I think that people might be reading a little too much into this. Rodriguez is an emotional guy. I remember him getting choked up at WVU after they dropped that game to Pitt, and we all saw him tear up during all of the practice nonsense before the '09 season started. He's either an emotional guy or he knows when it's a good time to drop a tear or two. I'm not sure that his choking up at the banquet was such an extraordinary event.
I agree with this, too. Where I think it might "benefit Rodriguez" (though really it could just make life awkward for Brandon) would be if Michigan pounds a good team in the bowl game. I don't know the bowl scenarios very well, but if we walk out with a big win against Oklahoma State or Nebraska, it'll feel strange to dump Rodriguez in the game's wake.
This is a big deal for the Rose Bowl, which would be relieved of that requirement to pick a non-AQ school if Boise or TCU made it to the MNC game. Something like a Wisconsin vs. Stanford Rose Bowl now looks more likely.
