Again, I have no idea if Harbaugh will end up being the coach, but I will side with Bacon on this one that if he doesn't come it won't be because some NFL team through more money at him. It will be because his competative nature is driving him to succeed in the NFL, which means more to him than Michigan.

Yeah, it would be bad. I think of would piss off a lot if people as well for stringing it along for so long, then turning UM down. Not saying that would be fair, but I think it would be the reality at this point.

I know UM really wants Harbaugh, but they can't just wait forever. If Harbaugh can't reach a decision in a week, then he's never going to reach one. So cut your losses and move on to have a coach ready to meet with team when classes resume and salvage a recruiting class. That's my opinion at least.

Bacon said yesterday that he believes the leak came from UM's side. I listened again and he seemed to imply that since it's a real offer, that so many people know about it now that things are getting out there. Wouldn't doubt that a game of rumor telephone may have made it a 6 year deal. Or maybe the incentives and stuff would be a total package of 8 per year, not just his base salary? I'm just speculating here. I know the 6 year part has never been confirmed, but the $49 million part has.
|10 hours 31 min ago||I don't know how I feel about||
I don't know how I feel about this. I mean, you can definitely make a correct economic argument for an 8 million/yr coach. But I can understand that 8 mil per year for a choach without a championship is a bit high as well. The one thing I liked about the 8 million per year report is that it took money completely out of the picture. Now it can become and issue if it's only like 6 million a year.

The 8 year part has not been confirmed by Webb. Could be longer terms.

What I don't understand about Marcus Ray's argument is that, it doesn't matter what the hell UM pays a coach; the expectations will still always be championships, and quickly. If UM hired a coach for $1, that wouldn't change a damn thing about how fans want the program to succeed. Paying someone 8 million doesn't change the pressure. All it does is help you get the person most likely to actually meet those expectations.
And I cannot disagree with Ray more about the impact of an elite coach. That is about the single most important thing you can 'buy' to improve your college football program. History has shown that elite coaches walk into supposedly 'bad' situations and achieve very quick results. Saban, Carroll, Meyer, Stoops, Saban again, Meyer again, Jimbo Fisher (kind of), Chizik all have seen immediate results when the right coach is found. Coaches are much more imporant in college than players to sustained success.

This was kind of my impression on how these worked in general. A lot of back channel negotiating, and when the school has reached an agreement in principle, then the contract is written up and signed. However, in this situation, Harbaugh is the only one holding any cards. Everyone wants him, and he has more power than any coach I have seen, really ever, in any coaching search. So the 'normal rules' might not apply here. However I do think it means that there has been enough interest that UM has spent a lot of time and energy getting specifics together and writing it down. I still think Harbaugh may not take it though.

Is he turns this down it will severely damage his rep in the UM community. I mean, he's got to do what he feels is best for himself and his family. But UM means so much to so many people that many would not be able to understand why he woudn't give back to the university that shaped you into who you are, while simultaneously being paid more than anyone else in his profession and given the chance to accomplish everything you want professional besides that one type of championship ring (the Super Bowl).

Basically Schefter gave an interview that said he doesn't believe the offer to Harbaugh is real, just agent smokescreen for leverage. He used as justification that UM is cheap, by stating that UM doesn't pay assistants and doesn't give athletes iPads as his examples to prove his theory. And as many have pointed out, UM has started paying its assistants, and UM was one of the first universities to supply iPads to its players. So, basically Schefter is talking out of his ass on this particular issue.

I was looking into Harbaugh's offense last night as well and ran across this article:
The interesting part is that in Harbaugh's first season with the Niners, Harbaugh comes in and installs a pistol offense with Alex Smith running the zone read. The article speculates that Harbaugh wanted that offense from the start and then went and got Kaepernick to run it to it's full extent. Personally, I find this encouraging, as it seems to suggest that Harbaugh is embracing modern offensive concepts, even in a league that is behind that curve for the most part.
|1 day 11 hours ago||It's difficult for me to||
It's difficult for me to reconcile at first, but it makes sense the more you think about it. First, the athletic department is completely independent of the University. So no general fund, tuition, taxes, etc are going to pay for this. It's all tickets, merchandise, donations, etc. Second, you have to think of it as an investment. If the investment pays off, the athletic department makes that back and more easy, which will hopefully benefit other student athletes.
However, if you're more concerned with general ethics, i.e. think of all the homeless people we can help with 8 million bucks, well then college football or basketball in general just isn't for you. Hell, no sport is for you then except the rec leagues in your local town. I struggle personally to reconcile my knowledge that sports really serves me personally no purpose, and little to society as a whole except for providing jobs I guess. But I still love UM sports, and I'm happier to see them win, so I guess throw the money down, and hope it pays off in the end.
|1 day 11 hours ago||Didn't look at the numbers||
Didn't look at the numbers exactly, but I was reading articles about coaching salaries last night, and one written at the time Meyer was hired stated his contract made him the highest paid coach in college at that time.
Also, even at this time, there is only one guy making more than 6 million, and that is Saban. And that was like a 5 million raise that happened last year or early this year to the 7 mil mark he's making now. The next few coaches below him are currently in the 4.5-5 million range.

And only four years ago, Urban Meyer became college football's highest paid coach when the took a 6 year 24 million contract. Wow.
