As the third wheel on the Varsity Blue acquisition of Paul Nelson and Tim Sullivan, thank you Brian. My journey to today's game wouldn't have been the same without you. May you have a safe flight home.

In that vein, this was a classic example of a game that was incredible for the final stretch + OT but was mostly boring as hell before that.

I miss this sometimes.

This game was my freshman year on campus. I totally underestimated Michigan weather and regret to this day wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Oh man, Rosen was a hell of a guy during my time on campus. Probably my favorite interview I did for mgoblog even if me talking is cringe as hell.

Sad to hear the murky firing.

I had already lined up my first post to the board in probably 7 years to be a block quote from 2011 Trash Tornado game column. Going for it on 4th down and converting only to kick on 4th down later. Total lizard brain.

 https://mgoblog.com/content/lizard-brain-tornado-apocalypse-derp-derp-derp

The now rapidly developing lizard brain theory of college football coaching states that there is a certain level of pressure above which rationality goes out the window and coaches revert to who they really are. It came to me in a horrible epiphany when Lloyd Carr punted in the 2005 Ohio State game less than a quarter after going for it on his side of the field. Coaches panic, go to their binkies, and then try to convince you otherwise in the post-game.

Different coaches have different levels. Ron Zook reverts to the lizard brain on the opening kickoff of every game. Kirk Ferentz makes it about five minutes in. We don't know about Tressel because he constructed his team such that the lizard brain was right. Les Miles exists on an entirely different axis with taffy on one end and victory on the other. He is the only one who escapes. The lizard brain is unavoidable.

Al Borges's lizard brain kicked in after Vincent Smith ran for two yards on Michigan's first offensive play of the second half.

This makes me so happy.

Hi…

This makes me so happy.

Hi all. Bye all.

Whelp, may have to dust off…

Whelp, may have to dust off the ol laptop from 2008. I think there's an email from Brian on there somewhere offering me a flight to Omaha if we made the CWS.

Maybe while I'm on there I can hit that old publish button again.

Baseball

Being listed as last 4 in was laughable. Every pundit at D1baseball was perplexed at that. Made no sense. They were a solid 3 seed and a near lock for the tourney.

Improvements

Reduce the pitches per at bat to strike out or walk. 3 balls is a walk, 2 strikes is an out.

Remove the DH. It's the Mudville, not the Mudville 9 and a guy who isn't good enough to play defense. More outs will quicken the game.

Get radar based strike and ball calls rather than a human. It'll be faster and more likely more accurate.

Increase the bases to 100 feet. More outs will happen to speed up the game. Increases the value of line drives and home runs compared to ground balls.

Require a base runner on third base to attempt to steal at least once per at bat.

Allow the hidden ball trick.

Triple play on defense buys you an extra out in the next half inning while batting.

If a pinch hitting mascot hits a home run, the game is over and that team wins.

This is good.

Viva Bolivia

Will be there tonight

Leaving work right now to prep. Tickets were stupid expensive even before the US made it. My nose bleeds were 155ish a piece.

Should be fun. If we pull off the unlikely win*, I may diary it. Either way, this tournament has been a success and turned around my opinion on Klinnsman.

*I BELIVE THAT WE WILL WIN**
**Not really

I want to know what spurred this

Because it is hilarious

That'll take you

I really hope

I really hope we get this started as a thing where everyone goes:

"But BRRIIIIIIIINE"

Because we need the B1G to PAWWWL

Sept. 15th can't come soon enough

Wild Turkey's fall season will open up and that turkey will be no more.  I think at least, Wastenaw County might be part of zone YY, and I'm not entire clear what that means.  It sounds like hunting on private grounds only.

You are terrible. As tailgate

You are terrible. As tailgate food.

I get all my information

All my information comes from the Detroit Free Press and Bleacher Report. Why would I pay for any of that trash?

Someone isn't going to get this. I just know it.
Not to say Ace is bad at math...

But that's a lot closer to $2xTexas

As of right now, two of those are running away with it.

One is blindingly obvious, the other is Monkey Rodeo.  I'm amazed how close it is though.

This.

Tia Rosa Megathin or get out

So it's 7 months out and we've only got one slot left to fill?

And here I had totally skipped the toy store news feed

I can't wait for the Domino's esque commercials about, we weren't making a good product.

Saying we were on the bubble might understate

We were longest of longshot on the edge of the bubble. Luckily, many of the other teams expected to win struggled on infield defense or pitching while Michigan played it's best all season.

Big win today. Hopefully they get sent to Houston so I can see them.

There's actually quite a few minor league clubs in the area

Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State all have minor league teams in town.  Penn State actually shares a field with them.

There's also already wood bat leagues in the midwest for college players during the summer.  The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League isn't the Cape Cod League, but it offers a place to play for many of Michigan's college teams already.  It would be interesting, and probably a financial payday for the wood bat league to play B1G teams.

Baseball is both fluke and not

RPI has changed drastically to emphasize road wins.  It's helped the northern teams quite a bit.  As an example, the Missouri Valley conference is one of the strongest conferences in RPI this year by playing tough teams in the non-conference on the road.  The top 25 in RPI includes Dallas Baptist (who I've seen adn know are good), Missouri State, Radford, and Bradley.  What the hell is a Radford or a Bradley?

Add that Nebraska and Maryland were two very solid adds in the last few years.  The B1G has had several big wins over big name programs this year.

  • Illinois has wins over Coastal Carolina, and series wins over Oklahoma State and South Florida.
  • Ohio State has a signature victory over ACC leader Louisville in the midweek.
  • Indiana took 2/3 from Stanford, split 2 with College of Charleston, swept Cal State Fullerton, and beat Louisville in the midweek.
  • Nebraska split with Fullerton as well and swept Florida Gulf Coast.

All of those are pretty damn impressive wins.

The big kicker though is how down the Big12 is.  They are looking at only having 2 tourney teams this year.  Texas is way down leaving just TCU and Oklahoma State in the running.  Tech has an outside shot, but its borderline.  Part of that is losing Texas A&M and Mizzou (granted they added TCU after that loss).  Baylor is down, Oklahoma is down.  They just aren't up there at the moment.

There's some structural disadvantages yes, but the amount of money put into programs like Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, or anyone else in the B1G the last few years, the B1G is definitely showing some major improvements.  We've been a 2-3 bid league for a while, we're taking advantage of a down Big12 to grab another, and our recent success in facilities/adding good teams has lead to some better recruiting.

For more in depth coverage, I suggest d1baseball.com.  They've amassed every major college baseball writer I have read over the last 15 years into one site.  Aaron Fitt (formerly of Baseball America), Eric Sorenson (ESPN/CBS), Kendall Rogers (Yahoo!), Mark Ethridge (SEBaseball), and Michael Baumann (Grantland) are just a few .  "O.M.G., it's amazing" is probably the best way to describe it.  They do regular features of different areas of the country along with national storylines.

For B1G fans, I'd suggest starting right here:

If you really wanted to stretch, you could blame the huge drop in home runs on some of the recent success, but they've adjusted the seams on the ball to make up for the deadening of the bats and we've still had success as home runs have come back up.  I don't think any the structural changes with the pitch clock have really offered any help to northern teams specific, so there isn't much to draw from there either.

So yeah... BASEBALL

In-and-Out > Burger TX  >> Five Guys

Burger TX only drops because all of the Blue Bell has been recalled.

Have to agree

I'm guessing Brian sees it as so unlikely to happen, that today is just hyperbole, not actual threat. Then again, I could see Brian creating a giant twitter attack on a guy with one bad idea as an over-reaction.

Damn, beaten to the punch.

I just wonder how Brian didn't link him to Brandon already.  There's a conspiracy here, sheeple.

You know what,

I'd forward this kid's resume to Dave Brandon.

Crimson Quarry is an SBNation blog for Indiana.

Always willing to plug other B1G blogosphere groups. CQ has been around quite a while and has a pretty solid community given the state of Indiana atheletics.

Not a fan of the GIF charts

It's hard to compare two different years on two different charts when I can't see them at the same time. Any chance we can get stacked bar charts?

Seriously

What would a Hoosiers blog know about recruiting anyway?  /fires-off-tweet

+1

Love the softball coverage. Would rec again.

As a neutral observer

This game seemed totally in line with officiating. I thought it was a great pick up for pass interference.  Holding is what it is.  After watching JJ Watt not get a single holding penalty flag in his favor all season, there isn't anything else I would expect in the playoffs.  NFL doesn't want flags thrown on every play in big games.

If I was a Lions fan, I'm pissed about not going for it on 4th and 1.

Kid hit a growth spurt.

You seem overly optimistic about the Jay Gruden for punt coverage coach. I like your style.

I'm still not going to go

I'm still not going to go back and reverse any of my downvotes for people claiming the suspension was part of the "****ification" of the NFL among other things.

I haven't quite locked down a title based on the famous golden toilet yet... but there's something there, I know it.
