I think safe spaces get misunderstood by older folk a lot of the time, who think it's a way for people to spare themselves from being offended at stuff. ~90% of undergrads at Michigan would probably say it has more to do with people feeling safe to express themselves and being free from threat - a good thing for free speech in fact, and the movement has had a pretty close connection to the increasing support for survivors becoming an important issue on campuses.
That having been said, I agree wholeheartedly that campuses are places for free speech first and foremost, and for example speakers should never be forbidden from campus due to their views. There are people who take things too far and I say good on UChicago for taking a stand - just wish those who take this stand in the future are a little more sensitive to the important good that safe space initiatives can do on campus for a lot of marginalized groups.

How does them losing future classes impact this season, exactly? This was Mr. Yost's point - they're screwed long term, but for now they still have a lot of talent and a good system. Losing the coach is important, but I don't know that it's worth 4+ losses on a team like that, which is what would be needed to drop them outside of the top 25

The song's history began long before the civil war, and has continued since then. It meant a specific thing in that time period, and represented ideas that are best left in the past. But is that still what it represents to Mississippians today? (I honestly don't know, but my gut would say no.) If it was used to promote racism on campus or at games, good, nix it. And if its use was in a major way alienating black students on campus, then they're right to stop with it. But I don't think it's fair to tell people who feel a strong connection between that song and their home that, because it was co-opted by a racist rebellion or has historical racist connotations, it will forever be a irredeemably racist symbol. And I don't think it's fair to tell those people that they cannot celebrate their heritage with that song, if that's what it means to them.

Every year the night before the opener I have a dream that I'm waking up and it's already halftime, i.e. I've missed out on going to the game... That always jolts me awake, and I realize it's ~8am. Fun stuff.

I think it's so rare in both cases in part because its against norm to do so, but in larger part because pretty much everyone is doing it to various extents. Maybe that's ignorant to say about Olympic athletes, but definitely true about athletic departments.

I had the same thought about the Woodson pick as being a football Jumpman. Similar pose and everything.
Also, props to Jedd Fisch for his work with the wideouts. I remember being really scared after the last spring game when they looked awful, and now they're rated among the best in the country. Pretty cool, that.

I ran a similar series for /r/CFB on Reddit, except with fan submissions and voting - it was pretty fun (if unwieldy to look through since they were all different posts). Link below if anyone is interested in checking it out.

Conference games are determined by the B1G, they would be an even home/away split except for the fact that we now have 9 conference games, so it has to be either 5/4 or 4/5. Nonconference games are up to us and nobody else. We try to schedule as many at home as we can while still playing good teams - sometimes this leads to all home games, sometimes we'll be away but normally for only one OOC game. This year things just worked out that way.

I never voted for that rule. As far as I'm concerned, if someone wants to lend an athlete a car I really couldn't care less.

Denard drove a charger when he was here. I saw a UMich RB driving a new Camaro with dealer plates last year. Also: idgaf. I'm not getting upset about a rule being broken if it's something like this

Dude went to OSU to play football, was really good at it, and will now make millions of dollars doing it. I can't really fault the guy for not being "good at school."

You can never love Michigan sports "too much." But if your attachment to the team's success is causing you more sadness than happiness, then that might be "too much fandom." I hit that point a couple of years ago after a particularly bad loss (Rutgers I think?), and decided it was better to back off a bit. I'm better off now.
|20 weeks 2 days ago||I always say an easy class||
I always say an easy class isn't just a class with a small workload, it's a class with a small workload that you're interested in. You can take the "easiest" class at this university, but if you find it boring each homework assignment is going to be a pain in the ass. I try to balance easiness with some level of interest.
To that end, I always liked psych and soc classes. Below the 300 level none are really that tough. Creative writing (English 223) is similar if you're into that. Any of the project community classes (in the soc and psych depts) are great if you want to do some volunteering and get credit for it.

|27 weeks 1 day ago||Eh, I've seen a RB around||
Eh, I've seen a RB around campus in a new Camaro with dealer plates, and certainly pretty much every player seems to have his own scooter - doubt any of that is paid for. Can't imagine they pay for many meals, either, and I believe people when I hear about players taking other benefits too. If you somehow think Michigan is the only big time school that doesn't do this, you're deluding yourself. As another poster said, do you really think big time recruits would pick living as a poor student at Michigan over living it up at other schools just because they love our team and ideals so so much? Come on.
That having been said, I absolutely think that certain schools make a practice of paying players more than others. Some certainly seem to make salary a selling point to recruits (Ole Miss, Clemson, Auburn, etc) - I think with us it's more of a "we'll play ball and you won't miss out, but we're not getting into a bidding war either."

Seriously though, IANAL too but how is commiting a crime using a computer fundamentally worse than doing so without a computer? Couldn't you just be tried with the other crime alone? Laws are weird.

Good for Rashad, but it's silly to say that this means Harbaugh did the guy a solid by pulling his scholarship. Just because a victim of workplace harrassment makes out pretty well after suing doesn't mean his/her employer acted kindly or "helped out" the employee. It's a silly rationalization in my opinion.
Now, if (as some other posters have said) his scholarship was contingent from the get-go and he knew that by committing he wasn't guaranteeing himself a spot so much as raising his profile for future offers, that's another story. Is that what has happened with each of these offer pulls? That seems a little too convenient for me, and doesn't jibe with the facts of some of the other cases so well. Much as I'd love for that to be true.

An assistant taking a job as a head coach?! What an asshole, amirite guys?
In all seriousness, this is pretty cool. Seeing how the Meyer/Harbaugh coaching tree continues to bloom so close to us will be very interesting.
