We've been calling that for the past 5 years and it hasn't happened. The senior contributers you named were made by the great coaching staff, and are by no means irreplaceable. They'll graduate, new guys will step up, MSU will remain very very good.

If there's one guy who has the right to call the team out for being soft, it's McGary. Here's hoping he can lead them going forward.

I don't mind fucking around with the finish so long as we don't get any goofy logos or anything like that. Also don't mind alternate jerseys for bowl games generally - if there's a proper time to do it, it's that. Just hope it looks good.

Bummer to see all of the Lloyd Brady stuff finally on its way out... that was a very fun period in our mgocommunity's history.

Very interesting analysis. It is of course disappointing that we took so many games against bad opponents down to the wire, but outside of the MSU game (which was an awful matchup for us for all sorts of reasons), we really had a great shot in every one. I remember last offseason MSU fans were talking about how they lost every game by one possession or something like that, and that they expected that with another year of coaching and some better luck they could improve vastly - they have certainly been validated in that. With another year of coaching (and hopefully better coaching - knock on wood) we could be in a similar position next year.

Don't get me wrong as I love this blog to death and would love to see a return of some civility so I can go back to posting more often, but as far as "It's coming" <-- I feel like I've heard that before... every offseason for 2 or 3 years. I feel like there are a lot of changes that need to be made to the board and I'd love to see any of them, but you'll have to excuse me for not holding my breath.

Happy Hannukah! Here's hoping that while Borges only has enough football acumen to score on one possession, we can make the gameplan last long enough to score on eight.

I had no idea that was tonight, I would have planned ahead but alas I'm busy. Sounds like a great thing to do in 2 years though - especially as I will be a senior about to go to my last home game. Thanks for the heads up regardless.

|1 week 6 days ago||Seriously. If they said all||
Seriously. If they said all the right things (aka "they're a good team" "we have lots of respect for them" etc) and took us completely seriously, I would say we have no shot. If this sort of thing gets rampant though? The combination of them not taking us seriously and us playing mad is probably our only hope of an upset.

Do we have any more home games in the tournament? If so, how many/when?
|2 weeks 8 hours ago||If you want an actual answer,||
If you want an actual answer, here it is. Press the CBs, don't hesitate to blitz LBs, and keep 2 deep safeties as against northwestern. Keeping 2 deep safeties should help us not get burned by deep passes despite our CBs' press coverage, and it will allow the playside safety to come down hard on any outside run or option. Press coverage with 2 safeties should do enough to disrupt their bubble game and any deep stuff they want to do; from there it's just up to your DL and LBs to keep down their interior running game. Much easier said than done I know, but I feel like it's the best chance you've got.

You could have twice as many kids and still send them to college!! Sounds like a good plan to me!

This... this is the perfect example of what makes the UM-OSU rivalry so special.
Lots of respect between the two sides, but at the end of the day, there's still that special something that makes you think.... "God am I happy I'm not one of them."
|2 weeks 11 hours ago||I too have checked out||
I too have checked out emotionally for the large part. I can't say I was terribly disappointed with the ending of yesterday's game, instead it was just expected. I've always been the crazy Michigan fan in my friend group and all throughout the day yesterday people tried to console me, and when they did it actually surprised me - I had already completely moved on.
That having been said, I think this is just a healthier way of being a fan. I can still become emotionally invested when I choose to - I have tickets on Saturday and you can bet your ass I'm going to get excited for that game, for better or worse. But at the end of the day we're a bad team, and if me checking out means that fact no longer makes me depressed every weekend, it's not a bad thing.

Worst part is we're clearly regressing... I looked at those numbers and thought, "Against any team we might play in the future this year, I'll take those in a heartbeat."
|2 weeks 12 hours ago||This is more of a general||
This is more of a general betting logistics question, but it applies here:
Vegas lines aren't designed to simply predict the score, they're designed to make money. For almost every game these will match up perfectly, but will that be true here? I'm thinking this: OSU may be likely to win by 20, but given that it's a major rivalry game against one of the biggest fanbases in the country (and therefore a lot of diehard Michigan fans will think "anything can happen" and will put money on Michigan regardless of the line), wouldn't they want to shade the line on the conservative side? As in, if they think OSU will win by 20, but they also think that a lot of people will be betting on Michigan regardless of the line, they might open up at 17 or 18. The thought process being that they want OSU to have a better chance of covering because if they don't cover Vegas would be screwed, as way more people will bet on the underdog than would normally for a -20 game. Does this make any sense at all?

Interesting... gotta wonder why Fitz is suddenly in the doghouse. If he was legitimately hurt I think we would have heard something about it before gametime (and it wouldn't last this long), and if he was just jumped by the freshmen I'd assume he'd stay on as a 3rd down back or something... I suppose with this staff we'll never know.

It might be lame because it's a chain, but if I'm being perfectly honest, I've never had any pizza that tastes as good as NYPD. Bella Italia (local to Ann Arbor) is a close second, Pizza House probably a very distant third.

|2 weeks 6 days ago||I'm sorry my post offended||
I'm sorry my post offended you Erik, it wasn't to say that this post is worthless, just that that statement had a bit of a "captain obvious" feel to it. It was a joke. Don't take it too seriously.
And for the record, I've been on this site for years, and have contributed with many board posts, diaries, and comments. I may not post 24/7, but I'd definitely consider myself a worthwhile member of this board, and back when we had voting the votes backed me up on that. I don't really care what people say about my anonymous accounts on the internet so I don't feel any motivation to take a shot back at you, but if I'm being perfectly honest your response seems to far outweigh mine in terms of flaimbaiting. I'm sorry to offend you

No, that's still due to injury. All Hoke is saying is that while he might be 100% physically now, he missed too many reps due to his injury to be successful.

Agreed. SC is currently one of the highlights of this blog for a lot of people, disagreeing with him is one thing but this takes it too far. It may not really be the case but it certain came across to me like Brian took it a bit personally.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||I agree completely on the max||
I agree completely on the max protect thing. It's the same concept as running out of 2 or 3 TE sets - all you're really doing is bringing in more defenders, which equals more opportunities for a block to be messed up. Mathematically it's really best to spread the field.
That having been said, as a changeup I think max protect can work very well. If you spread the field consistently throughout the game to the point that the defense only sends 4 or 5 every play, changing things up by using 7 or 8 pass blockers can have its desired effect: keeping the QB clean long enough to hit a deep route. But when you are consistently loading the box with 2 or 3 TEs and running a lot of max protect, you're just inviting more defenders to blitz.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||You guys seriously want him||
You guys seriously want him to come out and say "yes, they're right, we only run certain things out of certain formations and they caught us perfectly"? ffs people, it's a press conference. Why on earth would he tell the press that we're running a predicatable offense? Or that he hated the play calling and thinks Borges is awful? There's no point in that; it's just bad PR.
If we go into next season with the same offensive staff, then and only then can we start calling Hoke stubborn. It's unfair to say that just based off of press conference answers which will always and forever only be motivated by PR concerns, not the truth.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||It could be much simpler: he||
It could be much simpler: he could just be predicting the same play, and blitzing a secondary player into where he thinks the run will be going. I doubt he's analyzing it at quite the mad-scientist level you seem to think he is.
That having been said, it's still a very good adjustment to make, and obviously it worked.
