... And the context is…

... And the context is simply this - having seen organizations respond to issues involving ethics and decision-making in the command - the initial response is to stand on the hill and hold until relieved - defend in place ...

It always ends the same way - the organization and the command - the system - contracts and crushes the people associated and they are replaced ... the merits and rationale and well-intended decisions in whatever the situation was ... the organization cleans the command and starts over ... and that is what is coming as sure as day turns to night and the sun rises ... it is coming.

My perspective is a guy who became a fan (my team doesn't win all that often and we only really care about one game anyway.) Came to appreciate Michigan, the Athletic Department, and the entire school. Could only imagine what it would have been like to go to UM. I am happy with the course I was afforded and the opportunity to serve - but I get how special this place is and how special the tradition here is.

Came up for the Army - Michigan game and almost had an epic upset. Was here for five days ... Tailgating on the sun-drenched Golf Course in September among those enormous pine trees. The Big House. Going out to the bars and having a truly memorable time ... Had an Army buddy whose son was a Coach - and got to meet the Olympic Sports Coaches and see the facilities ... have met a number of UM football players over the years and they are some of the best, strongest, most ebullient, and toughest, smartest leaders I've met.

This is a great coaching staff and the culture and the team are one of the best anywhere - ever.

Finish strong. Win. Create memories for a lifetime right now - Remember your friends you went through it with ... And let history take its course ... can't stop what is coming ...  and it sucks. It Effing sucks.

I am afraid you are right …

I am afraid you are right @Charlesdesmond. When this is over, it is going to be bad.

Coach Harbaugh will be gone, and zero coaches on this staff will return. There will be show-cause penalties for Coach Harbaugh and the primary D/O Coordinators if they participated in this. Regardless, none of these Coaches are coming back.

There will be multi-year probation, bowl bans, scholarship losses, vacated wins, and players transferring to other schools after these 40 Seniors leave. And it will go beyond the Stalions idiocy. U S Integrity is involved for gambling irregularities.

Bitching about other schools and coaches is understandable, but they didn't do this. Bad decisions were made and they continued. Tale as old as time ...

With certainty, there is a transition scenario in place already. Coach Harbaugh will coach in the CFP or Bowl game if things turn south next Saturday.

Think of Titanic after the captain learned the scope of damage and told the ship's officers to man the lifeboats and send out the distress signals.

This era of Michigan Football is over. And it is going to be terribly sad.

Nah - I did not write…

Nah - I did not write clearly enough. I'm making observations and assessing the opponent's prior capabilities and results, weaknesses, and where UM spent an entire year dedicated to exploiting them. Where is the OSU fanboi frame of reference? Analyzing our favorite team is not the same as drinking the Kool-Aid - Not the same as making excuses for OSU. Stroud is weak. Compounded with no running threat because OSU was not tough on the OL nor on the DL, exacerbated by the weather where OSU could not just air it out on a fast track and make up for their weaknesses by outscoring their opponent. UM would not let them out of that phone booth, and inside that phone booth is where this fight happened.

The OSU good weather BIG XII offense and defense was a mask to a.) their overall lack of toughness, and b.) their lack of toughness made them a one-dimensional pass-first team. That is the same pass-first team the weak non-tough OSU defense practiced against all year, BTW.

So when it came time to play The Game, OSU had zero ideas about what UM was going to hit them with, how hard they were going to be hit, and the depth and pervasiveness of the impact in all phases of The Game. OSU was like the green replacement units thrown into the Ardennes in the Battle of The Bulge. The weather and the fight came straight at the favored, comfortable team, and there was a panicked retreat, just like during The Game in November. The OSU defense was weak in personnel and in capabilities and scheme, particularly weak in mental toughness. Their QB is a thrower, not a Leader. The weather merely uncovered his weakness as a Leader.

The weather was a catalyst to expose how Gattis could exploit their weaknesses. Gattis and UM took advantage of that. Better weather conditions or an indoor track showed that Gattis did not have an absolutely weatherproof game plan. The CFP and Georgia shone a bright light on his Tier II OC capabilities. OSU was listed as Tier I in 2021. They were Tier II. Tier II met Tier I, and The Team - the more brutal, more dedicated Team - won The Game.

OSU wanted no part of UM's physicality. Your QB sets the tone for the team. He has to be tough and a leader first - throwing capabilities come after leadership and toughness. UM had a rugged pair of QBs (finally) who could win this fight. OSU had tough QBs that were leaders on the field in the past. They wanted to fight. Had the will to find a way to win. Stroud is not tough - Not as a QB, nor as a football player, nor as a person, and he is not a leader. And he was afraid of the cold.

A lot of talk coming from Columbus about payback next year, etc. They have an entirely new Defensive staff and a new OL coach. Remains to see if they will be any tougher. Talk is talk.

Stroud will not be any tougher next year, no matter where they play. If it is a clean day weather-wise, OSU will have an advantage in the air. Gattis was no genius and did not scheme a way to beat OSU. UM was tougher, and UM dedicated themselves to beating OSU, and that toughness was what won this game in each hand-to-hand fight. OSU folded. The weather made it a rout. Gattis performed at an average level. Post-game, he ran his mouth because he had never been 'here' before. Upon exiting a program, his immaturity (again) clearly shows he is not ready for the next level. His success in The Game was more him being along for the ride than devising a strategy and fight plan and executing on it.

Gattis is neither innovative nor a Tier I OC. He is not a Tier I recruiter. Two strikes against him before Gattis even walks onto the practice field in Coral Gables. Who will he compete for, and what rivals is he set up to defeat as an OC at Miami? Will he out recruit Alabama? Georgia? From a Tier II team sitting in the Tier II seats in the ACC? His Tier II overall game will shine - Dimly - again.

You want to sustain the next 20 years of The Game like you lived to see in 2021, as opposed to the prior 20 years back to 2001? Take off your Maize-colored glasses. I am no OSU shill. UM won this in 2021. It is a start. Period. It is not a return to parity. What happens next is up to the Players and the ability of the new DC and OC and their staff to develop the Team as competitors who have a scheme they can win with.

But, whatever they do - They need to be prepared to fight in a phone booth and keep that door slammed shut for 60 minutes. Gattis would never grow into the OC role and emerge as the HC. He would never be the one who built the culture + scheme to bring that to the fight year-over-year, no matter what happened in 2021. Gattis appears to be more a defused Zach Smith than a Lincoln Riley. The next OC will be HC ready in scheme, development, and emotional and mental toughness.

Take the win in 2021. As Coach said - It is a start, a beginning. UM dodged a short round by having Gattis move on. If Coach is still here that long, the new OC and DC will also be candidates to replace Coach within three years.

I'm not a homer - not an OSU fanboi. But, I assessed who is on this Team, who the leadership is and how they performed. To chart a course to win The Game in 2022. - and more than any other thing, win The Game every year. And then start over and do it again the next day for the entirety of the next 364 days. That is it. Everything else is secondary.

Gattis got lucky with the…

Gattis got lucky with the weather and OSU having a historically pathetic and inept defense. Plus Stroud was afraid of the cold. OSU QBs don't normally fold like that. Gattis didn't bring it and will get exposed in Cryami. Although the ACC is weaker than the B1G West and the PAC 12. Not going to miss him.

Army planned for that game well over a year in addition to always prepping for Navy. They left it all in Ann Arbor that Saturday and their season went off the rails after that.

I am announcing THURSDAY that I will become the next Head Football Coach at the University of Michigan."

That is BS - OSU is a good school. This is a pointless exercise. OSU Football Players are quality people getting degrees no worse than U of M. The difference is the AD and the culture of HS Football in Ohio and that translates to OSU. Michigan does not care about football as much. Period. Not because they could tweak admissions and suddenly compete.

I think OSU has a better…

I think OSU has a better academic program than Bama. It is a pretty comparable football academic program. Urban instituted 'Real Life Wednesday's' and stressed life after football - after the NFL - and he won over players and parents with an approach that OSU would change their lives... Compete for Championships at the Natty and always B1G level... get a minimum to higher draft position... get 2-4 NFL years of change your life money at a minimum and by the time you are 30, you are at worst set for life and your adult career. Parents love it and it resonates with players.

Forgive being a bit of a Noob - What does the sub-blog "Neck Sharpies" mean?

You can guess by my handle…

You can guess by my handle who my team is. I have to say my brethren from the Army and all the graduates and parents and those related to our humble Alumni had just the greatest experience at the Army - Michigan game. Army appears to have had a season-defining loss and never seemed to recover from that 2 OT game.

Glorious day - What an experience to meet so many great folks from Michigan out on the Golf Course. I've been fortunate to have my employment place me in Michigan a lot over the past 3 years. Traverse City in July. Wayne County and Ann Arbor in the Fall. I have an invite to the UP. I love the Great Lakes. I am a Vet and an Engineer who wound up in healthcare sales somehow. I can say without qualification the best people I've come to know in the past 12-15 years in my industry are from Michigan. I live in Texas and I was not born there. I travel everywhere. I like Michigan. And I like it because of what the people stand for.

My take on the PSU game will be different than most here - and I understand the disappointment. I saw a team of character and fight tonight. I get the frustration of Michigan fans. I know this game. I've met a good number of former UM ball players over the years. Impressive Men. I went to a school for Soldiers. Michigan stands tall in every interaction I've had.

I see a program that turned the corner tonight. Michigan had this game. The score did not show it - This is not the same team that played in Madison. It would be commonplace to take this loss the wrong way.

Don't.

This team is finally there. W's and L's are the measurements - I get it. If I am looking for where the puck is going, Michigan is headed there.

This fight to where Michigan should be has not been a straight-line path and it has not been predictable. This program is not going backward.

This is a football program version of the Battle of the Coral Sea in WW II. This is a turning point. It is not a win. It is not a headline defining statement game. It hurts and probably feels like this is how it is going forward. Win some - Lose some. It will seem to easily be forgotten.

Not in that locker room, it won't. Ronnie Bell is crushed. His teammates will not allow him to be. They know this is a game of gnat hairs on a windy day in November. He will catch the next one in that situation. Or he will spring a block for a play that leads to a score. He is disappointed in having let his brothers down. And his brothers will not let him stay down. Because this locker room believes in one another. That is what I saw with this team. It was a bright neon line circling a camaraderie that will transform this program.

Michigan will pound Notre Dame next week. And then the rest of the season will be one positional group drill at a time. One practice session at a time. One practice at a time. One day of team practice at a time. One practice week at a time. One Saturday at a time. And then Ohio State comes to town for The Game.

This team will be ready. They can stand fast in hard places. Climbing and fighting is a grind. It is hard. Then, without any fanfare, you peek over the ledge, and there are no more spines to climb. You pull yourself and your climbers up like it's routine. And you work your way up to the craggy summit. You win your fight. And you gather yourself - because the fight goes on.

This team is in the fight. And when you are in the fight, you know how to win that fight. And then you become hard to kill. And then you start bringing the fight. And then they feel the fear. And then you bring it - and they know it. And then they know you know that they know it. And then you don't know how to lose.

It took forever for this program to get here. Tonight was the night they got here. This locker room is in the fight. This team wants to fight. This team is itching to fight.

Take time to enjoy the transformation. Appreciate the leadership. Bring it.

Hello, MGo, Y'all -

Stoked to be in The Big House tomorrow for a great game and great atmosphere. Excellent analysis. Army's offense takes 3-4 games into the season at times to get dialed-in. Was at the OU game in Norman last year and they had their shot to win it.

Just got into AA and have a tailgate on the Golf Course with some Army folks. Any suggestions for downtown Ann arbor? Wish we had more time. I have a 6:00 am flight back Sunday morning, so I might as well stay up for 36 hours to see it all.

What suggestions do any of you have to maximize the time here in AA? Thanks.
