or better already committed. Or maybe we're in on someone we consider more talented and they are now the 1A priority.  Because remember, we were telling other guys that the inn was full because the decommit was committed.  So when the spot opens back up, they'll likely take it.  Chances are if there were multiple 5 stars at a position, we'd take them both so the 'inn is full" probably wouldn't be an issue.  IMO, it's that simple.  3 and 4 star guys are generally easier to replace than a 5 star guy.  So if they want to take visits, chances are their spot will not have been filled by an equally or more talented guy.  And if it is, then perhaps we'll make room rather than turn down highly rated talent: i.e. what was that 2012 when we took all of those linebackers?

I see your general point

I see your general point though I don't know if I'd go as far as calling it an Asian school.  I had this conversation with a lady friend of mine who went to Mizzou for undergrad and we looked up their numbers.  81.4% White currently.  Back in 02/03 it was more like 87%.  Now THAT is a "White school"!

I would have thought their were more Asians on campus at Michigan than 11%, but perhaps it seems that way because no other group even comes close to that number.  Not to mention, there are 12.6% non-resident Aliens and I would guess that at least a few of those are of Asian decent as well.  When the next largest minority group is 4.2%, that certainly affects the perception.  By contrast, Mizzou currently has 7.2% African Americans and only 2% Asians.  The girl I was talking to is Black and she was surprised it was only 7.2%.  She said it felt like there were tons of Black people.  Maybe that is attributed to them being the largest nonwhite group like the Asians are at Michigan.

@Happy Shooter and BlueintheFace

Happy Shooter has obviously had a negative experience at best tangentially related to my point.  I think Blueintheface started to explain it but let me just break it down:

1.  People in this thread have taken exception to the author of the article calling Michigan a "White school."

2.  I thought it was funny that people would think that Michigan is anything other than a White school, seeing as how over 60% of the student body is White and the mainstream culture, campus and activities are all  geared towards things most likely to interest a White person.

3.  I realize that the connotation of calling a school a "white" school may offend some people, but the reality is the reality.  Everyone else at Michigan is a minority by a large margin, with Asians making up the largest group with 11% of the student body.  And if we are specifically talking about African Americans, I'm too lazy to look up Ann Arbor, but I'd imagine that the communities surrounding the school are 90+% White until you get 10 minutes down Packard or out toward Ypsi.

IMO, it doesn't take away from the efforts of the University or the students and student groups therein.  For me, going to Michigan was a HUGE culture shock.  And I love Michigan because through it all I felt that Michigan loved me back.  My White counterparts weren't always as welcoming as I would have liked, but the world isn't a cuddly friendly place.  Not to mention, more than the difference in pigmentation was the difference in culture.  I'm sure seeing me in Jordans, Girbauds and big jewelry was just as much of a shock for some of the students as it was for me to see everyone with Starbucks cups, Uggs, Northface jackets, thong sandals and cargo pants.  As I grew as a person and a member of the community, my experience changed.  I look in my closet and literally lol at some of the things I used to wear.  But it was all part of my learning process and I love Ann Arbor and Michigan for helping and allowing me to grow.  IMO, calling Michigan a White school should offend the non-white students more than the White students/alums.  I say that only because it effectively leaves us out of the equation.  But then again, a person of the majority culture may not realize just how dominant their culture is because they don't think of their culture as the other.  Imagine living in mexicantown as a White person.  For a minority, that is how Ann Arbor and Michigan are if they didn't grow up in majority culture except much larger.   I agree that the terms "majority institution" or "predominately white school" are more PC, but really, they all mean the same thing as "white school."

I've enjoyed the discussion.  One thing I love about MGoBlog is the intelligence of the community and the ability to have all kinds of discussions.  As I said before, I've been reading for years, just never commented.

That's an interesting

That's an interesting perspective, although I'd trade 11% plus however much of the 12.6% non resident aliens that the Asians have enrolled over 4.2% any day.  I'm sure Ann Arbor kicks super major ass on average for a Caucasian person.  I was just giving things from my eyes.  The fact is that in America, it is a White person's world and the rest of us are trying to find our way in it.  You may have china town, mexicantown, Dearborn or whatever ethnic/racial subculture but when you walk into corporate or leave your neighborhood you join the majority culture.  It is what it is.  (all far away from the original point of just saying that Michigan is indeed a predominately White University, albeit the best one.  Though I am admittedly biased.)
