I was also a senior that same year and my buddy actually ordered Tom Lemmings recruiting journal out of Illinois, which I believed was published for college coaching staffs. (We were crazy Michigan fans and as you stated, there wasn't much information to be had off season.) As far as I know, he was the only guy covering this stuff year round at that time and he had both Amani & Mercury way up on his rankings. However, in the regular papers, there was not talk of ranking or how they rated nationally except that (as you said) they were from out of state and had crazy names. Michigan, I believe had a great recruting class that year under Moeller, but that information was so much harder to come by for the regular fan. When remembering back, it is amazing to see where this process has come and how it has progressed in 20 years. |

Mike has some huge shoes to fill and holes as well. It will be interesting to see how Cardinal Nation embraces him after 16 years with Tony LaRussa and two World Championships. This is a great baseball town and managing the Cardinals is a great job to have if you can get it. |

| 1 year 13 weeks ago | This is CRAZY... |
16 Commits for a recruiting class that won't officially sign letters of intent for another 11 months!!! That is bizarre!!! The fact that 13-14 of them are already 4 Stars and there may be a couple blooming concesus 5 Stars in the group as well is AMAZING. You sure wish this was a year you had 25-26 slots instead of 21-22. If we do take Ty as a 3rd RB and then Levenberry as a 3rd LB, doesn't that leave us too few slots for our remaining needs in the Secondary and Defensive Line? Nonetheless, great work on the part of the Michigan Coaching Staff. I don't know how they are creating the urgency with the recruits to sign, but it is great to see. Keep it going BLUE!!! |

| 1 year 13 weeks ago | The Beast & Future Salary Cap |
I am thrilled that the beast is locked down for the next decade. However, having close to $40 million per year wrapped up in three guys (Suh, Stafford, and Johnson) seems a little fiscally dangerous, no??? Just like the Lions to get good and leave the "high draft pick world" BEFORE they implement the rookie salary cap!!! I LOVE MY LIONS!!! |
| 1 year 14 weeks ago | He still's got skills |
I think Moss still has some skills and has something to give to SanFran. Harbaugh will do his best to get it out of him, the only issue is Alex Smith and the deep ball. I am not sure Smith is the QB who can make it happen. It does address an area of weakness for SF and we will see how he and Vernon Davis pair up. Finally, it does prove that Michael Crabtree is NOT what he thinks he was on draft day or is today. Not the least bit ironic after his ridiculous holdout, and wanting #1 money when drafted #10 in 2009. He is well on his way to the proverbial "scrap-heap" thus far. |

| 1 year 14 weeks ago | 5 Star Recruits |
It would seem that a couple 5 Star recruits would want to be the icing on the cake for what is potentially turning into the strongest recruiting class in the country. If you were a 5-star recruit looking for a little publicity (not that I would recommend that course of action), wouldn't being this recruiting class' cherry or three on top seem beneficial and attractive??? |

Intereing research on your part. Well done!!! I don't think it is a coincidence because I do think that northern schools and the Big Ten have some additional obstacles in the recruiting world. As stated, the number of stars is not the ultimate arbiter, but I think it is a good general indicator for high school talent which is very hard to measure. |

Woodson is accepted as a great player having a great season. The problem is that in Dom Caper's defense he doesn't play a specific position. He roams and is assigned CB as a designation. So when compared to other corners, he doesn't hold up as well. However, for overall impact on defense, he is in the Polamalu realm for sure. |

I understand the concern, but Hoke has little in the defensive cupboard right now. RR had some offensive guys, he just couldn't get them to or didn't want them to stay: Mallet, Arrington, Boren, Manningham. I am okay with the initial heavy emphasis on defense. |

| 2 years 22 weeks ago | We agree and I think Miles |
We agree and I think Miles gets us better recruits for the next several years minimum over Hoke. To your other point I have this question... | 2 years 23 weeks ago | Good points but look how |
Good points but look how MIchigan has fared since Ohio dried up. We can not thrive as a football power if we arent' stealing Ohio's best talent a.k.a. Charles Woodson, away from OSU. Right now, they are unopposed and reaping the benefits. BO, MO, LC, all bled Ohio dry of good talent. I believe Miles will be able to open that back up. RR was not interested in Ohio talent. He was convinced Florida was the primary gold mine. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | My gut and his words honoring |
My gut and his words honoring Bo and his Wolverine ties leads me to believe that he will embrace this challenge 110%. Also, he may be wacky, but he fills a room with his persona and that is so helpful in a recruit's home. I enjoy hearing him talk about Michigan...shoot he even sounds like BO. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | Valid points and I don't |
Valid points and I don't disagree with your premise. However, TCU, BS, and Utah have played in lesser conferences against lesser talent on a week to week basis. USC is screwed because it got nuked by Bush and Carroll and has a brand new coach this season. Texas lost too much talent but I would not be surprised if next year they are right back in the top 10. Notre Dame is ND and well...their Notre Dame. Coaching is important. Hart, and Long were both 3 star recruits so I acknowledge that it is not all about 4-5 star recruits. What I am saying is that over a 20-25 recruit class, the better the recruits the better your team will do in the long run. It is what it is. |

| 2 years 23 weeks ago | regularly or occasionally? I |
regularly or occasionally? I don't just want to beat OSU again, I want to dominate them like they are currently doing to us and like we dide back in the 90s... Nobody in the Big Ten has had the upper hand on OSU this past decade (I just threw up in my mouth while typing that sad fact) |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | We might beat them |
We might beat them occasionally, but not regularly. Look at the Rivals top 10, these are the same teams who are vying for major conference and national championships year after year. Occasionally the outlier gets in, but recruiting is vital to sustained success. RR was getting "his" guys, but they were niche 3 star players. Please show me where my logic is faulty as I will gladly defer if proven incorrect... |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | That would make sense, he |
That would make sense, he followed him to SDSU. Hoke's next stop...the NFL. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | I hear and understand your |
I hear and understand your thinking and it makes sense, but recruiting is too important at this point. RR's 2-3 star recruits could not cut it. We need 4-5 star recruits again and Miles (based on his current performance at LSU) gives us the best chance at that. It would take Hoke years to establish that level of credibility if he ever does and then what??? We won't beat OSU with a 3.2 star recruiting average when they are pulling in annual 3.9 star recruiting classes. |

Seven in a row is bad but when you equate it to the lifespan of your four youngest children, it takes perspective. My second son Jonathan, with all of his vigor for life and passion for football right now has never lived through a Michigan victory (however he was 6 months along in the oven so I guess that counts for "living"). I disagree. There may have been some, but most wanted to. However, his poor handling of existing players with talent and his rules violation are what they are and complicated his stay. Yes the wins and losses mattered, but they were a byproduct of losing what talent was here in the transition that could have helped give him some time to make his changes. He took a scorched earth path and it came back to bite him. |

| 2 years 23 weeks ago | Or conversely... |
DB really Hoked on this crucial decision. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | Miles will be more fun and exciting... |
...which we will need during the next two years of rebuilding. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | no way |
JH will be successful with the 49ers and I hope he is. NFL job with a storied franchise with 5 Super Bowls, one behind the Steelers for most ever...I do not blame the guy for going pro. Michigan could have gone after him in 07 when he was rebuilding Stanford and that was the risk we took. I loved JH back in the 80s when he was stomping over the Cornhuskers in the Fiesta Bowl and predicting wins over OSU (and then delivering) and I wish him the best. The 49ers are now my 2nd Favorite NFL team...GO LIONS!!! |

That is not an easy thing to do...but would be fun to try. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | Not sure I agree |
RichRod came out of his home state of WV where he was worshipped as a football god. Les Miles is an outsider who has been constantly harrassed by SEC football media and has managed to stay ahead of the hounds thus far, even with his peculiar antics. I think Les Miles confidence and knowing what buttons to push via his Michigan background will help him avoid the pitfalls that RR seemed to stumble into. |

middle of the right cheek |

Call him quickly!!! |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | This is too crazy! |
SF now seems to be on the back burner. Miami went with their lame duck coach instead of JH after laying over 7 million on the table to him which he obviously did not accept. Elway says he wants a shat at a JH interview. And in all of this, Michigan and DB quietly say nothing as all of this plays out...I still gotta believe it could happen. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | Situation not so stable... |
There will most likely be a work stoppage/lockout; the salary cap will probably go into affect this coming year according to ESPN and NFL.com; Luck's father is AD at West Virginia and former NFL quarterback so he knows "the deal"; and Luck is just a different kind of cat with patience and willing to bide his time. Mallet on the other hand: talented but impulsive, brash, not yet ready, very similar to how he was at Michigan as a Freshman. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | I hope they write a book or detailed article about all this... |
because it is bazarre and it doesn't look to be getting any clearer. JH took on a 1 win program and made it a national power in 4 years. Why wouldn't he want to do the same for his alma mater? Bazarre!!! |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | Harbaugh loves Michigan... |
...and appreciates what Bo and Michigan gave to him. There is just so much money, prestige, fanfare, money, multiple once-in-a-lifetime coaching jobs, all being laid at his feet after 4 quiet years rebuilding Stanford and even quieter years at San Diego before that. I would be perplexed as well...anyone probably would. |
| 2 years 23 weeks ago | I have to believe... |
there is more going on here that is yet to come out. Luck returns to Stanford; a UM alum who owns the Dolphins offers over 7 million a year and then pulls back so JH can return home to CA where SF might already be out of the picture and now Denver wants to give him a try...very peculiar. |
