Ah, crap. IIRC, he had some sort of alcohol-related incident during his time with the Jaguars, too.

Say it ain't so, Shoelace.

I'm hoping for a 2021-NBA…

I'm hoping for a 2021-NBA-Preseason-Franz-Wagner vs. everything-Franz-Wagner-has-done-since-then-type situation.

Methinks the lady doth…

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

I dunno. The Nolan…

I dunno. The Nolan Richardson days weren't all that long ago. The fact that they're taking a gamble on Calipari is probably an indication that they think they can recapture that glory.

Given a choice between a…

Given a choice between a young up-and-comer with promising early results and an older guy with a track record who is nearing the twilight of his career, Warde seems to prefer the former.

That game was glorious. We…

That game was glorious. We scored the first 13 points of the game and never took our foot off the gas.

I never hear that university…

I never hear that university mentioned in any context other than basketball (and their occasional flash-in-the-pan football success). I know a handful of people from Connecticut, and none of them have any affiliation with UConn. Never seen them mentioned in connection with any research or studies or accolades. Never seen any professor from there quoted in the media. They apparently have a law school, but I've never met anyone who went there. Do they even have any actual academics?

A lot of us rooted for Staee…

A lot of us rooted for Staee that year just because of the symbolism of it all. That game took place in Detroit at the lowest point of the Great Recession, which had hit Michigan harder than any other state in the country.

That, plus that just seemed…

That, plus that just seemed out of sync defensively. UConn had no trouble flustering Painter's man defense.

2013 still stings a lot more…

2013 still stings a lot more than 2018. And the fact that Louisville had to vacate that title makes it sting even more.

That 2018 Villanova team was loaded. We could have played them 50 times and we would have lost 47 of them.

Purdue Basketball is not…

Purdue Basketball is not nearly as obnoxious as Purdue Football (despite being much better).

This feels like the Tubby…

This feels like the Tubby Smith situation all over again.

Yes, but only so we can stop…

Yes, but only so we can stop hearing about how Michigan State's 2000 championship was the last time a B1G team won the tourney.

He seems to be handling it…

He seems to be handling it well. In hindsight, it would have been better if he had gotten his first head coaching job elsewhere. But it was an experiment worth trying.

I hope it has been made clear to him that he's welcome back anytime.

Presumably, if a kid is…

Presumably, if a kid is playing ball at Yale, he has other professional aspirations that have nothing to do basketball. Michigan is not in this position often, but if I'm this kid or his parents, I might question the wisdom in passing up the opportunity to get a degree from Yale and take a step down in academic prestige just to play basketball at a higher level.

I dunno. Good looking dude,…

I dunno. Good looking dude, nice hair, dresses like he's in the Mafia, etc. Just sayin'.

Jay Wright is one of those…

Jay Wright is one of those people who just has the look of a slimy dude, but who is actually a decent guy.

Probably the most underrated…

Probably the most underrated coach in the country.

I hate pretty much all of…

I hate pretty much all of the other B1G teams (with the possible exceptions of Northwestern and Nebraska) and I never root for them unless Michigan stands to benefit in some way. This ain't the SEC.

Honestly, I'm really…

Honestly, I'm really impressed with the overwhelming majority of hires Sherrone has made so far. Obviously time will tell on whether they pan out or not, but almost every single one seems like a home run. The lone blemish is Scruggs, whose DUI issues were known before he was hired. But I'm glad that was swiftly dealt with and that he's no longer part of the program.

In fairness, Warde is a 6'5"…

In fairness, Warde is a 6'5" former defensive tackle. His body type doesn't leave him with very many options.

In my mind, the post mortem…

In my mind, the post mortem is that he just wasn't ready to lead a program. Early on, his shortcomings were masked by his having inherited a program in pristine condition and hitting home runs on some early recruits (Hunter Dickinson, Franz Wagner) and transfers (Chaundee Brown, Mike Smith) who maintained the winning culture that Beilein had established. But as the Beilein core turned over, he struggled to build a winning culture of his own.

It's really unfortunate the…

It's really unfortunate the way it ended. In hindsight, it would have been better if he had gotten his first HC gig somewhere else.

Juwan's accolades on the court are well-known and widely acknowledged. What I choose to remember about him is that his beloved grandmother who raised him died the day he signed his LOI, and he kept a promise he made to her by getting his degree with his graduating class despite leaving early to play in the NBA. That's integrity.

Too soon.

Too soon.

Welp... So much for that.

Welp... So much for that.

Is Ohtani known to be into…

Is Ohtani known to be into gambling? Serious question, because I don't follow baseball closely so I don't know. Usually, celebrities don't rack up that kind of gambling debt out of nowhere. The big shots who get in that deep are already known to be high rollers, no?

I would feel a lot better…

I would feel a lot better about Medved than May.

I knew Kalel was special…

I knew Kalel was special when he completed that clutch 3rd and 1 jump pass in The Game 2022 and then walked off the field with a look of annoyance on his face, as if he was mad at himself that it didn't go for a TD.

The Facebook post announcing…

The Facebook post announcing his hire also included some nice subtle trolling:

Isn't Alabama one of those…

Isn't Alabama one of those weird schools with two mascots? I think their on-field mascot is an elephant for some reason.

I went about a year ago. Had a delicious dinner for six at this halal Wagyu place in Tokyo for around US$100: https://maps.app.goo.gl/r2867fgB9gV6389AA.

Also, this place in Tokyo where you catch your own fish and then they cook it for you is pretty cool:  https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g14133673-d1177395-Reviews-Zauo_Shinjuku-Nishishinjuku_Shinjuku_Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html

You know, that's actually…

You know, that's actually not such a bad idea. He was a pretty damn good D-line coach. He might not add much value in recruiting, but if all he had to do was coach DL, he could thrive.

It would require a lot of pride-swallowing by Hoke, though.

What's scary about people…

What's scary about people who get arrested for DUI is that they probably do it a lot more often than they get caught.

The idea that Brady has some…

The idea that Brady has some sort of strained relationship with Michigan is one of those baseless falsehoods that simply won't die.

Maybe if more people on the…

Maybe if more people on the West Coast had watched the Pac religiously, there would still be a Pac. I had a born-and-bred Californian who is a huge Niners fan once ask me, "So what exactly is the Pac-12?"

That statement has been so…

That statement has been so blown out of proportion over the years that the original context has been completely lost.

There isn't an AD in America who would have let Frieder get away with what he was trying to do. The audacity of telling your boss that you're leaving to join a competitor but will stay on and be the elephant in the room for an indeterminate period of time was ridiculous. Bo did what any AD would have done.

Wow, thanks for posting that…

Wow, thanks for posting that info.

Looks like Sherrone didn't overlap with Alford at Louisville, but he must been aware of the impression Alford made on the staff there.

Cousins isn't terrible, but…

Cousins isn't terrible, but for him of all people to be the first QB in NFL history to sign a fully guaranteed contract, he must have one hell of an agent.

That's a lot of McMansion…

That's a lot of McMansion bathrooms.

I fought it for a while,…

I fought it for a while, until I realized how much easier it is to say and type "natty" than "national championship."

I really love watching Jim…

I really love watching Jim and John chop it up (especially when their dad is with them). You can tell how genuinely close that family is and how much the brothers love and respect their dad.

Also: I don't think it's too soon. The man gave us the best three-year run in the program's history and topped it off with a perfect season and a natty. He's one of the greatest Wolverines of all time. I hope he achieves his dream of winning the Super Bowl. We should be the ones who cheer for him the loudest.

Politically, Jim doesn't fit…

Politically, Jim doesn't fit neatly into any category. He has some views that align with those of the left (Colin Kaepernick and certain racial issues) and some views that align with those of the right (abortion). He's done things that rankled people on the left (speaking at pro-life rallies) and he's done things that rankled people on the right (participating in a Black Lives Matter protest). He's a bit of an enigma.

The counterpoint to that is…

The counterpoint to that is that certain Western scholars on Islam have a tendency to view Islamic history through the lens of Western Civilization and its experience with certain hot-button issues and touchstone phenomena (i.e., slavery, colonialism, racism, etc). In so doing, they unwittingly carry baggage into their analyses that doesn't have any direct analog in Islamic history. For example, slavery as it was practiced in the Muslim World was very different from chattel slavery as it was practiced in the West. Similarly, although it's true that Muslim empires invaded countries just like their Western counterparts, applying the label "colonialism" (and all of its connotations) to the manner in which those countries were ruled is very misleading.

Some Western scholars who do this don't know any better. Others do know better but use these loaded terms as a rhetorical sleight of hand to evoke certain images in order to advance an agenda.

Interesting how you omitted…

Interesting how you omitted the rest of the title ("Defenders of the West: The Christian Heroes Who Stood Against Islam").

That guy is an extremist masquerading as a serious scholar. Him writing about Islam and Muslims is like David Duke writing about African American history.

He's 71, so that seems…

He's 71, so that seems unlikely.

The Beilein era was one of the greatest eras in the history of Michigan Basketball, if not the greatest. But it's in the past. Obsession with the past is what landed us in this mess (Juwan would never have been hired if he wasn't ex-Fab Five).

He left Michigan because he…

He left Michigan because he hated having to deal with recruiting bullshit. With NIL and the transfer portal, all of the bullshit he hated has only gotten worse.

How on earth did this guy…

How on earth did this guy win the Broyles award?

I hate to say it, but the fact that Gattis won the Broyles award and Sherrone Moore didn't kind of takes the shine off the Broyles award a little bit.

I don't know why you're…

I don't know why you're being downvoted, but this is correct. If you're a product of that world, you don't always think like a normal person. That's part of the reason why so many people find it so difficult to break out of that cycle.

There's alcohol, there are…

There's alcohol, there are drugs, there are people from rough backgrounds who are just pissed off at the world, there are people who grew up in circumstances where they have to fight to stay alive and that's their overriding instinct, etc. And some people are just plain sociopaths (who are not as rare as we might think).

It's a crazy world, man. It's hard to imagine how someone could do such horrible things when the overwhelming majority of people you or I interact with on a daily basis are sensible folks, but there's a reason why we have police, courts of law, and militaries in society. Bad shit happens, unfortunately.
