It's not so uncommon to spend scholarships on long snappers

LSU and OSU both took scholarship long snappers last year. And the OSU guy committed in January, well before the Tressel stuff came out and when OSU was still a recruiting juggernaut (I'm personally not convinced by Urban's recruiting - but everyone agrees that Fickell's recruiting was sub par. The snapper committed when Tressel was still king - right after he beat an SEC team in a bowl game). And here are some other, lesser teams who also took scholarship snappers last year - Notre Dame, Michigan State (we know who that guy was) and West Virginia. So that's at least 5 pretty decent programs, total, and 3 that count as recruiting juggernauts (Notre Dame is in that group). And that was just last year. I found those five after two minutes of searching, so there are probably more.

And, two years ago, USC - the real one - took a scholarship long snapper from Chapparal (the same high school also had a long snapper, the year before, earn a scholarship to Arizona - it's definitely a trend).

That's 3 top-10 teams (and 4 top-10 recruiting teams, counting ND) in two years who took scholarship long snappers. And I'm sure there are more I didn't find.
