The phrase is "intents and purposes" unless you're making some joke that I'm unaware of.

3 years 24 weeks ago At least you're acknowledging

At least you're acknowledging the casual sexism, even if you're attempting to dismiss it. Looks like the "feminists" are slowly winning you over.

Well, it's on Good Morning America, so hopefully this is going to move the needle a bit, at least to clarify what the sideline staff actually did and did not do.

6 years 45 weeks ago Brandon's Corporate Culture

I'll say it again--Michigan was proud to get the former CEO of a pizza company whose immediate ad campaign under new leadership was 'Our product is the worst in the country, but we're working on it.."

8 years 2 weeks ago Gravity's Rainbow

Honestly, GR is the paradigmatic Pynchon novel, plus the banana breakfast scene is one of the greatest in 20th century lit, let alone his own oeuvre.

8 years 2 weeks ago Criteria for this list...

Seems like most of the texts on the list are there for their style, and I'm not sure the pure aesthetic style of the Bible speaks even to many of the people who read it regularly.

8 years 2 weeks ago No offense, but...

I've never read a single article on this blog and thought "wow, that reminds me of DFW," even though I really enjoy the writing. More like Vonnegut, honestly, with the insight, playfulness, sharp changes in subject.

No one will ever sound like DFW again, and 1) that's good and 2) I really wish he were still alive and writing. Or just alive, not to be selfish.

8 years 14 weeks ago World Football Leagues

The point made about (non-American) football leagues is true only to a certain point. For example, the Premiere League does not have a playoff, yet clubs work hard to finish in the top four so they qualify for the European Champions League, which is a tournament. Most (all?) football clubs compete in many tournaments in addition to the competing in the league in which they are based--ask Wayne Rooney if he'd rather win another Premiere League title with Man U or win the World Cup (or ask any footballer a similar question), and he'll say World Cup, a tournament.

This has me thinking, why not have the teams who finish the regular season at #1 & #2 play in a bowl for the NCAA title right after the regular season, and THEN start a BCS championship tournament? Best of both worlds--clear regular season champion, then a tournament, plus the possibility (likelihood?) that different teams will win each, thus allowing the arguments about what team is actually *best* to continue forever?

8 years 25 weeks ago Agreed, but,,,

why re-post her picture here?

Just wanted to applaud the David Foster Wallace reference in the title...new to the site, absolutely love it.
