More Perspective = Scot Loeffler

Auburn hired our one-time QB coach to run their offense this year. They are now in the midst of one of their worst offensive output years in program history. Recall, Lloyd Carr chose Scot Loeffler instead of Jim Harbaugh to coach our QB's back in the day. Loeffler had been riding the success of Tom Brady from his days as a GA all the way up until this year -- where he is now in charge of running the whole offensive show. In other words, no place to hide.

There are Michigan fans who would love to see Loeffler replace Borges as our OC. Enough said.

My point? The Lloyd Carr coaching tree should have never gotten started or extended this bloody long. And here we are in 2012 still dealing with it.

The best you can do...

The best thing you can do for your sanity is stop watching UM football during the Brady Hoke Era. All it will do is leave you angry and disappointed. The same as the Lloyd Carr era, post-1997, when Charles Woodson made LC look so good for one season.

Look, as long as clueless, smarmy, money-centric douchebags like Dave Brandon are running our AD (thank you MSC for DB and BM), and clueless fans like the ones that make a disproportionate amount of posts in the commenting section of this blog (e.g. Nantucket Blue's eloquent voice of reason today) are there to defend him, we're screwed. These idiots are vocal and influential -- and cheer when we pass on a guy like Brian Kelly, and scoff at OSU when they hire Urban Meyer. It's hopeless.

As someone who has watched this crap for more years than I'd like to admit, the best thing I can tell you to do is just stop supporting it. Your relationships with friends and family will be stronger, your hair will last longer and your weekends won't feel like they were pissed away.

Brady Hoke is an average to poor coach, just like his mentor Lloyd Carr. While he's at the helm, the playcalling will always be predictable, the game management will always be mind-numbing, and the action on the field will be boring as hell. This is Michigan football for the next 10 years.

We regressed to 8-4 this year with only one quality win (i.e. Northwestern), which we needed a Hail Mary to pull out. Yet, we have lots of senior leadership and one of the most dynamic players in college football. How is it that we do not have 1 RB who can get us 1 yard? "This is Michigan fergodsakes."

Rationale I'll never understand:

1. "Borges wasn't fumbling the ball today. It's not his fault."

2. "Man, I'm sure glad we passed on that Brian Kelly guy and his 11-0 record because his face gets purple on the sideline or he wears cowboy boots when he's at a bowl game in Texas. Or man, glad Urban Meyer isn't our coach because he's an asshole, no matter what his 2 NC's and 12-0 record might say about his coaching skills."

3. "Hoke is a MAN for going sleeveless in 30 degree weather. So what if he still loses 4 games - 2 to our biggest rivals -- at least he's consistently superstitious. How admirable!"

4. "I trust our coaches. They know a lot more than I do. They must have seen something I didn't see when they kept running up the middle on 3rd down in the second half against OSU. Or putting Denard into passing situations against ND. Question nothing."

5. "I support Hoke's no-visit recruiting policy. So what if we continue to drop blue-chippers just because they want to look around a bit and satisfy their curious 17-year old minds. It's not like they shouldn't know exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives by their Junior year in high school."

6. "Borges will look better when he gets his players in. We must ignore his results at other institutions because this is Michigan fergodsakes, and everything will be different here."

7. "I don't care if our offense is boring, I just want to win. Wait, what did you say? Urban Meyer's offense is both fun to watch AND they win? NO WAY."

I'm not going to say anything negative about Mattison because the score should have been much worse than it was. However, I was not impressed with how easily OSU was picking up first downs throughout the game. Their offense seemed to move effortlessly down the field and then our D just made a few huge plays at key points. OSU won the field position game in the 2nd half largely due to being able to move the ball at will against our defense, even if they left it down on our side of the field without putting points on the board.

Bottom line is this. Brady Hoke was 47-50 when he arrived at Ann Arbor for a reason. That lack of success, when compared to guys like Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly, starts to make sense when you see timeouts being pissed away at non-critical times, predictable playcalling on 3rd down, the inability to appropriately evaluate talent (e.g. using Bellomy vs. Gardner against NEB) and the program's inability to wrap up blue chip recruits at key positions of need (i.e. RB and WR). Whether fans want to admit it or not, Michigan is destined to be mediocre during the Hoke era, and because Hoke is DB's puppet, and MSC could care less about athletics, we're stuck with it for a minimum of 10 years.

Best thing you can do is check out. Go for walks with you partner on Saturdays, or play with your kids in the yard. Rake leaves even. If you absolutely need a UM sports fix, watch the men's basketball team.

Or...

Or... how about option D? That is, the option that doesn't fit with your labeling system again. Why do I read? I read Mgoblog because Brian is an outstanding writer and extremely insightful. And funny to boot. I continue to read the commenting section because I'm fascinated by the continual repression of dissenting viewpoints by jerks like you.

I'm also fascinated by how someone has enough time on their hands to amass 35,000 mgoblog points. I do rather enjoy when someone expresses a viewpoint that is contradictory to the incessent dick slurping that goes on here and promptly gets banned by all the Internet tough guys who, for some reason, seem to take it personally -- like it's an invasion of their sacred space. Yes, I'll admit it. What goes on within the comment section sometimes fascinates me and often annoys me.

I'll be honest too. I don't enjoy your posts. I don't agree with your POV. I probably wouldn't like you in real life either. Doesn't mean I can't experience some kind of addictive fascination with how stupid someone like you can come across. I mean, how does one have the hours in the day to accumulate 35K mgoblog points? When do they work, study or do anything else but click "refresh"? (you still haven't answered that question btw) What satisfaction do they get from running off other posters who they don't agree with? What goes on inside their heads?

Yes, I'll admit, it is the regular whacking down of dissenting opinion that fascinates and frustrates me, and has made me part of the "read-only" crowd up to this point. And the reason I replied to your attack of my original post is because I believe there are something like 5-10% of the readers of this blog who don't post, or never have posted... probably would like to, but don't because they know they'll be banned in a matter of minutes (so what's the point?)... and rather enjoy when someone expresses an alternative opinion they can relate to. It feels good to know you're not alone.

To any of those people who might be reading, I just want to say, "Yeah, you're right. M-Wolverine is annoying. And yes, mods like "bdsie" got a thrill out of exercising their blog-given powers and banning people. And there are people who think Borges has screwed up big time at key points in the season. And Hoke, while likeable, isn't very bright and his ceiling isn't likely to be as high as the Urban Meyer's and Brian Kelly's of the world (based on past performance). And Mattison has really big man boobs but damn I love what he's doing with our defense!"

So I guess I posted because I believe there's a few readers who will think my posts are not stupid, or that I'm not an asshole or not a gluton for punishment. And I won't know it by the results generated by any points or voting system, because that system has been taken over by the same crowd who once labeled crazies like me as part of the "GVSU mafia."

Anyway, I sure hope we beat Ohio State next week. Oh wait, I'm supposed to call them "Ohio" aren't I? Oh wait, I'm actually going to call them "Ohio State" because I think it's stupid to call them "Ohio." Heaven forbid we ever play Ohio Unversity in some meaningful intercollegiate game, whether it's football or basketball, and then actually lose to them? How stupid would we look right?

Guess what?

Hey, guess what? You're wrong on all accounts! I'm just a lurker who got annoyed enough by the group think mentality of this board, and the rejection of any and all dissenting opinions by "points leaders" like you, and created an account to express my opinion.

But nice try in labeling me. I'm not butthurt either. And I really wasn't being a dick in my original post, unless the "Brandon owns you" statement spoke to you personally. It must have eh?

Negs

Negs from regular Mgoblog posters like you are a badge of honor. The only greater honor is to get banhammered without attacking an individual poster, rather receiving a one-way trip to bolvia for "being a troll" and offering criticism of the current regime. Group think runs rampant around these parts. With +34,000 points, congrats, you win the mgoblog commenting community! What do you do outside of commenting on this blog, by the way?

Credit where credit is due

I would have preferred a Greg Mattison appreciation thread. Way to go defense.

If UM beats OSU next week, then I'll give Borges props. If not, I'll continue to think Borges is an average to poor OC. Not at least trying to run Denard more vs Bama, continuing to call pass plays for Denard vs. ND even after he had thrown multiple INT's (and was clearly rattled), and not having Gardner ready for NEB after Denard went down have defined this season moreso than all of our wins against mediocre opponents. Come to think of it, other than our luck-out win vs. NW last week, do we have one single solid win vs. a quality opponent this year? (e.g. "quality" = win vs. NEB in 2011).

Next week's game vs. OSU is huge. Can Hoke beat Urban Meyer's 11-0 Buckeye's in Meyer's 1st year? If not, I'm sad to think UM fans will still be content with this year's team, despite the regression in record. That's the UM fan mentality after all. 9-3, 8-4, it's all good. Sure is better than the 3-9 we had to endure several years ago when the program was attempting to break out of its regional power status. That's what UM assured itself with Hoke at the helm, and that's what puts 113K UM fans in the seats on Saturday. Always being on the cusp of eliteness but never reaching it is a great way to make every game a must-see.

Brandon owns you. Neg away.
