"Of course some S&C coaches are significantly better than others." Given what evidence? What S&C coach can you point to making a material difference over another?
I talked about it in my post. Running an entire football program is a massive endeavor with a lot of things that can go wrong. A lot of that also involves staying up on the latest trends, being a master tactician, being a great recruiter, just plain luck, etc. Yes, fine details may make a small difference, but S&C isn't nearly as complex. Plenty of average dudes get strong and fast just following a decent routine on a weightlifting website. Probably the most useful aspect of an S&C coach isn't actually having some great wealth of knowledge but making an exercise and diet plan that makes it easy for players to stick to it and to make sure they follow through with it. A lot of people want to think there's some magic formula that's some shortcut to getting big in the gym, and there's not.

On the umhoops recap, he did address benching them. He said it's a moot point because "in the last couple of minutes, you don’t care which way it’s going to go." That seems...odd. Closing out the half is usually seen as something pretty important. I don't get why the end of the half doesn't matter.

I don't follow recruiting much. Why isn't he just taking an official? Has he used them all up already?
|1 day 1 hour ago||That hypertrophy bit is||
That hypertrophy bit is totally irrelevant though. That's talking about beginners. Guys a couple years into college football programs are definitely not beginners. Even coming out of high school they aren't total beginners.

Of course they've improved. Everyone's older and still training. We got pushed around on the line with a bunch of underclassmen? Wow. Who would have expected that?

Yeah, with all of our returning experience it's hard not to be really optimistic about this year. It would seem with all the competition at QB and Harbs teaching them, the winner has to be at least decent.

That was basically my post in one sentence lol.
|1 day 4 hours ago||Of course there could be||
Of course there could be someone employed who is bad, but how is someone who doesn't know about weightlifting going to get a job at a major college program? Yeah, sure if the team just jumped rope 5 minutes a day, no one would make games. Therefore, what? Wellman is a terrible S&C coach? Wellman was doing exactly the thing you're talking about with Tolbert.
We've had this dumb debate with every new S&C coach. The new guy is a weightlifting God/genius (one isn't enough), and the old guy didn't know anything. That has happened with Barwis and Wellman and now with Tolbert.
Again, it's not that having a good S&C coach isn't important, it's that anyone at this level is going to be good. Also, there's no real secret to weightlifting. Yes, there are a lot of things you can tweak and optimize and all that, but if you've got a an S&C coach worth a damn, he's going to have 98% of what you need. Football changes because of philosophy and rules and a bunch of other stuff, so having a coach who hasn't fallen behind in the game is important, but our bodies are still the same. It's not like some coach is going to come in and do, I don't know, pyramid training, and all of a sudden the team is twice as strong and fast as any other in the nation.
Whatever difference there is between S&C coaches is made totally insignificant in how the players are taught the actual game, recruiting, time management in games, etc.

The problem is what coach doesn't have that 2 foul policy?
Has there ever been an mgoquestion at a presser asked about it? It's naive to think he would change because of that but it's so maddening. It was maddening even when NC did the same against Duke when they last played. Nc took out their best player with four fouls for a good chunk of the second half.
|1 day 22 hours ago||Well, assuming everything||
Well, assuming everything else would have stayed the same with players leaving and getting injured, they still would have been nowhere near great, but they definitely would be much better and it would have been a lot of fun seeing him make that play for us instead of OKC.

Well, usually logos don't work because they're not letters...
I don't think we should wear them all the time, but they're not that bad. And more importantly, they're authentic. They're actual throwbacks. Some NFL teams have horrific throwback jerseys, but for one game out of the year, I think it's cool.
The '89 throwbacks haven't been a regular thing, have they? We should definitely wear them once a year.

Speaking of teacher connections, one of my high school English teachers graduated with Madonna. Easy to forget the age of celebrities, but it's weird seeing Madonna the sex symbol and then her classmate, a gray-haired woman well into middle age. Amazing what you can do with botox, photoshopping, and an army of people whose job is to make you look good.

Yeah. You're just not at intellectual of, say, a Matt Millen. Sorry.

Does "top suitor" mean most attractive school?
Is South Carolina really a top suitor in Texas? I'd take out about half of the SEC and substitute A&M, Baylor, and TCU. Baylor and TCU aren't historically good (though TCU might have been pretty good before IIRC), but they're good now with good facilities and they're in-state.
Stewart Mandel occasionally ranks programs in tiers too. This is what he did in 2012: http://www.si.com/more-sports/2012/07/11/kings-barons-knights-peasants-m...
He has 13 teams in the top tier and Michigan is in it. Hard to argue with it.

We'll see. Harbaugh did seem to have Oregon's number when he was at Stanford. However, I wouldn't bet on Harbaugh doing what Carr did to Cooper (or Tressel to Carr). I'll be happy with a .500 record or better against Meyer over the next 10 years, assuming he's there that long.
|4 days 1 hour ago||Yeah, seeing Wiscy and Oregon||
Yeah, seeing Wiscy and Oregon there in the 20 year timeframe was surprising.
FSU started heading downhill even before Bowden was forced out. That's why he was forced out. Having said that, they never dropped off THAT much. I wonder what their worst record was during that down period.
I don't wanna be fair to ND, but to be fair to ND, they do almost always play one of the toughest schedules. Scheduling is a big factor in a lot of these. The B1G has been really down, so that's why OSU is so high on there recently. Granted, those Bowden FSU teams were certainly elite, but it still helped playing in the ACC.
|4 days 6 hours ago||"Unfortunately, their message||
"Unfortunately, their message doesn't always resonate with the modern player." LOL what? College football is definitely not any dirtier than it used to be. You think hostesses and money changing hands is new? Players getting away with things they shouldn't? You know how 'roided up a lot of teams were in the past?
|4 days 6 hours ago||Could/should they poach Utah?||
Could/should they poach Utah? They're better than any of the other programs mentioned here and they don't have any longstanding affiliation with the Pac-12. Obviously BYU would be a bigger rival than anyone in the Pac-12 as well.

Your comment is mostly true. It's amazing a state with as much talent as Ohio doesn't even have an MSU, but Florida has WAY more talent overall than Ohio.
|4 days 6 hours ago||Brian and others usually||
Brian and others usually focus on how bad Rutgers is and how the TV revenue isn't all it's cracked up to be, but Stewart Mandel wrote a good article about how the expansion seemed necessary because of the shrinking B1G recruiting footprint.

Crime is a part of normal society too. Does that mean there's nothing wrong with crime and we shouldn't do anything to prevent it?

Apparently the guy you replied to got banned or at least the comment taken down. I saw it on the app and had to come to reply. It was an insane comment to make. Prostitution is one of the prime arenas for human trafficking. I think a lot of people, mostly men, convince themselves that it's all on the up and up because they wanna do it and the women don't obviously look like they're being coerced or enslaved or scared into compliance.
