|8 weeks 1 day ago||Improvements||
Reduce the pitches per at bat to strike out or walk. 3 balls is a walk, 2 strikes is an out.
Remove the DH. It's the Mudville, not the Mudville 9 and a guy who isn't good enough to play defense. More outs will quicken the game.
Get radar based strike and ball calls rather than a human. It'll be faster and more likely more accurate.
Increase the bases to 100 feet. More outs will happen to speed up the game. Increases the value of line drives and home runs compared to ground balls.
Require a base runner on third base to attempt to steal at least once per at bat.
Allow the hidden ball trick.
Triple play on defense buys you an extra out in the next half inning while batting.
If a pinch hitting mascot hits a home run, the game is over and that team wins.

|1 year 20 weeks ago||There's actually quite a few minor league clubs in the area||
Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State all have minor league teams in town. Penn State actually shares a field with them.
There's also already wood bat leagues in the midwest for college players during the summer. The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League isn't the Cape Cod League, but it offers a place to play for many of Michigan's college teams already. It would be interesting, and probably a financial payday for the wood bat league to play B1G teams.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Baseball is both fluke and not||
RPI has changed drastically to emphasize road wins. It's helped the northern teams quite a bit. As an example, the Missouri Valley conference is one of the strongest conferences in RPI this year by playing tough teams in the non-conference on the road. The top 25 in RPI includes Dallas Baptist (who I've seen adn know are good), Missouri State, Radford, and Bradley. What the hell is a Radford or a Bradley?
Add that Nebraska and Maryland were two very solid adds in the last few years. The B1G has had several big wins over big name programs this year.
All of those are pretty damn impressive wins.
The big kicker though is how down the Big12 is. They are looking at only having 2 tourney teams this year. Texas is way down leaving just TCU and Oklahoma State in the running. Tech has an outside shot, but its borderline. Part of that is losing Texas A&M and Mizzou (granted they added TCU after that loss). Baylor is down, Oklahoma is down. They just aren't up there at the moment.
There's some structural disadvantages yes, but the amount of money put into programs like Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, or anyone else in the B1G the last few years, the B1G is definitely showing some major improvements. We've been a 2-3 bid league for a while, we're taking advantage of a down Big12 to grab another, and our recent success in facilities/adding good teams has lead to some better recruiting.
For more in depth coverage, I suggest d1baseball.com. They've amassed every major college baseball writer I have read over the last 15 years into one site. Aaron Fitt (formerly of Baseball America), Eric Sorenson (ESPN/CBS), Kendall Rogers (Yahoo!), Mark Ethridge (SEBaseball), and Michael Baumann (Grantland) are just a few . "O.M.G., it's amazing" is probably the best way to describe it. They do regular features of different areas of the country along with national storylines.
For B1G fans, I'd suggest starting right here:
For a little older:
Season update from about a month ago:
Early season/preseason about how B1G has spent big on baseball
If you really wanted to stretch, you could blame the huge drop in home runs on some of the recent success, but they've adjusted the seams on the ball to make up for the deadening of the bats and we've still had success as home runs have come back up. I don't think any the structural changes with the pitch clock have really offered any help to northern teams specific, so there isn't much to draw from there either.
So yeah... BASEBALL

This game seemed totally in line with officiating. I thought it was a great pick up for pass interference. Holding is what it is. So far Tim's made 314 snaps on D this year (50% of the total snaps the team has taken), including 33 snaps this week (38% of the team snaps). He's done pretty well spelling Watt and filling in for Clowney (in a tag team with Crick). Unfortunately, when Clowney returns, I think we'll see Jamison's snap counts fall to just a handful per game. He's behind Crick in the pecking order (Crick currently gets twice as many snaps per game). Tough break for Tim who's been a great team player as a back up.
Jamison's also taken a decent number of special teams snaps. Those might increase as he takes less snaps on offense, but still won't be many.

Both of those are high quality. Shin Guardian guys are great. Zonal Marking will be a bit more global, and they'll look at top matches from around the world during the regular season.

There's about to be a slight lull in the soccer world. MLS is the only "major" league playing right now. Most European teams are starting training this week. The transfer market is about to get a bit busier after the World Cup. I will always suggest checking out SB Nation's soccer blogs as well. If you have a local MLS team, most are covered really well.

We haven't seen him tested there... maybe ever? Sure his speed doesn't keep up with the Jones, but the guy has been damn quality when he has played.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Allow me to clarify||
There's no way I'd see him as a CDM. I meant as a LM to replace Bedoya late in games.
Because yes, Davis as CDM would be retarded.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||I'm not happy with the Jones experiment yet.||
It's easy to look good at CDM when the other team is parking the bus. Not enough solid data yet.
I think a lot of people give Brad Davis too little credit. He doesn't have the fast speed, but his positioning generally can make up for it. I don't think he's a great left winger for the international level, but he offers outstanding service and he works hard when on the field. I think we continue to see Bedoya on the left, then depending the style of game, either Johansson or Davis come in as a super sub. Johansson in flowing games, Davis as a set piece specialist in a slower game.
My biggest concern is playing out of the 4-4-2 with diamond midfield. This gets played narrow to clog the midfield with most teams playing 5 midfielders. From what I saw last night, they didn't play very narrow (partially due to the parked bus), and that hasn't really been our game during the Klinsmann era. So are we spacing out our formation to allow our own width to push forward while also exposing ourselves to the top quality wingers we'll be facing in Portugal and German? That seems dangerous enough.

Because I agree they should go to the NCAA model as well. If we were a stronger league top to bottom, maybe an 8 team tourney would make sense as a middle table team could conceivable compete in a regional if they were to win (like a 4-6th place SEC team). A 4-6 seed in the B1G would likely be murdered.

I hate this format. They have two 4 team brackets playing double elimination, EXCEPT, instead of facing the loser from your bracket possibly again, you get the loser from the other bracket, then a one off winner take all. If you lose in the first round, it's 6 games in 5 days to win it all. That's ludicrous for a college team.
|2 years 33 weeks ago||Nationally, there area few||
Nationally, there area few big softball programs in the north, notably Michigan and Northwestern. Baseball is not so much. No team north of Tennessee and East of the Pacific Northwest tends to stay good long any more. Occasionally Louisville or Kentucky have a couple good seasons in a row, but in baseball, those are considered northern teams as well.
I can't explain it in great detail, but I would bet it has to do with quality of pitching. Because the way a baseball is thrown, cold weather is more detrimental. The same thing applies with softball starting pitchers throwing nearly every game where baseball is once a week. The best pitching stays in the south. You want to play where the best competition is to be drafted, so better hitters stay there. That and it's just warmer during the season down there. You also don't have to worry about hectic travel schedules during the school year, so academically, it could be beneficial to play at a place like LSU that only leaves the state of Louisiana when the SEC makes them play road games..
This is probably way over simplified though.

They dropped their team in 1991. I want to say it was Title IX related, or at least they claim Title IX (along with baseball being one of the most expensive sports per athelete) has kept them from starting the team back up.
Wisconsin wasn't particularly good historically. They did well in the 40s-50s and a brief blip in the 70s. Minnesota on the other had has historically been a strong program in the B1G. Wisconsin-Milwaukee does have a team in the Horizon League, although they have been threatened with closing the program as well in the last decade.

Its one of the few Texas metros they havent. They've played in Huntsville & Lubbock recently. I'd consider San Marcos to be the Austin/San Antonio loop. It wouldn't surprise me if they tried to schedule UT-Arlington sometime soon. They're a solid program over the last 10 years.
That said, with the number of California players on the roster, I think Texas may be phasing off the schedule soon. It's been a few seasons since we had multiple Texas players on the roster, and historically, we've scheduled where we have more players so they can play in front of family.

Your M baseball preview: they probably won't be very good. I haven't seen a game in 3 years, so I'm basing this very loosely on last year's performance. That said, I think they make it to Omaha this year. Omaha being the B1G tourney. Not the CWS.
I saw that WLA was back, so I had to see what the bourgeois agenda is with the occult masks.

Return to Texas and real job limits my ability to keep up with non-revenue sports. I only caught one set of volleyball on BTN this season. Stupid board posts (think what I posted, but from someone who is serious) also don't help. I read the front page, but avoid the board for the most part.

|4 years 5 weeks ago||I'm a numbers guy||
5. Outs (not really necessary with rolling game clock)
No huddling. Plays are called by numbers. Each digit represents a WR going right to left.
"13-31" yelled "THIRTEEN-THIRTY ONE" = Outside WR deep, inside slants. All OL are dump off passes/flats. This would work if a team is stupid enough to run zone as it uses the curl(WR)/flats(OL) play with an extra set of deep routes. I also suggest "13-32" for this situation if your QB has a decent arm.
"14-31" = Outside WR deep, inside left slants, inside right crosses, All OL are dump offs. This would be better against man as you have your deep routes clearing out any help and gives a cross toward a right handed QB's natural roll out side.
I also like the "11-11" as a screen play to the OL. Clears out all the coverage and leaves you with the less athletic pass rushers to defend close up.
For defense, if the QB can't run unless rushed, don't rush. Play blanket man with one safety. QB won't be able to run and you theoretically could have everyone covered. Free safety shadows the QB, but doesn't have to be the deepest guy on the field. They should probably stay middle of the field as you probably won't face a QB with an arm that keeps you from providing help deep.

Stricklin is a pipe dream. He could have coached at OSU when their job became vacant. It was even rumored that he took the job for a day or two. He's better off at KSU. Alumnus, family, he's won 1st in his division several years, the program (obviously) is in better shape at the moment.
But it's fine. He's the reason OSU can't sustain a lot of momentum right now. Ohio isn't a bad baseball state as far as recruiting goes. Kent State has won quite a few recruiting battles with OSU the last few years.
|4 years 18 weeks ago||You might be missing some backstory||
Check this. If a college baseball coach has a hate site, you know you should avoid it.
Or you know, the racism charges against him:
RIP Coach Maloney's career. He might not have had the on the field results, but the man was a great off the field influence. His work with charities in the Detroit/Ann Arbor/Chelsea areas is top notch. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who will say that Coach Maloney was anything short of a class act.
God speed, Coach. You'll always be one of my favorite personalities I met through this site.
|4 years 48 weeks ago||It was a tough series against||
It was a tough series against the Tigers. My time at UM made the Tigers my adopted AL team... at least until the Astros move over in November. Rangers never have been my team, but with finishing school in Rangers country, they are my other adopted team. I made it to a ALCS game last season, it was awesome.
The ALCS this year was tough. It was both my side teams facing off, but I think the more complete team won. Looks like Texas may finish it off tonight, yet again as the more complete team. It's been exciting at least.
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Losses had zero to do with||
Losses had zero to do with it. Coaching change wasn't a big thing either. If I was going to quit, it was during the first coaching change.
I got to working 2 jobs while finishing up school (still in progress). Modding took way too much of my time for about 3 years. I made it through the season last year and forced myself to step away. I routinely committed around 30-40 hours of moderation time to the site per week. That couldn't last for the compensation. You people are all idiots, except you who aren't idiots. You know who you are!
As far as life, it's still busy. Still working 2 jobs (resident assistant and now promoted to a supervisor for the Houston Texans gameday staff). Replaced the long distance girlfriend (Texas to Massachusetts) to a local one who has no idea of my dark, internet past. Having the significant other closer to home means visiting the board is once every few weeks at most.
I appreciate all of your concerns. Death to Purdue.

Thought Donovan and Dempsey both looked sloppy this game. Donovan looked sloppy in every game of the tournament though. Passing wasn't crisp, too many crosses missed compared to normal. Perhaps he's still not over whatever he was sick with before the cup started?
Dempsey also didn't have his usual swagger this game. He didn't crack a smirk until he missed that last one. Just wasn't his night. Perhaps he's getting a bit of tired legs? Hopefully he can take it easy the next few days and get some juice back.
Really felt better with Bocanegra in the center and Lichaj on the left. It really solidified the center and offered some speed and aggression on the left. While I'd still like to see someone play better than Goodson, having Bocanegra in the middle made Goodson noticably better.

And Twins-Brewers matchups wouldn't if the Brewers were worth much their last few seasons in the AL? Houston won't be close to anyone other than Texas in the AL.
In terms of distance, after Texas, the closest teams to Houston are St. Louis, Kansas City, Atlanta, Cincinnati, White Sox, Cubs, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, Miami. So out of the nearest 10 teams, only 4 teams are in the AL.
|5 years 15 weeks ago||Vastly against Houston to the||
Vastly against Houston to the AL. There's no more a rivalry across Houston and Texas as there is between Florida and Tampa Bay. There's never been a time in both franchises' history where they successful at the same time. Teams don't have any rivalry. Houston would also stand long time rivalries with St. Louis and Chicago. While Houston is the 3rd wheel in that group, they are still entrenched with those teams.
If anything, it should be Milwaukee, who had natural rivalries in the AL up until they switched over.

Historically weak. Think the WCC in college basketball. The occasional cinderella in the tournament, but no one who is a major player. Gonzaga/Saint Mary's would translate to a rotating cast of Michigan/Ohio State/Minnesota. The Big Ten gets into the tournament, occasionally gets a couple teams, gives a scare to the big boys, but ultimately bows out before the last weekend. Michigan and Minnesota have both made the Super Regional round (equivalent of the Sweet 16) in the last 5 years. Michigan had to beat #1 Vandy at Vandy twice that post-season.
|5 years 22 weeks ago||This is like 2010 all over||
This is like 2010 all over again. We had all 10 teams within 2 games around this same time. It helps that a few teams *cough* MICHIGAN *cough* finally put something together during the conference season. Sinnery was a non-factor in the non-conference, he's had 2 great starts in a row to keep M in the race.
I will admit the Big Ten isn't good this year. Last year was the year no one sucked but there was no dominant team. This year, there's still no dominant team, but there is definitely some suck based on the nonconference *cough* Michigan *cough*.

No Nebraska until next school year.
As for the bats, wood isn't cheap either, and they break faster, at least against good pitching at the high school level and beyond. Most schools don't buy bats for the team anyway. They let the kids provide instead. If they do buy them, it's normally one or two that must stick around for a few years.
As an aside, Chris Webb of Buckeye State Baseball/The Buckeye Nine will have another preview up in a few days. He interviewed Maloney yesterday. This is probably the only the second time I've logged on to the site since the new year, and I'm not planning on being available much this year. The 10 minutes I've put into this response will probably put me back at least 2 hours in workload.
So with that, a thank you to FormerWolv and preemptively Chris for their previews. Anything else this season will be icing on the cake.
