one thing I think most of us have learned, and I can't believe coaches haven't learned, is nothing is official until someone puts their John Hancock on a LOI.
|2 days 7 hours ago||What happens after college||
can have an affect on a program. Saban is known for pulling out spreadsheets showing how many Alabama players are in the NFL and what their salaries are. I'm guessing for most of the 5* and a lot of 4* star recruits, their number one goal is the NFL. How many players a program sends to the NFL and how well/how long those players stay in the NFL can have an affect when it comes to recruiting.
|2 days 18 hours ago||Smith/Kaepernick||
You do realize Harbaugh's hand was forced to play Kaepernick? Smith got hurt and couldn't play. Kaepernick came in and performed well enough that when Smith was healthy, he had lost the job. It wasn't like Harbaugh benched a healthy Smith to play Kaepernick.
|4 days 1 hour ago||Sean Miller????||
What are you basing that on?
He's been a head coach for 11 years - 5 at Xavier and 6 at Arizona. In those 11 years he has 4 Elite 8 appearances, 6 Sweet 16's and 6 regular season conference championships. I can buy the argument he isn't Tier 1 because he hasn't made a FF, but if you don't have him in the Tier 1 group of coaches, he's leading the pack of Tier 2.

While the SEC is definitely exhibit A in oversigning, If Delany is serious about looking into this practice, all he needs to do is point his compass towards Columbus.

While Rutgers was a pretty bad addition, Maryland isn't all that bad. Obviously, football is the main sport and Maryland isn't that great right now with the pigskin. However, Maryland is actually pretty good in a lot of the non-revenue sports. Their women's basketball team made the Final Four. Both the men's and women's lacrosse teams are usually quite good. Their women's field hockey is usually solid.

"I don't golf. I coach football."
|1 week 2 days ago||Not to mention||
Johnson is having his second knee surgery and Green and Smith will both be seniors when he's a freshmen.
|1 week 2 days ago||James Franklin||
I wonder if he's scratching his head right about now??
Last year when he did the same thing, there wasn't a whole lot of talk about it. Now that Harbaugh is doing it, a bunch of people are up in arms. Is it because they perceive Harbaugh as a threat but not Franklin??
|1 week 2 days ago||Actually||
Forget the year, pretty sure Alvarez was still coaching but watching a UM punt bounce off a Wisky player deep in Wisky territory late in the 4th quarter only to have UM recover to set up a game winning FG was pretty positive (and comedy).
|1 week 3 days ago||What time||
do you think Michigan is going to get back from their game at Utah?
BYU at least gains two hours when they're flying home. Michigan is going to lose 2 hours. The sun is probably going to be rising Friday morning when the players finally get to their beds.
|1 week 5 days ago||It ain't a beauty contest||
As Herm Edwards said - you play to win the game... and FSU won evrey game they played in the regular season. In this day and age when we cry about teams scheduling a bunch of cream puffs in the non-conference, FSU played Oklahoma St, Notre Dame, Florida and Citadel. Now, those teams didn't have the greatest of years but that's not FSU's fault. I'm guessing we could probably count on one hand the number of teams that play 8 conference games and schedule 3 of the 4 teams in the ooc from Power 5 conferences.

If you're on a medical scholarship, are you allowed to practice?
|1 week 5 days ago||Even if Spike redshirts||
there's no room for Brown or Williams. A redshirt still counts as a scholarship. Now if Spike has to sit the year and pays his own way (ie - goess off scholarship for one year), then there is room for one more player.
|1 week 6 days ago||Harbaugh||
has been hanging out with Beilein too much.
|1 week 6 days ago||FEI rankings||
Granted FEI rankings aren't the end all be all but those 4 teams BYU played finished the year ranked:
Virginia - 35
Houston - 59
Texas - 73
UConn - 106
Michigan was 2-2 after 4 games and the FEI rankings for those 4 teams were:
Utah - 16
ND - 38
Miami, OH - 107
App St - 111
|2 weeks 1 hour ago||BYU||
also lost their starting QB in the 5th game, Taysom Hill. BYU was 4-0 entering the game. He was emerging in the Heisman discussion before he got hurt. If he's healthy this year, BYU will give UM a very stern test.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||How would this force the NBA's hand?||
If the NBA maintains their current rules, high school players still wouldn't be eligible for the draft. If the NCAA made freshmen ineligible, the NCAA would have essentially made it a 2 and done rule. I'm guessing there are very few players that NBA teams would be interested in drafting if those players did not play as freshmen.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I think the bigger reason||
might be he found himself without any experienced big men this year. While the Kentucky game might have raised some eyebrows with Beilein, I don't know if you change your recruiting strategy based upon one game.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I doubt BYU||
would be in favor of an 8pm start on Saturday. They are very strict about Sunday being the Sabbath. They request that their teams do not play any games on Sunday's. I doubt they would want to take the chance that a Saturday night game runs into the early hours of Sunday morning.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Medical redshirt||
As WolvinLA2 mentioned a medical redshirt would still count as a scholarship so no scholarship would be freed.
A couple other things with the medical redshirt, and someone corrct me if I'm wrong:
1) The 'medical' part of the redshirt is not granted until the season is over. It has to be shown that the injury is what kept him out for the year (or whatever amount needs to be missed to qualify for a redshirt).
2) I was under the impression that a medical redshirt doesn't occur if a player hasn't redshirted yet. In Spike's case, he would just redshirt if the injury prevented him from playing. Now if you redshirt say your freshmen year and then later in your career have a injury that keeps you out, you could apply for a medical redshirt, which would be a 6th year of eligibility.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Pittsburgh Pirates???||
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Pirates as the worst organization. Historically they haven't been bad and have had a pretty good last couple of years but they just recently snapped a 20 year string where they had a losing record every year - the longest such streak in professional sports.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||The Marlins are interesting||
While in the grand scheme of the discussion they are a bad organization, they also have 2 World Series titles. There are way more organizations in professional sports with 0 titles then 2 titles since 1993 when the Marlins came into existence.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Redshirts||
wouldn't really solve the problem, would they?
If Brown and Williams commit and Levert comes back, while playing time would be a tricky subject the bigger issue would be amount of scholarships available. A redshirt would free up some playing time but do nothing to alleviate the scholarship crunch.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||'Improved' oline||
Yeah, the oline improved throughout the year but if you go back and look at the Ufer's from early last year, one of the constant themes in Brian's summary of the offense was there were holes available but the rb's weren't finding them.
I'm not sure if the oline took a huge step forward the last 3-4 games of the year, rather I tend to think they had been performing decently all year and when Johnson started getting carries they had a running back who was finding the holes.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Second round picks||
are not guaranteed a contract. Only first round picks are guaranteed a contract. If you look back at the history of second round picks, most do not make an NBA roster.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Bunting??||
No talk about Bunting. Baring a big off-season and fall camp is he off the radar until 2016?
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Kind of agree||
I think we all figured the defense was/is going to be solid in 2015 and that QB was going to a huge question mark. I think most of us are just hoping Harbaugh can get decent play out of the QB. I'm not expecting the QB to really have any monster games in 2015, but I'd rather not see the QB have awful games in 2015 (turnovers, missed reads, bad passes, etc.).
If the oline can continue to improve upon what appeared to be some decent progress at the end of the 2014, I'm bullish on the offense. Not that it will remind anyone of Yost's teams 100 years ago, but if there can be a decent running game and a QB who can move the chains I think we'll be okay on that side of the ball - not dominant but respectable.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Agree||
I'm not sold on either's pro potential - at least in terms of becoming a star. In college, they were playing with a loaded team. There were a number of guys who could score 20+ points on a given night. No one player was the focal point of the offense. If some of these Kentucky players were on a different team they might average 17-19 pts/game.
