I've worked in orthopedics for 8 years and do my best to treat most problems conservatively. This is one where I feel surgery is the best option. Minimal risk, quick recovery, predictable outcomes. You can try anti-inflammatories and/or injection but these probably work 10% of the time. Best of luck! |

Give RR some credit for being classy here. This isn't article about Michigan or his thoughts on the program, but its about his thoughts on a charismatic young man and terrifc athlete we have all had the pleasure watching over the last couple years. There probably is great respect both ways. |

| 29 weeks 2 days ago | Tough to treat |
I am former athletic trainer who used to work college football for 5 years. There isn't much to do other than keep asking the athlete if they're ready. Treating this type of problem on the sidelines is difficult. There isn't a quick fix. An injection can help but usually these are done with ultrasound guidance so as to take extreme care around the nerve. The nerve innervates the small muscles between the bones in the hand so this injury greatly affects grip. Unfortunately time is the best healer here and hopefully Denard is ready this weekend. |

After the dramatic win in the Pigskin Classic in '95, the students made attempts to rush the field. If I remember correctly, the police were a little harsh in their tatics to keep them off the field. Some even got arrested....a friend's brother had to go to court for it and pay a fine. They (the police and the Univeristy) received a lot of backlash from the Daily. Call it a PseudoRush. |

Denard wasn't set to be a return man. He was in a position to block. Same as Wheatley. I concede if he were to return, could add a different look. But don't ask him to do something he isn't accustomed or built to do. |

If Denard were to get injured (fingers crossed) on a typical offense play...... Well, that is football. But on special teams? That's just poor decision making. I remember Tyrone Wheatley being injured on punt return. Hurt his shoulder & wasn't the same the rest of the year. |

As an undergrad I worked with UM hockey one full year. In one game against MSU Richard Keys ran Marty Turco behind the net. It was a malicious hit and totally uncalled for that nearly put Tuco out. Next game against Sparty in in the locker room pregame Red reminded the team of the hit and called out Keys. He told the guys if they got a chance for a hit, take it and make it count. And didn't mind if they got a penalty. Although he didn't want it dirty, but more in the flow of the game. Couldn't have been more than 5 min in and Jason Botterill went at with Keys and laid his ass out! So yeah Red will call it out, but only if provoked and not for a cheap shot. |

| 1 year 25 weeks ago | Consistency |
The problem with the NCAA is there is no consistency. Its so arbitrary and there are no real 'rules' about punishment. Look at how the punishment USC received will vary from that of Ohio. I, for one, believe money plays a huge part in all this. Ohio is a big name school, plays on the major sports network and brings in lots of money. Not to say USC isn't big time, but being on the West Coast I don't think they bring as much attention as Ohio. FWIW, too, vacating wins is the biggest joke of a penalty. Damn right I still say UM hoops made the Final Four in 1993. |

| 1 year 30 weeks ago | In one of the threads |
In one of the threads yesterday I posted this exact same thought.....somehow they will delay the suspension until after the Wisconsin game. This is right out of the Jim Tressel playbook with Tat Gate and the Sugar Bowl. Jim Delaney could have stepped in then and he didn't do it. He's not going to do it now. He cares more about possibly having a 'good game' than what is doing the right thing. The B1G should have a standard rule: you throw a punch, landed or not landed, you're ejected from that game and suspended the next. No appeals. If Mike Martin or Denard Robinson did it the week before playing Ohio, I would feel the same way. Sorry....you screwed up now. Face the consequences. |

I didn't like them. I'm not an old man (at least I don't think 37 is old) but I am a fan of keeping it simple. Keep the uniforms the same year in and year out, like Penn St and Alabama. I want the young men playing the game to concentrate on blocking, tackling, and running the football not looking in the mirror admiring what their throwbacks look like. I used to work in college athletics and I remember a game were the guys were arguing about high socks vs short socks before a game we should have won by a mile. Instead we lost 9-7. I can still hear coach yelling "Socks! Gosh darned socks!". |

Very well put. Now all of you with your finger on the panic button, take a deep breath and step away. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | one up you on that |
JT Floyd makes that tackle on 3rd down when Sparty scores their 2nd TD (I believe) and the D forces MSU to kick a FG the whole 2nd half changes. UM played poorly, didn't execute and, IMO, was poorly coached. That being said, they had chances to win. Hopefully, look at the film, educate, coach, learn and DON'T overreact, they'll come out ready for the 2nd half of the season. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | I agree |
Yes it hurts to lose to MSU. It hurts to lose any game. That being said, I like what this staff and these players are putting together. Having Denard try to run a pro style set is like putting a square peg in a round hole. I'm sure Denard thought about this last year when Hoke was hired. But the young man did something better than I'd say a lot of us would. He put aside the temptation to go to another school where he could put up huge numbers and make himself even more of a superstar. He decided to stay. Stay for his teammates, stay for his education, stay for his love of Michigan. Listen to Bo's Team Speech. he said we won't speak bad about each other, we'll pick each other up. This is what this Team needs now more than ever. Thanks to the OP for the thread. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | Watch the video closely. |
Watch the video closely. Matthews kicks his leg out and hits the Oregon player in the inner right thigh. The Orgeon player then pulls his left leg up and grabs his left knee. Compraing this to what Gholston did is not even close. Both are acts that do not belong in the game of football but the difference is that Gholston did it with the INTENT on injuring Robinson. Gholston should be suspended at least 1 one game, similar to what the Illionois player got a couple of weeks ago when they played Northwestern. |

I'm in agreement. Great honor, nice job and a good win. However....I'll be curious to see what the game film shows. | 1 year 40 weeks ago | Its not as simple as it |
Its not as simple as it sounds to pay players. With Title IX it makes it virtually impossible. If you pay the football player, you have to pay the field hockey player, the member of the crew team, etc. You have to pay them equal as well or the university could lose risk losing federal funding. And how do you decide who gets what? Does the 5 star recruit get more than the 2 star? And what if the 5 star is a bust? Do you decrease his pay? Does the recruit get paid more for going to UM over WMU or CMU? As someone who had to work to pay for school and borrow I feel a scholarship is more than worth it. |

I can say from experience as a former athletic trainer at a DI-AA football program it is very difficult to get football players to wear helmets that are more protective. The athletic trainers and equipment managers are in full support of better helmets......no matter what they look like. Problem is the players go to the coach who goes to the AD or the VP who will almost always back the coach. Its an uphill battle. Hopefully as more research is completed and the concussion institute at BU makes more progress it won't be such a tough hill to climb. |
| 1 year 44 weeks ago | I agree with the above post |
I agree with the above post re: Title IX. You would have to pay all student athletes, male and female, or risk losing federal funding. The complications with paying players are enormous. Could you imagine the recruiting the process? Do schools like UM or OSU pay their players more than say WMU or EMU? Does a five star recruit get paid more than a four star? What if that 5 star kid is a bust? Do you take money away? Its too early in the am for this...... |

I used to work as an athletic trainer for a D-I football program. Current athletes are protected by a university insurance policy for injuries that occur while doing something related to their sport. The university will pay for the diagnostic tests, surgery whether it is on or off campus. The rehab is usually taken care of by the trainers at the school. If the injury happens prior to enrollment or non-sport related (ie drunk and stupid) then the athlete is responsible for the cost of everything. Rehab can be done once the athlete is enrolled. |

Its still a little too early define the Dave Brandon era. Overall, I'd say so far its going well. Think about what he has had to do:1) guide us (at least partly) through the Jihad and the NCAA mess and 2) hire a new football coach. I think UM came out OK with the NCAA and we'll see about the Hoke hire which at least so far has everyone thinking positively. Don Canham was a little out there back in the 70s with his ideas about marketing and promotion. By the end, he was considered one of the most successful and even powerful people in college athletics. Basketball is a team sport and he's building a good team. |
