Let me preface this by saying that I do think that Michigan's defense was not a top 10 unit last year. However, I also think they were better than 40.
That is because, the one issue that I have always found with this line of reasoning is that it is a classic chicken-egg problem. Are the offenses in the PAC 12 that much better, or are their defenses just that much worse? Yes, there are great offenses in the PAC, but OSU and Wiscy both had great offenses too. Just look at the bowl games. In those games, 4 teams (OSU twice, MSU, Rutgers, and Nebraska) scored 40+ points; 2 (PSU, Wiscy) scored 30+; and Iowa scored 28. You don't need to have a great QB to have a great offense, even though it certainly helps. Wisconsin's system, for instance, does not need a first round QB to be great. Basing everything off of one offensive position and perception of offenses by conference can lead to problems with confirmation bias. In this line of thought the offenses are great or bad, therefore, the defenses are better or worse than they appear; however, it does not take into account whether the offenses are better or worse than they appear based on the defenses they face.

I'll say what I always say on these types of threads. If he wants to eat better, he can take out a FAFSA Loan like the majority of the rest of us did. Also, it's funny how none of the non-revenue athletes ever complain about the expenses they are allotted under the NCAA rules

Marcus Ray. He was awesome in college, just crushing people. And the fact that he's been such an amazing alum to the program just makes me wish he had had a more productive NFL career even more.

Title IX gets in the way of that. The reason they have roster limits is because they need to know the number of male and female students that will be on scholarship. Would have to change that law before you can change the scholarship limits.

Let's not re-write history here, I haven't seen a single source saying Harbaugh told him to take a hike. As I recall, he decommitted because of the coaching change, which is perfectly understandable. Maybe he didn't like Harbaugh's 2 QBs per class or something, we can't know for sure. Unless you have evidence or a reliable source, shouldn't assume Harbaugh didn't want him
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Exactly. Who hasn't seen||
Exactly. Who hasn't seen football players get all the free drinks they want at Ricks and Skeeps (provided by the bar)? Players are given free stuff on and around campus because they're celebrities, and that is true at every major (and likely minor) football school in the country. There are a lot of shady things that other schools do that (I hope) we don't, but this is not one of those things.

No, it just means that they, as seniors, were better than him, as a sophomore. It does not say anything about how good he will be as a senior, nor how high his ceiling is compared to theirs. It is likely that they were more polished blockers and route runners than him. Having the physical tools, as Michigan fans should know after the past 4-7 years, is not sufficient to be a good football player, the technique is just as, if not more, important. The coaches probably saw a kid will great measurables (and, from meeting with him, enough drive to improve) that could be molded into a better TE than the two guys ahead of him last year. For an example from our team last year: your argument is akin to saying that just because Miller started over Kugler, Kugler will never be as good of a Center as Miller was last year. Although that may end up being the case, it is indisputable that Kugler has better physical tools and a higher ceiling than Miller, and that is what the coaches are likely looking at in offering a kid like this.

Well, as one of those "white people," I will say that Haifa Falafel is the best middle eastern food I've had based on price and taste (comparing to Chicago and Atlanta mainly). Also, what does that even mean? Yeah, I loved Mister Spots when I was there, but who didn't? I wasn't aware that someone's race was a determinative factor in his/her taste buds.

I think the bigger thing is being against the current climate of censorship going on. I personally think Chris Kyle was a racist and a proven liar, but the movie was still great mainly because it was neither pro nor anti war. It both showed the view of many of the people actually fighting and it showed the toll it takes on many of them. In other words, a great, nuanced movie

Why does everyone forget about Patrick Ewing when discussing awesome college/pro players. That guy tore it up at Geargetown
|8 weeks 13 hours ago||I'm going to reserve any||
I'm going to reserve any judgment on the running game. Yes, there weren't many holes, but run blocking is so dependent on having all 5 guys on the O-line working in tandem, so splitting up the guys on the line makes a huge impact. I think it would be more helpful to look at each guy individually, because if there's a player at each spot on the line who was successfully and consistently performing his assignments, then there's good reason to believe that a unit of those 5 could be successful.

|8 weeks 5 days ago||Even if he is just average,||
Even if he is just average, that is a much higher floor than we had before he decided to come to Michigan. Fact is, with a good to great defense, a solid O-line, and a solid corps of RBs (all of which I think are reasonable to expect, given the end of last year and the new coaches) you don't need a world beater at QB to be a very good team. Top 10, no, but top 25 isn't out of the question, just look at Sparty the past few years to see proof.

There are non scholarship guys listed at other positions. The post even makes note of the number of non scholarship guys at WR. Therefore, I'd assume this was all that was reported.

|9 weeks 6 days ago||I want to upvote this 100||
I want to upvote this 100 times. Well said. Also, look at a guy like Saban. Not only has he earned Alabama (and the SEC as a whole) money in the form of making it to and winning national championships, but I'd also bet that Alabama has received more money in donations since he started winning.
Also applications to Alabama from out-of-state students have skyrocketed. This means 2 things: (1) more money in the form of out of state tuition; and (2) a larger pool of students to select from, and selectivity is a factor in university ranking. This means that, by winning, he has actually improved the university as a whole. I know Michigan is a much better school than Alabama, but the point holds that many students, even high achieving ones, will make choices, in part, based on extracurricular activities such as sports. The value of such things is difficult to quantify, but does exist.

In addition to what lucky socks said, I'm going to assume he knows that he won't ever be an NFL caliber center, so why further destroy his body when he could instead focus on things that will contribute more to success in his future endeavors. You can find a dark meaning in anything, but doing so without anything to go on is just cynical

I don't want to dive into politics here, but it was brought up in the column and I'm drunk. In the column quoted on the CHL it said: "basic human right to minimum wage." Minimum wage is not a human right. Human rights consist of the liberties necessary to live your life without any abrogation of the rights of others. To extend the term to minimum wage requirements is to make "human rights" a meaningless expression.
