University does a lot more than hire and fire AD's. Brian is a fantastic sports blogger but I don't want him anywhere near the university in such a capacity.

Seriously. If anything, boycotting Maryland over Penn State because Penn State is a really cool environment against a good team at night with all of this cool other stuff surrounding the game means Brandon wins. Penn State at night is perhaps the most "Brandon-ized" game on the schedule. Waiting for a worse game is ridiculous.

I said previously that I have a friend on the athletic training staff (a student) who insisted that there was no concussion, and that was the truth. He was still saying this as late as yesterday. If anything, the fact that they can't get their full training staff on the same page about an injury like this reflects even more poorly.

I was previously on the "it's not that big a deal, it was only one play" side of things, but if anything the absolute monstrosity that is our AD's handling of this situation has made me even more upset. Lying, miscommunication within the organization, patronizing fans... Brandon needs to be fired within the week.

Nor would I hire any of the dozens of counterexamples where a DII coach is pulled up to coach a DI school and fails.

One play where he handed the ball off. I'm with you. There are a lot of different possible narratives for this story and the only reason this one has taken hold is because we are losing a lot of games. The only reason it is a national story is that people are pissed enough about us losing games that it will sell nationally.
Morris should have come out of the game earlier, obviously. Coaches made a mistake, obviously. It's probably worth a couple of mgoblog threads and hand wringing. Nothing more. I mean, I remember when ND played Clausen (I think) after he had a cuncussion and could only see out of one eye at halftime - that didn't even make it this big, and that was worse on pretty much every level.

I'm sure he's a great coach for his current situation, but being HC of a DIII school and being HC of a premier DI school are very very different jobs. I just get the feeling that he will not have the track record to demand the respect of the players here, nor the experience around big ego's to keep them in check. I think it's pretty clear that our problems go far beyond X's and O's, and if we want to fix them I think we'll need a guy who's more than just an offensive innovator, we're going to need a big name, hardcore leader. If not Harbaugh, at least someone with similar experience on a DI level.

Agree with the other posters. Choosing Maryland to boycott is half-assed and quite frankly ridiculous. If you're really fed up, the boycott starts now.

My thought exactly. People don't seem to realize that Shane was only put in for one play, on which everybody knew he was only going to go in, hand the ball off, and come back to the sideline. There was no risk of reinjury.

I don't even know how to read this stat. This is really why I'm so confused that we're so bad on offense - it doesn't ever seem like we can't get off the ground, but every drive finds some way to fall apart before we put points up. Bizzare.

Wow. A ticket giveaway that is literally just a small icon of a torn piece of paper? I am dissapoint, Brandon.

Cosign. I hate to say it, but my passion for this team has faded over the past few years. I no longer get upset when we lose. The only thing that's left is a deep sadness that these players and coaches, who I so dearly want to succeed, are failing. They work so hard, and care so much, only to fall short. It sucks.

What matters is that he thinks he turned out fine. Therefore he feels justified in raising his kid the same way. Your or my character assessments don't really enter the equation.
Also, just because he "went to college" (as a star athlete I'd add) and lives "as a rich dude" doesn't mean he's ever had those beliefs challenged. In fact I'd say the opposite, that both of those things point to him living in a bubble.
|2 weeks 17 hours ago||Hot take||
I have what seems like an unpopular take on the issue, but I'm curious to see what people think about it. First off I'll just say that I'm personally 100% against physical discipline such as this, I was never hit as a child, and I have no interest in doing the same to my future children.
That having been said, we live in a country where the vast majority of people believe that some level of corporal punishment is ok. Peterson himself grew up in an environment where discipline with a switch was the norm, and he himself was disciplined this way. He has likely never had anybody in his life confront those beliefs. He grew up with it, turned out more than fine, and therefore sees it as an effective way of disciplining his child. It's easy for some of us to sit back and say it's a disgusting way to treat a child (and it is), but at what point is it fair to say that Peterson didn't know any better? I certainly have a lot more sympathy for his situation than I do Rice's.

There's a reason season predictions always take into account TO margin and compensate for regression to the mean accordingly. TO's are very close to random and they are extremely high variance. We've played 2 good games and 1 bad game, with two of those having weirdly bad TO margins. If we can approach average with regards to turnovers (and we are likely to), we'll start passing the eye test a whole lot better. We look good but not great in every other metric.

I would expect that shoulder pads fit much better now than they did back then, helping to reduce injuries. I'd also expect that it's a lot easier to run through tight spaces in these, which benefits just about every position.

Bingo. I think I really did hit my fandom "rock bottom" last year, but that's what it took for me to realize that A) getting that upset over a football game really isn't worth it, and B) it's something I can consciouslly fix. I still love the team, still love to win, still know way too much about the team and tactics, but don't get upset when we do poorly any more. I get the feeling there will be a lot more mgobloggers on our side after an awful game like that.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Weirdly enough I felt fine||
Weirdly enough I felt fine about this game. Last year every loss would completely set me off and I would be miserable for a couple of days (you may remember me from TWIS), but I've been able to get that under control now. I watched the game with friends, we played like shit, but it was still nice to watch Michigan football even in a bad loss. I was in a good mood throughout.
Maybe I've just achieved college football nirvana. Or maybe I'm just used to us sucking. Maybe those are one and the same?
