4 years 47 weeks ago  I am pleased with a combo of

I am pleased with a combo of a senior version of Horford, and Ricky Doyle. You are leaving Max Bielfeldt out of the equation at the 4; He will be a 4th year junior at that point, and a player who I think will be an able contributor and a nice compliment to Donnal.

I actually think 2014 shapes up nicely. Coach B will have a very experienced and talented group. I will approach this under the assumption that McGary and GRIII are gone and Irvin is still around

2014

Senior:

Jon Horford

Juniors:

Max Bielfeldt

Caris Levert

Nik Stauskas

Spike Albrecht

Sophomores:

Derrick Walton

Zak Irvin

Mark Donnal

Freshman:

Ricky Doyle and who knows who.

4 years 47 weeks ago I thought for sure he would

I thought for sure he would go to Arkansas but maybe he didn't want to play with his distant cousins. Anyway this is clearly a case of natural selection going awry.

Seems like the kid just knows how to play football. Hopefully he's a bigger version of James Ross. Wouldn't that be special.

4 years 47 weeks ago Corey Sanders looks like he

Corey Sanders looks like he could play on one of the And1 teams with Spike Albrecht. Corey could be Skip to my Lou and of course Spike would be THE PROFESSOR!

4 years 47 weeks ago Per his umhoops.com

Per his umhoops.com interview, Chatman has been compared to Jalen Rose.  We can only hope. Chatman is a lefty, and reminds me a little of Caris LeVert; similar type of game, also got a little Calbert Cheaney game with those lefty pull up J's. Chatman would be an excellent addition to the M hoops squad.

4 years 47 weeks ago Doyle is not a flyer at all.

Doyle is not a flyer at all. Nonsense. The kid is very good. Doyle has a nice shot and it is fundementally sound, he has a post game, and has a nice frame. Doyle is 6'9'' now and may not be done growing. His father is 6'11'', played for the Pistgns a minute, had a long pro career overseas, and his taught his son well on the intricacies of the basketballs. Doyle is probably a 4 year player and could conceivably be a 3 year starter. Great get by Beilein.

4 years 47 weeks ago Better than the interview

Better than the interview with Tim Hardaway on the ESPN podcast, was the interview with KU coach Bill Self. Self made a comment about feeling much better now than he did the last two minutes of the Michigan game, and later Self gave a scouting report of Trey Burke that was very complimentary.

Michigan football, since the days of Chad Henne has been a little unstable, leading to the inability to redshirt quarterbacks on a consistent basis. Although we would all like Shane Morris to redshirt, the likelihood of the opportunity presenting itself is slight. Since the recruitment of David Cone, only Russell Bellomy was afforded the opportunity to redshirt his freshman season. With Bellomy's knee injury I don't think the opportunity will be presented to Shane Morris.

4 years 47 weeks ago I would be surprised to see

I would be surprised to see Shane Morris redshirt in 2013. Morris will be the second best healthy quarterback on the roster when he arrives in the summer, therefore I think the coaches will get him ready to play, and will play him early on in the season.
As Brady Hoke likes to say, what's best for the team is usually best for the individual, and in this case what's best for the team will be Shane Morris on the field getting experience in the case of an unfortunate injury to Devin Gardner

4 years 47 weeks ago Peppers is probably the best

Peppers is probably the best offense of recruit, the best defensive recruit, and the best special-teams recruit, of this upcoming class of Wolverines. It is going to be hard to win the Heisman Trophy as a freshman if he doesn't play special teams and offense, as well as defense.

Here is an interesting article detailing Jeremy Gallon's struggles with academics both in high school and college and his perseverance overcoming them.

"

"I struggled," said Gallon, a redshirt junior wide receiver for the Wolverines. "Things just seemed a little hard for me at times so I gave up. I didn't have the self-esteem that other students had. I wasn't motivated. I couldn't relate.

"My mind was not on school, period."

4 years 51 weeks ago In a positive way, this

In a positive way, this season could be huge transition years for both the offense and the defense. Offensively , of course, Al Borges will finally begin to implement his West Coast offense that was so fun to watch at San Diego State.
The sea change on defense will be Mattison believing this is the season he can generate a pass rush with four. If this is true the defense is going to be better than last season. I think this suggests Mattison believes he has the experience in the system, and the personnel to run the defense the way he wants to run it. Buckle up!

4 years 51 weeks ago Is Bellomy's timeline similar

4 years 51 weeks ago Here's the skinny from

Here's the skinny from Mgoblue:

"father, Joe, played linebacker at Notre Dame (1981-84), while uncle, Mike, played football and hockey at Notre Dame... is brother of Penn State junior/sophomore defensive end Brad Bars ... grandparents attended Michigan, while grandfather, Douglas Eggleston, played football at U-M."

http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/blake_bars_810565.html

Another interesting angle is the family lived in Michigan until 2003.

Here is a snippet from a Tom VH Mgoblog interview with Blake Bars back in June of 2011:

TOM: Ok, and to talk more specifically about Michigan how familiar are you with the program?

BLAKE: We lived in Trenton [Michigan] for around 12 years. I went to a Lloyd Carr camp in Wyandotte once, but I can't really tell you much more than that, I was pretty young. We did go up to Michigan last year and took a brief visit. We have relatives in Ann Arbor and we wanted to look around the stadium. We're excited to go back up and meet the coaches and go on a tour.

TOM: Does Michigan have any advantage with all this since you have family there and you've lived there before?

BLAKE: I think my Aunt who lives in Ann Arbor is a pretty good recruiter. She always says that if I come to Michigan she'll have special things for me. She'll bake me cookies and cook for me. I like the fact that my family is there, and my mom's uncle actually played for Michigan, but I'm not sure how much it will factor in.

Wow thanks for posting. What a difference a year makes Tilman looks much bigger and mature in this video. You can see why Michigan and other schools would have major interest in this kid he is going to be playing college basketball at a very high level. Between his growth spurt and being injured much of his junior season, it is easy to see why he is an under the radar recruit at the moment.

4 years 51 weeks ago Willie Mitchell would be far

Willie Mitchell would be far down the list of best players to come out of Pershing, going back to the days of Spencer Haywood and Ralph Simpson on to the present.

It would be nice to get a recruit out of the PSL in general and Pershing in particular. Sparty has done nicely at Pershing, with the likes of Steve Smith, and more recently Derrick Nix and Keith Appling. Break the Izzo pipeline yall.

4 years 51 weeks ago Hard to tell from a couple

Hard to tell from a couple videos, but the kid definitely has talent. I like that he looked very comfortable catching the ball close to the basket, and he knew what to do with it. Kid is a scorer and all teams need scorers. I bet he is tough in a game of 21.

Thinking back to the end of the regular season, it seemed M missed an exorbitant amount of layups and put backs, this is the type of kid who makes those shots because he is comfortable around the basket and knows how to convert close up attempts.

Congratulations Andrew. The kid seems like the perfect replacement for Eso Akunne. With the way Coach B loses players to the NBA this kid has a virtual four-year scholarship

4 years 51 weeks ago If MSU  makes it to the FF

If MSU  makes it to the FF next season, it is going to be due in a large part to Gary Harris. Harris battled shoulder issues all season and still was regarded as one of the best frosh in the country. Harris is one of those players, like Trey Burke, who makes the players around him better.

In M's win against the Spartans, Izzo designed a play to get Harris an open shot in the left corner, but Valentine went the wrong way and blew the play up. One frosh playing like a frosh, the other waiting in the corner welcoming the pressure of a game winning shot on the road. As for me, I am glad Valentine went the wrong way and cut Appling's drive off, because I wanted no part of Gary Harris with an open look with the game on the line.

4 years 51 weeks ago To me Nix's biggest liability

To me Nix's biggest liability was pick and roll D. Anybody who got past MSU's perimeter D had an excellent opportunity for an uncontested layup. Aaron Craft absolutely ripped Nix a new one on dribble pentetration resulting in layup after layup.

Herm, with all due respect, Zimmerman's 10th grade highlight video is very impressive.

I do know where you are coming from though. You probably remember when Bill Russell starred for those National Champion, San Francisco squads, or Lew Alcindor with UCLA, or even the Big Dipper, Wilt Chamberlin, with Kansas back in the day. Sure Zimmerman's 10th grade video can't compare with 3 of the best to ever play the game, but what can we truly expect? Bill Russell if you remember, was very limited offensively, with only a couple rudimentary offensive skills. while Wilt Chamberlain like to dunk, it was one of his specialties. Lew Alcindor was the only one of these 3 all time greats to have a highly skilled offensive game upon arriving to college and it resulted it pretty much never losing a game.

You've seen Zimmerman's 10th grade, 7',  highlights, Here are a few more of Withey 4* and Cody Zeller 5* to compare him with. I will also try to find some film of your contemporaries, Russell, Alcindor, and Chamberlain from their college days!!!!

Excellent read, thank you.

McGary, Horford, and Morgan, are all best served in the high post in John Beilein's offense, where things get interesting for me, is the 4 position next season, and going forward. GRIII is almost certain to start at the 4 again next season, but I think he will get considerable run at the 3, or more responsibility at the 4. Ideally, I think Beilein would like to have Bielfeldt and Donnal backing up the 4; each bringing the ability to rebound as well as the capability to step out to 3 point range and knock down shots. If this is the case, the log jam at Center is not so pronounced. Basically there will be 3 Centers on the roster next season and 3 Stretch 4's.

I think you are undervaluing Caris LeVert. LeVert will probably end up being the best shot creator on the team. LeVert biggest issue this year, IMO, was lack of strength, once he gets stronger, he's going to be a bitch to deal with. Beilein has said on more than one occasion, something to the effect, "Caris can get wherever he wants on the court". Caris is going to be a focal point of the offense going forward. LeVert is tall, quick, smart, can get his shot off, passes well, has a mid range game, and benefited from extended playing time as a freshman. His future is really bright

5 years 2 weeks ago Albrecht and LeVert figure to

Albrecht and LeVert figure to be two of the primary ballhandlers next season, and by the numbers had better assist:turnover ratio than Trey Burke as a freshman.

Albrecht was almost 2:1 with 28 assists and 15 TO's

LeVert was even better, 2.5:1 with 25 assists and 10 TO's

Trey will be greatly missed in all areas, but I think ball security will probably be very good again next season.

It is amazing to watch the PG situation from last spring; Nobody to replace Trey if he bolted to the NBA, to the situation for next season; 3 viable alternatives to run PG in Caris LeVert, Spike Albrecht, and Derrick Walton.

5 years 3 weeks ago One interesting adjustment

One interesting adjustment Bill Self made in OT, was playing a sorta two man zone with Young and Withey in an attempt to keep Withey around the basket.
When McGary went to the high post in OT, Young would guard McGary, while Withey would hang out down low and keep an eye on GRIII in the corner. If GRIII moved out to the perimeter, Young and Withey would switch, and Withey would stay in the paint with McGary. Strategy didn't work, and McGary continued to be a royal pain in the ass for Kansas

EDIT: Kevin Young not Elijah Johnson playing 2 man zone with Withey in OT

Withey comparison. McGary dominated Withey, especially in the 2nd half. I think Withey made one shot in the 2nd half and hardly got any rebounds. McGary was pushing Withey farther and farther away from the basket as the game moved along. Offensively McGary put in a shot off the glass with his right hand with Withey guarding him, then in OT, Stauskas hit McGary in the post with M down a basket, McGary faced up and buried a 7 foot baseline jumper over Withey to put M up a point. Bottom line: Michigan's Bigs aren't very good post players.

McGary especially, and Horford show promise in the low post, but they just aren't very good right now. Both are probably at least a year away from being proficient offensive players in the low post. Just look at our buddy's in EL, it's taken Nix and Payne 3 years to begin to live up to potential.

Beilein prefers to have McGary and Morgan work out of the high post and I can't say that I blame him. McGary's best plays in the paint come from offensive rebounds or hard drives from the high post. Genuine nice low post moves are few and far between, and at this point, I have little confidence when the M Bigs are attempting to score with low post moves.

I would rather see THJ flash into the low post and make a quick move on a smaller guard, than see Morgan, Horford, or McGary get the ball in the low post.

Was also nice to see Amaker get the best of Steve Alford. I don't have anything against Alford but it is still nice to see his IU ass go down in flames :)

I love the NCAA tourney. Sorry I hurt your feelings.

5 years 5 weeks ago It al starts with defense.

It al starts with defense. According to St. Louis Billikens coach, Jim Crews, 2-0 vs VCU this season, the way to beat VCU: "get stops". VCU can't press if they don't make shots.

Michigan has played well against this type of team in the recent past. M beat Arkansas this year, narrow loss on road to Ark. last season. M also beat Memphis pretty good last season, and destroyed Tennessee 2 years ago.

I think Beilein, with his young team, would much rather play a team like VCU, as opposed to a grind it out, milk every possession, half court oriented defense, Wisconsin like team

I always thought Joe Bolden might end up at Sam. Bolden is a little light right now, but I think he can possibly spell Cam at Sam.

You would think with all the time doctors have to prepare for torn acls, they would have prevented it by now. Total lack of effort by the doctors, and if the patients had any heart at all, they wouldn't even get this injury.

Awesome, I didn't pay any attention to this topic until now. Trey is deserving, but I'm still a little shocked he actually won.

5 years 5 weeks ago If you are coming from south

If you are coming from south of the Palace, it is much easier to get to if you skip the first exit, 81 I think, and hit the first exit north of the Palace and come in from the north. Really easy to do these days with GPS.

5 years 5 weeks ago Booing happens all the time

Booing happens all the time in sports. I guarantee you when Ohio State comes out of the tunnel at the Big House this November they are going to hear some boos.

Lighten up Francis. Are you kidding me? You make it sound like drudgery. These events are fun and it is interesting to see which way the crowd is swayed. I think it will be fun if either M or MSU or both get some Goliath booing at the Palace. Afterwards you hit the bars, meet some neat people from other parts of the USA, and share a few cold ones.

I think Brian is using a roster from the bowl game or maybe from spring of 2012 because many of his weights listed don't correspond with the Mgoblue 2012 football roster.

Brian is however, using the Mgoblue 2013 spring roster as listed on their website. It's a little confusing but I can deal with it.

I am not sure where Brian is getting his numbers, but according to Mgoblue Bolden was 223 last season

No long argument from me. You stated the following as fact, not opinion, what are you basing it on?

Regarding Justice Hayes:

The problem is that he can't break the tackles to have a chance to break out.

That explains it well enough for me; You are pulling it out of your rear.

Is this the same football watching that enabled you to determine Denard would never be a QB because he was on the track team

5 years 5 weeks ago I've been reading the experts

I've been reading the experts on this blog and from I can gather M must be on the bubble. Going to be exciting once again to see if they get in the tourney.
If M doesn't get in, it's because of Coach B's lack of D the last 30 years, coupled with Coach ignorantly refusing to play zone D

Pro tip: if you are constantly getting negged, it's because you constantly come of as a Dickhead

5 years 5 weeks ago The only reason to be shocked

The only reason to be shocked by Kovacs, a 4 year starter at M, and clearly a very good athlete, getting drafted, is buying in to the group think of this blog that Kovacs succeeded because he was white, smart, and gritty. Remove your stereotype blinders, forget Kovacs race, and you will find a very good football player.
