Right, so it's even more…

Right, so it's even more imperative to invest in resources and retain your talent...unless the idea is to shrug and give up. Only a few years ago we felt that football was the SEC + OSU as the only options because it's warmer and where recruits want to be.

Also of note, since three of…

Also of note, since three of the players were one year transfers, the mock draft also includes Erick All and Joe Milton (and Eyabi Okie)

I would agree with you if…

I would agree with you if that were the financial situation we're in, where we have to choose one over the other. But it isn't. Further, it is the job of the AD to engage donors (of which we have many) so that we don't have to choose. Along this same line, it is a lot easier (and cheaper) to retain top talent than it is to recruit top talent

What if...and stay with me…

What if...and stay with me here...UM had enough money to do both?

Isn't it the ADs job to…

Isn't it the ADs job to ensure our facilities and coaches pay are as strong as possible?

Spending other people's money is what donors are for. Just like how Wake Forest got donors to build their pitching lab for their baseball team before the team was as good as UM was under Bakich's watch.

If you're telling me that UM's athletics budget truly doesn't have room for this, I don't know what to tell you. We're not directional tech. I have colleagues at ACC state schools' athletic programs whose comment about funding can be summed up as "the only problem we have is avoiding papercuts when we're opening all the envelopes with checks from donors in them"

Which means you need to do…

Which means you need to do more to retain your coaching talent, not less...

So, you still try harder to…

So, you still try harder to retain top talent. Wake Forest, for which baseball was not a big deal at all, invested money in facilities and staff and is now consistently top-5. And that's Wake, which has a very small alumni/donor base. The idea that just because baseball is 4th-6th fiddle at UM that it shouldn't be well resourced is asinine.

Uh, get your facts right on…

Uh, get your facts right on Bakich winning the Big 10 (Won 2022 BIG Tournament), especially if you're going to ignore he took us to the CWS finals (first BIG team since 2013 to make the CWS).

If one of the big arguments supporting Warde is that he does well with the non-revenue sports, then losing Bakich--who was making UM a destination for baseball players--is a clear counterexample.

This is a good hire, at face…

This is a good hire, at face value, and I'm happy to see it. But lets not start jerking each other off yet. It's not like he beat Kentucky, Kansas, or Duke for a Coach. He beat Louisville. I'm more impressed by Sherrone pulling Alford from OSU.

Chicanerous. And deplorable…

Chicanerous. And deplorable.

Full agree. Jury is still out for Manuel for me overall, but looks like he did a good job hiring May.

It's not admissions…

^^^This

It's not admissions--UM (like Stanford and Northwestern and Notre Dame) will admit students who barely pass the NCAA Clearinghouse. We won't admit as high a percentage as UGA, Bama, Texas Tech, etc., but we'll do it.

As Rice mentions, it's the Colleges or departments that have decision-making on what other universities' credits will transfer to UM as. If they won't allow a roughly equivalent 200/300 level course at another university to count for that 200/300 level course at UM, then the student gets gen ed credit and has to take that same-ish class again if they want that major. Others more UM-knowledgeable can explain how this works for gen ed/core requirements.

So, if you're a transfer who likes UM 10% more, but would have to lose a year+ of credits, you may well choose Illinois or Miami or whomever so that you can stay on timeline to graduate. Or learn new stuff. Or not get frustrated by repeating stuff you know because of an arcane system.

I'm the opposite on viewing…

I'm the opposite on viewing Barry's "quitting". Football is such a brutal game that anyone who decides they're not putting their body on the line for a team/management that isn't trying to win after putting their body on the line for years for that team...respect. It wasn't like a Mecole Hardman at the Jets situation.

This is the humor I needed…

This is the humor I needed in my day. Thank you!

I get it. People are used to…

I get it. People are used to seeing QBs, especially since Mayfield, Tagaviola (misspelled), and Burrow sling it 40x times a game and carry teams on their backs.

JJs sample size is smaller. But he did carry the team on his back at times.

2022 against OSU he carried us offensively in Quarters 1-3 before Edwards' runs through the heart of Ohio. But what people remember are those runs. Not the perfect pass to CJ when OSU was in Cover 0. JJ went into Columbus without Blake Corum and with DE with a broken hand, and OSU's game plan was make JJ beat them. He did.

The statgazers aren't considering his wow plays either. OSU 2023--that pass to Roman Wilson blanketed by Denzel Burke was absurd. Or his pass to Daylen Baldwin across the field in his first gametime in 2021. The one-hand catch of the Edwards throwback before immediately unloading a perfect pass while getting drilled. Just absurd plays. Or all his 15-20 yard runs when plays break down.

And on the flipside--how many bad plays has he made?

In 28 games as a starter and a season as a change-up: the picks against Ball State. The two pick sixes against TCU. The almost pick against Bama. Fumble at MSU. I'm sure there's a few more, but that is a really low number for someone who's played OSU 3 times, Bama, Georgia, TCU, PSU twice, MSU 3x.

Yep, similar to Corum…

Yep, similar to Corum scoring right after Zinter went down. Nothing to get in the way for the team.

Underappreciated, for me at least, is Mike's truck stick of Treveyon Henderson. Continued to establish that nothing would be easy against our D.

Also had a huge 4th and goal…

Also had a huge 4th and goal stop on Nebraska's first drive that game taking on a blocker and escorting poor Adrian Martinez out of bounds

I hear ya, but the cat is out of the bag already (and was before this post). Setting a clear tone for how we at mgoblog are (and should) handle this has a purpose that isn't self-congratulatory. For people even somewhat close to MH who frequent this board to see one community providing uniformly positive support may have a positive impact. Takes so little...

Amazing writing and…

Amazing writing and storytelling. Proper honor for your mom and for this team. So much I’ll remember from this diary, but most of all the “human equivalent of a golden retriever”. Right up there with running with nothing in their pockets, for me.

Context is interesting on…

Context is interesting on this. That trajectory from 34th to 5th looks nice with DTR as QB. But then I remember this is in the Pac-12 with not as much D and that DTR was a pretty good college QB.

I hope he's washed up. Still think he's an upgrade from BOB in the sense that he and Day have worked together before

Well played Well played
I guess I get your point,…

I guess I get your point, but there are ppl on this blog who were on one side on fire Harbaugh who are on the other side with fire Warde. So it's not a single person potentially being wrong multiple times, it's the majority potentially being wrong multiple times. Not really sure it fits the boy crying wolf narrative, either, because we're not making things up like some twitter journalist. We're outlining preferences based on incomplete data.

I don't think we're wrong on Warde, but I guess time will tell.

Just because the regents are…

Just because the regents are happy with Warde doesn't mean we have to be happy with him. There are tons of examples where boards are happy with a CEO who just keeps a steady hand on the tiller while the company slowly bleeds talent and gets behind on R&D.

Boards often want risk mitigation. Warde provides that, in the near term at least. The Regents may be fine with UM football going 9-3 going forward. Their goals and the goals of the fans on this board may well be at odds.

If you believe that Warde had more to do with UM football success than Harbaugh, I don't know what to tell you...

You're not wrong, but I…

You're not wrong, but I think your point makes the main point. Warde is part of the tangoing that didn't go well. Although we don't know all the details, the ones we do have point to him not doing all that was reasonably possible to keep Jim. Ono being repeatedly involved signals a problematic relationship.

As a comment below shares: who wouldn't want to work for a boss that doesn't defend you to the NCAA, especially over small stuff?

It can be a both/and.

Was it clear that Warde was doing all in his power to ensure Hutch's succession plan had the proper resources?

Could he have done something to make Beilien stay an additional year?

What did he do to retain Bakich?

Harbaugh may have been leaving anyway, but the fact that Ono had to get publicly involved hints strongly at the disconnect between Warde and Harbaugh which makes it easier for Harbaugh to go.

It's not just public perception on UM fan's part that is important for Warde to be winning--it's the perception of other coaches. Put it this way--if you were an up and coming coach, would you want to get hired by Warde and believe he would do all to support you and your team to be successful? From everything we're seeing, I can't imagine that's a yes.

Sports being successful…

Sports being successful under him doesn't mean that he played a large role or that they couldn't have been stronger. UM athletics were generally successful with Dave Brandon at the helm...

If Ono was the president of…

If Ono was the president of Wake Forest, sure. But he's the president at Michigan. Fair or not, UM football is the most visible part of UM, followed by other sports if you're outside of Ann Arbor. UM football has had articles in the NYT and Wapo more frequently than anything else about UM, even if you cut out the Stallions shinanigans. It's super visible.

I was (and still am) on the hire Sherrone Moore was a good idea train. But with all the coaches getting poached and him being first time, having help from an AD willing to spend money is critical. Why is someone coming to work for Sherrone Moore right now? It's a risk. So pay money for the risk. We have the money. And if Moore doesn't succeed, you've at least shown other future head coaches you'll support them.

Uhh, Sam Hartman is the ACC…

Uhh, Sam Hartman is the ACC all-time leader in TD passes, and did most of that at Wake Forest. He may not have adapted great to the ND offense, but usually you adapt your offense to your players...

Waiting is the hardest part

Well then he'll be in even…

Well then he'll be in even deeper shiznit if he did.

I get why it's illegal to bet on your own games even if you only bet on yourself or team to win/go over props such that you are not going against the spirit of competition, but I just don't care much about that betting. I'd rather people not bet at all, but hey, their choice.

On the other hand, if youre betting on yourself and team to do poorly and are incentivized to mess up/hurt your team, then that's a whole 'nother ballgame.

Dabo and Kirby are also, I…

Dabo and Kirby are also, I believe, the only two current college head coaches with a BCS/CFP championship. That's nuts.

Chizik is a DC at UNC

Saban retired. Urban's partying. Jimbo's laughing at Bobby Bonilla. Harbaugh's in the NFL. Orgeron's pounding Monster Energy. That's everyone, right?

That's my vibe, too. Maybe…

That's my vibe, too. Maybe it's copium, but I believe Harbaugh wants to coach until he can't be successful at it anymore. And I believe it's really difficult to be 70 and a successful NFL coach. Its more feasible to be 70 and successful college coach.

I hear your point, but…

I hear your point, but assume we're adjusting/correcting for this being UM and not Stanford. Winning BIG championships will lead to playoff semi-finals/finals/championships. A "losing season" will be a 7-5 season given the BIG is MUCH tougher now than the one Rich Rod faced. And yes, any UM coach with 2 7-5 seasons in a row will likely get canned, so no chance of 4 in a row.

Full agree, but it doesn't…

Full agree, but it doesn't hurt. And sometimes it just takes a little momentum on a less important point to get people to reconsider negotiating on the more important points...

You can say that again!

You can say that again!

Then Warde should've done…

Then Warde should've done these things and taken the "no thanks" from Jim with grace. It sucks to be in his position and have to eat crow from Jim, but you do all you reasonably can to keep him here.

Others have argued whether immunity is reasonable or not. It feels like if Ono were just Harbaugh's boss, he'd trust Ono without a contract rider. With Warde, it feels like he doesn't. All feelingsball with no data, but that's where I land.

Agree from a Jay is awesome…

Agree from a Jay is awesome and sneaky good standpoint. Also agree from a career standpoint going out on his own makes sense.

However, from a life standpoint, what's the point unless you're that competitive? He gets to be around his Dad every day. He gets to have cousins/family support for his wife and his kids. Gets to be around his grandparents. Gets to make big $ without the stress of being the CEO. Lots to enjoy right now. Head coaching will be there if he's good enough, one way or the other.

Love what you wrote (and have written each game). Others responses, Don’s especially, covers it well.

The video. Brilliant. Love love love how there were color shots of the high points of years past, too, to capture the full journey since 07/08 and what those teams did to “keep the light” so to speak. Loved Blake bringing us home. Loved the hurdling sequence, of course

Tier 2

Roman Wilson, The Don, the DL, Barrett, Loveland

Disagree. a $50M buyout…

Disagree. a $50M buyout gives Warde massive power over Harbaugh. Can hamstring him if he wants to. Harbaugh could then go public, but that's a mess and would hurt UM.

Low buyout keeps Warde from having power over him...

I have no problem paying Harbaugh to not coach and fight for athlete pay for multiple years if he gets multi-year show cause for whatever BS the NCAA tries to throw at him. The last three years have earned so much $$$. If A&M can weather $70M for Jimbo and Bama can pay a $12M buyout without thinking, we good.

Yeah, I just don't care. He can interview every offseason and during the bye week if he keeps the team humming.

And how exactly did this hurt us in the portal last year?

I hadn't thought about the knock-on effects. As good as our team is, we've summited Everest. What motivates those who stay/are too young for the NFL to run it back? Well, knowing OSU is keeping all their players would be a good start.

What's the difference with this and our One More Year fund, other than we pulled guys back from rounds 2-7 and they're pulling guys back from rounds 1-7?
