|12 hours 49 min ago||Is it safe...||
to say it can't get worse?
I don't know. After the disappointing effort of the 2012 oline, the rallying cry heading into 2013 was the oline couldn't be any worse.
|14 hours 15 min ago||2 years of eligibility left||
While there will still be a number of youngsters playing, I think part of what might make the defense really good is the large number of upperclassmen that will be playing who won't have 2 years of eligibility left after this season - Ryan, Morgan, Bolden, Ross, Jenkins-Stone, Clark, Beyer, Wilson, Countess, Taylor, Ojemudia, Pipkins. There's going to be a nice mix of experienced upperclassmen mixed with talented underclassmen on the field for this defense.
|15 hours 57 min ago||Longer week afterward||
You might have more time between game 1 and game 2, but aren't there limits on how much practice time players can have each week? Not sure how that works with a 'mid' week game though. Of course, the players can spend more time on their own looking at film, etc.
|17 hours 8 min ago||Utah going undefeated||
Yeah, they went undefeated when they played in a mid major conference. Since they joined the Pac-12, they haven't had a winning conference record. They've won 9 conference games in 3 years.
|17 hours 34 min ago||Looking at the stats||
if they did use it, they didn't hand the ball off very much to the wr. It looks like their wr's had 4 rushing attempts. Of course, when you're top two running backs are averaging 6.0 and 7.5 YPC, you probably don't need to use too many constraints.
|18 hours 56 min ago||Kind of agree||
Maybe it's the pre-season optimism starting to creep in, but if the oline can just be decent, I think this team can be pretty solid. It's starting to seem like the pieces to the puzzle are starting to be there at most of the positions.
|19 hours 52 min ago||The catch for me||
is that the 2012 oline was pretty bad too. Everyone seems to focus on the oline's performance in 2013, but heading into 2013 the mantra was the oline couldn't be any worse then it was in 2012. I'm in my mid 40's and the last two years might be two of the worst oline's I've seen UM put on the field.
|20 hours 7 min ago||UNLV solid?||
Last year was the first time they had a winning record since 2000. Between 2000 and 2013 they had a losing record every year except 2003 when they went 6-6.
|20 hours 45 min ago||Robert Smith and Keith Byers||
from OSU had fairly long and solid NFL careers.
|1 day 13 hours ago||Omameh||
Kind of crazy to think how poor the 2012 oline was but yet they had 3 nfl players on it (Omameh, Lewan and Schofield).
|1 day 14 hours ago||OSU plays Kent St||
It's already slated for a noon start. (wrong week - should have done more research before posting).
|1 day 15 hours ago||It's mind boggline||
and after watching last year, I'm guessing the person being quoted wasn't using to much hyperbole.
|1 day 15 hours ago||Yeah||
Most of the schools that go on these decade long runs of greatness (OSU and USC in 2000's, Alabama recently) are dirty as can be. I'm fine with the Carr years cause Carr seemed like a Coach who tried to keep the program clean and do it the right way. If that is what Hoke is trying emulate, I'm good with it.
|1 day 16 hours ago||Extended mop up duty||
Agree, and I'm really hoping there are some games where Morris can get extended mop up duty cause UM is up big.
|1 day 19 hours ago||Depth Chart||
I'd think that with the exception of the "or's" the depth chart won't change much. They're going to be putting in game plans for App St this week (and maybe a few things for ND).
|1 day 19 hours ago||Yeah||
You move one of your most disruptive players on defense to a new postion and now he's got an 'or' next to his name with regards to whether he's going to start??????
|5 days 15 hours ago||Call me crazy||
but I think Harbaugh and Brandon would be a pretty big clash of egos too.
|5 days 15 hours ago||Agree||
As you and another poster have mentioned, Desmond didn't sugarcoat it when he talked about the 2008 team. Gives me some hope that he's seen/heard enough to think this team has some nice potential.
|5 days 20 hours ago||Compared||
to what they did the rest of the year, it was one of their better days. For the most part agree, but after the first game of the year no one knew CMU was going to allow almost 5 yds/carry. Since the 4.8 ypc probably is not in reference to what running backs did, if you add in the rushing stats for Gardner and Morris, UM averaged 5.1 YPC against CMU.
|5 days 20 hours ago||Not sure how much||
we'll be able to figure out with the oline after the App St game. The production from the running backs last year against CMU was actually pretty good, 38 carries for 155 yards. If the oline struggles with App St then there will be a lot of concerns. For the most part though, I'm eyeballing ND as the early litmus test for the oline.
|5 days 21 hours ago||Might have been in NC game||
Doubtful they would have made it in any of those years. In 2000 when they lost to UCLA, they also lost to Purdue and NW. In 2001 when they lost to UW, they also lost to MSU and OSU. In 2003 when they lost to Oregon, they also lost to Iowa. Auburn went undefeated in 2003 and didn't make the BCS title game.
|5 days 21 hours ago||Carr||
Pretty sure he was the head coach on the sidelines for the UW game that is posted in the OP.
|1 week 4 days ago||Morris||
looked like the second coming of Joe Montana and now there's legit competition to determine who will be the starting QB against App St.
|1 week 5 days ago||OSU||
most of those games have been scheduled for a while. ND stuck it to UM when they said they weren't going to renew. I'm guessing DB figured the ND game was going to be the marquee non-conference match up for a while. I actually think he's done a decent job of filling in the schedule. Most big time schools have most of their non-conference slate scheduled a few years down the road. Throw in the fact that most of the big time schools usually only like to play one other big school in their non-conference slate and it's tough.
|1 week 5 days ago||More realistic gauge of who the coaches trust||
I'm not sure the performance last year by a number of the people you mention endowed the coaches with a lot of trust in their ability to perform in games.
|1 week 5 days ago||Based upon||
how piss poor the oline performance was last year, "Maybe Cole is really that good..." might need to be taken with a grain of salt.
|1 week 5 days ago||For the most part agree||
I think coaches play whoever the best player is regardless of what year that player is.
The interesting thing is one could say Hoke possibly did look to the future with the way Kalis was handled in 2012. It sounds like the coaches were 50/50 on whether to insert Kalis into the starting line up towards the end of the 2012 season. I wonder now with hindsight if they regret not making that change and have taken a firmer stance on playing the best players regardless of how old they are.
|1 week 6 days ago||Who is the person||
that tagged these games as 'huge'?
If it's Brandon, that could mean anyone. He thought App St was a good team to schedule for a game. Granted if it's a home and home, the other team I would assume has a decent sized stadium.
|1 week 6 days ago||Even years||
I would think with OSU and MSU on the road in even years, DB would try to line up the better non-conference home and home's to be in Ann Arbor in the even years.
|2 weeks 13 hours ago||Not all year long||
They scored 3 points against Wisconsin and 14 against OSU.
