This drove me crazy about RR and McGee. We'd have a third and ten, not in range of of our kickers (ie. not inside the ten), we know we're going to go for it on fourth down, and they call long pass play. Incomplete pass, now we have a 4th and 10.
If you know you're going to go for it on fourth down, then you don't have to try to get all of it on third down.
I wouldn't place all of the blame on Gibson. Go back and re-read Brian's UFR's during Schafer's tenure. He made some pretty boneheaded scheme decisions.
BTW, I would have liked to see RR year 4 and a new defensive staff too but to be fair, he did have the opportunity to hire two DC's and failed both times. I could see DB being pessimistic about RR being able to hire the right DC and fix the defense.
Ordinarily I'd say, yeah, there's a good chance that DC hired as HC would re-hire McGee but at this point I doubt McGee has any interest in staying. The hostile local media, the huge portion of the fan base that never accepted him and RichRod, etc. I think it's just too much negativity for someone who is loyal to RichRod.
I'd always heard that he didn't want to uproot his family. Sort of eerily similar to JH, huh? I'd heard that his wife didn't want to move anywhere, thus the reports that it was between the 49ers and Stanford.
I'm disappointed DB didn't make up his mind on RR sooner so we could have had a chance at Muschamp. I think that was a great hire and Florida is going to continue to be a powerhouse for a long time.
But still be loyal. I'm mad at a lot of elements of Michigan right now but it is still my school and I would still say it's name with pride if I were in the NFL. I love Lloyd too, but I'd never say Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan.
This is one thing that I really like about Hoke: the possibility of him bringing Loeffler back. I think bringing Loeffler back would really help our QB recruiting and development and the offense as a whole.
We should temper our expectations based on how many players transfer and which players transfer. If we lose a lot of the upperclassmen that Rich Rod recruited, we're in for a painful season no matter who is hired.
I don't think you were being hard on him. You're right: there's nothing wrong with using this opportunity to bring attention to Stanford. I just think that the delay in his decision is due to sincere thought and exploration. I don't think it is a strategic effort to help Stanford (as you suspect) or himself (as many others on this board have suggested).
I don't really have much to base my opinion on except the fact that he hasn't said anything himself to create this attention. All the articles, tweets, and board posts have all come from media and fans and their speculation about him.
