I kind of don't want to enable these sorts of posts, but sure I'll bite: if the endzone starts at the front of the line, then it only makes sense for each yard marker to start at the beginning of that mark, otherwise the difference between the 10 yard marker and the endzone is not 10 yards and the field is not itself 100 yards.

You don't see guys in the NFL doing both because none of the 32 best FG kickers in the world are also among the 32 best punters in the world, and an NFL team has the luxury of having one of each. I don't think it's because it would be too much work.

My $.02 - and I'm not an expert - is that his issues are probably mental more so than mechanical. The "too big of a workload" interpretation is I think a little generous... I just can't imagine that punting more would make you forget how to kick field goals well, or vice versa.

The idea that soccer players/etc can just waltz in and be great field goal kickers is ridiculous to me. FG kickers practice that exact motion every practice for literally years - maybe a decade by the time they hit college. And people think that can be outweighed by a guy having put similar hours into kicking an entirely different ball in entirely different ways? I don't get it. Why should anyone be as good at kicking field goals as the guys who practice it and only it their entire lives?

We'll be better with Lewis back but I somewhat agree. There have been growing pains, and I think we'd be better off right now if we just played more man press like early last year. The thing to remember though is that we didn't get Brown in order to shut out bad teams, but rather to build a defense that can also stand up to IU/OSU at the end of the year... until then, I won't complain about some scattered touchdowns.

Seemed pretty normal for a The Story post. Well get a full week of football preview, don't worry.

If anyone bothered to read the article they'd see that this is a unique ranking in that the academies (usually not included in these) go 1-2-3 and William and Mary (usually not counted either to my memory) is 5. Other than those it's still a top 3 of UVA-Berkeley-UMich, the UCLA. So pretty much par for the course.

I think safe spaces get misunderstood by older folk a lot of the time, who think it's a way for people to spare themselves from being offended at stuff. ~90% of undergrads at Michigan would probably say it has more to do with people feeling safe to express themselves and being free from threat - a good thing for free speech in fact, and the movement has had a pretty close connection to the increasing support for survivors becoming an important issue on campuses.
That having been said, I agree wholeheartedly that campuses are places for free speech first and foremost, and for example speakers should never be forbidden from campus due to their views. There are people who take things too far and I say good on UChicago for taking a stand - just wish those who take this stand in the future are a little more sensitive to the important good that safe space initiatives can do on campus for a lot of marginalized groups.
|15 weeks 1 day ago||How does them loosing future||
How does them losing future classes impact this season, exactly? This was Mr. Yost's point - they're screwed long term, but for now they still have a lot of talent and a good system. Losing the coach is important, but I don't know that it's worth 4+ losses on a team like that, which is what would be needed to drop them outside of the top 25
|15 weeks 2 days ago||The song's history began long||
The song's history began long before the civil war, and has continued since then. It meant a specific thing in that time period, and represented ideas that are best left in the past. But is that still what it represents to Mississippians today? (I honestly don't know, but my gut would say no.) If it was used to promote racism on campus or at games, good, nix it. And if its use was in a major way alienating black students on campus, then they're right to stop with it. But I don't think it's fair to tell people who feel a strong connection between that song and their home that, because it was co-opted by a racist rebellion or has historical racist connotations, it will forever be a irredeemably racist symbol. And I don't think it's fair to tell those people that they cannot celebrate their heritage with that song, if that's what it means to them.

Every year the night before the opener I have a dream that I'm waking up and it's already halftime, i.e. I've missed out on going to the game... That always jolts me awake, and I realize it's ~8am. Fun stuff.

I think it's so rare in both cases in part because its against norm to do so, but in larger part because pretty much everyone is doing it to various extents. Maybe that's ignorant to say about Olympic athletes, but definitely true about athletic departments.

I had the same thought about the Woodson pick as being a football Jumpman. Similar pose and everything.
Also, props to Jedd Fisch for his work with the wideouts. I remember being really scared after the last spring game when they looked awful, and now they're rated among the best in the country. Pretty cool, that.

|18 weeks 2 days ago||Conference games are||
Conference games are determined by the B1G, they would be an even home/away split except for the fact that we now have 9 conference games, so it has to be either 5/4 or 4/5. Nonconference games are up to us and nobody else. We try to schedule as many at home as we can while still playing good teams - sometimes this leads to all home games, sometimes we'll be away but normally for only one OOC game. This year things just worked out that way.
