Statistics/algorithms/shmastistics. You don't have that high of a chance to win a game without your only attacking presence, and one of the best defenders in the world (the best IMHO, Kompany has had as good a year excluding a horrific quarterfinal against Argentina). Especially against a healthy German midfield.
People are deluding themselves if they think Dante is as good a defender as Silva. Silva broke up at least one odd-man rush against Columbia, and I don't remember him losing an aerial 50-50 ball.

My Psych 111 class had this big project that counted for like 50% of our grade. Our group consisted of 3 pre-meds...and then magically, we had a 4th member added to our group after all groups were put together. He happened to be the starting running back at the time. This guy's involvement in our group consisted of telling us stories about football while we were trying to research our project at Grad, UGLI, and Taubman.
Said football player wrote nothing, researched nothing, and got the 100% for the project the psychotic premeds put together. He said after finals that the A- he got in Psy helped him keep over a 2.0.

1) Miracle on Ice occurred in 'Murica. Young players + home field advantage = shock the world. WC is in Brazil, and if the Confederations Cup is any indication, Brazil is going to get one gigantic heaping of home cooking from the refs (they have one of the best defenses in the world, do you REALLY have to swallow your whistle too? Spain's midfield got absolutely mugged, multiple legit yellows and fouls not called).
2) It will be a miracle if US qualifies to the knockout round. Germany is one of the favorites to reach the finals. Portugal has THE best player in the world. Ghana, even down a defender, always plays the US tough).
3) US Soccer is improving, a mean bastard who pushes the USMNT players and program are exactly what we need. USMNT consistently finishes top 2 CONCACAF; we need to do better, and to do this, we need to upgrade players.

It's probably the exact same one.
The only "stress fracture" to the back that results in sitting a young athlete is a pars defect. If untreated, can result in an unstable spondylolisthesis. A spinous or transverse process fracture does not effect the structural integrity of the spine; it just hurts like hell. Given the age (healthy bones) without trauma (classically jumping out a window to avoid fire), the fracture will not involve the vertebral body itself.
And yes, I do this for a living (spine physician). Although it hasn't leaked, what Embiid has is what I guessed McGary had, but Mitch may have undergone a fusion procedure.
Embiid returning at all for the tourney is questionable unless the docs are doing serial MRIs to check for decreased T2/STIR intensity on sagittal imaging while imobilizing his spine. And even then, you are opening yourself up for future liability pushing the return to play timeline that aggressively. 6 weeks for an active pars defect minimum, with lots of rehab to regain the core strength you lose while braced.

When I see young athletes, I don't restrict activity for back pain, be it muscle or disc herniations (as long as there isn't weakness in a dermatomal pattern). I DO restrict activity for back pain from an active pars defect, specifically out of sports for 6 weeks, wearing a back brace, otherwise, you can develop instability at that spinal segment that could result in a fusion. Given that Mitch has essentially been held from practice for quite some time, I am inferring that he does not have a simple muscle strain, discogenic pain, but rather something more serious where his docs are sitting him. :/

Would guess because you're not 6'10", and not repetitively extending your lumbar spine backwards while trying to box out or post up, and if you continue to let this go untreated, it can result in spinal instability, weakening of the disc annulus, subsequent disc herniation and/or spondylolisthesis.

I could make a couple educated guesses based on Mitch's symptoms. I know how I would go about treating a patient with his age, activities if he told me he couldn't participate in sport due to his symptoms. However, without knowing Mitch's exat symptoms (all back pain, pain going down the leg, what aggravates his back pain on exam, any weakness in the legs) it would just be idle speculation. Safe to say that this isn't a simple muscle strain, though, given that it would have healed given the timeline.

Provides a lot of entry research positions for motivated undergrads.
Volunteered in a research lab my 2nd summer, applied and received for a student research grant through the American Heart Assocation my 3rd summer, co-authored a paper my 4th summer. Without a doubt helped me into medical school.
Doubtful I would have had the opportunity as an undergrad without the hundreds of millions (at the time) of federal research dollars flowing into the Med School.

No. UConn is rated 50-something in USNWR...that is NOT what the B1G presidents are looking at.
B1G presidents are looking at research $ and AAU membership. And UConn is waay behind most of the B1G schools in that regard.
Sorry. Not ever going to happen.
|41 weeks 6 days ago||UConn is redundant from a||
UConn is redundant from a footprint standpoint.
As you stated above, UConn isn't an AAU school.
Also, they are pretty far down the federal research funding list; 81st. Nebraska is the lowest @ 100-something. UConn MAY be above Indiana, but not sure how the IU-PU mix in Indianapolis is counted. Every other B1G school has more fed research dollars than UConn. UMich tops the list at #3
If we goto 16 school megaconferences, I think somehow peeling off some of the ACC schools (UVa or UNC) would be ideal..

I think the reason why we don't check out of our coverages is because Mattison doesn't trust our secondary. Hence we don't play tight man, safeties in a 2-deep shell, etc. Mmmm...bend but don't break.

This. They did a study of the UC system, looking at the number of administrators who made more than 100K/yr. It has exploded over the last decade, far more than facility renovation, research expenditures, or the decline in state funding. Bloated staffing + captive audience + cheap federally backed funding = costs skyrocketing past the rate of inflation

Sorry, I must have missed the part of Heiko's roundtables with Mattison where coach individually breaks down the performance of each line player on each play, and provides youtube clips of some plays.
Please, next time, can you point these out to me?
Also, have Mattison call me to share his opinion on how he is going to gameplan Braxton Miller.
Sarcasm aside, yes the coaches are better at this, but no, they really don't share their opinions all the time. UFR is great for folks who like to see in minute detail the schemes, and effectiveness of parts of the game.

|43 weeks 5 days ago||UFR-defense will be verah||
UFR-defense will be verah interesting, in that from my hazy, martini & beer-soaked memories of the game, the D-line was generating little to no pressure and there was a surprising amount of yardage for ND rbs.
Howeva, while trolling for schadenfreude, a couple of Domer bloggers mention how the Michigan LBs were sitting a couple yards deeper off the LOS to try to keep crossing routes in front of them and to force Rees to squeeze balls in a 2-deep zone, thus sacrificing some run support.
Would guess, with JMFR back, our ability to generate a rush with 4 will be better, and hopefully, the DT in our nickle will be able to clog up the middle more. Don't think you will see our LBs as deep, either, or have someone like Ross 'spy' Miller.

ND will have the best front 3-4 we face. But their linebackers? The Domer boards have been ripping the lack of mobility of their LBs exposing them to Temple's QB on scrambles. Also encouraging; Nix was getting stonewalled and had to play a LOT of plays, and his primary backup was lost in the preseason due to injury. I think we see a lot more of a vertical game, with play-action and healthy doses of Funchess testing their LBs down the seams.

Nah it isn't as big of a barrier as one may think.
Banks drool at the thought of lending money to physicians (or future physicians). We're a relatively low risk of default, and the thought is we will continue to do business with them in the future. Typically, the loans are offered at below-market rates in hopes of enticing future business out of us.
Aaand, there is always either the US Public Health Corps, or the ROTC programs that will foot your tuition bill for varying degrees of service (primary care + Obgyn in "medically underserved" communities, or 4 years active/8 years reservist military).
It IS expensive, but after 4 years of medschool you are pretty much guaranteed a 40-50K/yr job for 3-7+ years. And if you don't totally F-up, a 6 figure job after that.
The only thing that debt burden does is shunt folks towards specialties rather than primary care.
