I was a walk on for BO my freshman year in AA.  My number, #72.  Maybe I'll send you some DNA or something for Good Luck.

Sagarin Predictor vs Rating

Hey Life, nice set of diaries.  I have actually spent 25 years testing Sagarin's various ranking methods versus the outcomes of the games at the end of the year. While I know Jeff believes his PREDICTOR rankings are the best, I have found year after year, since '85, that his basic RATING column is the best for predicting future games.  Now, I found the basic RATING column is only about 5% better than the PREDICTOR column at predicting games, but that is the difference between a 70% winning percentage ATS and a 65% winning percentage.

Mud Bowl As the name implies, proud UM grad from 84 and a Theta Xi member since 1983. Anyway to get this game live on the internets?
Trust me gsimmons It is the same everywhere. If people actually knew how to complain about how we are building our particle accelerator, they'd bitch about how we are doing it. But they don't. So I can say pretty much anything I want and they go all deer in the headlights. But football. Everyone has played touch football in the back yard. Go long and don't stop. Look like you are going long then stop. 2 greatest plays in all of 9th grade touch football. Thus, they think they know something. Thus they think they can do it better. Sorry to see you go.
Young team Yeah very true. Everyone had us at 2-3 after this game. I'll take 4-1. Am I nuts, or do you go for 2 at the end? You have your foot on their throat. The crowd is dead. I kept thinking 2 pt conversion and go home.
Four the first 4 games last year The average start on the opponents scoring drives was their own 45 yards line. They do have the play by play pdfs at mgoblue if someone wants to calculate it for the whole season.
Stephen Hopkins Wahoo, that doesn't make you a nerd. I makes you a well bred individual with excellent taste. A man who "has never seen nor heard nor smelled an issue so dangerous it couldn't be talked about!" Ok, now I am off to the necessary. You'd think Congress would have its own.
Think Rivals is bad Try the B10 forum at the Detroit News website. I posted there for the first time a week before the 2007 FB season. I posted my reasons for believing we might lose to App State that weekend. I was expecting some discussion of my reasoning. Yeah right. 2 weeks of name calling and hacking attempts of my email address. It got worse after they did lose!!! Well, I gave my log in info to my Engineering students. They had fun for 6 months till they were banned after creating a java bot to respond to any post with nonsense, 24 hours a day. God, I love Engineering students.
7 wins in 25 years Some one want to remind that O$U fat ass that over the last 25 years of the 20th century, O$U only won 7 games. That's right. 7-17-1 from 1976 to 2000. 3 coaches at UM, 3 at O$U, and they went 30%. Tre$$ie has to win 11 of the next 17 to do to us what we already did to them. Tre$$ie has to win 4 of the next 5 to do to us what we did to Cooper. Check the record boys. We were first to win 4 in a row, first to win 5 in a row and first to win 9 in a row. They still have to win 5 more to take that away. And we still taught them that dumb shit OHIO script.
Magnus Sorry Magnus, but 4 of Steven's first 9 throws, the throws up to the second scoring drive, were over the middle.  That's 45%.  I would say early on, you are wrong.  Also, all the wide open receivers on long routes don't mean a thing if the QB isn't protected.  Take a look at how long the plays take to develop in the 2nd and 3rd qtr.  Sorry, again, gotta say I disagree.
For the second time I am not trying to equal Steven Threet's talent level to King's talent level. Back when RR was hired everyone said "What are we going to do with Mallett??" RR said, "I can work with anyone." Shawn King was interviewed and he said "RR can work with anyone." Can anyone tell me that RR and CM aren't trying to West Virginiaize this offense without the right players?? Every game we hear square players in round holes. I'm asking, where is the file to square off them holes a little until next year. Cuz folks, Threet is likely the QB next year as well. I would just like to see the offense that works a little more, and the offense that clearly needs different players a little less. Even if RRs ego has to take a hit.
I'm not saying that I am saying that Shawn King said RR could mold the spread to fit the personal he has. I am NOT seeing that. My opinion. RR tried to talk Mallett into staying by saying he could mold the spread around him. Can you imagine Mallett in this offense??? RR said he could work with TEs. Are YOU seeing us working with TEs. Go back and take a look at how often Threet is in trouble, not because of something he did, but because of the previous play calling. FX, did you read Brian's post about how we should be able to use counter plays against Illinois because of the way their DL broke off the snap?? Did you hear Brandstatter talking during the first quarter about how the offense was making nice gains using counter plays. How the coaching staff must have sniffed something out. Now go back and count how many counter runs we tried after the 1st quarter. And it wasn't because Zook adjusted. FX, did you notice who was tackling SM on our zone reads?? The back side DE who wasn't being accounted for. Who's job is it to see that and either knock the tackles heads off for missing that assignment or getting another back in the backfield to help block?? Look FX, I ain't dumb. I've been watching UM play since 1967. I expected this team to be 3-3 at the half way point. And we should be. But I did expect our coaching staff to be a bit more creative. I see a lot of rock versus paper.
Agree completely Lots of people ripped Lloyd a new one for calling plays that do not work. Time to call out RR and CM for exactly the same thing. No throws to the TE, Run Run or Run Pass behind the line too too many times yesterday. Now I know teams adjust or should, but Zook is NOT one of those guys. He is a very bad bad coach and we made him look like Lombardi and Landry combined yesterday. You beat a dual threat QB like Williams by playing zone, bend don't break, nothing behind you, contain the bastard QB blob of goo defense with the occasional blitz thrown in. Not what we saw yesterday. Shafer should know better. He watched U$C clobber Oregon a few years ago. I don't regret hiring RR, but where is that genius Shawn King described who could alter the spread to fit his QB. I am not seeing it.
Another defensive factor The other stat that is important on the defense is pass defense efficiency. Not pass defense. Teams that give up a lot of passing yards, still win a significant number of games. But give up big plays, high completion percentage, and lots of TDs and you are in trouble. These factors are better measured with PDE. We are currently 67th. Too many big pass plays.
Mike Lantry

I think Mike was a 27 or 28 year old Vietnam Vet when he played for UM.  He made that first one in 72.  I was 10 and behind that post.

May I suggest the refs from the 78 Rose Bowl.  The phantom TD awarded to USC.  White fumbled 2 yards from the goal line.  The players knew it, the fans knew it, even the announcers knew it.  First time I ever heard an announcer suggest instant replay in a sport. Even White says he fumbled.  USC gets to play a home game with 80% of the stands filled with USC fans.  No gifts needed.
