The guy wanted to be in the NFL back when he was at Stanford, and now he's having a lot of success there. If the only rift here is that he wants to be paid more (i.e. not that he isn't succeeding in the pros), I'm assuming he's there for good.

Awesome if true!!!!! A shame I will likely be in Europe at the time... first world problems.

You're probably right, I'll change that. Not sure why I thought it was the other way but I'm sure it made sense at the time.

1. You're probably in as is, but it would help to raise your ACT if possible, especially if you're looking for a scholarship.
2. Michigan likes to take out of stater's because they can charge a lot more for tuition - iirc, the percentage of out of state students is actually rising. I wouldn't worry too much about being out of state when applying, you look like you should be ok.
3. Unfortunately, for this I have no idea. I only know one person on an academic scholarship from out of state (the one that makes tuition as if it were instate), and he had a 4.0 plus a 2250 SAT or something like that. I would ask the admissions office - they don't like to answer "will I get in?" questions, but if you ask for more information on scholarships for out of state students (i.e. how many people get them, how much are they worth generally), they will be happy to answer.

Hmm. Interesting parallels, only difference is that this is a police investigation being started, not the university going back and looking at old cases (as some believe to have happened with us). Wonder why it took the police so long.

Why not just have an NFL Minor League which fields teams affiliated with Universities? A stipulation being that players can't stay in the minors for more than 4/5 yrs.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||At the turn of the 20th||
At the turn of the 20th century, it was commonplace for children in the US to work in factories, under heinous conditions with miniscule salaries, to make some money for their families. These children weren't coerced into doing so, but in fact made a choice to do so - a choice that was generally good for both their families and their employers. But just because both sides agree to something, doesn't mean it's fair.
Denard Robinson being paid the equivalent of $40,000/yr while making the university millions is not fair. Joe Kerridge being paid the same thing to smack his brain around his helmet for 4 years (while being nowhere close to a "king" on campus), without any sort of legal protection for his health, isn't fair. Just because the players buy into it doesn't mean the system is ok.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||I'm with you on the first||
I'm with you on the first part, but I think there's a compromise available that can please both a) the current anti-NCAA wave of litigation from people like Brian who see the "student-athlete" as a sham, and b) the athletic department, and all of the major corporations like ESPN that have billions of dollars staked into college sports.
I think the only way out of this is a technically independent (but affiliated) team of players, paid by their employer (Michigan's athletic department), but who don't receive scholarships or any official aid from the university. Players would be no different from any other students who have jobs on the side, and the responsibility would shift away from the University. It would mean that we would need a new athletic department which operates independently of the larger university, but I don't think that's a huge leap at this point seeing as how our AD is already fiscally self-sustaining. This would mean that players could be paid fairly, unionize, etc, and it would also keep the millions of people (and huge amount of $) invested in the system happy. It would also be ok with Title IX, which I don't think any other solution is at this point.

A combined 31 points in a combined 32 minutes so far, split almost completely evenly. Pretty good showing!
|6 weeks 3 days ago||I'm totally fine with all of||
I'm totally fine with all of this, and actually I think it's quite refreshing. Trash talk happens all game every game, and if you don't believe that you're just fooling yourself. Even many of our favorite Wolverines talk a lot of shit. It's a part of sports. Sports aren't a big deal. Trash talking isn't a big deal.
I love what he said about not judging a person based off of what they do while playing a sport, rather what they do for their family and community. Fact is, people are much more upset about this than they have been about any serious off-field incidents of any player in a long time. You want something to be mad about? How about that! The fact that people are getting so riled up at one guy's adrenaline-fueled trash talk after sending his team to the Super Bown is ridiculous in my opinion. Players have personalities and I'm glad that Sherman isn't afraid to show it.
As for Sherman's history with Crabtree, I'm sure it goes both ways. Both players are known to talk trash and I doubt either one is any more at fault than the other. But that's a part of sports, and it's really not that big of a deal.

|7 weeks 3 days ago||We don't know everything||
We don't know everything about the guy, and Saban's evaluation of him says says a lot, so if he had been forced out that would indeed be saying something.
That's like saying "I don't care that Rivals downgraded him from a 5 star to a 3 star, and that his scholarship offers were revoked everywhere else; he's the same player."

|8 weeks 3 hours ago||Previously I would have said||
Previously I would have said 7 or 8 wins, now I would think 9 is a good baseline. The line is still young, and we'll be going through at least some growing pains with a new offense. The bigger deal for me is my expectations and hope for the future, which has increased ten fold.

Much respect for the man and everything he's committed into our football program - make no mistake about it, every member of our staff has sunk their entire lives into this team over the past 3 years. Unfortunately, he just wasn't much of a coach. Very excited to see where we go from here!

Really wish Peppers was on that list. As is, I could see any of the WRs having an impact early on.
|10 weeks 6 days ago||I think he's a great coach||
I think he's a great coach and I'd love to see him here. If Hoke doesn't work out for whatever reason, or decides to retire before Harbaugh, I would love to have him as a coach - he's a great leader, teacher, and big Michigan guy.
Thinking that we should scrap Hoke in favor of another transition is ridiculous, no matter who the coach in question is.
|10 weeks 6 days ago||Would definitely be||
Would definitely be interesting. He's been around the college game a lot and I'm sure would have no trouble recruiting for Texas. Not to mention a decade as a HC in the NFL would surely go over well with current/future players. Could be a good move.
Edit: Hahahahahahaha I totally googled it too and had the same thought.

Would love to see Peppers in this group, but I think this is actually a great group to get on campus early. I could see Canteen, Harris, Speight and possibly even Mone playing roles early because of this extra time.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||I'm of the opinion that||
I'm of the opinion that coaches are going to do what they do once they've hit this level (i.e. once they've been coaching for 30-40 years). Boarges has proven what his coaching philosophy is at this point - complex offenses that try to confuse the defense. Is that a good fit for us? I would say pretty obviously not. Is he likely to change that? At this point, I'm not optimistic.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||The answer is pretty obvious||
The answer is pretty obvious to me: good coaching. There are lots of old OLs that don't do well, and there are lots of young OLs out there that do just fine - given our status as a program and what we pay our staff I would say we have every right to expect to be in the second group.

|12 weeks 9 hours ago||I think this works great with||
I think this works great with massive sites like reddit but for a place like mgoblog where most threads wont hold more than 50 comments I think it only really serves to stifle new discussion and add to groupthink. It's not very difficult to just scroll through a big thread looking for highly rated comments (it's what I do sometimes tbh), but something like this would actually hurt the site I think.
If it is possible, maybe a good compromise would be to enable this feature once a thread is x hours old? But I get the feeling that that's impractical.

I might just be projecting but I feel like the quality of the mgoboard has already started to climb once again. Posts like this and the funny comments that follow used to be hallmarks of mgoblog but I can't say I've seen them in a long time... it's good to be back.
