I think what Coach Harbaugh is referring to is that if the revenue athletes become university employees (or even contract employees), room + board + tuition would be viewed as part of their compensation package, and thus be subject to state and federal income tax.
Averaging in-state + out-of-state costs from finaid numbers (27K + 51K), that is about $39K/year in income. Which would be around $5K in federal taxes, and about $1K in state taxes.
Would defer to any MGoAccountants, however. (Just an MGoTurboTaxer...)

There have been a number of articles reporting on the exciting trend of "heat and eat" cuisine in small bistros in Paris. Just like Sysco and US Foods, the French equivalents are providing restaurants from fruits/veggies/meat/seafood up to fully prepared (and frozen) meals that just require boiling water or microwaving.
Would bet most of us wouldn't be able to tell, especially after a 1/2 liter of cheap table wine.

My uncle passed with metastatic something (renal? lung? no one knew) cancer this spring. Hospice was a blessing given his spine metastasis. At least he saw his new granddaughter.

And are on a limited budget, would recommend Weller Special reserve. Sazerac/1792 is coming out with a 90 proof wheat mashbill later this summer for $30ish.
I have cask-strength Makers, but haven't opened it yet. Reviews seem to lean towards not being worth the 50% premium over regular strength.

Actually rocked the surgery shelf (written and oral). Loved surgery...for 3 months. Could never be a surgeon.

I live in Maryland. I pay 8.6% in state and local taxes. I have a very high salary, as does my wife.
Maxing out one's 401k is the only way to reduce our pretax income.
We are not lucky enough to pass through income through a corp, defer bonus income for tax advantages, nor do we make a majority of our income via capital gains.
We can only deduct our home mortgage and property tax, and even that phases out at our income bracket.
And I am NOT going to participate in retirement/life insurance programs to try to shelter pretax income. Given that my will be getting a pension, our future tax liabilities will also probably be pretty high. In addition, losing control of our money for a poor return is not worth any theoretical tax benefits
But thanks for assuming I'm financially ignorant.

I pay around 40% of my income in state, federal taxes.
|24 weeks 2 days ago||Yeah during med school is hard||
You try to live it up to celebrate the end of each unit/rotation.
First thing is to just to put it all down on a spreadsheet. Break it up into categories, how much you are spending for going out/dinner/booze, rent, car, etc.
That was our big eye-opener, how much we spent on food and drink.
Once you become an attending, things (financially) become a lot easier, but would really encourage a bit more financial repression for at least a few years after graduating residency.
|24 weeks 2 days ago||Get into the habit of||
Get into the habit of budgeting NOW.
Doctors are shitty investors, financial planners. And the urge to go out and buy a big house/boat/car will increase as your peer group advances through your careers. All practicing docs have cautionary tales of colleagues who over-extended themselves financially and got to see their personal, professional finances fall apart.
My wife and I had a somewhat similar tale (my folks paid for my tuition (Michigan, Wayne SOM so pretty reasonably priced, but I worked part-time through undergrad for spending money). It took us until PGY3 for me, 2 for her, to start budgeting.
We still try to live like residents as attendings....but this has allowed us to save/invest quite a bit

I love that the US beat Germany IN Germany for the 1st time ever. And the US team looked deadly in the 2nd half.
But are you f-in kidding me that missing Jozy, Howard, Oman, Besler, and Dempsey are equivalent to the talent that Germany was missing?
Muller, Reus, Kroos, Khedira, Hummels, Boateng, Neuer.
|24 weeks 4 days ago||Why shouldn't the men get paid more?||
FIFA will make about $2 billion from just broacast rights to the 2018 World Cup (Mens). Overall, it made $4 billion from the 2014 Cup in Brazil.
The Women's Cup will not generate anything close to that, in either TV rights, viewership, attendance, or sponsor advertising.
